Why Pleasure is the Ultimate Self-Care for Black Women
This episode of the Self Care Oasis Podcast is pure fire! I got deep with Dr. Nikki Coleman — psychologist, sexologist, and a Black woman who is absolutely redefining what it means for us to live fully, joyfully, and unapologetically. If you’ve ever felt stuck in burnout, starving for more pleasure, or tired of the old narratives weighing you down, this is the conversation you need in your life. What Went Down: Highlights from Our Real Talk* Pleasure Isn’t Just for After the Work’s DoneDr. Nikki Coleman dropped this gem: pleasure is a pathway to liberation. We get into why waiting to “earn” pleasure is a trap, especially for Black women, and how flipping the script is radical (08:44).* Who Told You Who You Are?We unravel all that negative programming and talk about making a new choice—actually, remembering who you were before everybody tried to tell you otherwise (05:05).* Slow Down, Sis…Seriously, did you know most of us are disconnected from our own bodies? We talk about how to gently come back to yourself and why tuning in is where real self care starts (11:01).* Escapism vs. Embodied PleasureLet’s be real: zoning out is not the same as lighting yourself up from the inside. We go there! (14:16)* What Does REAL Joy Feel Like?Performing happiness for the ’gram or buying brunches isn’t the same as being deeply nourished. We unpack how to tell the difference and why it matters (17:35).* From Womb Healing to Erotic LiberationWe get vulnerable about generational trauma, the power of reconnecting with our wombs, and how pleasure—at every level—is for us, right now (34:34; 25:13).* Liberation Is an Inside JobYou have permission. Seriously. Nobody is going to hand you a gold star for living small. Dr. Nikki Coleman and I want you to walk away from this episode knowing your pleasure is yours to claim (37:18).Self Care Oasis is the gateway to your softer life glow-up via Self Devotion, wellness travel, and early semi-retirement. The Regulated Founder Week 4: Navigating Chaos with Grounded Strategies for Founders to Stay Balanced and Empowered
How do you keep your calm and lead with clarity when chaos threatens to throw your whole world off balance? Founders today are not just building businesses—they’re facing an onslaught of industry instability, mounting internal pressure, and a relentless need to perform under stress. The panic in your body can feel like a physical force, leaving you scrambling for control, hypervigilant, or ashamed of your own reactions.Top Moments & Episode Highlights* Chaos as the Default—But Not Your Destiny:Olivia Denton Thomas and I take you through what it looks like to embrace the fact that chaos is always lurking, but panic doesn’t have to run the show. We dig into why preparation—emotionally, mentally, physically—is the flex for founders who want to move from fear to fierce agility (02:23).* Preparation over Panic:I share what I learned in my NASA disaster recovery days—because your nervous system deserves a contingency plan, not just your business. Let’s talk crisis response, backup plans, and the power of knowing yourself and your triggers (05:55).* Let’s Reframe the Shame:We get candid about that urge to control, shame around the moments you freeze or panic, and why you must treat every “I didn’t know better” as an opportunity, not a character flaw. It’s not an identity, it’s just information (12:14).* The Power of the Pause:Holding your ground, even when your internal alarms are blaring, is a skill. I walk you through how to take a sacred pause, stand ten toes down in stillness, and give yourself the gift of an actual choice—instead of letting pressure make decisions for you (19:13).* Identity, Community, and Celebrating Your Progress:We talk about building an environment (internal and external) that supports your most grounded, capable self. And yes, we high-five ourselves for every tiny win—because celebration builds resilience like nothing else (26:38).* Soul Print, Not Just Fingerprint:I bring it home with “know your crisis management blueprint”—your soul print. Who are you, really, when the heat is on? How do you want to show up next time? Know your vibration, protect your peace, and don’t absorb anyone else’s panic (35:06).Segments from This Episode* From Hustle to Wholeness: How to drop the hypervigilant founder act and lead regulated from within.* Disaster Recovery—But Make It Nervous System Chic: Lessons from NASA and how to apply redundancy, contingency, and backup strategies to your daily rituals.* Celebration as Self-Regulation: Making joy, acknowledgment, and self-esteem your everyday fuel.* Visibility, Vulnerability & Reframing Imperfection: Why repair builds more trust than perfection ever could—and how to let the world see the “messy middle.”Connect with Us!Love what you heard? Stop Giving Your Power Away: Be the CEO of Your Health
You can spend 35 years as a healthcare executive and still feel completely lost when you finally become the patient.Dana Sherwin joined the Self Care Oasis podcast to share her powerful journey from being a high-level healthcare consultant to navigating a life-threatening blood cancer diagnosis. Her story is a wake-up call for anyone who puts their career and family responsibilities ahead of their own physical well-being.In a world where we often give away our power in the medical space, Dana highlights why we must reclaim our sovereignty and act as the lead coordinator of our own care.Self Care Oasis is the gateway to your softer life glow-up via Self Devotion, wellness travel, and early semi-retirement. Join 2400+ Self Devotion Divas who are proactively creating the life they love by becoming a free or paid subscriber. Plus get FREE access to the Oasis Vault containing resources and tools to support your journey from burnout to better boundaries and shameless bliss! Here are the essential takeaways from her experience:📍 Don’t ignore the small signs. Dana pushed symptoms aside for years because she was busy being productive. Those minor pains were actually early warnings of a serious blood disorder.📍 A primary care physician is a non-negotiable baseline. Relying solely on specialists or yearly OBGYN visits can leave dangerous gaps in your health monitoring. You need someone looking at the big picture of your blood work and history.📍 Become the CEO of your own health. The healthcare system, insurance companies, and employers do not teach us how to navigate care. You have to take agency and lead the process yourself.📍 Master the 15-minute window. Doctors are often stretched thin with very little time per patient. Learning how to communicate effectively and advocate for your needs is a vital skill for survival.Self-care is more than just a luxury; it is about having the autonomy and power to navigate the healthcare system with confidence. When you prioritize self-devotion, you gain the tools to stay equipped even in a crisis. How are you taking charge of your health journey this week? Self Care Oasis is the gateway to your softer life glow-up via Self Devotion lifestyle, wellness travel, and early semi-retirement. Join 2400+ Self Devotion Divas in training who are creating the life they love by becoming a free or paid subscriber.Week 2 of The Regulated FounderThe professional mask was never really protection. It was a prison. In this episode, me and brand counselor Olivia Denton Thomas go deep on what it actually costs women founders to perform professionalism at the expense of their own humanity and what becomes possible when you finally stop negotiating with the armor. We name the invisible dynamics underneath founder burnout: the nervous system running on fawn mode, the self-trust that got buried under everyone else’s mission and values, the perfectionism that quietly became the bottleneck. This is not a conversation about hustle. It’s a conversation about what it looks like to build something from your actual self.In this episode, we explore:* Why your perfectionism might be the bottleneck — and what it takes to admit that* The “professional liar” mask and how it forms when we don’t trust ourselves to show up* Why women receive contradictory messages (too much and not enough simultaneously) and how that fuels imposter syndrome* The biology of trust: why self-trust is the soil that holds everything else* What fawning actually looks like in business — and how it’s quietly draining your 24 hours* The difference between persistence and consistency when building authority* How to train your nervous system to feel safe in visibility and vulnerability* Morning prep and evening decompression as daily trust-building rituals* Embracing your “villain era” — what healthy boundaries actually look like from the outside* The Courage to be Disliked and why walking in your own job frees everyone* How to shift from being the superstar to being the visionary* Documentation, SOPs, and operationalizing trust so you’re no longer the bottleneck at 3am* Attribution and celebration as trust infrastructure for your team* Being heart-first and AI-augmented — why your humanity is your differentiator in an AI-saturated worldQuotable Moments:“Self-trust is the ground that you begin to till and build and add the nutrients to so that it’s fertile for the thing you’re building.”“Be the villain in their story while you’re the hero in your own.”“Armoring yourself through softness, self-acceptance, and joy — that’s the armor of authenticity.”“It’s not the business protecting you. You are protecting the business from your ego.”“Heart first and AI augmented — that’s how you become someone people can trust.”Resources & Connections:* 📬 Self Care Oasis Newsletter — Substack: Samantha Gregory* 💼 LinkedIn: Samantha Gregory* 📺 YouTube: Samantha Gregory* 🎵 TikTok: @MsSamanthaGregory* 🌐 Olivia Denton Thomas — The Brand Counselor | Substack: Get daily calibrations for founders going from hustling to wholeness* Olivia’s Website: Wintentional.com* LinkedIn: Olivia Denton ThomasSelf Care Oasis is for women who are done surviving and ready to build from the inside out. The Regulated Founder: Self-Care & Brand Strategy for Growing Founders
Welcome to the Self Care Oasis Podcast, where we strip away the “shoulds,” get real about what boundaries actually feel like in your body, and remind leaders that rest is not something you earn. I’m Samantha Gregory, self-devotion radical and your standing permission slip to stop performing your life and start living it.For the next four weeks I’m co-hosting The Regulated Founder with Olivia Denton Thomas, brand counselor and quiet disruptor of hustle culture and half-truths. If you’ve ever tried to be a full human being inside a rigid, rule-heavy industry, this one’s going to feel familiar. The Series Breakdown:* Part 1: The Perfection Penalty (Thursday, April 2 | 2PM EST) The cost of corporate masking and what sits on the other side.* Part 2: Trust Without the Armor (Thursday, April 9 | 2PM EST) Building a high-trust, credible brand without hiding your humanity.* Part 3: Softening the Systems (Thursday, April 16 | 2PM EST) Designing operations built around ease instead of endurance.* Part 4: The Anchor in the Chaos (Thursday, April 23 | 2PM EST) Staying strategically grounded and regulated during global uncertainty. What We Get Into This EpisodeWe talk about what happens when the script you were handed stops fitting. Olivia and I go into the masks we learned to wear in law firms, boardrooms, hospitals, churches. And we’re honest that shedding them isn’t a breakthrough moment. It’s slow. It’s layered. You don’t blow yourself up to get free. You peel, gradually, at a pace your nervous system can actually hold. (13:49)We talk about boundaries as regulation, not rules. Not something HR hands you in a PDF. Something you build from the inside out, because your time, your body, and your mental bandwidth answer to you first. (06:09)We go deep on perfectionism and what’s actually underneath it. The overcontrolling, the over-giving, the need for validation that shows up dressed like high standards. That stuff has roots. And if you want a different business or a different bottom line, you have to get honest about what’s running the show under all that competence. (22:21)We talk about what real community feels like versus performance community. The kind that tells you the truth without trying to sand your edges down. The kind that holds you accountable to your own growth without asking you to shrink. (37:16)And we close on ritual as a return. Not a checklist. Not a morning routine for optimization. Just the small, consistent ways you come back to yourself when the day has taken you somewhere far from home. (54:40)Self Care Oasis is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Segment Breakdown* Borrowed Identity: What “professionalism” cost you and what it’s still costing you* The Regulated Founder’s Pressure Cooker: How to work within structure without being flattened by it* Self-Trust as Foundation: Why your leadership starts with believing yourself first* Everyday Rituals: What it actually looks like to tend to yourself on a regular TuesdayConnect with OliviaOlivia is rewriting how brand and integrity actually work together. Unlearning the Hustle
In this episode, I sit down with the phenomenal Vanity Jenkins. She’s a single mom, business owner, founder, and unapologetic advocate for self-care. Together, we unravel what it means to survive (and eventually thrive) through seasons of exhaustion, guilt, and growth. If you’ve ever felt like your whole life is run on fumes, this episode will meet you right where you are.Episode Highlights* Surviving and Naming Burnout:Vanity Jenkins shares her lived experience as an introverted eldest daughter, single parent, and nonprofit executive. She talks about those years of never sleeping, and how the layers of responsibility and cultural expectations left her so deep in burnout she didn’t even realize it until her body finally said “enough!”* The Hidden Toll of the Nonprofit Sector:We discuss the unique guilt that comes from serving communities you identify with—particularly opening a school for Black children during COVID, balancing the desire to make a difference with the brutal realities of underfunding and overwork.* Signs That You’re Over Capacity:Both of us share those moments when burnout revealed itself physically—when “just keep pushing” was no longer sustainable. We talk about the unhealthy coping mechanisms that show up (hello, wine and weed!) and how recognizing these signals helped us start healing.* Boundaries, Joy, & Somatic Practices:Vanity Jenkins reveals how setting boundaries, practicing somatic awareness, and reconnecting with her body has been crucial to restoring her wellbeing. She now teaches these practices to women of color through Shifted Consulting, helping others reclaim joy, rest, and alignment.* Societal Structure & Self-Care:We didn’t shy away from calling out how society isn’t designed for us to thrive—especially as single parents and women of color. The constant expectations and the myth of the nuclear family make self-care vital.Guest Connection InvitationWant to connect with Vanity Jenkins? What Would Happen if You Stopped Putting Everyone Before Yourself?
If you pressed pause on putting everyone before yourself, what would actually happen? This is the question anchoring today’s episode with our special guest, leadership coach and weaver, Patty Dayleg. As women, especially women of color, many of us internalize that our worth is measured by how much we give, do, and sacrifice. But what if that legacy of self-neglect stops with us? What if you decided to give yourself the best plate at the table instead of always handing it off to someone else?Inside This Episode:* Patty shares her deeply personal burnout story and how never-ending giving (in both career and community, especially during crisis) left her depleted. She describes the rock-bottom moment when her own needs burst through in ways she couldn’t ignore.* We unpack the resistance and even the barriers society puts in place when we try to advocate for our own well-being, and how asking for support is often met with hoops to jump rather than open arms.* Together, we ask: What if you chose yourself without apology? We suggest tangible ways to start: taking the best for yourself, giving yourself permission to rest, and seeking joy—every single day.* We break apart the myth that prioritizing your wellbeing means abandoning those you care for. Instead, we show how self-devotion fuels deeper, more abundant giving (without resentment or depletion!). * The power of pause: Re-centering can look like a yoga retreat, a solo walk, or simply a moment of silence. It’s about giving yourself what you need before life forces you to. So your overflow can serve family, work, and community from a place of wholeness. If you stopped putting everyone before yourself, you’d:* Show up more present and powerful.* Experience less resentment, more authentic connection.* Pass on a legacy of self-worth to future generations.* Become a true “weaver” in your world—helping others from the strength of your own healing, rather than surviving on fumes.Connect with Patty: Check out her podcast “What We Made Possible”, find her on Instagram @pattymalaya, on LinkedIn, or on her website malayasolutions.com (and don’t miss her wisdom on intergenerational healing). This episode is an invitation: Stop making yourself and your well-being the last thing on the list. From Self-Care to Self-Devotion: A Journey of Radical Self-Responsibility
I’m Samantha Gregory, your guide and architect of the Self Devotion Sanctuary, a transformational space designed for women who are ready to transition from merely surviving to living deliberately. Here, we cultivate nervous system wealth, establish real boundaries, and design our lives around capability rather than exhaustion. The Path to Self DevotionIn today’s society, the concept of self-care is often seen as a temporary solution, a bandaid for the deeper issues we face. However, I’ve discovered that true transformation requires more than just self-care; it demands self devotion. Self devotion isn’t a chore or an obligation. It is a lifestyle, an innate embodiment of who we are. From Self-Care to Self DevotionMy journey from self-sacrifice to self-care, and ultimately to self devotion, has been profound. Self-care, while necessary, is not enough. It wasn’t until I became wholly dedicated and devoted to myself that I found lasting change. Self devotion became the path that guided me from burnout and survival mode to a life of joy and intention.Daily Practices of Self DevotionEvery day, I practice self devotion through meditation and mindfulness, resetting myself whenever I feel anxious or frazzled. This process might involve simple acts like folding laundry or taking a stroll. These resets allow me to realign with my purpose and prevent me from living a fragmented life.Putting myself first, prioritizing my needs, giving myself grace, and moving away from self-neglect, is essential. Many might find this counterintuitive, but it’s a vital part of nurturing and listening to one’s intuition. By doing so, self-care becomes second nature, and I no longer need to schedule it in. It just happens.Living with Radical ResponsibilityTaking radical responsibility for my life has been a transformative step in my journey to self devotion. It means taking ownership of my thoughts, actions, and the life I am creating. This perspective empowers me to let go of external pressures and to focus on my own needs and boundaries.Breaking Free from External ValidationI learned the hard lessons of self-abandonment and the need to please others by carrying the burden of others’ expectations. However, after a pivotal diagnosis, I realized the necessity of radical self-care. I began to focus inward, listening to my body, and allowing myself the grace to let go of unrealistic obligations.Empowering Yourself through Self DevotionBy adopting a mindset of self devotion, I have begun to see and care for myself as the worthy individual I am. Living with intentional self devotion allows me to fill my own cup, leading to an overflow that empowers me to support others without sacrificing my well-being.Invitation to the Self Devotion SanctuaryI invite you to join me on this journey of shameless self devotion. Within our community on Substack, I share articles, videos, and personal insights to guide you from self-sacrifice to self-care and self devotion. One-on-one mentorship is also available for more personalized guidance.ConclusionThis journey begins and ends with you, empowering you to live your dreams and align your life with your true self. Embrace the fullness of self devotion, and let it transform your life from survival to thriving.Until next time, remember to prioritize yourself. Secret Steps I Took to Recover from Functional Depression and Find Joy
If you’re reading this, you already know the exhaustion. You’ve felt the weight of being everything for everyone while losing yourself in the process. You’re functioning, maybe even thriving on the surface, but inside? You’re running on empty.I’ve been there. Early menopause at 32, functional depression, burnout that crashed my body, mind, and spirit. For years, I’ve been teaching radical self-care as the antidote, but recently, I’ve discovered something even more powerful—self-devotion.This isn’t just another self-care trend. It’s the missing bridge between exhaustion and energy, between overwhelm and overflow. What You’ll Learn in This EpisodeIn this raw and honest conversation, I’m sharing why self-devotion is different from self-care, how it activates your Queen Goddess energy, and why giving yourself permission to be “radically selfish” isn’t selfish at all—it’s survival.Key Takeaways* Self-devotion is an energy shift, not a task list – It’s deciding you matter and declaring your worth through your choices, not adding more “should dos” to your plate* You can’t give from an empty cup – Operating below your baseline means you’re giving from depletion; self-devotion fills you to overflow so you give from fullness* The bridge from self-sacrifice to sustainable self-care is self-devotion – This middle ground helps you move from survival mode to thriving mode without the overwhelm* Permission is everything – Especially for women who’ve been conditioned to serve others 24/7, choosing yourself requires unlearning faulty default settings about your worth* Setting boundaries becomes easier when you prioritize yourself first – Self-devotion makes saying “no more” feel less scary and more empoweringEpisode Timestamps[00:00] – My burnout story: Early menopause and the perfect storm[00:57] – What you really want (spoiler: it’s relief)[01:33] – Functional depression and losing yourself along the way[02:10] – From survival mode to thriving mode[02:59] – What makes self-devotion different from self-care[03:26] – Activating Queen Goddess energy through decision-making[04:13] – Cutting off what doesn’t serve you (even with kids and responsibilities)[05:25] – The vessel metaphor: Fullness vs. depletion[05:55] – The ER on Thanksgiving night: What happens when you don’t practice self-devotion[07:10] – Unlearning religious and cultural conditioning around service[08:01] – Steps and practices to reach self-devotion[09:36] – Your gift to yourself this season[10:44] – Next steps and the Self-Devotion ProtocolWhy This Matters NowIf you’ve been waiting for permission to put your name at the top of your gift list, this is it. Self-devotion isn’t an intrusion on your life—it’s an upgrade. It’s energy reclamation. When you fill your cup first, you give from overflow. And when you’re happy? The Pipeline from Self-Esteem to Self-Care: A Conversation with Dame Clarissa Burt
📥 Get Your Free Guide: Download my 35 Micro Self-Care Practices for Busy Women Guide at SelfCareAlchemist.com/selfcareguide. It’s simple, sustainable practices you can use today.SummaryIn this episode, I had the honor of sitting down with author, actress, and speaker Dame Clarissa Burt to explore a question that’s been on my mind: What is the pipeline between self-esteem, self-care, and self-devotion?This conversation hit close to home for me because I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what would happen if women pulled all the devotion we put into our careers, children, homes, parents, and partners—and poured it into ourselves. Clarissa’s journey from a Philadelphia row home to international modeling runways revealed something profound: even the world’s most beautiful women struggle with the same lack of self-esteem. Her bestselling book, The Self-Esteem Regime, offers practical practices like mirror therapy, boundary-setting, and values clarification that I know will resonate with the Self Care Oasis community.Inside the Episode (Timestamps)0:00 Introduction & Guest Welcome1:21 What If Women Devoted to Themselves?3:29 Clarissa’s Background: From Philly to Europe7:33 Writing The Self-Esteem Regime & “Pinch Me” Moments10:52 Overcoming Low Self-Esteem: Family and Modeling Stories16:47 Mirror Therapy and The Power of Self-Talk21:41 Self-Esteem, Boundaries, and Soul Care24:14 Toxic Relationships & Redefining Friendship25:50 Emotional Intelligence and The Energy Scale29:38 Growth, Forgiveness, and Reparenting Yourself33:11 Navigating Transitions and the “Extra Mile”34:01 Forgiving Yourself and Others38:06 Takeaways, Advice, and Book Recap41:54 Closing and Where to Learn MoreKey Highlights & TakeawaysThe Oxygen Mask Principle: This is something I preach constantly; self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. We absolutely must put our own oxygen masks on first before caring for others, and I loved how Clarissa reinforced that self-care needs to be a non-negotiable calendar item just like every other responsibility in our lives.Mirror Therapy: I’ll be honest, I’ve done mirror work before and it was incredibly hard to start. But when I really got into it, it was life-changing because I could finally see my soul, not just my reflection. Clarissa shared how starting with just one minute a day and building to five minutes can create shifts within 21 days. One of her interns couldn’t even speak the first time she tried—that’s how powerful and challenging this work is.Boundaries as Self-Care: This is so important, and I appreciate how Clarissa explained that boundaries don’t have to be violent or confrontational. You’re constantly teaching people how you want to be treated, and you can set boundaries with kindness and grace. When boundaries feel violent, it’s usually because the other person has shown they have no intention of building an authentic relationship with you.The Value System Blueprint: I ask my clients this all the time: What are your values? Most people haven’t clearly defined them, which is why this work is so essential. Your personal values—like honesty, integrity, gratitude, and honor—serve as your blueprint for how you show up in every area of life. The Extra Mile Journey: Clarissa’s description of the self-development path resonated deeply with me—it’s the longest, coldest, darkest, and scariest mile you’ll walk, and you’ll walk it alone. But the light at the end gets bigger, brighter, and more beautiful with every step.Forgiveness is Power: This is something I’ve learned through my own healing journey. Forgiving yourself and others isn’t weakness—it’s one of the most powerful acts of self-care. This includes forgiving yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know and for believing negative messages about yourself. The Comparison Trap: Never compare yourself to others because you haven’t walked in their shoes. As Clarissa said, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side—it might be AstroTurf, or it’s simply greener where you water it.Discovering Your True Self: Before any personal development work can truly transform you, you need to understand who you are at your core—beyond the labels, projections, and conditioning. I’m a personal development queen myself, but the “Who am I really?” question is where the real magic happens.Explore DeeperReady to transform your self-esteem and reclaim your self-devotion?📚 Get the book: The Self-Esteem Regime by Dame Clarissa Burt is available at Barnes & Noble nationwide, Amazon, Kindle, and Audible. Redefining Success Through Self-Trust and Self-Devotion
📥 Get Your Free Guide: Download my 35 Micro Self-Care Practices for Busy Women Guide at SelfCareAlchemist.com/selfcareguide. It’s simple, sustainable practices you can use today.SummaryIn this deeply personal episode, I sat down with Shuang-Min Chang, an intuitive mentor and coach who helps high-achieving entrepreneurs and executives redefine success through self-trust. Shuang-Min’s story resonated with me so much because her burnout didn’t look like what we typically imagine—no mobility, no energy. Instead, she was hyper-energetic, eating for three to four people every meal, sleeping 12 to 16 hours a day during recovery. What struck me most was her realization: My career is here to serve me—I don’t serve my career. This conversation explores the transition periods we all face, the cultural pressures to overwork, how to recognize burnout when it’s disguised as hyperactivity, and how to create success rooted in love, freedom, joy, and peace.Key Highlights & TakeawaysBurnout Doesn’t Always Look Like We Think: Shuang-Min taught me that burnout can show up as hyper-energy, not just exhaustion. She was out of breath after walking five minutes on a small hill, couldn’t surf or climb anymore, and ate massive amounts without gaining weight because her body was so depleted. The key is recognizing when something feels wrong, even if you’re still “functioning”.The Body Is Conscious: Our bodies have their own consciousness and send us messages. Shuang-Min experienced mysterious, violent illnesses for years that doctors couldn’t diagnose, always conveniently timed after big events so they didn’t disrupt her work. Her body was desperately trying to tell her something, but she didn’t listen until it all crumbled down. The Transition Void Is Precious: Nobody told us about life transitions, and that’s such an important point. If Shuang-Min had known that the void in transition is the most precious thing we can have, she wouldn’t have been so eager to fill it. We need space to let a new identity and definition of success emerge that’s actually aligned with our essence.Career Progress Comes with Boundaries: This resonated deeply—Shuang-Min’s career progressed fastest when she insisted on getting off work on time. People would ask her, “Why do you leave earlier the higher your title gets?” She decided she wanted a life, not just a career, and that her career was there to serve her.Know Your Value Beyond Hours: If your value doesn’t come from how many hours you spend in the office, what is your value? Shuang-Min had to really connect to the value she brought to the company beyond just being physically present the longest. When she hit her goals in nine hours instead of 16, what was the point of those extra seven hours?Interview Your Future Boss: We forget that we’re in a powerful position during job interviews. Shuang-Min interviewed her future colleagues and bosses to make sure they appreciated her and would let her do her thing as long as she hit targets. Everyone told her that kind of boss didn’t exist, but her last two bosses were exactly that, and that’s when her career flew.Acknowledge Dissatisfaction Without Guilt: So many successful women feel guilty admitting they’re not satisfied with the definition of success society handed them. They try to suppress it and get busier, which creates even more dissatisfaction. It’s okay—actually, it’s important—to acknowledge when something feels amiss.Success Is an Ecosystem: Success isn’t just career or parenting—it’s all the relationships we create, how much we enjoy them, and how much money we actually want, not what society says we should want. Some people need a million dollars a year, but some don’t actually want the responsibility that comes with it.Create Success from Inside Out: When we connect with our innate worthiness and love ourselves enough, success becomes a natural description of our life, like happiness, not something external we have to chase. We create because we want to, not because we need validation.Episode Timestamps0:00 Introduction2:00 From Fashion Exec to Intuitive Mentor3:00 Recognizing Burnout While Hyper-Energetic7:00 When Your Body Crumbles: Recovery Story10:00 The Body Sends Messages We Ignore14:00 The Precious Void of Transition18:00 Menopause, Identity & Reinvention21:00 Working 4 Hours a Day, 4 Days a Week23:00 Cultural Expectations & Sacrifice25:00 Career Boundaries That Accelerate Success26:00 My Career Serves Me29:00 Knowing Your Limit & Creating Life32:00 Finding Bosses Who Appreciate You34:00 Interview Your Future Boss37:00 Redefining Success as Ecosystem42:00 Success: Description vs. Definition45:00 Acknowledging Dissatisfaction48:00 Connect with Shuang-Min & ResourcesExplore DeeperReady to redefine success on your own terms?🌟 Connect with Shuang-Min: Visit ShuangMinChang.com or find her on LinkedIn and Instagram @ShuangMin. Why Your Self-Care Isn't Working: The Overflow Method for Busy Professional Women
📥 Get Your Free Guide: Download my 35 Micro Self-Care Practices for Busy Women Guide at SelfCareAlchemist.com/selfcareguide. It’s simple, sustainable practices you can use today. This conversation explores how to follow your inner compass, deconstruct limiting belief systems, and turn the tap on so your cup is constantly overflowing. SummaryIn this soul-stirring episode, I sat down with spiritual teacher and intuitive mentor Ashmita Arora to explore the critical difference between fulfillment and abundance—and why chasing the wrong one leads straight to burnout. This conversation really opened my eyes because we’ve been taught that abundance (the nice car, the big house, the designer goods) equals happiness, but Ashmita helped me see that true fulfillment comes from those flow state moments when time disappears and you’re just completely present. What really resonated with me was her metaphor about being full and someone offering you dessert—you don’t need it, but you could enjoy it. That’s abundance. And if you eat it just to have it when you’re already full, you end up on the treadmill the next week trying to burn it off, stressed about something that never truly satisfied you. About AshmitaAshmita Arora is a Spiritual Teacher and Transformation Guide who helps people move through life’s most pivotal transitions with courage and presence. Whether it’s navigating endings, grief, burnout, or profound spiritual awakenings, she reveals the unseen architecture beneath these experiences creating gateways to growth. Her talks blend deep spiritual insight with practical clarity, provoking audiences to leave inspired and empowered.Timestamps0:00 Introduction1:57 Fulfillment vs. Abundance Explained5:33 Why We’re Conditioned to Chase Abundance7:22 Flow State and Avoiding Burnout11:04 Following Your Inner Compass12:49 Transitioning from Fear-Based Decisions15:46 Piscean vs. Aquarian Era23:30 Deconstructing Limiting Belief Systems27:02 The Overflow Cup Metaphor for Self-Care31:47 How to Practice Fulfillment Today33:25 Permission to Say No and Protect Your Energy36:13 Breaking Free from Cultural Expectations38:36 Ashmita’s Programs OverviewKey Highlights & TakeawaysFulfillment vs. Abundance: True fulfillment is when you’re in flow—time disappears, you’re not thinking about anything else, and you’re doing something that doesn’t drain you because the passion comes from such a divine, expansive place. Abundance is the external stuff we’ve assigned meaning to, and when we chase it thinking it will fulfill us, we blur the lines and end up stressed about losing it. The Inner Compass Practice: Ashmita shared the most powerful tool—when making decisions, ask yourself: Does this make me feel expansive or contracted? Is it coming from fear, guilt, or obligation? If it’s rooted in any of those three, don’t do it. You can’t put black food coloring into something and expect to get white. The Body Is Conscious: Our bodies have their own consciousness and send us messages. Ashmita experienced mysterious, violent illnesses for years that doctors couldn’t diagnose, always conveniently timed after big events so they didn’t disrupt her work. Her body was desperately trying to tell her something, but she didn’t listen until everything crumbled. The Tap Metaphor: This one hit me hard—imagine a tap with water flowing constantly. That’s source; that’s when you’re in flow. If you put a cup under the tap and just hold it there, it overflows constantly so you can give from that overflow. But if you fill your cup, turn the tap off, and keep giving from that one cup without refilling, you will burn out. You cannot give from an empty cup.The Aquarian Era: We’re moving from the Piscean era (all about control, boxes, external validation, building outside ourselves) into the Aquarian era (going internal, self-discovery, understanding who we are at a soul level). Those of us who felt like outsiders or didn’t fit into society’s boxes? Our time has come. Reframe Your Obligations: Most of the burnout happens in our heads. Why do we feel like we have to do everything at 100%? Some days it can be sandwiches for dinner, and that’s fine. Look at your responsibilities from a blessed perspective—these kids you prayed for, this job you wanted so badly—and if you can’t change the outside, you can always change how you perceive it. The Power of No: When you say no to protect your energy, you’re not just helping yourself—you’re giving the other person an opportunity for spiritual growth. If it bothers them that you cancel to take a day for yourself, they need to find out why that bothers them. By following your own path, you’re actually serving their higher self even if they don’t understand it in this realm. Stop Giving from Obligation: When you put effort into something nobody asked you to do and then get upset they don’t appreciate it, that’s on you. You did that for yourself, and it’s not on them to care. This applies to parenting, relationships with aging parents, and partnerships. Deconstructing Belief Systems: The root of all spiritual teaching—whether it’s religion or any practice—always comes back to peace, love, care, and acceptance. If something makes you feel contracted or like you’re doing it out of fear, guilt, or obligation, throw that belief in the garbage. You have the freedom and grace to redefine everything for yourself. Reclaiming Joy and Bliss in a World on Fire
In this episode, I co-hosted with Heather Vickery | Joy Warrior, we explored real-life ways to transform burnout into balance, embrace radical self-care, and use embodied joy as a powerful foundation for uncertain times. Your path to sustainable bliss starts now!Thank you to everyone who tuned into our video! Join me for my next live video in the app.Show NotesThe headlines scream chaos. Political upheaval, economic uncertainty, climate disasters, social division - everywhere you look, it feels like the world is burning down. So Heather Vickery and I decided to go live and have the conversation nobody else is having: How do you reclaim joy and bliss when everything feels like it’s falling apart? Not the toxic positivity “good vibes only” b******t. The real s**t. The deep work of building such unshakeable foundations within yourself that when external chaos hits - and it will hit - you don’t crumble with it.Heather brings her embodied joy work and human design wisdom. I bring my bliss-following path and years of transforming burnout into balance. Together, we dove into the radical act of choosing yourself first when the world wants you in perpetual survival mode. The universe decided to test our theories in real time. Heather showed up minutes after her 15-year-old daughter’s car accident - everyone okay, car probably totaled, insurance nightmare beginning. Instead of spiral mode, she walked in talking about divine intervention and $800 lawsuit settlements. That’s what this work looks like when it’s actually working. Our co-hosted conversation revealed the truth bomb that changes everything: Everything in your cup is FOR YOU. The overflow is what you give to others. Revolutionary to those of us raised to give ourselves away first. We explored why EFT tapping might be your secret weapon, how 10-minute practices beat guru marathon sessions, and why radical self-care isn’t selfish - it’s survival. Because here’s what we discovered: the more grounded you are in your own joy and bliss, the more you can actually show up to fight the fires instead of just burning with them.It affects you, but it doesn’t infect you. This wasn’t just theory - it was two women demonstrating in real time how to stay anchored in yourself when everything feels like it’s crumbling. Two approaches, one shared belief: reclaiming your joy and bliss isn’t optional anymore. It’s revolutionary.Drop a comment if this landed. Winter Solstice Guide to Setting Intentions and Finding Inner Peace
As 2025 approaches, it's the perfect time to give yourself the gift of attention and set new intentions. We've spent the past year dedicating our energy to others, but how often have we turned that care inward? As we enter the winter solstice, a season highly suitable for reflection, consider using this period to focus deeply on yourself. Why Pay Attention to Yourself?Reflecting on my own journey, taking a break from daily obligations and focusing on self-care made a profound difference in my life. I've experienced more joy and peace and let go of past rage and depression. By prioritizing myself, I've been able to pinpoint and address the root causes of my imbalances and discomforts. The Power of Connection with SelfForming a close relationship with yourself is critical. This entails self-discovery, self-love, and acceptance. It's about evaluating what you truly want out of life and establishing a deeper, more meaningful connection with your inner being. When you stop expecting validation from others and start giving it to yourself, your life transforms in unimaginable ways.Steps to Deepening Your Self-ConnectionThis holiday season, I challenge you to take intentional time for yourself. This means more than just a fleeting moment of solitude; it entails thoughtful meditation and introspection. Here are some guiding questions to get you started:* What do I really want?* How do I feel right now?* What excites me?* What will bring me joy?By asking yourself these questions daily, even if just for five minutes, you'll start uncovering deeper layers of your true self.Shedding Negative ProgrammingA significant part of this journey involves deconstructing and deprogramming the negative beliefs and projections others have placed upon you. Remember, you are made of stardust, a unique expression of the universe, imbued with immeasurable value. By reconnecting with this intrinsic worth, you can uncover the magnificent version of yourself that's been buried beneath societal and personal expectations.Tools for Your JourneyTo support your journey, I'm offering a free worksheet (below) and a 30-day journal (which requires an email sign-up). These tools are designed to help you dedicate time each day to explore and enhance your self-connection.Join Me on This PathAs a self-care alchemist, my mission is to help overachieving women transform burnout into balance and bliss.
