We’re sure this podcast will challenge a few of your long-standing beliefs, as it did ours when we have read through the studies. 999- is the patient breathing?

Life threatening emergencies are something that we do not wish to experience, however, all have a common link of early intervention being vital to survival. Performing CPR to someone in cardiac arrest can treble their chance of survival and this can be by anyone who is confident to do so. Our aim is to provide more knowledge to increase people’s confidence so that they could save a life. We also discuss anaphylaxis and we have attached the links to how each brand of adrenaline pen works below, so please take the time to review this as it could be life saving. https://www.epipen.co.uk/en-GB/patients https://adults.jext.co.uk/about-jext/how-to-use/ https://www.emerade-bausch.co.uk/patient/ More information on the recovery position & CPR can be found below: https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr/learn-cpr-in-15-minutes https://www.sja.org.uk/get-advice/first-aid-advice/unresponsive-casualty/how-to-do-the-recovery-position/

    Vitamin D-aylight?

Vitamin D, probably the most widely known, has a large impact on our health. Living in the UK, we do not get enough sunlight for at least half of the year, further increasing our risk of deficiency. With more companies offering vitamin supplementation, should we know more about their effects? Do we know safe dosing limits? What monitoring is required? This information has been known to have been omitted from the packaging leading to hospital admissions due to over supplementation leading to endocrine and electrolyte disturbances. Exercise or physical activity?

Going the gym is something we are familiar with (although many might not go) and the concept is to perform exercises for a set period of time; however, this hasn't always been the case. The gym has arguably been formed due to a lack of physical activity in the modern way of life, but we need to move more frequently outside of a gym environment. This podcast discusses what exercise we should be aiming for, the impacts on our risk of frailty, health benefits and whether it's as simple as just to burn some calories... Dyslipidaemia- Is cholesterol good or bad?

Dyslipidaemia (abnormal blood fat composition), is a leading course of cardiovascular conditions and we do not treat this risk like any others. With treatments that have gained a bad press (namely statins), patients are reluctant to address their cholesterol as they cannot feel the ill effects at present. From a health care professional, the guidelines and targets are ever moving, making treating such cohorts a difficult process. In this podcast, we aim to provide an insight into the importance of treatment and how to go about this. With no symptoms present in the majority of cases, why would you treat such a condition and surely it cannot be that bad? Sadly, it is this reason that makes this condition so devastating and we hope to make you more aware of this. Atrial Fibrillation- why does my heart skip skip a beat?

In this week's episode, we discuss a heart condition that is being diagnosed at an alarming rate and the majority of the population will be unaware of this. Atrial fibrillation carries an unwanted stroke risk, which is why more publicity is required, given strokes can be life changing, or even worse, cause of death. As a side note, we mentioned the CRY charity, who provide ECGs for young people (no previous cardiac problems are required to meet the criteria) for no charge due to the rise in cardiac problems at sporting events (https://www.c-r-y.org.uk/screening/). GLP-1- The wonder drug?

In todays episode we discuss GLP1's (glucagon-like-peptide-1 agonists), more commonly referred to 'The Skinny Jab' by the media. Over the last few years they have become a revolutionary treatment option for people living with obesity, who previously wouldn't have had a bridge between over the counter orlistat and the more extreme bariatric surgery. Unfortunately, due to influencers on social media sites documenting their journey of using the medication, branding it as a wonder drug that requires the user to not change anything within their lifestyle to loose significant amounts of weight. Coupled with them being highly accessible via online platforms, they are increasingly being used inappropriately. This has lead to a number of issues for patients and health professionals. We discuss these issues and provide practical information including; their mechanism of action, long term consequences and the potential dangers of GLP-1s when not used correctly, in line with national guidance.

Hypothyroidism- A kick in the metabolism?

In this week's podcast we discuss hypothyroidism (under active thyroid), a condition that affects approximately 3.5 million people in the UK and is often mistakenly blamed as the cause for people's weight gain. The reason being that Lee was diagnosed with this at the age of 10 and has had minimal intervention since, possibly due to the lack of knowledge surrounding genetic forms of diabetes. As mentioned in the podcast, the following link can be accessed to calculate your risk of MODY and as always, if you have any concerns you should seek medical advice as this podcast is for information purposes only. https://www.diabetesgenes.org/exeter-diabetes-app/ModyCalculator Links to the website: www.longev8y.co.uk Instagram: @longev8y Thank you for listening!
