The Lonely Goat Cafe

I have always been fascinated with what constitutes as a “home.” It could be the house we grew up in, a favorite holiday meal, or even a piece of music. For me, it was my maternal grandmother’s room as I was growing up. This was before my family moved and kept moving from one city to another. I started "The Lonely Goat Cafe" because of my experience of trying to create a home in different cities all over the world. It has been a challenging and, sometimes, rewarding journey, but often a lonely one. In this podcast, I explore the idea of home: what this word means, our often solitary search for it and how people use music, art, films, dance and literature to explore its meaning.

    The sea, the sea!

This time my guest was poet and activist Dian Sousa. We talked about creativity and the necessity of work, her immigrant parents and her love and respect for the sea, as well as our mystical connections to our ancestors. Then, we read some poetry.

    The trauma of migration

My first guest was MT Vallarta, poet and Professor of Ethnic Studies at Cal Poly. They spoke about why they write poetry, their early years growing up in the Philippines, and the trauma of migration.
