The Personal Effect with Julie and Eric

Over the past few weeks we’ve been exploring the many layers behind the Netflix documentary The Plastic Detox as part of our special series rollout — looking at how storytelling, science, and community come together to address the plastic pollution crisis. First, we explored the production side — how filmmakers bring these stories to life. Then we looked at the pollution itself — the chemicals and plastics making their way into our environment and even into our bodies. Today we focus on the people. Because behind every statistic, every study, and every headline about pollution, there are real families and real communities living with the consequences. Today we’re joined by Julie and Eric Isaac, whose story helps bring the human dimension of the plastic crisis into focus through their participation in The Plastic Detox, streaming on Netflix. The Coolest Show – brought to you by Hip Hop Caucus – features conversations on environmental justice and how we solve the climate crisis. Listen and subscribe here or at TheCoolestShow.com! The Production Effect with Josh “Bones” Murphy

As we continue our focus on how film and production function as tools for justice, we’re leaning into the idea that storytelling doesn’t just inform—it transforms. Because culture shapes policy. And policy shapes lives. When we talk about the climate crisis, we often focus on policy debates and scientific reports. But film has the power to make those realities personal to help us see the human stakes behind the data. Host Rev Yearwood is joined by Josh “Bones” Murphy, an award-winning filmmaker, director, and lifelong environmentalist whose work brings complex environmental issues to the screen in ways that challenge systems and spark conversation. From overfishing to plastic pollution, his films push us to look deeper at how our choices and our structures impact communities and ecosystems. He is also the co-director and producer on the Netflix documentary The Plastic Detox. The Pollution Effect with Dr. Shanna Swan and Professor Jasmine McDonald

When most people think about climate change, they picture melting glaciers or rising seas. But what if the climate crisis isn’t just happening around us? What if it’s happening inside us? What if the same pollution warming the planet is also disrupting our hormones, our fertility, and the future of our children? This episode features Dr. Shanna Swan and Professor Jasmine McDonald — two leading scientists whose research connects chemical exposure, plastics, reproductive health, cancer risk, and environmental justice. And through the Netflix documentary The Plastic Detox and ongoing public engagement, their work is reaching living rooms across the world. Trouble in the Water: Mississippi River w/ Sikowis Nobiss

The Mississippi River has shaped much of American history–from colonization and forming borders to enslavement and “Manifest Destiny.” This river basin is the largest drainage basin in the US, the second longest river in North America, and runs almost the entire length of the US before flowing into the Gulf of Mexico through southeast Louisiana. It covers about 40 percent of the continental United States, providing drinking water for nearly 20 million people. This lifeline for the nation is constantly facing challenges due to pollution from “big agriculture”, saltwater intrusion, the climate crisis, and more. These issues disproportionately affect the health, livelihoods, and cultural practices of Black and Indigenous communities in the region.  In this episode of The Coolest Show, Rev Yearwood speaks with Sikowis Nobiss, Executive Director of The Great Plains Action Society. They delve into the historical context of how these issues have evolved and the intersectionality of environmental racism in the Mississippi River Basin.  The Coolest Show – brought to you by Hip Hop Caucus Think 100% PODCASTS – drops new episodes every Monday on environmental justice and how we solve the climate crisis. Black Executive w/ Michael Regan

Our Black Executive series highlights Black people in pivotal roles in the Biden-Harris Administration. Given the Administration’s investment in climate and clean energy and its relatively short timeline, we want to ensure those individuals who have been tasked with what could accurately be called an “impossible feat” are seen and supported. Like the rest of us, they have humanity and their own vision for the work. While the Administration might not bring the entirety of their visions to fruition, we want to archive it all so that in community, we can continue to support their efforts for our people and the whole planet. Putting It All on the Line w/ Greg Dalton, Ariana Brocious & Jacqueline Patterson

On this Special Episode of “The Coolest Show”, Reverend Yearwood & Jacqueline Patterson join the “Climate One Podcast” , Hosted by Greg Dalton and Ariana Brocious. From Climate One: Climate affects everyone, but not equally. Those affected first and worst are often the same communities that suffer from housing and income inequality, and climate and societal injustice. Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr. has made striving for social, economic and climate justice his lifelong pursuit. A charismatic leader, Rev. Yearwood embraces his role as a unifying force, working with front-line climate activists and billionaire politicians alike.  Jacqueline Patterson is former Senior Director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program. She’s also the founder and executive director of The Chisholm Legacy Project, a group that supports Black frontline climate leaders. Like Rev. Yearwood, she’s seen too many friends and relations die from exposure to industrial pollution. That’s one reason why she says a just transition needs to be driven by those on the ground. “Stop Cop City” Press Conference

Since our last episode on Stop Cop City, signatures of more than 116,000 Atlanta residents were gathered and submitted to the City of Atlanta in support of adding a referendum on the ballot. Atlanta officials have contested the submissions and used tactics such as doxxing signatories and enforcing RICO charges on local organizers and protesters. The case remains in limbo as we await the 11th U.S. Circuit Court’s decision on whether or not a deadline extension for signatures was lawful. In this episode of The Coolest Show, Hip Hop Caucus hosted a Stop Cop City press conference during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 52nd Annual Legislative Conference. Actors Amanda Seales and Kendrick Sampson, and activists Cliff Albright and Linda Sarsour used their platform to stand in solidarity with Atlanta residents. Parable of the Movement w/ The Black Hive

2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, a novel that prophesied the US’ rise in fascism and the global impact of the climate crisis. While Butler was unable to finish the trilogy in her lifetime and experienced frustrations encompassing climate solutions in her writing, people who continue to be inspired by her life and writings are building solutions Butler may have hoped for. The Black Hive @ M4BL recently launched Parable of the Movement, a narrative project and campaign that aims to: continue the work of Octavia Butler; lift up Black led EJ and climate solutions to the climate crisis; and build a space for deep learning, experimentation and alternatives. On this episode of The Coolest Show, be a fly on the wall at Parable of the Movement’s launch event during New York’s Climate Week. Speakers include Natalie Jeffers, lead of The Black Hive, Johari Farrar, and Black climate authors Aya De Leon, Emily Raboteau, and Kevin Aipopo. Profit Over People w/ Antonique Smith

The influence of Hollywood’s media and entertainment is undeniable. The narratives we consume impact our daily decisions and even affect changes in legislation. There are many parallels between activists and artists/entertainers, as well as the industries they are working within or fighting to end. “Profits over people is the core foundation of the issue. Because if some folks weren’t so concerned, so concerned with so much profit, then they would change their business model to be something that isn’t going to kill people,” said former TCS co-host Antonique Smith. On this episode of The Coolest Show, Antonique shares her experience and interviews live from the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City. Her and Rev Yearwood speak about being an artivist in today’s movement, the SAG-AFTRA strike and the future of climate storytelling. Rev Yearwood was recently the keynote speaker at the University of Maryland’s Environmental Justice and Health Disparities Symposium. The symposium theme was “people, power, & politics,” highlighting energy justice, climate change, power dynamics in environmental justice, and the use of technology in environmental justice work. On this episode of The Coolest Show, Rev Yearwood delivers an eye-opening message on the result of recent climate events impacting communities, and how big business is directly responsible for health emergencies for the people who inhabit these areas, and measures they use to continue the cycle. Black Executives w/ Jahi Wise

The scale of the climate crisis requires unprecedented investments to combat its causes and impacts. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) allocated $27 billion to EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), composed of three grant programs designed to: reduce greenhouse gas emissions; deliver the benefits of clean energy technologies to “low-income and disadvantaged” communities; and mobilize financing and private capital to stimulate the deployment of additional clean energy projects. Jahi Wise is the Acting Director for the GGRF and Senior Advisor to the Administrator. In this episode, he speaks with Rev Yearwood about climate finance, GGRF’s three programs, and the future he’s committed to creating for his children. Black in Executive w/ Hon. Shalanda Baker

The Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was established in 1978 by Congress. This Office was designed to ensure minority businesses and minority serving institutions could utilize DOE money, while also researching the effects of the energy system on Black and Brown communities. Prior to the Biden Administration, this Office was “underfunded, under-resourced, and structurally excluded from every policy conversation in the building for the last 50 years.” The Honorable Shalanda Baker, the Director of Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at DOE and Secretarial Advisor on Equity, spoke with Rev Yearwood about energy insecurity, developing energy justice frameworks for industry scale projects, and how the fossil fuel industry has impacted her lineage. The Referendum: Stop Cop City Pt. 2 w/ Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu & Shar Bates

The City of Atlanta has leased 381-acres of Weelaunee Forest, stolen Muscogee land, to the Atlanta Police Foundation for a police military facility funded by corporations. This would be the largest police training facility in the US in a primarily Black community who overwhelmingly oppose the project. Despite over fifteen hours of public comments against the project, the City Council has approved $67 million in public funding for Cop City. The plans include military-grade training facilities, a mock city to practice urban warfare, dozens of shooting ranges, and a Black Hawk helicopter landing pad. Residents have petitioned the municipal court of Atlanta to gather signatures for a binding referendum. With enough signatures, this would put whether or not Cop City gets built up for a vote on November’s ballot box. In this 2 part episode of The Coolest Show, Rev Yearwood speaks with community organizer Rev Keyanna Jones, economist Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu, and community advocate Shar Bates. They discuss the history of the area surrounding the Weelaunee forest, the legacy of environmental racism, the community’s work to get signatures, and “the Atlanta Way.” Support: https://www.copcityvote.com/ The post The Referendum: Stop Cop City Pt. 2 w/ Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu & Shar Bates appeared first on The Coolest Show.

Stop Cop City w/ Kamau Franklin, YoNasDa Lonewolf, and Destiny Harris

Hip Hop Caucus joins with activists, organizers, faith leaders and the Atlanta community who are calling for a stop to Cop City, defending the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, Georgia, and honoring the life of environmental activist Tortuguita who was killed by Atlanta police in January. Police violence and environmental activism are intimately connected not only through the power dynamics of economics, but also in the way they disproportionately threaten the ability for Black and Brown people to breathe and thrive. Replacing the nation’s largest urban forest with the largest militarized police training facility in North America would set a precedent for other proposed facilities across the country and fuel U.S. imperialism. The Coolest Show Host Rev Yearwood discusses what’s next for the movement with Community Movement Builders Founder Kamau Franklin, National Community Organizer YoNasDa Lonewolf, and Organizer, Artist, Abolitionist and Poet Destiny Harris. There’s a generation of organizers and activists that are burning out before they reach or cement themselves in adulthood. While this isn’t a new phenomenon because young people have been the foundation of many movements, the scale of young people engaged in the climate movement and the wide impact of the climate crisis should prompt us to be intentional with their care and repair. On this episode of The Coolest Show Destiny Hodges speaks to climate activist Vic Barrett and Mitchelle Mhaka, coordinator for the African Climate Alliance, about performative activism, tokenization, rest and recovery. Lateral Violence w/ Tara Houska & Anthony Rogers-Wright

The fossil fuel industry isn’t the only threat to our movement. It’s also how we treat each other. “Paradoxical osmosis” has us embracing the tactics of the oppression we swore we would usurp together. Lateral violence and burnout has people leaving the movement “cynical, bitter, jaded, and broken. And if that cycle continues, then this climate crisis will continue.” Tara Houska and Anthony Rogers-Wright join Rev Yearwood to reflect on their movement experience, the nonprofit industrial complex, and the need to build infrastructure for humanity. Care & Repair w/ Tamara Toles O’Laughlin

As Earth month ends and May ushers in mental health awareness, Climate Critical is calling to question the way the climate/environmental movement has been doing the work and how it hurts us. After surveying people from 106 different types of environmental organizations, researchers concluded everyone is burnt out.  “The movement takes on the attributes of the place where it was built, and America itself organizes everything about how it works to extract from Black and brown people, from women…” said Tamara Toles O’Laughlin, founder of Climate Critical and a producer of The Coolest Show. Care and repair is an ethos that ensures we take care of the inputs and people, that we hold space for humanity and rest as an active part of how we do our work. Tamara joins Rev Yearwood to discuss the dangers of burnout, pathological integrity, and the risk Black women are taking to ensure we are healthy and able to win.  Climate Critical’s full Climate Burnout Report releases on April 28th. We have invited Dr. Michael K. Dorsey, a recognized expert on global energy, environment, finance and sustainability matters, and who sits on the board of B.O.S.S (Black Owners of Solar Services) back to talk with us to dig a little deeper into the ongoing story of financial reckoning that is necessary to fight in this phase of the Climate Crisis. On the heels of conversations about climate finance campaigning, climate finance regulation, the implementation and deployment of inflation reduction act funds for infrastructure, energy and environmental defense, we believe it is important to talk about …what it’s all for.
