Founded in 2009, the African Leaders Malaria Alliance, ALMA is a groundbreaking coalition of 49 Heads of State and government working across country and regional borders to eliminate malaria by 2030. Malaria is an entirely preventable and treatable disease. Since 2000, malaria mortality rates in Africa have fallen by 66% in all age groups, and by 71% among children under 5. ACR Report
The 2015 ACR Report send a very clear message with official development assistance to Africa diminishing, the continent have to rely more on mobilizing domestic resources if it is to implement its development agenda. The ACR report shows that this is possible, with a good number of African countries providing success stories based on strategies and initiatives that can easily be adapted to other countries. However, the capacity gaps to generate savings and taxes from domestic resources and allocate them to economically and socially productive activities remain glaring. It was the biggest turnout to date for the 11th edition of Discop Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. More than 2,200 participants showcased the exponential growth for Africa’s biggest TV content market, with this year’s 11th edition seeing a more than 50% increase in attendance of key industry players from across the globe. Sanitation and Hygiene Madagascar
Ensuring improved sanitation and hygiene for all remains a major challenge in Madagascar, but innovations from local partners supported by the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) are vigorously helping transform this situation. The national programme supported by GSF in Madagascar is known locally as the “Fond d’Appui pour l’assainissement” (FAA). It is one of the leading programmes in the sector and a driving force in the national movement to end open defecation. The programme was initially present in 14 out of the 22 regions in Madagascar and was expanded in 2014 to the remaining eight regions leading to nation-wide coverage. NEPAD’s Gender Programme
NEPAD’s Gender Programme works to tap into one of Africa’s most untapped assets….. Women. Gender development within the NEPAD Agency is primarily driven by the Gender programme and its flagship project, the NEPAD/Spanish Fund for women empowerment, a fund of 20 million Euro provided through the Spanish Government to support women’s projects in more than 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of the NEPAD/Spanish Fund is to empower African women with financial resources to unlock their economic potential, fight poverty, create wealth and contribute to the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The year 2015 is a very important year for the NEPAD Gender Programme and the NSF because it has been declared by the African Union the official year for “African Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Agenda 2063. Feroza Adam
The 9th August is National Women”s Day in South Africa. It marks the day in 1956 when 20,000 women from across the colour bar descended on the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They marched in opposition to the dreaded apartheid pass laws. It was on that day in 1994 that the young charismatic political activist, Feroza Adam died in a car accident. Feroza Adam was credited with inspiring and uniting women across race and class divisions as a tireless worker for women’s rights. She had strong views about women’s role being changed. Feroza Adam was a woman who stood up against it all…….male dominion, racial and religious prejudice. Healing the soil
In South Africa the month of July is dedicated to the father of the nation, Nelson Mandela. The Mandela Day is held annually on July 18. People around the world are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to do community work in celebration of the “Ubuntu” values and principles that the first democratic president of South Africa epitomized. This year Channel Africa visited the Carl Sithole centre in Soweto, Johannesburg and spent 67 minutes planting seedlings for a veggie garden. This project was made possible with the sponsorship of a fertilizer and distribution company, Fertilis earthworm castings product. Carmen Nottingham, the co-founder of Fertilis came on board to contribute and support this initiative that will make a difference at the Sithole Centre. In this changing global context, Africa has been experiencing significant changes that impact on its future prospects. The continent has made remarkable progress in advancing economic and social development in recent years. There has been a great improvement in governance on the continent, trending towards an increased prevalence of peace and constitutional governance under the auspices of the AUC. The African Congress for Women Entrepreneurs celebrated its 10th anniversary recently under the theme: Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Promotion for women and Youth and support of SMEs and Post 2015 Agenda towards Africa’s 2063 development agenda. Financing Agenda 2063
The world is changing and Africa too is changing. As a consequence, a new reality has emerged in this changing landscape. Among the changes affecting the world is a new phase of globalization. It is characterized by accelerated economic integration and driven by the phenomenal growth of information and communication technology. Africa has been experiencing significant changes that impact on its future prospects. The continent has made remarkable progress in advancing economic and social development in recent years. There has been a great improvement in governance on the continent, trending towards an increased prevalence of peace and constitutional governance under the auspices of the AUC. The institutional landscape of the continent also continues to improve, with the absorption of the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA) into the programmes and structures of the AUC, the adoption by African leaders of Agenda 2063, a 50 year development framework for Africa. Genocide in Rwanda.....a grim anniversary!
Over half a century ago, the world met and decided that the holocaust should never happen again while the world idly watched. Not long ago, the killing fields happened in Cambodia where in a period of four years almost 2 million people died from execution, torture, starvation and diseases. A genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge.Then came Rwanda where more than a million people were killed in the space of 100 days. The year 1994…….the world looked on while Rwanda’s State inspired genocide unfolded on a population. Twenty one years on, for genocide survivors this is a traumatic but extremely important occasion when they may publicly express the grief they still feel. UN-Water Conference/Zaragoza
The 2015 UN-Water Annual international Zaragoza Conference provided a space for dialogue on the implementation of the sustainable development goals on water and sanitation. Mo Ibrahim Prize/SADC Media Awards
The Ibrahim Prize was established in2007 by Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, to celebrate excellence in African leadership and to provide laureates with the opportunity to pursue their commitment to the African continent once they have stepped down from office. To win the Prize, laureates must fulfill the following criteria; be a democratically elected former African Head of State or Government who has left office in the previous three years; have served her/his constitutionally mandated term and have demonstrated excellence in office, helping to lift people out of poverty and paving the way for sustainable and equitable prosperity. President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia fulfilled all those criteria by becoming the 2014 winner. In this edition of “Tam Tam Express” we put the spotlight on democracy and good governance with our guest, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, former Prime Minister of Tanzania, former Secretary general of the OAU and Chair of the Ibrahim Prize Committee. NEPAD Gender programme
NEPAD’s Gender Programme works to tap into one of Africa’s most untapped assets….. Women. Gender development within the NEPAD Agency is primarily driven by the Gender programme and its flagship project, the NEPAD/Spanish Fund for women empowerment, a fund of 20 million Euro provided through the Spanish Government to support women’s projects in more than 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.The goal of the NEPAD/Spanish Fund is to empower African women with financial resources to unlock their economic potential, fight poverty, create wealth and contribute to the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The year 2015 is a very important year for the NEPAD Gender Programme and the NSF because it has been declared by the African Union the official year for “African Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Agenda 2063.
