If you’ve ever started a song and didn’t finish it… or felt stuck somewhere in the middle of the songwriting process, unsure what to do next — this episode will give you a clearer path forward. Songwriting isn’t just about inspiration — it’s about understanding the phases of writing a song. When you understand these phases, it becomes much easier to move from a simple idea… to a finished piece of music. In this episode, we walk through three key phases of songwriting: • gathering and developing song ideas • the messy middle — and why so many songs get stuck there • refining your ideas into a finished song You’ll also hear a behind-the-scenes look at how I move through my own songwriting practice — from scattered ideas to focused work — in a way that allows for both structure and flexibility. 101 | How to Warm Up Your Voice (Without Overthinking It)
If warming up your voice has ever felt confusing, rigid, or overly technical… you’re not alone. In this episode, we simplify the process. Instead of focusing on the “perfect” vocal warm-up routine, you’ll learn how to approach warming up your voice in a way that’s intuitive, flexible, and actually supportive of your singing. We’ll walk through a simple 4-part framework to help you: • gently awaken your voice and body • find ease, resonance, and connection • build flexibility and range without forcing • and bring your voice into real music—not just exercises We also talk about how overthinking and perfectionism can create tension in your voice—and how to shift into a more natural, responsive way of working with your instrument. 99 | How to Find Your Songwriting Voice
How do you actually find your songwriting voice? Is it something you discover… or something that develops over time? Many songwriters feel stuck here — overthinking their ideas, comparing themselves to others, and wondering if what they’re creating is original or “good enough.” But your voice isn’t something you find by thinking. It’s something that emerges through the act of writing. In this episode, we explore what it really means to find your songwriting voice and why the process is less about figuring it out — and more about staying in the work long enough for something true to come through. We talk about: • Why overthinking can keep you disconnected from your creative voice • How your life experiences and perspective shape your songwriting • The role of practice, experimentation, and finishing songs • Letting go of perfectionism and writing imperfect songs Because you don’t find your voice before you begin. You find it by writing. If you’re ready to move from second-guessing your songs to developing a voice that actually feels like you, this episode will meet you where you are. <3 Lainey 🎤 Want personalized support? 98 | Permission to Sing Imperfectly: Letting Go of Perfection in Your Voice
Many singers hold themselves back because they’re trying to sound perfect. They control their tone, their breath, their phrasing — carefully managing every detail so nothing falls apart. But sometimes that control is exactly what keeps the voice from expressing something real. In this episode, we explore the balance between vocal technique and emotional honesty, and why perfectionism can quietly block the freedom and authenticity that make music powerful. We talk about: • Why singers often try to control their voice instead of expressing the emotion of the song • How perfectionism can keep you from fully connecting to the music • The courage it takes to surrender control and “go there” emotionally • Giving yourself permission to sing imperfectly but truthfully Because the most powerful performances aren’t always technically perfect — they’re emotionally honest. <3 Lainey 🎤 Want personalized support? 97 | When Can You Call Yourself a Singer Songwriter?
At what point are you “allowed” to call yourself a singer-songwriter? Is it after you finish your first song? Release music publicly? Perform for other people? Many artists carry a quiet belief that they’re not a real singer-songwriter yet — that they need to be better, more confident, or further along before claiming that identity. In this episode, we explore the journey of becoming an artist and the internal shift that happens when you start taking your creative voice seriously. We talk about: • Why so many artists hesitate to call themselves singer-songwriters • The invisible rules that keep people waiting for permission • How identity grows alongside practice, not after perfection • The role of curiosity, exploration, and consistency in the creative journey If you’ve been writing songs, exploring your voice, and wondering when you’re “allowed” to claim the title of singer-songwriter, this episode is for you. Becoming an artist isn’t a single moment — it’s a practice. <3 Lainey 🎤 Want personalized support? 96 | Not Finishing Your Songs? 3 Reasons Singer-Songwriters Get Stuck
You start songs all the time. But finishing them? That’s where things fall apart. If your voice memos are full of half-written lyrics and abandoned ideas, you’re not lazy — and you’re not untalented. In this episode, we explore three common reasons singer-songwriters struggle to finish their songs: perfectionism, lack of creative systems, and hitting a skill edge. Because sometimes the problem isn’t motivation. It’s protection. It’s disorganization. It’s growth. If you’re ready to move from scattered ideas to steady creative momentum, this conversation will meet you exactly where you are. <3 Lainey 🎤 Want personalized support? In this episode, we explore why singers and songwriters disconnect from their creativity, voice, or songwriting practice — and why this distance is often a form of self-protection, not failure. Do song lyrics come first — or does the melody lead the way? The truth is, songs don’t begin in just one way. In this episode, I walk you through five common “doorways” into songwriting — simple, human starting points that can help you move past the frozen feeling of “Where do I start?” We explore how songs can begin through lyrics, melody, rhythm, harmony, or listening to what’s already stirring beneath the surface — and how finding your doorway can make songwriting feel more natural and less intimidating. 90 | Listening for a Song: A Different Kind of Ear Training for Singer Songwriters
Songwriting isn’t about coming up with ideas — it’s about learning how to listen. In this episode, I’m sharing a different kind of ear training for singer-songwriters: one that helps you recognize song beginnings as they’re already forming — where listening becomes the skill that guides everything else. We’ll talk about the subtle ways songs often arrive: a line that won’t leave you alone, a sound or melody fragment, a feeling that hasn’t found words yet — and why learning to listen for these beginnings can change the entire songwriting process. Rather than forcing a song into shape, this episode explores how to notice what’s already present and stay with it long enough for the song to reveal itself. This is ear training for the creative process — grounded, embodied, and accessible, even if you feel stuck or unsure where to begin. If songwriting has ever felt intimidating, overwhelming, or overly technical, this conversation offers a simpler starting place: attention, curiosity, and trust. Listening is where the song begins. <3 Lainey Next Steps: Book a Coaching Session: reawakenyourvoice.com/coaching Join the Newsletter: reawakenyourvoice.com/insider Visit the Website: reawakenyourvoice.com Write Me: [email protected]

89 | Vocal Play: A Gentle Doorway Into Songwriting
What if you didn’t have to think your way into songwriting — but could play your way in? In this episode, I explore how vocal play can become a gentle doorway into songwriting, whether your songs begin with words, melody, or something in between. Instead of focusing on performance or “getting it right,” we look at how letting the voice explore can lower pressure, reconnect you to emotion, and help songs begin to take shape naturally. You’ll learn: why singing doesn’t have to mean performing how vocal play supports the songwriting process a simple practice for turning journal lines into song ideas how singing, songwriting, and creativity are deeply connected This episode is for singer-songwriters who feel stuck, overthink their songs, or want a more embodied, intuitive way to write music. If you’re longing to reconnect with your voice — and let songwriting feel more alive and possible again — this episode is for you.

88 | Too Many Ideas? The Power of Choosing One Creative Practice for the Year Ahead
If you’re heading into the new year feeling creatively overwhelmed — with too many ideas, unfinished projects, and uncertainty about where to focus — this episode is for you. So many singer-songwriters struggle not because they lack inspiration, but because choosing one direction feels risky. What if you pick the wrong project? What if you lose momentum? What if you don’t follow through? In this episode, we explore a gentler, more sustainable approach to creative focus: choosing one creative practice instead of forcing yourself to commit to a specific outcome or project. Rather than asking, “What should I make this year?” we shift the question to, “What is asking for my devotion?” You’ll hear: Why having too many ideas can create creative paralysis The difference between choosing a project and choosing a practice How focusing on one creative practice builds clarity, consistency, and trust A guided listening exercise to help you tune into what wants your attention right now How devotion to practice can naturally support songwriting, singing, and creative momentum This episode is an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and release the pressure to have everything figured out. You don’t need to chase every idea — you only need to choose the practice that can hold them all. If you’re craving creative clarity without burnout, and focus without force, this conversation will meet you right where you are. <3 Lainey Related Episodes: 85 | A Creative Year-End Ritual for Singer Songwriters: Reflect, Renew, and Reconnect with Your Voice 35 | Renew Your Artistic Vision in the New Year with This 5-Step Creative Exercise for Singers & Vocal Artists Next Steps: Book a Coaching Session: reawakenyourvoice.com/coaching Join the Newsletter: reawakenyourvoice.com/insider Visit the Website: reawakenyourvoice.com Email Me: [email protected]

87 | From Journaling to Song Lyrics: A Simple Way to Start Writing Songs
If you’ve ever filled journals with words but felt stuck turning them into a song—or if you have music you love but freeze when it’s time to add lyrics—this episode is for you. In this episode, I’m sharing a simple way to move from journaling into song lyrics without forcing meaning, overthinking, or trying to get it “right.” We’ll talk about how lyrics actually take shape over time, why journaling is already a powerful part of the songwriting process, and how to begin shaping words into songs in a way that feels natural. You’ll learn: A simple process for shaping raw language into lyrics How to bridge the gap between words and music—whether you start with lyrics or melody How this fits into a gentle, repeatable songwriting practice This episode is especially for singer-songwriters who want a clear place to begin, without pressure to finish a song or have something profound to say right away. 86 | What Counts as Singing? Staying Connected to Your Voice in Quiet Seasons (When You're Not Practicing or Performing)
What does it really mean to stay connected to your singing voice—especially in quiet seasons, when you’re not practicing, performing, or making much sound at all? In this episode, we explore what actually counts as singing for singer-songwriters, and how creativity and voice remain present even when the voice goes quiet. If you’re in a slower season, returning after a break, or feeling unsure how to stay connected to your voice right now, this episode offers reassurance, permission, and a gentle reframe. We talk about the many forms creativity can take, including listening, writing lyrics, exploring meaning through words, creative cross-training, and rest. 82 | Why Reawaken Your Voice is Becoming Singer Songwriter (My Story & What's Coming Next)
Today’s episode is the beginning of a new era for this show. And I’ll share why this podcast is rebranding to Singer Songwriter: to honor the work I’m here to do, and to better support the artists who feel the creative stirring to sing, write, and reclaim their voices again. 59 | Beyond Vocal Technique: Why a Holistic Approach to Singing is the #1 Way to Find Your Voice
Vocal technique isn’t everything. Vocal warm ups and exercises and drills aren’t everything. Sure, I can teach you proper vocal technique. I can show you how to improve your overall tone quality and manage your breath and navigate your full vocal range with resonance and beauty. But I’d be neglecting the other parts of your instrument if I didn’t address what makes you a human being, an artist, a creative, living, breathing soul with so many other moving pieces and parts. You are not your voice. You are so much more. These are the 4 parts of YOU, the WHOLE artist, that are essential to finding your voice as a singer, a songwriter, and a creative human being. <3 Lainey Next Steps: Visit the Website: reawakenyourvoice.com Email: [email protected]
