S6. Ep. 2: In Conversation with Dr. Victoria McBride | GP, The Importance Of Awareness, Advocating For Your Own Health

The GlioBabes, a podcast created by two young women who were both diagnosed with brain tumours at a young age. Mel and Mol are creating a safe space to talk about their experiences and to raise awareness of brain tumours and ill health within the young population. In Season 6 we have all the professionals! Episode 2, we bring on a much anticipated professional…a GP! But one we think is awesome and has contributed much to the brain tumour community.Today we’re joined by Dr Victoria McBride, a GP from Scotland whose connection to brain tumours is both professional and personal. After her family experienced a glioblastoma diagnosis, Victoria began advocating for better awareness and support for people facing less survivable cancers, like brain tumours. She’s taken those conversations all the way to policymakers, calling for earlier diagnosis and more research. We know people affected by brain tumours have said on and off the podcast how difficult access and care in primary settings can be – from needing to see a GP multiple times, to not feeling believed or heard by healthcare professionals. With a large proportion of diagnoses happening in A&E, we’re asking those questions all of us have around barriers and access when it comes to seeing your GP, or getting any further. We’re really looking forward to exploring what it means to sit on both sides of the consultation room when it comes to brain tumours.Support links:The Brain Tumour CharityCall 0808 800 0004 Monday - Friday 9-5Email [email protected] Adult [email protected] Phone as above 0808 800 0004 and ask for The Young Adults ServiceBrain Tumour Support https://www.braintumoursupport.co.uk/Samaritans (24/7UK wide) – 116 123In an emergency, visit A&E or dial 999Please don't be alone.
