"You get a URL, you click on it, and—boom—you're in AR/VR!" Fabien Benetou is quite enthusiastic when he talks about WebXR, one of the hottest trends in the immersive environment. Why? The reason is quite simple: with WebXR standards, we have the opportunity to make AR and VR converge to a unified approach, preventing the risks of fragmentation.   This conversation with Fabien immediately took interesting paths: he's a consultant for the European Parliament Innovation Lab, where — in his own words — he has the mission of "measuring bullshit" (02:40). He's also a technical advisor for Unicef Innovation Fund (15:50), a place where dealing with accessibility, or betting on the right projects, is critical. In this new episode of Singularity Watch, we meet Nancy Baker Cahill, one of the most interesting artists in the immersive domain. When Nancy tried AR/VR for the first time, she was already experimenting with immersive art, with a clear goal: make art to raise attention and to mobilize people, without scolding or "teaching" them. Her art is deeply focused on the intersection of art, space, body, and social challenges. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of 4th Wall, a free AR art platform exploring resistance and inclusive creative expression. Her recent AR public art project, Liberty Bell, earned features in the New York Times, Artnet, Smithsonian Magazine, and The Washington Post, among many other publications. The project, on view through 2021, spans nine historic and culturally significant sites in six cities in the Eastern U.S. She is the Art and Creative Technologies Advisor for the XRSI Safety Initiative, and she's currently reflecting on NFTs, smart contracts, and surveillance capitalism. One thing we always say about Virtual and Augmented Reality is that we’re on time to avoid the most horrific scenarios in terms of privacy and safety because mass adoption is not here yet. Luckily, there are many great researchers and scientists that in the last years have started to dig into this matter. In particular, Ibrahim “Abe” Baggili and his team have been the first ones to explore the novel cybersecurity attacks that can be conducted using the specific features of Virtual Reality, and they published a paper in 2019 illustrating how can a person be moved, disoriented, pushed against a wall, or blackmailed while using a common XR device. Abe is the founder of the University of New Haven’s Cyber Forensics Research and Education Group (UNHcFREG), and one of the original members of the XR Safety Initiative. When you think about Singularity, probably the blending of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence is one of its most obvious shapes. Big tech companies collect more and more data about you, about us, and constantly capture our reality. You could think that’s just for advertising, right? This is just one of the multiple uses of your data, and the most interesting or freaky ones are yet to come. Probably, 2021 is going to be a transition year, but in 2022 we can expect much big news. Robert Scoble is the “user number one,” a person who rode the first Tesla and was there when Siri and Uber were invented. Today our journey meets Dr. Joshua Cohen and his world of ideas and solutions for a deeper self-storytelling. He’s a Media Psychologist and a person who’s constantly exploring the boundaries of the human mind and technological transformations, a world leader in special branch of psychology based on the creation of multimedia content with the patients to face many different challenges. He’s the author and co-editor of the book “Video and Filmmaking as Psychotherapy: Research and Practice”. As a Media Psychologist, he has developed the programming for Peer Mental Health: Virtual Reality and Peer Mentorship and overall Wellness and Workforce Development. How can the immersive domain further improve the therapy strategies? Technological advance is often about balance. Balance between change and accessibility, first of all, but also about data. In an era of constant reality capture, we deal with highly refined personal informations, with strong identity and privacy challenges especially in the medical field, and this is something no one can ignore. About Dr. Cohen He’s an author of Video and Filmmaking as Psyschotherapy: Research and Practice and a researcher. He was clinically trained, and he’s both a peer and a professional. In 1996, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and shortly afterward finished his bachelor’s degree in Film and Anthropology and then began his work as a film editor working with Patrick Swayze on Dance in 2001 and Doug Pray on a documentary about the Dalai Lama right around September 11th, 2001. He’s been hospitalized over 10 times and also put on total and permanent disability and dialysis due to kidney failure. His books are distributed in several countries and over 100 libraries worldwide and taught in psychology and film classrooms as well including USC.
