COMING ATTRACTIONS - MAY 25 - STEAL THIS STORY, PRESSURE & SPECIALS

INTERNET DISRUPTION NOTICE: We have been without internet service for three days now and the likelihood of us getting it back today, Memorial Day, is slim (to none). Meaning, both specials today, PRESSURE sneak @ 2 and THE BIRDCAGE (at 7) have been replaced by STEAL THIS STORY PLEASE, which will now screen three times at 2, 5 & 7. Serious apologies for this.MON MAY 25 - STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE @ 2 & 5 & 7TUE MAY 26 -  STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE @ 5 & 7 - OR PRESSURE - WED MAY 27 -  STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE @ 5 & 7THU MAY 28 -  STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE @ 4:30 & PRIVATE PARTY @ 7FRI MAY 29 - PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45SAT MAY 30 - PRESSURE @ 1:45 & 3:50, HS JAZZ OPEN MIC @ 6:30/7SUN MAY 31 - Open House with TARRA SIMMONS @ NOON, PRESSURE @ 2:10, 4:2O & 6:45MON JUNE 1: PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45TUE JUNE 2 : PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45WED JUNE 3: PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45THU JUNE 4: PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45FRI JUNE 5: PRESSURE @ 4:35 & 6:45FRI JUNE 11: DISCLOSURE DAY*STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE. The thirty year story of video journalist Amy Goodman asking important questions of politicians, generals, rebels, the resistance and leaders of the industrial, military complex. Even a gaggle of other radio/TV personalities. Sitting at 83% at IMDB. Should you be interested in how we get out of our current nightmare, this is a prerequisite to understand how we got in. Amy provides the backstory. While the entire doc is intense, the final ten minutes are brutal in making the case for the importance of independent, alternative, non-state controlled media, or what is better labeled propaganda. I wonder what the Island’s number of households watching Faux News is these days. My non-Neilson guess is 18%. Sadly. PRESSURE: From David Haig’s 2014 stage play of the same name, starring Andrew Scott as Capt James Stagg and AA winner Brendan Fraser as IKE in the, roughly, 72 chaotically intense hours leading up to D-Day. Co-starring Kerry Condon and Damain Lewis. Should you be a fan on big-screen historical reenactments circa 1940-1945, as I am, this one follows the ticking bomb pattern to the bloody beach at Normandy. Even short of DUNKIRK, PRVT RYAN or THE LONGEST DAY, this one looks to be in their lofty cinematic standing . Not for the small screen (or faint of heart). *DISCLOSURE DAY: Mr Spielberg’s return to his genre roots ala CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, AI, MINORITY REPORT and perhaps, ET and even POLTERGEIST, DISCLOSURE DAY asks a the double-blind question about alien life forms currently living among us; How would we know? NOTE* - The Oscar winning sound editor/designer and Islander Gary Rydstrom has agreed to welcome DD at our pending sneak preview on Thursday, June 11 with an intro and post screening Q&A. I have yet to receive official confirmation from the studio as yet, but I am hopeful that they will see the logic in this and give the green light. Please stay tuned. I will also post the complete schedule with show times upon getting the good-to-go sign. SAT MAY 30 - HS JAZZ BAND OPEN MIC. The talented kids from BIHS invite you and your jazzy chops up to the stage to join them in their Spring open mic event. You will not be disappointed. Doors at 6, showtime is 7-9. SUN MAY 31 - Open House with TARRA SIMMONS. 1:30. Free (as in all functioning democracies). This is also a Rally/Fundraiser, so bring your Democracy support funds. Had the chance to sir down and chat with local filmmakers MARK AND EMMA CAMERON earlier this week. We are planning on a run of their 2025 film DETENTION filmed entirely on BI, in the near future. Listen to our conversation here. I have invited JEFF BREIN, big Cheese QB at FarAway Entertainment for an official update podcast this week, pending his hectic schedule, so please check these pages for that. We have lot’s to discuss, including our transition to 501 (c)(3) category and the formulation of the inaugural HLT Board of Directors, three of which I invited yesterday. For the record (box score) I went 2 for 3. The one was a ‘let me think about that’, the baseball equivalent of popping out with the bases loaded. All for today folks, thanks as always for your help and support, the 2026 HLT 90th Anniversary Free Movie ballots are ready for your review and voting participation at the theatre. Of the 90 films awarded Best Picture since July 3, 1936 (our official DOB) you get to select (vote for) three. Those receiving the most votes we will screen at no charge on July 25 & 26 in celebration thereof. I will also post them here and on our web site in case you can’t make it here due to traffic on Miller, Fletcher Bay or Lynwood Ctr roads. There you have it. Ciao,KevinVisit us on Facebook and leave a comment!!

    HLT#167 - MARK & EMMA CAMERON

My guests today are both illustrious and local, the perfect one-two for our mission statement in celebration of those that provide the content with which we support. Filmmakers receive especially accommodating consideration towards this celebration and today Mark and Emma Cameron will tell their first-person story about the making of DETENTION, shot and produced right here on our home in the South Salish Sea. From the John Hughes, ahem, school of teen-age coming of age trope DETENTION pays weekend homage to the wonderful stories that made THE BREAKFAST CLUB, 16 CANDLES, WEIRD SCIENCE, FERRIS BUELLER, UNCLE BUCK, PRETTY IN PINK and HOME ALONE mandatory, and fulfilling, viewing since 1984. I would be hard pressed to find examples of a boxed set of films that have aged any better. To this day they all nail the comedy format to perfection. And Comedy, as is said, ain’t easy. It was Emma's initial vision to bring the timeless theme into a modern setting with contemporary dialogue, music and obstacles for the cast to overcome. Life issues change with the times, allowing the 40 years since the release of BREAKFAST CLUB, ample opportunity for new scenes and a fresh take. The triumphant result of all that water under the bridge, is DETENTION. Mark, a grad of the acclaimed Loyola-Marymount (Westchester, CA) Dept of Film, is a writer, director and cinematographer, and Emma, who came to LA from the UK to study ballet, is writer, actor and a whirlwind of creative energy self-tasked with the colossal chore of making the thousand and one pieces of future-length movie making fit together - on time and under budget, and of course, tickling the funny bone. I am so happy we had this chance to exchange a few tales of the road on their journey to Bainbridge and the subsequent production of their film. As it remains the central point of distribution negotiations after collecting five offers out of the Pasadena Film Festival revolving gate, we’ll have to wait for the contractual ink to dry before we agree to a screening date at both Island locations. BUT, I am working on getting the trailer allowing the start of the promotional process, so please stay tune to this channel for updates on this exciting project. For additional details on DETENTION and a most favorable review, start here.Visit us on Facebook and leave a comment!!

No time like the present ship-mates, only two days left to gawk at this pair of larger than life bunker-busters. As much local historical trivia as they both command, I continue to feel that the original, now in its 40th year since release, is the better film. Sure, MAV sparkles in 4K Scope with ultra pixilation. The attack scenes, partially filmed in the Cascades near Lake Kachess and Hibox Mtn, the F-18s and AE-18G Growlers from NAS Whidbey are core props for the mission, but it’s story stretches our suspension of belief to unforgivable dimensions. Great fun, yes, believable? Barely passable. Like Mach 10.2 for instance. STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE. The thirty year story of video journalist Amy Goodman asking important questions of politicians, generals, rebels, the resistance and leaders of the industrial, military complex. Doors open at 6:45, please get here early if you’re serious about getting a seat for one of the best comedies ever filmed. I so miss Robin Williams. SAT MAY 30 - HS JAZZ BAND OPEN MIC. We are ‘negotiating’ with two studios over what to open on May 29. As we speak, it is a coin toss between (heads) DISCLOSURE DAY and (tails) PRESSURE. We are ramping up for the big summer celebration of our 90th anniversary. As you all know the official date is July 3, but we have selected July 25 & 26 for the two days of free films as selected by your vote of the Academy Award best picture winners since 1936** (name a few). You pick ‘em - we screen ‘em. I will have the ballots printed and ready on Thursday. Lastly today, hopefully you have seen the podcast episode with TARRA SIMMONS we recorded Thursday, Local filmmakers EMMA and MARK CAMERON and FAE PREZ (and my boss) JEFF BREIN are both scheduled to visit us this week with exciting updates to discuss. Enjoy the ride my friends and please stay tuned. Stuff is goin on. Got questions? 206.451.4336 private and your pick of electronic public media. Grazie. HLT# 166 - TARRA SIMMONS

I grabbed this bio from Tarra's site, because it sums up the incredible path she has traveled to get here. We are honored to host her rally at the Historic Lynwood on Sunday, May 31 @ noon. Please join us. Overcoming obstacles is a persistent theme in Tarra Simmons’ life. Raised in Bremerton, Tarra had a difficult upbringing. Surrounded by trauma and violence at home, she dropped out of middle school at the age of 13 and was pregnant by 14. Despite giving birth to a son when she was 15 years old, Tarra managed to find her way back to school and became the first person in her family to graduate from high school. By 21 she had graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in nursing and embarked on a career as a registered nurse. However – as is often the case for people with adverse childhood experiences – Tarra suffered with behavioral health issues including substance use disorder. Rock bottom came in 2011 when she was sentenced to 30 months in prison.Upon leaving prison, Tarra found herself facing the challenges of re-entering society after incarceration. Despite her nursing degree, she was only able to find a job at Burger King. With her wages still being garnished to pay for court fees, she faced economic insecurity, housing instability, and a lack of employment options, all while trying to rebuild her relationship with her children. Despite these challenges, Tarra continued on her path to recovery and applied to law school so that she could impact change at a higher level. Having experienced the lows of opioid use disorder and been through a justice system that does everything it can to hold people down, she knew that the changes that she needed to make were systemic. After graduating from Seattle University with honors she received the prestigious Skadden fellowship, which supports talented lawyers in pursuing public interest law. Tarra focused her efforts on providing legal counsel to formerly incarcerated people so they could end their involvement with the criminal justice system. However, when the Washington State Bar refused to admit her because of her past, Tarra took a stand for everyone who has been incarcerated. She challenged the Bar all the way to the State Supreme Court, where she won a unanimous, same-day decision.Former Gov. Jay Inslee appointed her to the Washington State Reentry Council where she served as co-chair for four years, as well as the Public Defense Advisory Board. She also serves as an advisory board member to the Washington Supreme Court Gender and Justice Commission and is on the board of the Economic Opportunity Institute.Tarra will fight for everyone in our community, because she knows that each and every one of us has immense potential. Having survived poverty, violence, trauma, substance use disorder and incarceration, Tarra knows that sometimes all it takes is a helping hand and a second chance for someone to flourish. She also knows all too well the pitfalls of a criminal justice system that merely punishes people instead of working to uplift and support them. Tarra will fight, as so many people in her community did for her, to build fairer and more equitable criminal justice and education systems. She understands how the law impacts low-income people on a daily basis because she has lived it. As a member of the Community Safety, Rules, Technology, Economic Development, & Veterans, and Healthcare & Wellness committees, Tarra brings that lived experience to Olympia where she fights to reduce incarceration, increase access to behavioral and mental health, and ease re-entry of formerly incarcerated people back into society.Tarra lives in Bremerton with her dog, Hope.Visit us on Facebook and leave a comment!!

I apologize. I really do. Please notice the FREE screening of THE BIRDCAGE Friday night. May 25 @ 7. It is such an exemplary work of cinematic genius and 100% hysterical, that I couldn’t resist the opportunity to share. THE GARDENER. Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and I trust lot’s of youse came out to share this wonderful story of rejuvenation and salvation, spiritual, artistic and social, with that special someone. The arc moves from the frenetic business world to the serene natural flow of creative release as our protagonist steps from darkness to light. Yes, a tried and true trope, somewhat Hallmarked, quasi cliched and predictable, but a profound one, nevertheless, done up through the sensitive lens of hope and a better tomorrow. TOP GUN (BOTH): Go ahead and include these two in the Summer Blockbuster category.  Entertainment like this is to be enjoyed, so suspend your analytics for an afternoon or evening of Mach 5 fun. STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE. Amy Goodman’s work is a gripping portrait of a trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. Yes, it’s a guilty pleasure, the pairing of politics and art, but, I believe, a necessary one. Bellingham’s DANA LYONS will sing, strum and seduce with his musical take on current events. Satire has never been sharper! Tickets here. TARRA SIMMONS will host a Town Hall Fund Raising event, that’s right, a grass-roots funding by you and me, you know, we the people. 1:30 and free. Thanks to all for a hilarious evening of comedy Sat night with the GATEWAY COMEDY review.
