Shelf Importance

Shelf Importance is a comedy book club podcast that masterfully blends sensibility with vulgarity. Four friends meet every two weeks to discuss the current book they're reading as a group. We began meeting during the 2020 quarantine as a way to keep ourselves sane. Along the way, one of us found out they had a long-lost brother, so he joined as well so we could figure out if he secretly wanted to murder them. We've been streaming as a vidcast since early 2021. In addition to subscribing to the podcast, make sure to check out our live streams on Twitch and YouTube, where we also showcase other things that are important on our shelves, like video games. 5. 7

"Bewilderment" Part 1: Robins for Algernon

*UPDATE* There were a couple of moments of long silence near the end of the episode where I **ahem** forgot to add in the audio stinger. Those awkward moments of silence have been resolved in the newest upload. We're starting "Bewilderment" by Richard Powers. In this episode, we discuss the first third of the book, in which "Flowers for Algernon" is foreshadowed to be the roadmap for this book. Warning: Cuss words and big words inside.

  6. 6

    2021 Epilogue

We wrap up 2021 with discussions about all of the "bests" and "worsts" from the books we read in 2021.

  7. 5

"The Color of Magic" Part 2: Hung Like a Turtle

We're finishing Discworld Book One: "The Color of Magic" by Terry Pratchett. In this episode, we discuss the second half of the book, which leads to a "Science Time with Rich" segment about turtle dingles (featuring a special science guest). It's all still very vulgar and childish.

  8. 4

"The Color of Magic" Part 1: Don't Say Eight

We're starting Discworld Book One: "The Color of Magic" by Terry Pratchett. In this episode, we discuss the first half of the book, try not to say the number that is equal to 7+1, and slightly improve our audio performance and editing. Sensibility is pretty well a thing of the past.

  9. 3

"House of Leaves" Part 3: We're Finally Finished

We're finally finished reading "House of Leaves" by Mark Z Danielewski, but we're still talking about it. In this episode, we discuss the last section of the book, give our ratings, read 1-star reviews, and present our casting for if this were to be a film (a first for the podcast). Sensibility is mostly out the window.

  10. 2

"House of Leaves" Part 2: Why Are We Still Reading This?

We're still reading "House of Leaves" by Mark Z Danielewski. In this episode, we eventually talk about the book, but on the way there, we have SCIENCE TIME WITH RICH, a special baking segment, discuss the birds and the bees, and so much more unrelated, unscripted nonsense. The vulgarity is still there, but we're really reaching for the "sensibility" part.

  11. 1

"House of Leaves" Part 1: WTF Are We Reading?

We're reading "House of Leaves" by Mark Z Danielewski. In this episode, things get weird, things get oppressively boring, Rich learns how to do laundry, and so much more nonsense! Regardless, we have a lot of fun and add a few hundred dollars to the swear jar.
