Episode 172: Why ‘Healthy’ Woman Are Struggling with Their Periods

In this episode of The JCN Clinic Podcast, Clinical Nutritionist Tammy Shemesh joins Jessica for a powerful conversation on why so many “healthy” women are still struggling with their periods. Tammy shares her journey into nutrition and what led her to specialise in women’s health, before we dive into what true menstrual health actually looks like from a clinical perspective. Tammy also shares why so many women have come to accept symptoms like PMS, irregular cycles, and painful periods as “normal.” We explore the key drivers behind menstrual imbalances we’re seeing more than ever in clinic, including under-fuelling, chronic stress, gut health dysfunction, and the impact of modern lifestyle habits on hormonal health. We also unpack the rise of “hormone hacks” on social media - what they get right, where they fall short, and why a foundational, individualised approach is key when it comes to restoring your cycle. Tammy shares how she approaches menstrual health through clinical nutrition, focusing on sustainable, long-term strategies that support the body to heal rather than quick fixes or symptom suppression. If you’ve ever felt confused about your cycle, dismissed in your symptoms, or like you’re doing “everything right” but still not seeing results, this episode will leave you feeling informed, validated, and empowered with a clearer path forward. ========================== Show Notes: Get your copy of e.a.t cookbook here - jhttps://jessicacox.com.au/product/easy-meals-food-plan/ =================================== The JCN Clinic Podcast is a place where Jessica and Carissa get real about nutrition and living a healthy life. Episode 171: Chronic Reflux Explained: Causes, Testing & Real Solutions

Chronic reflux is one of the most common digestive complaints we see at The JCN Clinic, yet many people are stuck managing symptoms rather than understanding why it’s happening in the first place. In this episode of The JCN Clinic Podcast, Clinical Nutritionists Jessica Cox and Christine Smith unpack chronic reflux, including the terms you may have heard such as GERD or GORD, and why reflux isn’t always simply a case of “too much stomach acid”. We discuss the conventional medical approach to reflux and why medications like antacids and acid suppressants are often prescribed, but may not always address the underlying cause. From a functional and clinical nutrition perspective, we also explore some of the most common drivers of reflux we see in practice, including gut dysbiosis, SIBO, food intolerances, and issues with stomach acid production. Jessica and Christine also walk through the types of testing and treatment approaches that can help uncover what’s really going on, alongside real-life case examples from clinic that illustrate how identifying the root cause can lead to long-term improvements. If you’ve been dealing with ongoing reflux, or supporting someone who is, this episode will give you a deeper understanding of what might be happening beneath the surface and the steps that can help move beyond simply managing symptoms. =========== =============== Show Notes: Get your copy of e.a.t cookbook here - jhttps://jessicacox.com.au/product/easy-meals-food-plan/ =================================== The JCN Clinic Podcast is a place where Jessica and Carissa get real about nutrition and living a healthy life. Episode 170: It’s NOT Parasites That’s Causing Your Gut Issues

Are parasites really to blame for your bloating, irregular bowel habits or persistent gut discomfort? Or are we jumping to conclusions? In this episode of The JCN Clinic Podcast Show, Jessica and Christine unpack one of the most common assumptions they see in clinic - that parasites must be the root cause of ongoing gut symptoms. Spoiler: in most cases, they’re not. Instead, they break down the far more common (and often overlooked) drivers of digestive issues and why jumping straight into a parasite cleanse can be unnecessary, expensive and even harmful. In this episode, they discuss: - Why parasites are often over-blamed in the wellness space - The much more common causes of bloating, gas, abdominal pain and irregular stools - How social media has fuelled fear-based parasite narratives - The risks and downsides of self-prescribed parasite cleanses - Why proper testing and clinical reasoning matter - Practical, evidence-informed recommendations for common gut complaints - How to take a more grounded, strategic approach to improving gut health If you’ve ever wondered whether parasites are really the culprit or you’ve been tempted by a cleanse this episode will help you step back and look at your symptoms through a more balanced clinical lens. 🎧 Listen now to gain clarity on what’s really driving your gut issues and what to focus on instead. Bonus Episode: When the Finish Line Isn’t the Ending: My Kosciuszko 100 DNF

In this bonus episode, Jessica finally sits down with her husband, Dameon (or known to many as Hubbard), to unpack her DNF at the Kosciuszko 100 in November 2025. Jessica and Dameon walk through the full journey: the lead-up to race day, the setbacks along the way, the injury that complicated everything, and the turbulent decisions with making it to the start line. Jessica shares what it was like running with an injury, the moment she knew that finishing the race was slipping away, and the emotional weight of making the call to DNF. Jessica also reflects on why she thinks the injury happened, while acknowledging that sometimes you can never fully know. She shares her personal learnings this race left her with, opening up about her stress, sleep and nutrition in the lead up to the race. Jessica also shares how she is now approaching recovery, future goals and expectations, and essentially what this DNF as taught her. ======================================================= The JCN Clinic Podcast is a place where Jessica and Carissa get real about nutrition and living a healthy life. Episode 169: Why Popping Probiotics Might Be Doing you More Harm Than Good

Probiotics are often marketed as a universal solution for gut health, but what if they’re not always helping, and in some cases, making things worse? In this episode of The JCN Clinic Podcast, we unpack why popping probiotics without proper guidance may be doing more harm than good. We explore the reality that not all probiotics are created equal, with different strains exerting very different mechanisms of action. We discuss how probiotics may aggravate existing dysbiosis, why caution is needed for certain gut conditions such as SIBO (particularly products containing prebiotics), and what the research really shows, highlighting the mixed and often condition-specific outcomes seen in studies. You’ll also learn how probiotics can sometimes mask underlying gut dysfunction rather than address the root cause, and the potential risks of long-term or inappropriate use. Most importantly, we shift the focus to what to do instead: how to take a more strategic, personalised, and evidence-informed approach to gut health that supports true healing rather than symptom suppression. If you’ve ever wondered whether probiotics are right for you or why they haven’t delivered the results you expected this episode is a must-listen. ============================================== Get your copy of e.a.t cookbook using the unique discount code here - https://jessicacox.com.au/product/e-a-t-cookbook-by-jessica-cox/ ======================================================= The JCN Clinic Podcast is a place where Jessica and Carissa get real about nutrition and living a healthy life. In this episode of The JCN Clinic Podcast, Jessica and Roshelle dive into what to do next when you still don’t have answers. They unpack the common patterns they see in clients who’ve tried everything but still feel unwell and explain how a thorough review of your health history, diet, and lifestyle can reveal hidden triggers your GP may have overlooked. Jessica and Roshelle also discuss the role of functional testing with respect to Microba functional stool testing and how as clinical nutritionists they use this advanced technology to assess microbiome imbalances that standard testing often misses. =========== =============== Show Notes: Get your copy of Easy Meals Food Plan here - jhttps://jessicacox.com.au/product/easy-meals-food-plan/ Find out more about our Gut Health Nutrition Package with Roshelle here https://jessicacox.com.au/theclinic/gut-health-nutritionist/ =================================== The JCN Clinic Podcast is a place where Jessica and Carissa get real about nutrition and living a healthy life. Episode 165: Why You’re Not Absorbing Iron (ft. Rebecca Edwards from Activated Probiotics)

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient issues we see at The JCN Clinic, but what if the real problem isn’t your intake, but your absorption? In this episode, Jessica sits down with Rebecca, Director of Education at Activated Probiotics, to explore why maintaining healthy iron levels depends so deeply on gut health. Rebecca covers: • Why iron insufficiency is often driven by gut dysfunction rather than diet alone • The fascinating connection between iron and immune function • How the physiology of iron absorption relies on a balanced digestive environment • The emerging research on the role of the microbiome in iron metabolism • And how specific probiotic strains are being studied for their potential to support iron uptake With over twenty years of experience in complementary and integrative health, Rebecca is a qualified naturopath, educator, and passionate science communicator. She’s lectured to students and practitioners across Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US, sharing the latest research in microbiome science and its impact on human health.
