#0042 THE BRITISH BOBSLEIGH TEAM - HARD WORK BEATS TALENT!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. It's always been my goal to use the podcast to have conversations with interesting and inspiring people from all walks of life. And for me, they don't get much more inspiring than the guests that we're very lucky to be joined by on this episode. Not one, not two, not three, but four Olympic athletes. Brad Hall, Greg Cackett, Taylor Lawrence, and Leon Greenwood, the British Bobsleigh Team. We've spoken before about creatives adopting more of an athlete's mindset when it comes to thinking about achieving their goals. Well, on this episode, we get a direct insight into the minds of some of the best in the world. We discuss each team member's route into the unconventional sport of bobsleigh and the hurdles they've had to overcome to achieve history-making success as a team. We talk about setting goals and the discipline needed to stay focused on them, and how it's not always the big things, but often the little things that you do every day that can make the most difference The boys also give us an exclusive insight into what it's like behind the scenes as a team. The brotherhood and the camaraderie, the ups and the downs, and the pressure that can arise between them despite the fact that they're all chasing the same end goal. We talk about the Olympics and the disappointment of not quite achieving everything that they'd wanted to, and the almost post-games grief that can come as a result. But we also go into the mindset, the strength, the resilience needed to keep pushing forward, whatever the future might hold As I've said before, there is a lot that we, quote-unquote, "normal people," can learn from these elite human beings. They're four Olympians. They're in the top 0.00017% of the world, and these guys have inspired me so much over the last few years of knowing them that I'm sure they're gonna inspire you too. I'm very grateful to be able to have these guys on the podcast, and I'm very lucky to be able to call them my friends. #0041 TERRI TROVATO - AI FASHION CREATOR!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. This might be a controversial one, but on this episode I'm joined by AI creator, marketer, and also self-confessed romantic, Terri Trovato. Now, before anyone sees the words AI and starts immediately reaching for the pitchfork, I think it's important to say that this conversation isn't really about technology. It's about creativity Terri's journey began long before AI entered the mainstream. She worked on the edges of the fashion industry, assisting stylists in New York and trying to carve out a place for herself in a world that often felt difficult to access.Fashion was always the dream, but like so many other creative people, she found herself constantly looking through a window rather than being invited through the door. And then AI arrived. What started as simple curiosity quickly became an obsession, and armed with years of experience in styling, photography, advertising, and fashion, Terri discovered a new way to bring the images in her imagination to life. For the first time, she could create exactly what she saw in her mind without needing a studio, a model, a photographer, or even the actual clothes. Since then, her work has caught the attention of major fashion brands, taken her to Paris Fashion Week, led to collaborations with international fashion houses, and opened doors that she spent years trying to unlock through much more traditional routes In this conversation, we talk about Terri's route into the fashion industry, the frustrations of trying to break into a notoriously difficult world, and how an unexpected fascination with AI became the creative outlet that she'd been searching for.We explore the relationship between technology and creativity, discuss the difference between art and commerce, and ask whether AI is really something that artists should be afraid of. We also discuss gatekeeping, creative identity, and feeling like the ultimate imposter, but also what it feels like to finally be seen after years of feeling overlooked. Whether you're excited about AI, sceptical of it, or somewhere in between, I think you'll find this a really interesting conversation. #0040 ROSCO BRITTIN - A CACOPHONY OF CREATIVITY!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. What can I say about the guest on this episode? He's an artist. He loves flowers and nature. He creates collages, wallpaper, T-shirts, and now 3D sculptures that I want you to all check out, and it's all absolutely beautiful. But as you'll hear from this episode, he's so much more than that...He's a cacophony of creativity! But not just creativity, he's a cacophony of incredible energy as well, and it's massively infectious. He's someone who wants to get the most out of life. Someone who loves progression and wants to always be growing. A glass-half-full kind of human being! And he's funny. He's really funny! We discuss everything from having no plan, why style can be limiting, blagging your way into galleries, faking it until you make it, and even then still faking it a bit. #0039 TOM HICKS - BLACK COUNTRY TYPE!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. There's a certain beauty in the banal, everyday stuff that many people may overlook. On this episode, we are lucky to be joined by an artist who has turned his ability to see this beauty into a 10-year project. Tom Hicks of Black Country Type. Black Country Type is an ongoing photographic project. Tom applies his unique aesthetic to this region of the West Midlands in the UK, focusing on words, typography, handmade lettering and signs. He also photographs ‘types’ of architectural features, objects and the post-industrial landscape of the area. It's a project that's been described as willfully mundane. Gently humorous, but with a mournful edge, which I just thought was kind of beautiful. And it's a project that he's turned into a book. Seen him have multiple solo exhibitions. He sells his art in galleries and privately. His work's been featured in major publications like The Observer and The Guardian. His images have been commissioned by record labels and other brands. He's created sculptures, worked with poets and has so much more in the pipeline. And he's about to publish book number two. A book that legendary Rock God, Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame, has called 'A work of genius!' You can check it out and get a copy from the link below!BUY THE BOOK - BLACK COUNTRY TYPE IIWell, now I'm not sure there's much I can say that can really compete with that. So let's get into it.Check out the links to Tom's website and social media to see more of his amazing work. #0038 EMMA BROWN - SURRENDER TO THE PROCESS!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. On this episode, we're lucky to be joined by award-winning photographer, visual storyteller, and artist Emma Brown. Emma's work sits at this kind of intersection of art, humanity, and process.Emma creates stunning images using a technique called wet plate photography. And since finding it, she has completely immersed herself in this historic process that was developed in the 1850s. A raw, unforgiving, and beautifully imperfect form of photography that Emma describes as a 'Dark mistress. Full of magic and ritual, where you have to just surrender to the process.' She's the recipient of the Juliet Margaret Cameron Award, among many others, and her work has been featured in recognised publications like Focus Quarterly, and she's been selected for multiple exhibitions, including The Royal Academy Summer Show. But beyond the accolades, Emma's work spans portraiture and music, as well as long-term collaboration projects with NGOs and charities, including volunteering with the Sahrawi Refugee Community in both Algeria and here in the UK. It's her dedication to ethical storytelling that really defines Emma's legacy as a photographer. In this episode, we discuss Emma's creative journey. We explore everything from her route into photography, the realities of working in the industry, and we go into detail about the work that she does for unrepresented communities. Where she uses her passion for photography to help others tell their stories through images. We go into detail about Emma learning wet plate photography and falling in love with its magic, and why it is just so important to surrender. Slow down and be truly present with the process. We talk about the vulnerability of being an artist, putting our heads above the parapet and saying, "This is what I do!" And we also discuss why we should all consider taking the 'Un-Path', because the unconventional routes often lead to the most incredible journeys. Check out the links to Emma's website and social media, where you can see more of her amazing work. #0037 WEAR CHANGE - EVERYBODY CAN WIN!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. You've probably already worked out that I love using the podcast to shine a light on the people in my world who are doing interesting and inspiring things. Well, this episode is no different, as we are joined by my wonderful friend Gary Bonnick.Gary, along with his wife Shannon, runs a business called Wear Change, A Shop, an online platform that sells a wide range of vintage and pre-loved clothing and paraphernalia. Wanting to do something a bit different in a world filled with fast fashion. Wear Change focuses on sustainability, building community, and giving back to the people around them. They've recently signed a partnership with the Salvation Army, under which a percentage of all sales from Wear Change will go directly to them and to the amazing work they do in the community. But not only that, Wear Change wants to help other artisan makers and creators. So if you are a fashion designer or perhaps an artist, then Wear Change wants to be a platform or a storefront for you to sell your work, too, because, as Gary tells us, it's bigger than just them and there's opportunity for everybody to win. That's Gary through and through. And one of the reasons why I wanted to get him on the podcast, he's one of those people who genuinely cares about others and someone whose energy lifts the people around him, whether he knows it or not.In this episode, we talk about Gary's journey, the early days where, as most of us did, He was searching for direction. We talk about his evolution and the passion and drive that he's now found, starting and running Wear Change alongside his fantastic wife, Shannon, supporting each other every step of the way.We discuss why fashion is a language and why we need so much more colour in this somewhat beige world we all live in. We also talk about having strong work ethics, the lessons that we can all learn from failure, why rejection is simply a sign of redirection, and so much more.Be sure to check out the links to the Wear Change social media and shop below:Hope you enjoy this episode of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast.WEAR CHANGE SHOP: https://www.vinted.co.uk/member/67944777-shanntWEAR CHANGE INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/wear_changeuk/Support the showCNL WEBSITE: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/joinCNL INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/creativenowhereland/CNL PODCAST MUSIC: https://www.instagram.com/jjodabeats/

#0036 SKETCH AVENUE - ELEVATING IN A CHALLENGE!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. There are always hurdles on any journey, especially on a creative one; some people may fall and simply give up, and then there are others who can face challenges, however tough, and they seem to elevate and rise to it! They may not know how, while they’re in it, maybe it’s forced upon them, but they just do it!And our guest on this episode is a great example of that. We’re joined by ceramicist Ayesha Bibi from Sketch Avenue.Looking at Ayesha’s work, it might be hard to believe that she only began working in ceramics a couple of years ago. But she took on the challenge of learning a new skill head-on and now creates the most incredible pieces, which are often abstract yet ergonomically designed and inspired by everything from architecture, the Bauhaus movement, and even pop art. Now she may be relatively new to ceramics, but Ayesha has repeatedly sold out her collections, and her work can now be found in locations all over the world, including LA and Dubai. But not only that, in 2025, Ayesha featured on the UK TV show, ‘Be your own Boss’, where she was mentored by 'Not on the High Street' founder, Holly Tucker. Which helped give Ayesha more confidence to push forward and develop Sketch Avenue further as a business and a brand She’s definitely been busy. Now, you might be thinking ok, where are the challenges?Well, the journey for Ayesha to get here is a long one, and I could tell you all of the hurdles that she's faced along the way, but surely it’s better to hear about them from the person who faced them, overcame them, and who elevated in the face of every challenge put in front of her. So…You can check out the links to Ayeshas social media and website to see the amazing work below:Hope you enjoy this episode of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast.SKETCH AVENUE WEBSITE: https://sketchavenue.com/SKETCH AVENUE INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/sketchavenue_/Support the showCNL WEBSITE: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/joinCNL INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/creativenowhereland/CNL PODCAST MUSIC: https://www.instagram.com/jjodabeats/

#0035 JAMES COLLINGS - DISCIPLINE MEETS IMAGINATION!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. The aim of the podcast is to bring you interesting and inspiring guests. And on this episode, we are joined by someone who inspires me regularly. Three times a week, in fact. My boxing coach, my friend, and armchair philosopher, James Collings. You might be thinking, why has he got a boxing coach on the podcast? Well, we discuss how boxing is an art. It could be considered as one of the ultimate forms of creativity, as it requires skill, imagination, and split-second problem-solving. It's like violent chess, but with consequences, and it can teach us more than we might imagine about not only ourselves, but about life.We go into detail about the benefits of combat sports, like boxing, to take you out of your comfort zone, build resilience, humility, and the perseverance to keep going through adversity. We talk about strength, vulnerability, and how to stop being held back by the fear of being judged because, realistically, no one will ever judge you harder than you judge yourself. We also discuss James's creative journey, his talent for music, and boxing. His time spent studying at the Royal College of Music in London, and how the two skill sets overlap. We talk about James starting his own gym, THE JAB LAB and his YouTube channel that provides workouts and great insights into the world of boxing. We also talk about philosophy and the importance of having strong values, smiling at strangers and enjoying your life. And we explain why it's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.You can check out the links to James' YouTube Channel and social media below: Hope you enjoy this episode of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast.THE JAB LAB INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/thejab_lab/THE JAB LAB YOUTUBE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/@Thejab_labSupport the showCNL WEBSITE: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/joinCNL INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/creativenowhereland/CNL PODCAST MUSIC: https://www.instagram.com/jjodabeats/

#0034 CLAIRE RILEY - DO I MAKE YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE?
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. On this episode, we are joined by self-portrait artist and my mate Claire Riley. As a teenager, Claire was diagnosed with M.E and later with bipolar disorder. Claire joins us to talk about her new body of work, 'Do I make you feel uncomfortable?' Where she's exploring her own mental illness through self-portraiture. The project is, in her words, honest, brutal, surprising and maybe a little bit ugly, but it's also very real. And to me, it's incredibly brave. It's a project that Claire hopes can open up more conversations about mental health and hopefully help other people who may be going through something similar. We discuss Claire's whole creative journey and all of the parts that have led her to now, within this new body of work, not only find what she's supposed to be doing with her creativity, but also find herself. In addition to being a practicing artist, Claire is also a marketing manager for an art gallery. Claire gets to spend her days talking about and being surrounded by art and artists, but not only that, she gets to be behind the scenes of a gallery and understand how it all works, which gives her a very unique perspective. And as a result, Claire has learned some great lessons that she kindly shares with us. Most important of which being, 'Don't let anyone tell you that your work isn't good enough if you believe in what you're doing, you've already won!'The masks are off with this one, and there is definitely no sugarcoating it! We discussed some topics that may be uncomfortable for some people, including mental illness, medication and suicide, but that's the whole point. We have to be able to have these open and honest conversations, and that's the reason why I've got Claire on the podcast. You can check out the links to Claire's social media and see the project below:Hope you enjoy this episode of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast.CLAIRE RILEY INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/clairerileyfineart/Support the showCNL WEBSITE: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/joinCNL INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/creativenowhereland/CNL PODCAST MUSIC: https://www.instagram.com/jjodabeats/

#0033 GROW UP ART - CHOOSE LIFE! CHOOSE ART!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose art!Well, if you're of a certain age, then that might sound a little bit familiar, but on this episode, we're joined by an artist who has done just that... they've chosen art. An artist who now uses their love of creativity, screen prints, fluorescent inks, and, in their words, potty mouth high jinks to shine a light on some of the inequalities and injustices in the world that make them angry. On this episode, we are joined by Blam from Grow Up Art. Blam grew up wanting to be an artist, but not knowing what that looked like, he found himself working as a designer within the film and music industry. And it was here that Blam helped create some of the most iconic imagery of the nineties. When a brief for the Danny Boyle film Trainspotting landed on his desk, he was asked to design the poster. Yeah, that's right! Blam designed the original Trainspotting poster, and that alone would be a great reason to have him on the podcast. But the creative journey didn't stop there.Leaving the limitations and deadlines of the design world behind him when his children were born. Blam began to pursue different avenues of creativity and, for the next 10 years, worked on his own ventures and, more importantly, on being a dad to his children. The transition from designer to artist came much later, when Blam and his eldest son, Jack, began working and creating together as Grow Up Art, producing a wide spectrum of work, all with that comedic potty-mouth edge. But now, having grown apart, Blam is riding solo, and with his influences in punk, his work has taken a slightly more political edge, using art and creativity in his words to 'Call out Cunts!'The most famous of which being the 'Turd Reich'. A piece of work that went viral in 2025, being picked up by The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Guardian. And a piece that was released for free and has been downloaded over a hundred thousand times worldwide. We discuss the whole journey and so much more. We talk about everything from making work that makes people spit their drinks out. The Broken Filters, Democratic Art and Blam's latest project with Atom Gallery, TrainSpotters, the exhibition. An exhibition that takes us full circle, and which celebrates the 30th anniversary of Trainspotting. Revisited and reimagined by 30 other artists, and where some of the profits will go to The Big Issue. You can check out the links to Blam's work while you're listening to the podcast, of course. But we go into so much in this one that it's probably best to leave it up to the Blam to tell the story. #0032 MR EDWARDS - ART IS SHIT! OR IS IT?
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Art is shit! Or is it?On this episode, we are joined by Artist, Mr Edwards, who describes his work as a Pop Dada Party filled with a cast of characters, all of his own making. As long as it makes him laugh, anything is fair game when it comes to him creating. Mr Edwards has had an interesting creative journey. From studying at St. Martin's and the Royal College of Art to a career spent as a designer working for ID magazine. Then running his own agency, Nice. Where he was working with high-profile clients like Converse and Levi's.A collector of all things visual. We discuss all of that and more, like the big decision to immigrate to Australia and the shift that pushed Mr Edwards towards art and creating without worrying if people get offended or not. Because, well, sometimes they do get offended. You can check out the links to Mr Edwards' work while you're listening to the podcast, of course. #0031 LOLO - DARKNESS, CONNECTION AND THE ART OF BEING!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Casual and meaningless are everywhere right now, but real connections are rare, and finding those connections in a world that seems increasingly disconnected is what the podcast is all about. It's what I'm all about! It's a little unusual, but when you feel that connection, sometimes you just have to act, and this episode is the epitome of that idea.Completely unplanned. Just two humans who the universe aligned in a city of over 2 million people and who found a connection through honesty, vulnerability, art, darkness, and the beauty that can be found in some of that darkness.I believe that everything is connected and that I was always supposed to meet the guest who's on this episode. He's a creator, a graphic designer, he draws, he's a DJ, a music producer, and he has his own record label, and he uses all of these ways to express himself creatively. But this episode isn't about the work as such. It's more about two people connecting through vulnerability, honesty, and openness. We get deep on this one. We talk about the journey, and we discuss difficult topics like grief and loss and how leaning into some of those harder emotions and connecting to the deeper side of ourselves is often where you'll find the most beautiful stuff. We discuss living in the moment, resilience and how we have to keep going no matter what happens in life because we are the art! There's no such thing as a coincidence, and the universe put us together when we needed to meet. Two like-minded souls, finding connection through art and experiences. And that's what the podcast is all about. He doesn't call himself an artist. He's an expressor, and his name is Lolo. #0030 HANNAH MILLER - WHAT'S YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE?
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Now, this might seem like a massive question, but are you living your life with purpose? Maybe it's something that you haven't even thought about until right now, or maybe you think it's about finding that single grand calling or once-in-a-lifetime revelation that's reserved for the lucky few who have just managed to get it all worked out well.On this episode, we are joined by the wonderful Hannah Miller. An author, a businesswoman, and a strength coach who specialises in helping to guide people to live lives with more intention and purpose. And she has literally written a book on it.Studies have shown that having a clear sense of purpose improves not only our mental and physical health but also boosts our wellbeing, lowers our stress levels, and even increases life expectancy. So Hannah's here to help. By explaining why purpose isn't just reserved for the select few and why it's not about a single grand calling, but that finding our purpose can happen for anyone in any situation, as long as we're willing to do the work. We discuss how purpose is something that builds, something that evolves and shifts over time when we understand who we are as people and our values. It's something that's already within us based on our talents, personalities, and experiences. But I get it. It all probably still sounds a bit daunting, right? But that's why we also go into some of the practical and actionable steps in Hannah's book, 'The Purpose Pursuits: Eight Steps to the Life You've Been Searching For.' Steps that we can all use to try and uncover or build a sense of purpose in our lives. That's shaped by our own unique strengths and passions. You can check out the links to all of Hannah's platforms, including the link to buy the book, while you're listening to the podcast, of course. But for now, sit back and let Hannah explain why purpose isn't just about discovering what you are here to do, but actually about who you are here to be.Hope you enjoy this episode of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast.BUY IT NOW: 'The Purpose Pursuits: Eight Steps to the Life You've Been Searching For.' #0029 CLAIRE HILTON - CREATE ART NO ONE SEES!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. What's the difference between art therapy and having a creative practice that feels therapeutic? As it turns out, quite a lot—and in this episode, art psychotherapist and practising artist Claire Hilton helps us understand those differences.Claire has always been creative and understood the benefits of creating from a young age as a way of processing some of the feelings related to her father being diagnosed with a brain tumour. With this understanding, Claire went on to study Fine Art and then a Master's in Art Psychotherapy, turning her love of creating and her love of people into something that has a real impact for the clients that she works with. For many of us, art is a way to express something or communicate a feeling, often with a finished piece in mind. But art therapy isn’t about creating a final outcome. It’s about connecting with ourselves, exploring what’s happening beneath the surface, and focusing on the process. As an art psychotherapist, Claire witnesses that process and helps join the dots of what may be going on internally for her clients. In this episode, we talk about Claire's creative journey, her path to becoming an art psychotherapist, and how she balances that with her own art practice. We also explore why there’s no such thing as good or bad art, why people with an existing creative practice may struggle with art therapy, the bravery it takes to create, and the value of making art no one else ever sees.Claire also shares tips for beating creative block and, a big one for many of us, how to overcome the fear of things not being perfect.Check out the links below to both Claire's psychotherapy work as well as her personal artwork while you're listening to the podcast, of course! #0028 CASEY BAILEY - WORDS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. On this episode, we're joined by Poet, Writer, Educator, and Performer Casey Bailey. Casey is a storyteller and, from a young age, realised the power of words to influence people in both a positive and sometimes negative way.His work spans Poetry, Music, Theatre, Books, and TV, creating work for both the Commonwealth Games and the Hit TV show, The Peaky Blinders. But, at the core of it all is education and community. For Casey, it's all about being a positive input. To create a positive impact. Things could have easily gone very differently for Casey though. Growing up in an environment of crime, poverty, and gang culture, Casey had to try and balance two lives, one studying for university, and one in and around the streets. A balance that nearly cost him his life. While trying to diffuse a situation, Casey got stabbed, a life-changing moment that could have gone either way.Luckily, Casey chose to turn that negative into a positive, and what he's achieved as a result has created an unquestionable impact on many people's lives. In this episode, we discuss Casey's journey from being kicked out of English class to becoming Birmingham's Poet Laureate. Being stabbed and balancing two lives, forgiveness, and not being defined by our mistakes. We talk about music, poetry, and theatre, and how limitations can actually aid creativity. We discuss teaching and how we help open conversations to inspire young people, but most importantly, how if you can't stop and feel like the stuff that you've done has been positive for you or other people, then what's the point?Check out the links below to see Casey's website and social media while you're listening to the podcast, of course! #0027 EMMA WOOLLEY - FACES BECOME MEMORIES!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Faces become vessels of lingering memory. The world falls away, but the human remains. Beautiful Right? Well, these are just some of the poetic ways that our latest guest uses to describe her work. Emma Woolley is a contemporary portrait artist with a bold and expressive style who uses her work as a way of processing emotions and memories, not only to connect with herself, but also as a way of connecting with other people. Emma studied fine art and then went back to study graphic design and illustration at university, and has spent the last 20 years working as an art director using her creativity to tell stories, problem-solve, and translate ideas for big brands and businesses. But after a series of life-changing events, including sadly losing her Mum, forced her into stillness for the first time in a very long time. Emma found her way back to painting, realising that she could use it as a way of finding hope again, and a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. No longer neglecting herself as an artist, painting has been at the forefront for the last few years, and she's been prolific. Emma has produced multiple bodies of work, including 'The Wonder Series' and 'The Space Between Us'. She's been shortlisted for the Women in Art Prize, there's been a solo exhibition and also a beautiful 72-page hardback book, 'Paint Lingers', which acts as a time capsule or kind of visual diary of Emma's journey back to painting. In this episode, we discuss the whole creative journey so far. Everything from Emma finding her style and, in her words, painting in mid fidelity, to what it's like to balance being an art director with being an actual artist. The need for creatives to feel fulfilled, the use of art to process some of those tough emotions, why telling your story is so important and why connection never stops and why it's one of the most important things for us humans to hold onto. #0026 SOPHIE DERRICK - WHAT MAKES A 'PROPER' ARTIST?
Send us Fan MailWelcome to The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. When do you get to call yourself a 'proper' artist? Is it when you sell your first piece of work? Is it when you've done a master's degree? Is it when you've exhibited internationally, had sellout shows, and amassed a huge social media following? Or is it when your work is recognised by huge art world names like the Saatchi Gallery or The Royal Academy?Well, our guest on this episode, Sophie Derrick, has done all of that and more, and even she sometimes struggles with that question. Sophie is a portrait artist, often using herself as the subject and the canvas. Who plays with the dualities of photography and painting, the real and the abstract, tactile paint and the flat image to create work that is both bold and in your face, and also kind of hidden and intriguing. In this episode, Sophie talks us through her creative journey from studying fine art at Leeds University, finding her distinct style and some of the ideas behind that style, to some of the challenges of navigating the art world while doing a master's degree at the same time. Imposter syndrome, and the solitude of being alone in the studio a lot as an artist with little or no feedback coming your way.We talk about taxidermied animals and about an interview to work for Damien Hirst. What it's like exhibiting internationally and at galleries like the Saatchi Gallery and what it was actually like to be selected for the Royal Academy Summer Show. But we also talk about, in Sophie's words, her best body of work and solo show 'Close to Nothing'.And most impressively, what it looks like when trying to create. Follow your passion and be a quote-unquote 'proper' artist, while being a busy mom of three young children. No, easy task, as I'm sure you can imagine! #0025 CARL STIMPSON - DON'T OVERTHINK IT, MAKE IT!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. On this episode, we're joined by East London-based artist, painter, and printmaker Carl Stimpson.Growing up in a small town, Carls' influences weren't the classic art from the big galleries because, well, it just wasn't easily accessible. His major art influences came from the stuff around him, the comic books, the cartoons, the magazines, and the advertising, all of which have helped define Carl's distinct style of work.Despite battling terrible shyness, Carl's creative talents were recognised by his father. Who encouraged him to pursue a more creative life and go and study fine art at university, which set the wheels in motion to a life dedicated to creating. In this episode, we discuss Carl's creative journey from perfecting his craft as a painter and a colourist, to overcoming the hurdles of being painfully shy and instead of talking, using his art as a means of communicating ideas and emotions to people. We also talk about Carl's multiple solo shows, including a pretty crazy one in Russia, selling a painting to Noel Gallagher from Oasis, and how social media is actually great for building your network as an introvert. We also talk about how, in the purest way possible, as long as Carl can create, it doesn't matter what it takes. It's all about creating!Check out the links below to see Carl's work while you're listening to the podcast, of course! #0024 JACK QUDDUS - LIGHTING THE WAY TO SUCCESS!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. Now, one of the things I love most about doing this podcast is getting to share the stories of people who take their creativity and actually turn it into something real. And today’s guest has done that in the most electrifying way possible—literally. Jack Quddus, the founder of Neon CowAt just 23 years old, Jack has already achieved what many entrepreneurs spend decades chasing. He’s created custom neon signs for huge names like Gymshark, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Premier League football clubs, NFL teams, and even rapper Ja Rule. But Jack’s story isn’t just about building signs—it’s about building a vision. Starting out at his mum’s kitchen table, Jack taught himself everything he knows through sheer determination, curiosity, and a relentless work ethic. His entrepreneurial spark was lit long before Neon Cow, from selling sweets in the school playground to learning vital business lessons from his grandparents, Derek and Pauline, who’ve run their Birmingham corner shop for over 60 years. In this episode, we explore Jack’s journey from property finance to a solo trip to New York that changed everything, leading him to leave the corporate world behind and take the leap from side hustle into running his own creative business. We discuss what it's taken to get to where Jack is. The non-negotiables, the power of 1% marginal gains, the importance of self-belief and gratitude, and why focusing on your own path is key to long-term success.Jack’s story is a reminder that extraordinary things can start small. But if you’re willing to put in the work, the possibilities are endless.Whether you’re dreaming of starting a side hustle, building a brand, or just looking for some motivation, this episode is packed with insights you won’t want to miss.Check out the links below to the Neon Cow Instagram and the Website as you listen. #0022 PJ ELLIS - WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season 2 of the Creative Nowhere Land Podcast. We've got some great guests lined up for you this season, so let's start as we mean to go on.I've always said that I want Creative Nowhere Land to be a place that inspires others to do the things that inspire them. And I was racking my brain as to who should be the first guest to start us off for season two. Should it be an artist, a poet, a musician, maybe. But after recording this episode, I knew it had to be this guest. Someone who, up until recently, probably wouldn't have even considered themselves creative, but someone who is one of the most authentic and inspiring humans that I've met in a long time...Mr. PJ Ellis. You might recognise the name as, yes, PJ was on Season 3 of the Reality TV show Big Brother, but that's not the reason why I've got him on the podcast. A lot's happened since then. Trust me! A family, a law career, a digital marketing agency, setting up and being part of multiple charities that have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for amazing causes. There are the years spent working tirelessly to champion amazing people. And now he's a radio DJ who tries to get people smiling every day. Now, if you are a 'creative', you might wonder how this is relevant to you. Well, PJ's story is one of overcoming adversity and anxiety, reinvention, fame and celebrity. The masks we wear to survive and the moments that strip them away to reveal our true purpose, and most importantly, showing up for ourselves as well as other people. They're human issues, not just creative issues that we all go through, and we go into all of them in this episode. So, if you are feeling a little stuck or uninspired, give this one a listen, as I'm sure there's something that you can take away from it that will help you on whatever journey you are on.I wanna dedicate the first episode of Season 2 of The Creative Nowhere Land Podcast to PJ's mum, Marian Ellis, who is sadly no longer with us, but who, as you'll hear, has left a lasting legacy of warmth, kindness, and generosity, that is evident in everything that PJ does to lift up as many people around him as he can.PJ's journey reminds us that our most winding paths often lead to our greatest purpose, and that in a world focused on what we acquire, our legacy ultimately rests in what we give.Check out the links below to PJ's Instagram and The Mommys Boy Website as you listen. A bit of a lesson log—21 things I’ve learned from 21 brilliant guests. You’ll hear insights, like why “creativity looks different for everyone,” how “passion, and consistency” are key ingredients to success, and why you shouldn’t “pull away from the things that could change your life because of fear.” We talk about creativity, imposter syndrome, resilience, and why the hardest part is often just starting. I also reflect on what this podcast has taught me—about listening, creating, and pushing through self-doubt.It’s been humbling and hugely inspiring to reflect back, and I hope that in this episode, you’ll find something that resonates with your own creative or personal journey. So, if you’re curious about creativity, craving a bit of inspiration, or just want to know what 21 conversations can teach you about persistence, purpose, and passion—this one’s for you.Whether you’ve been here from episode one or just joined us, thanks for being here. #0019 SHELBY BILLINGHAM - THE MUSE, THE MUSIC AND THE MOVIES!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land podcast. On this episode, we're joined by international model, music producer, and all-round creative force, Shelby Billingham.Shelby Billingham defies the stereotype most people might have about models. Far from being "just a pretty face," this international fashion model has spent a decade building an impressively diverse creative career through sheer determination and an unwavering belief in her own potential.Shelby’s modelling career started at just 17 when she signed with global agency IMM, but her creative drive began long before that — from performing with the English Youth Ballet to playing guitar and throwing herself into all things expressive. Over the last 10 years, she’s worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gucci, Flannels, Boohoo, and Wella, and built her reputation as a model. In this episode, Shelby gives us a behind-the-scenes look into the fashion world — not just the glossy highlights, but the tough moments too. We talk about the resilience, hustle, and adaptability it takes to stay grounded and keep pushing in such a high-pressure environment. But Shelby’s journey doesn’t stop at modelling. We also get into her passion for music production and DJing, where she’s already making waves, performing at events in Dubai and Ibiza. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s now stepping into the world of acting — with roles in the latest Mission Impossible film and an upcoming BBC drama (she’s not allowed to say which one yet…).Shelby’s story took a harrowing turn when a chemical burn from a skincare product landed her in hospital on a ventilator and could have ended her career. But what followed was a powerful comeback — rebuilding her confidence, rediscovering her creativity, and proving just how strong the human spirit can be.Shelby's philosophy of opening doors for yourself and never putting all your eggs in one basket offers a masterclass in adaptation and perseverance for anyone navigating creative industries or feeling stuck in their career. So enjoy and we hope it inspires you in some way!Check out the links below to Shelby's Instagram as you listen.SHELBY BILLINGHAM INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/shelbybillingham/Support the showCNL WEBSITE: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER: https://www.creativenowhereland.com/joinCNL INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/creativenowhereland/CNL PODCAST MUSIC: https://www.instagram.com/jjodabeats/

Imbue and his work have been featured in The Guardian, Art Net and in Forbes Magazine. But, to really understand it, you need to see it for yourself! He's stolen a statue from The Louvre and has even made art from £1 million worth of shredded cash!In his first ever long-form interview, we talk about his creative journey and his work. Which is sometimes hard for even him to put into one particular box. Some might call it Pop Art? Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land podcast. On this episode, we're joined by Boxi Trixi. Originally from Argentina, Boxi grew up around skateboarding and the hardcore punk music movement of the 1990s. Boxi creates power figures or totems that he hopes the viewer builds a relationship with and can inspire them in their lives. Despite spending years working in some of the best restaurants in both Argentina and Spain. And he would say he's not a Musician. Despite discovering a revolutionary new instrument, which opened doors allowing him to perform all over the world and collaborate with famous musicians for more than 15 years. So how does Boxi describe himself?Well, in this episode we go into his remarkable journey from Argentina to the UK through caves, kitchens, and concert halls. #0014 CLARE GARRAD - AN ABSTRACT JOURNEY TO FULFILMENT!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land podcast. In this episode, we're joined by Abstract Artist, Clare Garrad. Abstract art is one of the most popular forms of art. But also, arguably, one of the most contentious. With the common misconception that you're just slapping paint on a canvas. It's easy. It doesn't mean anything or that anybody could do it. Well, Clare gives us an insight into what it actually involves, and for her at least, it's so much more. Clare discusses her intuitive creative process with music and emotions always at the heart of her work, influencing the colour palette, the mood, and the composition of a piece. Often bold and immersive, Clare explores the synesthetic connection between music she loves and visual expression. Using them to translate some of life's highs and lows into her art. We also discuss Clare's journey to get to where she is now—spending ten years drifting through various non-creative jobs, feeling somewhat lost and unfulfilled. Until a life-changing moment forced Clare to rethink and reassess everything she was doing. Now established as a full-time artist with a solo show coming up, we also discuss some more universal things like overcoming imposter syndrome, building resilience, balancing motherhood with creativity, the importance of community and mentorship, and so much more. Clare's passion for her work, and also the power of connection, is infectious. So we hope you enjoy it too.Check out all of the links below to Clare's work and sit back and let Clare tell you why abstract art, for her at least, is a whole lot more than just slapping paint on a canvas. Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land podcast! In this episode, I’m joined by one of my best friends, the incredibly talented commercial artist and illustrator, Matt Johnson. Known by his creative alias Fuzzy Concept, Matt has over 15 years of experience working across a wide range of projects, from private commissions to workshops and events. But what makes Matt’s story interesting is how he’s carved out a niche in working with schools and colleges, using art to inspire the next generation. We talk about Matt’s journey from honing his craft as a draftsman and artist in the early days to turning his passion into a sustainable career. It’s a story of creativity and finding a way to make your art pay the bills. Matt also shares insights on what it takes to teach art, the different approaches needed when working with young people versus adults, and the joy of helping others express themselves, build confidence, and be inspired by the power of art.We also discuss the, often difficult, balancing act of being a commercial artist—creating work to someone else’s brief while attempting to find time to explore the personal projects that fuel your creative soul. #0011 LACHLAN MONAGHAN - BREAKING THE BOUNDARIES OF BALLET!
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Creative Nowhere Land podcast! In this episode, I was lucky enough to sit down with Lachlan Monaghan, the male principal lead dancer from the Birmingham Royal Ballet. We talk about Lachlan's journey and how, at 16, he left Australia to come to London to study at the Royal Ballet School to become an elite-level, world-class dancer, Which is quite astounding, really, now knowing that ballet wasn't even Lachlan's first love. Having been told that he would never reach the level of principal dancer, Lachlan's story is one of resilience, bravery, passion and determination. Overcoming the hurdles put in his way.We talk about the most exhilarating performance of Lachlan's career, Black Sabbath, the ballet. Stepping out of his comfort zone and not only dancing, but also singing a solo in front of a sell-out crowd that included Sharon Osbourne and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. This gave Lachlan the chance to showcase one of his other passions, singing. We joke in the podcast about Lachlan being some sort of creative polymath or renaissance man, but he really is. Somehow finding the time and focus to not only dance professionally at a world-class level, but he sings, plays the piano, performed one-man shows back in Sydney, he's a choreographer, he teaches, but he also takes the most beautiful photographs, capturing the unseen, more intimate, behind the scenes moments of the ballet world. There's so much good stuff in this one about self belief and the importance of being versatile and never being afraid to try new things. Get inspired by Lachlan Monaghan’s incredible story and his dedication to both the art of ballet and the art of breaking its boundaries.Check out the links to the Lachlans social media below.
