    When Stretching Sabotages

Today’s fan favourite episode is a bit of a hot topic, and I know it’s going to stir up some questions. That’s exactly why we need to talk about it more! We’re diving into the science behind our warm-up routines with horses and why what we’ve always been told about stretching might actually be working against us. This information completely changed how I approach warm-ups with my own horses, and I’m confident it’s going to give you a lot to think about too. Before you ask your bodyworker for stretching homework, you need to consider that recent science shows that pre-workout static stretching can do more harm than good.Stretching does exactly what we think it does! It temporarily loosens muscles and the tendons that go with them. And that may be the last thing we want to do right before asking our horses to work. K-Taping Manual Teaser

Years ago (c. 2013-2014), I fell in love with kinesiology tape for horses.I spent years learning and growing as a practitioner.  I spent countless hours writing this digital manual. As I grew and learned, the manual grew and became even better! And now, it’s available to you.“The Essential Equine Kinesiology Taping Manual” is for anyone who wants to be a hands-on helper for horses. The manual starts with some of my best tips for increasing the efficacy of tapings, covers understanding when to use different protocols, and the anatomy you need to know to use tape well. Even if you haven’t taped before, this manual is easy to follow; you’ll be able to apply tape with the manual’s pages open on your phone at the barn!Horse owner? Professional bodyworker? I’ve included over 70 taping protocols, so there is something for everyone and for a variety of situations. In this week’s fan favourite episode of the podcast, I read some of the beginning of The Essential Equine Kinesiology Taping Manual to you.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:  Grab The Book!Grab Premium Canadian Equine Kinesiology TapeTackling Lumbar Pain In HorsesGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Training For Longevity

Whether you’re a bodywork practitioner or a horse owner, using the tips I chat about in this fan favourite episode will help the horses in your life perform better, and stay sounder longer.I chat about the following:Limiting sport specific training to limit repetitive motion strain/ overstretch injuries, and fascial adhesions that limit range of motion and interrupt muscle efficiency.Varying training intensity. This avoids performance plateaus, and promotes correct tissue adaptation in strength training. The intensity and duration of workouts cannot increase simultaneously. Sometimes increasing to 2 workouts a day is safer than one very long and very hard workout.Intervals are important. Horses are designed to be in a variety of postures a day. Holding one frame for a long time isn’t healthy or natural. The body needs to be trained methodically and in intervals of different frames in order to get to the top level (and stay there).LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:Tackling Lumbar Pain In HorsesGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Conquering Glute Pain

In this episode, we explore one of the most common yet often overlooked patterns in equine performance: gluteus medius dysfunction and its deep connection to recurring lumbar pain. As training intensity increases (whether with young horses building new skills or seasoned ones facing greater demands) this powerful hindquarter muscle can become the weak link, creating a cascade of compensations that affect propulsion, back lift, and overall fluidity. We gently unpack the fascinating interplay of anatomy, fascia, and compensatory patterns involving the psoas, hamstrings, SI region, and rib cage. You’ll come away with fresh eyes for those subtle signs you may already be noticing in your horses, along with hope and practical direction for lasting change. If you’re ready for a true transformation in how your horse moves and feels, this conversation offers clear insights you can begin applying right away.Links Related To This Episode:Tackling Lumbar Pain In Horses Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Girth Pain Syndrome

“Girthiness” is one of the most commonly expressed concerns from horse owners in my 1:1 practice. As soft tissue practitioners faced with a girth-sensitive horse, we address all of the muscles that are related to the saddle area, shoulder and girth. However new literature has proposed that this “girthiness” may actually be coming from the withers.Join me for this fan favourite episode where I discuss ‘girth pain syndrome’ in horses, and the astonishing new thoughts on its cause, prevalence and treatment. The Right Thing At The Wrong Time

In this episode, we explore a gentle but important shift in how we prepare horses for work. Many of us incorporate passive stretching with the best intentions- to loosen up, show care, and support our equine partners. But, emerging insights suggest that timing matters deeply. We break down the key differences between passive (static) stretching and dynamic, movement-based preparation, drawing from solid performance research to understand how each affects a horse’s neuromuscular system, power output, and coordination right before activity. You’ll come away with a clearer picture of why dynamic warm-ups may better prime the nervous system, enhance proprioception, and support explosive, controlled movement, while learning when passive techniques truly shine. This conversation is designed to empower equine bodyworkers and dedicated owners with practical, horse-centered insights you can immediately apply or share with clients.A free resource is available as a support to this episode! Tissue Preparation

What we practice is what we get. Walking horses prepares them for…. (insert drumroll here)…Walking. The true fitness of a horse dictates what happens in a bodywork session and what homework will be left for the horse between sessions. There are many aspects to fitness: general fitness, sport specific skill acquisition, and tissue training. This last type of fitness is what is most commonly overlooked and misunderstood by practitioners. It includes ROM, control of ROM, strength in ROM and lastly, stamina. The specific exercises left for horses by a bodyworker should come from an understanding of tissue training. This is the key to moving forward with a horse’s training! Is Their Thoracic Sling Primed?

Join me for this episode of the Starline Equine Bodywork Podcast where we look at the thoracic sling. This is the horse’s built-in shock absorber and suspension bridge. It is a powerful muscular-fascial hammock made of the serratus ventralis, pectorals, subclavius, trapezius, rhomboids, and longissimus that lifts the thorax between the front legs and carries 60–65 percent of the rider’s weight. When the sling is weak, tight, or restricted, horses often compensate with a high head carriage, hollow back, short forelimb stride, tripping, or forelimb lameness.Tune in to learn simple five-minute range-of-motion and strength tests you can run on level ground, plus owner-safe bodywork techniques that directly free and strengthen the sling. You’ll also pick up daily groundwork homework that builds lasting support, clear ways to tell whether the problem sits in the sling itself, the withers, or the neck-shoulder junction, and a green-light checklist to confirm your horse is truly ready before you add collected work, lateral movements, or jumping. LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!Equine Reaction Ponts Skill Accelerator Course Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. The Back Pain Episode

In this episode, we explore spinal segmentation issues in horses, where the spine’s motion segments (comprising vertebrae, discs, facet joints, and ligaments) lose normal micro-mobility or neurological coordination, often before visible structural damage like arthritis appears. Common types include hypomobility, hypermobility (unstable excessive movement), facet inflammation, and multifidus muscle inhibition leading to longissimus over-recruitment. This dysfunction causes pain through reduced shock absorption, abnormal mechanoreceptor signaling, muscle spasms, atrophy, shortened strides, and a vicious cycle of sympathetic upregulation, with specific spinal areas indicating causes like saddle fit problems or psoas referrals. We also detail several practical tests to spot back discomfort early, used by equine bodyworkers. These non-diagnostic hints help identify the overwhelming majority of functional issues before advanced imaging is needed.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!SHOW SPONSORS: IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Can K-Tape Strengthen Muscles?

In this fan favourite episode, I talk about an article I read warning people to avoid practitioners who claim that taping can strengthen a muscle of a horse. The article had undertones of attempting to discredit other practitioners. That’s just unfair, especially because it used a very narrow definition of what is actually meant by “assisting a muscle” to strengthen it.In today’s episode I talk about why I feel this article is unfair, and dig into the broader science behind what it actually means to assist muscles to strengthen them.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!SHOW SPONSORS: IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. In this hands-on episode, we dive into the horse’s hindquarters—the true “engine” that powers propulsion and performance. Restrictions in the hip flexors (iliopsoas), lumbosacral junction, or sacro-iliac joints often lead to compensatory issues elsewhere, affecting everything from the stifle and hock to the back and neck. Designed specifically for equine bodyworkers, massage therapists, and dedicated horse owners, this episode provides safe, effective tools to identify and address these common problem areas, helping you support your horse’s comfort and long-term soundness.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODEGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!SHOW SPONSORS: IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Accelerated Healing With Tuning Forks

In this episode of the Starline Equine Bodywork Podcast, we dive into the fascinating science and practical application of 128 Hz weighted tuning forks – a gentle yet powerful tool for accelerating tissue repair in horses and humans alike. Often called the “Otto 128,” this low-frequency fork creates coherent mechanical vibrations that travel beautifully through bone and dense connective tissue. Backed by principles of vibroacoustics, mechanotransduction, and piezoelectricity, the 128 Hz frequency triggers nitric oxide release for better circulation and reduced inflammation, upregulates healing genes, stimulates collagen synthesis and osteoblast activity, and even generates tiny bioelectrical currents that mimic the body’s natural repair signals. The result? Faster recovery from injury, decreased pain, relaxed fascia, and a calmer nervous system – all without drugs or invasive procedures.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!Show Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Consent Based Equine Interactions with Dr Marisa Markey

Horses aren’t just animals—they’re individuals with their own thoughts, feelings, and voices (if only we learn how to listen). In this deeply personal episode of the Starline Equine Bodywork Podcast, I open up about a horse who came into my life under less-than-ideal circumstances…and how everything transformed in just four short days.It all shifted because of one sentence.Dr. Marisa Markey of Full Circle Equine Veterinary happened to be at the farm that day. With a single observation, she completely reframed how this horse was being seen and understood—changing his trajectory forever (and honestly, mine too).I sit down with Dr. Markey to relive that pivotal moment, unpack what happened in the days that followed, and explore how her consent-based, horse-centered approach became the foundation of everything I now believe about working with horses. If you’ve ever wondered what it really means to meet a horse as an individual—not an object, not a project, but a feeling, thinking being—this episode will stay with you long after it ends. You don’t want to miss it. This is the kind of conversation that can change how you show up for every horse, every day.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE:Connect with Dr Markey: Full Circle Equine VeterinaryGrab your FREE Stall Rest Enrichment Guide from Full Circle Equine Veterinary Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!SHOW SPONSORS:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. The Difference Between Flexibility and Mobility

This week’s episode is a fan favourite. Words carry more weight than we often realize—they shape meaning and set expectations.Let’s examine two terms that are frequently swapped without a second thought, and uncover why that’s a mistake!Flexibility vs. MobilityTune in as we explore how flexible horses are developed, and the right times to focus on flexibility training. We’ll dive into mobility for horses, how it’s built, how the nervous system turns mobility exercises into fluid movement, and when mobility work is truly beneficial.I don’t want to overhype it… but understanding these distinctions can make a MASSIVE impact on your horse’s well-being, performance, and post-workout recovery.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s backJoin the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!Grab your free lumbar decompression taping PDF “We Have You Back” Show Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Recurring Back Pain In Horses

In this fan favourite episode we look at why is back pain a common recurring issue in horses. This question should be front and center in your mind as a horse owner or bodywork practitioner. So here‘s the reality. If your horse suffers from a period of back pain, it’s common for it to re-occur. Seriously. Frustrating…. Right?!There are a variety of reasons why.Join us for this episode where we discuss 4 reasons for recurring back pain and a simple “back hack” to help your horse. The reasons for recurring back pain include: After a period of back pain horses can experience inactivity of the deep, short back muscles that control the micro-movements and stabilization of the vertebrae. Spinal segmentation issues remain  unresolved. Rehabilitation exercises are not specific to the tissue that was the area of concern or injury. Horses go back to doing the thing that injured them in the first place. Recovery needs to be ongoing and rehabilitation needs to be adapted as the body’s tissues adapt to the exercises. If you can rule out pathology that requires veterinary attention and chiropractic intervention, you likely will be left with a horse that is “stuck” in a pattern of dysfunction. Kinesiology tape can help at the onset of discomfort and dysfunction, before pathology results. Many horses just need that little extra help to resume normal functioning and optimal comfort levels. Tape is a great solution in these cases.Lumbar decompression tapings are SIMPLE to do. The benefits available are fast acting, and (in my experience) long term results are available; horses begin to move comfortably and correctly again. Lumbar discomfort is very common in horses, so this taping is very useful to know!Yup… we’ve made a free resource to teach you how to do this for your horse! Rib Cage and Low Back Pain Connection in Horses

The rib cage is more than just a protective structure for a horse’s vital organs; it’s a dynamic framework that significantly influences movement and comfort. However, stiffness, misalignment, or tension in the rib cage can disrupt this harmony, leading to back pain, even in the lumbar region. This episode explores how biomechanics, nerves, muscles, and fascia intertwine, revealing the rib cage’s critical role in equine health. Issues like poor saddle fit or uneven riding can cause rib cage stiffness, forcing the lower back to compensate, which may result in muscle fatigue, joint stress, or behavioural and performance changes. Practical solutions for ensuring your horse is comfortable through its rib cage is the focus.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back: https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Mobilizing Your Horse’s Front and Hind Limbs

In this episode, we uncover the magic of leg circles, a simple yet powerful exercise to elevate your horse’s mobility, health, and performance. This science-backed technique involves gently rotating a horse’s front or hind limbs to lubricate joints, engage stabilizing muscles, and awaken the nervous system through non-habitual movements inspired by the Feldenkrais Method. By improving range of motion (ROM) and fostering neuroplasticity, leg circles help horses move with greater ease, prevent stiffness, and enhance coordination- perfect for everything from dressage to trail riding. With clear, step-by-step guidance, this episode makes it easy for horse owners to start this practice, focusing on small, mindful movements that lead to big results.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Easy Mobilization and Soft Tissue Release Techniques™️: https://starlinebodywork.com/learn/mobilization-pdfGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back: https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Do We Care About Your Horse’s Hair?

Ever wondered why your horse’s mane flips stubbornly to one side or suddenly switches direction? In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of mane direction, a quirky topic that sparks curiosity among horse owners and equine bodyworkers alike. We start by exploring the science behind why a horse’s mane falls the way it does, tracing it back to embryonic development where hair follicles and whorls are set in motion around 30-60 days of gestation. With a nod to equine behavior research and fun facts about hair whorls potentially hinting at temperament, we unpack how genetics and biomechanics shape this small but intriguing part of your horse’s anatomy. Whether you’re a rider puzzled by a messy mane or a bodyworker looking for clues, this episode offers a fresh perspective on what your horse’s hair might reveal about their body.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back: https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Beyond the Saddle: Unraveling Equine Back Pain and Dysfunction

In this episode of the Starline Equine Bodywork Podcast, I explore a compelling case of a horse with chronic back pain, revealing that the issue wasn’t a poorly fitting saddle but a deeper problem rooted in the horse’s body. Through a real client story, I uncover how intercostal pain (between the ribs) and mid-gluteal dysfunction caused referred pain to the thoracic and lumbar regions, leading to hypersensitivity and stiff movement. Despite the horse’s strong back the dysfunctional movement patterns highlighted the need to look beyond the saddle. The episode dives into the science of referred pain, explaining how shared nerve pathways, such as those in the intercostal and gluteal muscles, can mislead owners into blaming the saddle when the root cause lies elsewhere. The episode emphasizes the importance of addressing spinal and muscular dysfunction to ensure a healthy back, which is critical for proper saddle fit and overall equine comfort.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Grab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back:  https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. How to Decode Referred Pain

Ever noticed your horse acting stiff or reactive in one spot, but the area feels fine when you check it? You might be dealing with referred pain—a sneaky phenomenon where discomfort shows up in one part of the body but stems from a problem elsewhere. In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of referred pain patterns in horses, exploring how to crack the code using Reaction Points and the science behind it all. Referred pain is common in horses due to their complex anatomy and stoic, prey-animal nature, which can mask issues and lead to ineffective treatments or frustrated owners. By the end, you’ll have a clear roadmap to spot referred pain, use Reaction Points like a pro, and get to the root of your horse’s discomfort—plus, we’ll geek out on the science that makes it click!Referred pain is like a game of telephone in your horse’s body: a tight muscle or inflamed joint sends a signal, but the brain misinterprets it as pain somewhere else, like a flinch at the shoulder when the real issue is in the lower back. Horses are prone to this because their interconnected musculature and fascial networks—think of fascia as the body’s shrink-wrap—transmit tension across distant areas, while compensatory movements create secondary pain points. Reaction Points, those hypersensitive spots that “light up” with a flinch or swish of the tail, are your detective tools to map these patterns. We’ll walk you through a step-by-step process to assess them: observe your horse’s movement, apply gentle pressure to key areas like the poll or withers, and connect the dots to uncover links, like a reactive loin pointing to a sacroiliac issue. Backed by science like convergence theory—where nerves from different body parts confuse the brain’s pain map—and research on myofascial connections, this episode empowers you to listen smarter to your horse’s signals. Whether you’re an owner palpating during grooming or a practitioner refining your skills, you’ll leave inspired to solve the puzzle of referred pain and help your horse feel their best.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Join the Starline™️ Method Online Skill Accelerator: Equine Reaction Pointshttps://starline.thinkific.com/courses/reaction-pointsGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back: https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. How to Make Homework Stick

Why do clients skip their equine bodywork homework? Despite having the information, many struggle with application due to mistrust in simple exercises (like carrot stretches), expecting instant results, or busy schedules. This episode dives into why homework matters—it’s tissue training that builds your horse’s athletic foundation for skills required under saddle. To make it stick, reframe exercises as essential, set realistic expectations (commit to 3 weeks!), and integrate them into daily routines like grooming. Overcome barriers with practical strategies: make homework convenient (keep carrots handy for stretches during blanketing), start small with one targeted exercise per horse, and leverage rewards like treats or turnout to keep horses and owners motivated. Small daily habits compound into big results—prevent costly veterinary issues by investing just 2 minutes a day. Pick one horse, one exercise, and start today! Share your progress with your barn or tag us. Great horsemanship is in the details—let’s build stronger, healthier horses together!Join our 21-day DME’s Challenge- Self Study Edition at https://starlinebodywork.com/learn/dme-self-study complete with tracking sheets and accountability!  PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Join the Starline™️ Method Online Skill Accelerator: Equine Reaction Pointshttps://starline.thinkific.com/courses/reaction-pointsGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back: https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork. Understanding Integration Pauses and Processing

In this episode of the Starline Equine Bodywork Podcast, we dive into the essential concepts of integration pauses and processing in bodywork, exploring their significance for horses. These terms describe critical moments during sessions—whether massage, craniosacral therapy, or other forms of equine bodywork—where practitioners pause to allow the client’s body to respond and adapt to the work. We’ll unpack the difference between processing (the body’s immediate reaction to touch, like a horse yawning or a human relaxing) and integration (the longer-term incorporation of these changes into movement or emotional balance). These pauses are vital for supporting the body’s natural healing processes, ensuring the benefits of bodywork are both immediate and lasting. We’ll explore why integration pauses are so important, connecting them to key biological principles. Pauses prevent sensory overload by giving the nervous system time to process sensory input, promoting relaxation through the parasympathetic nervous system (think rest-and-digest). They also support neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to form new neural pathways for improved movement or posture, and homeostasis, helping the body maintain balance after changes like muscle release. For horses, visible signs like licking or chewing signal processing, while pauses allow these responses to evolve into integration, fostering lasting improvements in movement or stress reduction. Tune in to learn how these intentional breaks enhance the emotional and physical connection in bodywork, making them a cornerstone of effective sessions.PLEASE CONSIDER RATING, REVIEWING AND FOLLOWING THIS SHOW.This will help us reach more people and more horses, to support their journey and relationship together.LINKS RELATED TO THIS EPISODE: Join the Starline™️ Method Online Skill Accelerator: Equine Reaction Points: https://starline.thinkific.com/courses/reaction-pointsGrab your FREE assessment guide for your horse’s back:  https://starline.myflodesk.com/backPRIVATE PODCAST LINK: Join the FREE “Stick With It” private podcast series here and learn 3 ways to use kinesiology tape that nobody ever told you about!https://starline.myflodesk.com/podcast?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwL8eCVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1XwG2bHf4yinPSmzhGi2iXkZE3-n9fpshGw9UcO2uHfdeQxsvXZVjnzGOGE_aem_gmApS0NKQ0jya9XxIF9angShow Sponsors:IG: @equigateFB: @equigatehttps://www.equigate.com Connect with us:Instagram - @starlineequinebodywork Pinterest - https://pin.it/7kvSCptWebsite - starlinebodywork.comDISCLAIMER:The ideas expressed in this podcast are opinions only, and are not substitutes for proper veterinary care, veterinary medicine and other forms of bodywork.
