The Fury Pod

Sarah Hiltz is a songwriter living and working in Toronto, Ontario, Canada who has spent the last several years learning about the ways we experience, express and repress anger as humans, and writing an album of songs about it called Calm Fury (March 2022). The Fury Pod explores these themes through conversations that centre around the way that anger intersects with our creativity, our communication, our spirituality and our overall growth.     Anger and Food

    Join us as we speak with Suzanne Barr about the connections between food, emotion, activism and rest.  Suzanne Barr is a chef with a signature flair for fresh comfort food. Her impressive list of roles includes Head Chef at True True Diner in Toronto, owner of Saturday Dinette and being  a resident judge on Food Network Canada's, Wall of Chefs. Alongside this work, Suzanne regularly advocates for food security, marginalized communities, mental health, and pay equity. In 2022, Suzanne released her beautiful book My Ackee Tree: A Chef's Memoir of Finding Home in the Kitchen. Suzanne is currently based in Florida with her husband Johnnie Karas and their son where she is developing a product line with Suzanne Barr Food and working as a consultant. The Fury Pod is produced and edited by Sarah Hiltz and Sandi Barrett.

    Anger and Optimism

    In Anger and Optimism, we travel through cyberspace to speak with Nicky Abdinor, a South African registered Clinical Psychologist, International Keynote Speaker, and Founder of the non-profit, Nicky's Drive. Nicky introduces us to the modality of schema therapy, speaks about the relationship between optimism, realism, anger, and hope, and we discuss the progress being made in creating more accessible spaces in the world.  The Fury Pod is produced and edited by Sarah Hiltz and Sandi Barrett.

    Anger and Costume Design

    We're back with our final episode before the holidays, this time joined by award-winning costume designer Kendra Terpenning. We spent a sunny spring afternoon together earlier this year, drinking lemonade, catching up, and chatting away about all kinds of things that are setting us ablaze lately, and Kendra shares some insightful ways she's dealt with anger over the years while working as a costume designer.

    Anger and Collective Creation

    In this episode, we sat down with Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava, the founders of the Toronto-based performance company Quote Unquote Collective. We talk about our relationship to feminism and how it evolves, their upcoming production Universal Child Care and the dynamics at play when working with others in a creative setting.

    Anger and Friendship

    In this episode, we get into the nitty-gritty of Anger and Friendship with psychology professor Kelci Harris, Ph.D. We chat about the difference between anger in our friendships versus how it shows up in family or romantic relationships, we exchange some personal stories about conflict in our own friendships, and Kelci shares about her research in personality and intergroup friendships. A truly enjoyable conversation among three friends spread across the continent.  This episode is dedicated to Amanda Taylor. 1988-2022.

    In this final episode of Season One of The Fury Pod, we speak to music therapist Jesse Dollimont about neuroscience and how the brain functions in connection with our emotions, and about the power of music to help us process those experiences.

    Anger and the Inner Critic

    We catch up with Mel Wiggins, a high school pal of Sarah's, to talk about the anger we direct at ourselves and learning to balance our inner critic with our intuition. Mel Wiggins lives in Northern Ireland with her husband Dave and two children. She spent a decade working in non-profit management and activism roles before pivoting to build a coaching business focussed on serving women across the UK and Europe who want to be more courageous in their lives and work.

    Join us for a special conversation with some of the musicians who played on Calm Fury. We look back on the recording process a bit and we speak to Charlotte Cornfield, Colleen Brown, Connor Walsh and Tara Kannangara about creativity and anger.
