Jean-Jacques Perrey from Paris was one of the first Moog musicians, creating "far out electronic entertainment" already in the 1960s. He released albums with names we love like "Musique Electronique Du Cosmos (Electronic Music From Outer Space)" (1962) or "Cadmus Le Robot De L'Espace" even from 1959. We ran into "Cosmic Bird", this fantastic tune he recorded with Air in 2000 roughly, recently on an old CD, burnt from Audiogalaxy and Soulseek shares in the early 2000s which we didn't listen to for decades. It reminded us somehow of our first edit of "Popcorn" by Magic Men (and the original of course, the first synth chart hit by Hot Butter from 1972). It not only has a futuristic, but also a fun side to it and a psychedelic one too, like our favorite Italo tracks, so we decided to edit it to take the wonderful hypnotic madness of the original to the extreme. :) Enjoy! One of our favorite mixes so far was the one we made in June 2019 for the Lithuanian channel Absurd. They recently decided to take down almost all their mixes so we decided to upload our mix again on our channel. The end is near - at least the end of 2021. It was a strange year again. We would like to make it a bit better and were digging very deeply and crisscross through our vinyl record collection. The result is this trip across space and time with some of our favourite gems from the 80s until now - mixed and recorded live as we love it the most. We start at 100 bpm and rising the frequency with every record until we end at 126 bpm. Der CHIC-Nachtclub befand sich Ende der 1970er bis Ende der 1980er Jahre in Völklingen / Saar. Völklingen war damals eine der reichsten Städte Westdeutschlands, weil hier eines der größten Stahlwerke des Landes beheimatet war. Die Völklinger Hütte wurde 1986 geschlossen und ist heute ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Der Resident DJ hieß Ronald Springer. Ronald arbeitete hauptsächlich als Ingenieur, zuerst bei einem Piratenradi-osender auf einer mysteriösen Insel im Ärmelkanal vor der britischen Küste, dann bei der BBC und später im Studio 54 in New York, wo er auch mit dem DJing begann, bevor er zum leben und arbeite als DJ ins Saarland kam. Er hatte gute Verbindungen zu Plattenläden in Rotterdam - wo er geboren wurde - und in Belgien, und der lokale Plattenladen „Musiktruhe“ hatte aufgrund Hunderter Chic-Besucher, die seine Musik auch zu Hause spielen wollten, auch italienische Import-Schallplatten von „Il Disc“ und anderen Labels verfügbar. Sein musikalischer Hintergrund machte seine Clubmusikauswahl wirklich legendär, ein vielseitiger und qualitätsorientierter DJ-Stil, der am frühen Clubabend eher hitorientiert war, in den späteren Stunden mehr Raum für Club- und Undergroundtracks gab, irgendwo zwischen Italo Disco, HiNRG, Synthpop, New Wave und EBM. Der Club verfügte außerdem über einen der größten Show-Laser zu dieser Zeit in Deutschland. Die Lasershows waren ein außergewöhnliches Erlebnis, begleitet von atmosphärischen Electro-Tracks wie Newcleus - Automan (Dub). Ronald begründete unsere (The Robot Scientists) Liebe zur Underground-Clubmusik. Viel später, um 2008, wurden wir persönliche Freunde von Ronald und spielten einige Nächte zusammen in Cocktailbars, Eisdielen und Clubs in unser Heimatstadt Saarbrücken. Er war auch dabei, als wir Giorgio Moroder in Luxemburg als DJs unterstützten und er freute sich sehr, ihn persönlich kennenzulernen. Leider starb Ronald Springer sehr plötzlich und viel zu früh im Alter von 63 Jahren am 3. März 2018. Diese Live-Aufnahme ist somit eine Hommage an einen herausragenden und regional sehr einflussreichen DJ, der die Jugend und den Musikgeschmack von Tausenden von CHIC-Besuchern geprägt hat. Durch ihn hatten sie eine großartige Zeit und konnten herausragende elektronische Tanzmusik hören.

The CHIC nightclub was located in the late 1970s until the late 1980s in Völklingen/Saar. Back in those days, Völklingen was one of the richest cities in the West Germany because it was home of one of the largest steelworks the country had. The Völklinger Hütte was closed in 1986 and today is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The resident DJ’s name was Ronald Springer. Ronald used to work mostly as engineer first at a pirate radio station on an mysterious island in the English Channel off the British coast, then at the BBC and later on in the Studio 54 in New York where he also started DJing before he came to live and work as DJ in the Saarland. He had great connections to record stores in Rotterdam - where he was born - and in Belgium, and the local record store „Musiktruhe“, due to the hundreds of Chic-goers who wanted to play his music at home as well, also had Italian „Il Disc“ and other import records available. His musical background made his club music selection truly legendary, an eclectic and quality-focused DJ style, hit-oriented in the early hours of the night, more club and underground in the later hours, somewhere between Italo Disco, HiNRG, Synthpop, New Wave and EBM. The club featured one of the biggest show lasers at that time in Germany, the laser shows were exceptional, accompagnied by atmospheric electro tracks like Newcleus – Automan (Dub). Many people say that apart from the Dorian Gray in Frankfurt, the CHIC was the best club in the whole South-West of Germany, a region with more than 20 million inhabitants. Weekends with 2000 guests were not rare in the heyday of the steelworks. People had money and loved to party, Poppers, Wavers, New Romantics, sometimes even Punks showed up and had amazing nights together. Italo Disco acts like Den Harrow or Ago had live performances there, there were fashion shows, model and dance contests. The club also featured an own restaurant and cinema. Ronald established our (The Robot Scientists) love for underground club music. Much later on, around 2008, we became personal friends with Ronald and we played some nights together in cocktail bars, icecream parlors and clubs in their hometown Saarbrücken, he also joined us when we supported Giorgio Moroder in Luxemburg and was really happy to meet him in person. Unfortunately, Ronald Springer died very suddenly and far too early at the age of 63 the 3rd of March 2018. This live recording thus is a tribute to an outstanding and highly influential DJ who shaped the youth and musical taste of thousands of CHIC goers. Through him, they had a great time listening to outstanding electronic music.
