The History of the Barbarians's Podcast

A series of events leads to the Huns deciding to make a full hearted effort to invade the Western Roman Empire. The famous Hunnic leaders Bleda and Attila come to power. Only one will make it to the invasion of the Western Empire. These events will lead our Visigoths into difficult decisions. 

The Visigoths have a new leader, Theoderid or Theoderic I. Vandals, Bretons, and of course Romans' actions will have an impact on our barbarians and their new kingdom in Toulouse. 

Athualf is dead but a new king will lead the Visigoths to a place they have never been before...their own kingdom. The Goths establish a kingdom within the boundaries of the Roman Empire based in Toulouse.

The Visigoths look to a new leader after the death of Alaric. Rome, as always, will play a large role in the new strategy developed by our Barbarians to try to find lasting peace and security.

The Visigoths must develop a new long term plan after the Sack of Rome. Those plans will be folied by bad weather and the death of Alaric.

The Visigoths continue their quest for a place in Roman military and society. This time they use the Eternal City of Rome as their primary negotiating piece with the Emperor. Eventually the strategy will fall apart which will lead to the famous Visigothic Sack of Rome in 410 C.E.

History of the Barbarians podcast is back! Stilicho and his Romans face multiple threats which include Goths. Alaric and his Visigoths will end up invading and laying siege to Rome.

A new group of Goths invade Italy providing more problems for Stilicho and the Romans. The Reik Radagaisus and his Gothic contingent will meet their demise in the crucial year of 406. The events of this year will spur the eventual sack of Rome in 410 under Alaric. 

Alaric and the Visigoths take advantage of a distracted Stilicho and Western Empire to invade Italy. The Goths will meet the Romans in battle and force the Romans to move their capital city to Ravenna. 

We follow Alaric's rise to King of the Visigoths, his 2nd rebellion against Rome, his 2nd and 3rd escape from death at the hands of Rome, and their subsequent treaty. We also take a look at the actions of a couple of interesting Barbarians involved in our timeline named Gainas, Eudoxia, Frivatta and Tribigild.

The Goths suffer through a series of traumatic events, from the Battle of Frigidus to the first plundering expedition of the Huns in the winter of 394-395 C.E. These will culminate in the birth of the people we call the Visigoths. 

The Goths settle into their new role as foederati within Rome. We get an update on Goths throughout the empire and introduce two famous barbarians. 

The later half of the Gothic War 379-382 C.E. includes new emperors, intrigue, political posturing, military stalemate, and a whole lot of plundering and looting by the Goths. 

The aftermath of the Battle of Adrianople. Included in this week's episode are the movements of both the Gothic and Romans after the death of Valens.

Fritigern and his Goths meet the Emperor of Rome in a battle that will be remembered by history. 

A look at the last decisions that push the Goths and the Romans into the epic Battle of Adrianople in 378 C.E.

We look at the make up of the Gothic and Roman armies prior to the Battle of Adrianople.  

A look at the final maneuverings and key players of the lead up to the Battle of Adrianople. Included is Fritigern's rebellion, Rome's emperors Gratien and Valens, and Greuthungi leaders Aletheus and Saphrax.

The Goths have finally reached their goal of entering into the Roman Empire seeking safety from the Huns and the chaos of the Pontic Steppe. The Romans show the asylum seekers some questionable hospitality. 

The world of the Goths is turned upside down by the invading Huns in 375 C.E. 

The Goths back a usurper to the Roman throne and the Roman Emperor does not appreciate the effort. 

Ulfilas' achievements including the conversion of a Tervingi Goth minority leads to conflict at home and exile in the Roman Empire for many in the 4th century.

A look into what the Tervini were doing during the peace of the mid 4th century. We also look at how a Goth would dress, trade and operate economically.

We take a look at the Goth's interactions with the military might of Constantine the Great from the early 320's to 332 CE. 

The Goths will consolidate power and grow in strength in the areas north of the Danube and the Black Sea. It is during this time that they will settle into two major groups named Tervingi (western Goths) and Greuthungi (eastern Goths). This episode will look into the power and social structures of the Goths in the early 300s C.E.
