The Bear Comes Home From The Bar

We are survivors of childhood alcohol adversity. We are resilient. We are no longer silent. These are our stories and how we can recover from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress. ACEs are a public health crisis in the US. A child living with an alcohol-addicted parent can end up with cumulative ACEs and a dysregulated nervous system; as adults, we are at high risk for chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance addiction -- but together we can heal. Inspired by the work of pediatrician and the Surgeon General of California, Nadine Burke Harris.

Terrance provides a brief description of a complicated process that is a normal response to stress stimuli. Then we ask what happens when the stress is too severe, too frequent and occurs during childhood? Answer: toxic stress. Toxic stress refers to persistent adversity that a child experiences — without the buffer of a safe, stable adult or other protective factors — which can result in a dysregulated stress response.
