Chapter 20 Essentialism - BE
To be or not to be. That is the question, to quote Mr Shakespeare. This is our last chapter and now that you have read about all the pieces of essentialism, the question is what will you do with them. The author says essentialism can't work best if you do it, you must be an essentialist, at the core. Maybe not completely at first but something you grow into.
-
48
Chapter 19 Essentialism - Focus
Focus on the now. What is important now? Not in the future, not in the past, but now. If you don't know what's most important now, then the most important thing now is figuring out what is the most important thing now.
-
47
Chapter 18 Essentialism - Flow
Get in the groove, Go with the flow. Habit is powerful and if you are working in a routine that is now a habit you don't have to think about it
-
46
Chapter 17 Essentialism - Progress
Baby steps? Makes sense, small steps to start before we run. What is the smallest thing you can accomplish that leads to your goal? Today, do that first.
-
45
Chapter 16 Essentialism - Subtract
Slow down to speed up, subtract to add. It all sounds so confusing, but it's about getting the obstacles out of the way . Get rid of the bottlenecks in your process.
-
44
Chapter 15 Essentialism - Buffer
Give yourself some space. Add a little time to the plan, add a little money, add more people. Don't make it by the skin of your teeth.
-
43
Chapter 14 Essentialism - Limit
What is the edge? The boundary? The Limit? How far can you be pushed away from your objective or purpose? If you don't set your own limits, they will be set by default, or maybe worse, set by somoene else. Take control and set boundaries for your work life, family life, etc...
-
42
Chapter 13 essentialism - Edit
Take away to add. It doesn't make sense at first glance. How can we add by taking away? We do that by creating more space for what is important. We make room. Reduce your options and you make way for easier decisions. Condense. Can I eliminate one step, one sentence, one process? Can I correct one item where we are off track. Take away to add.
-
41
Chapter 12 Essentialism - Uncommit
Like the song in Frozen...Let it go, let it go. Don't let "sunk cost bias" derail you. Learn to uncommit from the trivial many.
-
40
Chapter 11 Essentialism - Dare
How dare you say no? What trade-offs must be made? Saying no takes courage, and you have to practice, but it is the only way to combat the trivial many.
-
39
Chapter 10 Essentialism - Clarity
Are we clear? Crystal, Sir. This quote from A Few Good Men is appropriate today, since our chapter is about clarity. Clarity of your mission, clarity of purpose. What is essential? If we could only be excellent at one thing, what would it be?
-
38
Chapter 9 Essentialism - Select
Select. As in choose, pick one. Or it could be as in superior, elite. To be honest it could be either definition. But the gist of this chapter is how to decide to make a trade off. What is your selection criteria. If it's not a 90, it's a zero.
-
37
Chapter 8 Essentialism - Sleep
Refresh and replenish. Sleep is an important part of being able to separate the essential from the trivial many
-
36
Essentialism Chapter 7 - Play
Play. Every day. At least a little. Play and don't take yourself too seriously. I like to have a good time. So every day you should make time to laugh a little, no matter how serious you are.
-
35
Essentialism Chapter 6 - Look
Look for what's important and extract it from the trivial many that bombard us everyday.
-
34
Essentialism Chapter 5 - Escape
Escape to think, to learn, to discern. We need time set aside to focus on what is essential vs what is trivial
-
33
Essentialism Chapter 4 - Trade Off
We can not do it all. Instead off asking how can I do both ask what do I want to go big on?
-
32
Essentialism Chapter 3 - Discern
Identifying the essential few out of the trivial many is a must for the essentialist. Use discernment to cut through the clutter.
-
31
Essentialism Chapter 2 - Choose
We may not be in control of what options we have but we are free to choose from among them. The power of choice in our lives cannot be taken away. It can be given away but not taken. Choose wisely
