The conversation also explores the emerging threat of Xylazine, a powerful veterinary tranquilizer that is increasingly being mixed with opioids, worsening the opioid crisis in these communities. The episode also highlights the critical role of therapy in addressing mental health issues like depression and anxiety, which are often at the root of substance use. Before we start today, I want you to pause for a moment—and set aside everything you think you know about addiction.”“Today’s story challenges power, privilege, stigma, and the long-held belief that substance use disorder is a moral failure.”“Our guest is Jeff Breedlove—a former Speaker of the House, a man who once stood at the center of political leadership, influence, and public trust.”“Years ago, his life made headlines—not for policy or politics—but for an arrest involving crack cocaine.”“For many, that would have been the end of the story.”“But for Jeff, it was the beginning.”“Today, he is nine years in recovery—and his journey helps us understand something the science has been telling us for decades: substance use disorder is a disease of the brain, not a failure of character.”“Addiction changes neural pathways related to reward, motivation, memory, and impulse control. It’s about treatment, connection, accountability, and access to care.”“In Season 3 of The ClearlyWell Podcast, we are moving past stigma and into science. Season 2, Episode 54, Brittany R. Re-Release Part 2
Such a special episode we thought you should hear it againBrittany’s story doesn’t start the way most people expect an addiction story to begin. It starts when she was 14 years old, sitting across from a provider and receiving her first mental health diagnosis—long before she had the language to understand what that diagnosis meant, or the support to know how to live with it.By the time she was 15, Brittany was living two very different realities. On the outside, she was a cheerleader at a prominent high school—visible, accomplished, and seemingly thriving. On the inside, she was struggling to manage emotions she didn’t yet know how to regulate, pain she didn’t know how to name, and a system that didn’t know how to hold her.Substance use entered her life early—not as a choice, but as a coping mechanism. It became a way to quiet the noise, numb the anxiety, and feel something that resembled control. What followed were early encounters with law enforcement—moments that would begin to define her in the eyes of others, even as she was still trying to understand herself.Over the next decade, Brittany’s life unfolded at the intersection of untreated mental health needs, substance use, and stigma. Each label she was given made it harder to be seen as a whole person. Each consequence came faster than the support ever did. What makes Brittany’s story so important is not just where she struggled—but how early it all began, and how easily those early warning signs were overlooked. Her experience challenges the idea that addiction has a single look, a single background, or a single starting point. This is not a story about failure. It’s a story about survival.About resilience.About what happens when young people are expected to carry adult-sized pain without adult-sized support. And it’s a reminder that recovery doesn’t begin when someone “hits bottom.”Sometimes, it begins when someone is finally heard.

CWP, Short Sesh Episode 49: The dish on Therapy
Welcome back to The ClearlyWell Podcast — where we talk about the real work of healing, the science behind recovery, and the hope that connects it all.Today’s Short Sesh is all about therapy — what it really means, the many forms it can take, and why it’s such a powerful force in behavioral health and addiction recovery. We hear the word “therapy” a lot — CBT, DBT, ACT, group therapy, trauma-focused work — but behind those acronyms and techniques is one simple truth: therapy is about connection. It’s about learning new ways to think, feel, and respond when life gets heavy.Did you know that people who engage in therapy — especially alongside medication-assisted treatment or peer support — are more likely to stay in recovery, reduce relapse, and improve overall well-being? The data keeps showing what many of us already know: talking works. And speaking of the people who make that healing space possible — up next, I’m sitting down with Beth P., LCSW, a therapist who’s been on the front lines of behavioral health for years. She’s joining us to talk about what therapy reallylooks like, how it feels to sit in that room, and how change begins with just one honest conversation.

CWP, Short Sesh, Episode 48: Gas Station Opioids/ The Truth About Kratom
Welcome to The ClearlyWell Podcast — where we explore the intersection of mental health, medicine, and real life. I’m your host, Elizabeth McKeon, PMHNP, CARN, and subject-matter expert in behavioral health and addiction recovery.Today’s episode takes us into the world of a controversial substance quietly sitting on gas-station counters across America — kratom. Marketed as a natural energy booster, pain reliever, or mood enhancer, kratom is anything but harmless. This so-called ‘herbal supplement’ acts on the same brain receptors as opioids, and it’s leading more and more people to emergency rooms in full-blown withdrawal. Some even experience psychosis — hallucinations, paranoia, and delusional thinking — after heavy or prolonged use. There’s no real age restriction, no consistent labeling, and no federal oversight. In other words, the American public is experimenting with an unregulated opioid-like substance disguised as a supplement. In the next fifteen minutes, we’ll unpack what kratom really is, what the national data show, and why this gas-station drug poses a growing risk — especially in rural communities where addiction treatment resources are already scarce.Let’s talk about what’s really happening behind the label — and why ‘natural’ doesn’t always mean safe.”

The ClearlyWell Podcast, Short Sesh, Episode 39: The Legal Drug That Kills(Amy Winehouse)
Welcome back to The ClearlyWell Podcast — I’m your host, Elizabeth McKeon.Today, we’re having a brutally honest conversation about one of the most overlooked — and deadliest — drugs in the world: alcohol. When we think of addiction, we often picture heroin, fentanyl, or meth. But alcohol quietly remains responsible for millions of deaths each year — and yet, society rarely calls it what it is: a drug. It’s impossible to have this conversation without remembering lives lost too soon — including the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, whose remarkable talent was cut short at just 27 years old after years of struggling with alcohol use disorder.Amy’s story isn’t unique — it reflects the quiet devastation alcohol can cause, even in the absence of “harder” drugs. It also highlights how addiction doesn’t discriminate: fame, fortune, or success don’t protect anyone from the biochemical grip of alcohol dependence. But there is hope.Today, we’ll also explore one of the most underutilized — but highly effective — treatments available: Naltrexone. Both in oral and injectable form, Naltrexone has changed countless lives by reducing cravings, breaking the cycle of dependence, and giving people a path toward recovery. So let’s break the silence. Let’s talk facts. And let’s stay ClearlyWell.

ClearlyWell Podcast Short Sesh, Episode 21: Mary
In todays super short sesh, we hash out a touchy subject on Marijuana. The concept of marijuana as a "gateway drug" is debated, with arguments on both sides, so let's dive into the pros and cons of this perspective: Potential Path to Harder Substances: Some research suggests that early marijuana use, particularly in adolescents, may increase the likelihood of experimenting with more harmful drugs later, such as opioids or stimulants. Behavioral Reinforcement: For some individuals, marijuana use might lower inhibitions or normalize drug-seeking behaviors, making it easier to transition to other drugs. Biological Susceptibility: Marijuana can influence brain chemistry, especially in young people, making the brain more susceptible to other drugs. Social Environment: Marijuana use may expose users to social environments where other, harder substances are present, increasing the likelihood of encountering and potentially using them. Correlation, Not Causation: Many experts argue that marijuana doesn’t cause someone to use harder drugs, but that underlying factors like genetics, social environment, and mental health play a larger role in the progression of substance use. Relative Safety Profile: Compared to other drugs, marijuana has a relatively low risk of overdose and physical dependence, which means that for some, it serves as an endpoint rather than a gateway.

ClearlyWell Short Sesh, Episode 20: To MAT or not to MAT
In todays short sesh, I delve into medication assisted treatment. Although some practitioners as well as lay people believe that medication assisted treat for SUD is a substitution for drug use or a band aid, I address in this short sesh both sides. The goal of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is to effectively support individuals who struggle with substance use disorders by providing a comprehensive approach to treatment. This includes the use of FDA-approved medications in combination with counseling.MAT Goals:Reducing or eliminating the use of illicit substances: The primary goal of MAT is to help individuals overcome their dependence on drugs or alcohol. By using medication, MAT can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for individuals to abstain from substance use.Improving overall health and well-being: Substance use disorders can have a significant impact on an individual’s physical and mental health. MAT aims to improve overall health by addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction.Supporting long-term recovery: MAT is not a short term solution, but rather a long-term treatment approach that supports sustainable recovery. By combining medication with therapy, individuals are more likely to maintain their sobriety.Reducing the risk of relapse: Relapse is common among individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. MA, properly paired with Peer Support/or counseling has been shown to reduce the risk of relapse by helping individuals manage their cravings and maintain abstinence.

ClearlyWell Short Sesh, Episode 19: The Wall
A critical topic! In todays short sesh I delve into the fact that mental health and substance use disorder continue to be treated separately. The division between mental health and substance use disorder treatments is a significant issue, especially given how frequently the two conditions intersect. Many healthcare systems still treat these as separate issues, despite the growing evidence that a dual-diagnosis approach—where both mental health and substance use disorders are addressed simultaneously—leads to better outcomes.

Brittany R. Episode 10 Part 2
⸻Brittany’s Story – Original Episode Narrative RewriteBrittany’s story doesn’t start the way most people expect an addiction story to begin.
