Martha Clokie, PhD, is focused on finding and developing bacteriophages that kill pathogens to make new antimicrobials. As a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Leicester, Dr. Clokie is focused on finding and developing bacteriophages that kill pathogens to make new antimicrobials. She is currently developing an alternative, phage-based treatment for Lyme disease and Clostridium difficile, a bacteria that can infect the bowel and cause diarrhea. Dr. Clokie is also studying how phages affect bacteria in the gut and how phages can be used to treat Salmonella in animals. She is also the editor in chief of the Mary Anne Liebert journal Phage.In this episode, Dr. Clokie chews over what makes a phage a good candidate for a therapeutic, how genomics has changed the phage research landscape, and what challenges remain or stand in the way of making phage therapy accessible and routine.
