Resilience but a strong sense of community was a theme of her 2 years.

Peter, a local farmer, spent 6 years as a boarder at ACK in the 1950s. Listen to his experiences and understand some of the hardships boarders endured. 

Jonas is worried about which 'assignment' he will get. His parents reassure him. His sister was 'given' to them at a naming ceremony, parents do not select the name for their children. 50 children  a year.

Jonas finally learns of his new assignment - except he has been SELECTED as the new 'receiver of memory' - the most important job in the community.  However, he has no idea at all what it means, except that he will encounter physical pain.

Ceremony of 12.  No unemployment - only 40 babies born each year. All given a number 1-40. They get given a job 'assignment' when they are eleven going into the 'ceremony of 12'.  BUT - Jonas is missed out - he is not given an 'assignment'.
