Ep. 102: It wasn’t your fault but…
There are times when we make a mistake, and then there are times when we or our patients are just unlucky. If the consequences of that bad luck are negative, for example, if you did a procedure and there was a complication, then it’s NORMAL that we have a reaction to it.If you have a great fear of anything going wrong, or you’re in the midst of one of those situations, then listen to this episode for a way to get through it with the least amount of anxiety and beating yourself over the head for no reason.Take the Quiz! Ep. 101: Get your facts straight: stop letting stories run your life as a vet
Isn’t it funny how we’re so suspicious around scientific studies, and don’t just accept any pseudoscience crap anyone presents to us, but THEN, when it’s stories coming from our OWN brain, we just run with it?!“I failed to examine it properly the first time”“The owners would rather have someone else look at their pet”“I’m too slow at this (bitch spey/dental/consults)”In this episode 101 (!) of The Overwhelmed Vet Podcast I give you a structure to know if you’re just bs’ing yourself in the worst way, with tons of examples (and a few mistakes I made last week, so you can see you’re not alone). Ep. 99: The Path to enjoy being a veterinary surgeon
We made it to 99! Let’s break down the three steps any vet needs to take to go from surviving to actually thriving — starting with two mindset shifts that sound simple but will genuinely change everything. And then I get into the structure: the two big areas you need to work on, and why most of us are doing it completely backwards. Here's a little teaser: one of the steps is realising that you are not that special and I say that with full love 💛If you've ever felt overwhelmed by where to even start — this one's for you.Hey! Ep. 98: Taking over someone else's sh*itshow
You've just taken over a case. And what you're looking at… is a mess. Another vet's mess.Maybe it's steroids and NSAIDs prescribed at the same time. Maybe it's antibiotics thrown at a dog with diarrhea just because. And the owners are convinced their vet is God, while you're standing there thinking — how on earth do I work with THIS?In this episode I talk about what to do when you inherit a badly handled case — because there are two things you need to manage at once. How do you talk to the owners WITHOUT throwing the other vet under the bus, while still doing right by the animal? And how do you handle that frustration and powerlessness you're feeling inside?Because here's the thing — you don't know the full story. You weren't in that consult room. You don't know what pressure the other vet was under, and you don't even know if what the owner is telling you is the truth, because stressed and upset people don’t tend to remember accurately. I also share the exact phrases I use to change a treatment plan diplomatically, and how to keep your focus on the one question that actually matters: what is best for this pet, right now, with what I've got?Hey! Hey! If you feel like quitting vet med, you might want to take a break first!BUT - there are a few things about taking a break you need to know first, things I’ve learned from vets on a break, vets that have been on several breaks and come back, and also my own, 1 year long break. Ep. 96: But it shouldn’t happen like this
Last week I had a case with a young cat that really upset me, because it wasn’t fair. How do we deal with the things that shouldn’t be happening, but do anyway? And when we get triggered like this, it can be hard to make sure we’re making the right decision, in the moment. In this episode I explain the ONE THING that will make it easier for you to overcome any adversity - and as usual, it starts within you.Hey! Ep. 95: But is it happening RIGHT now?
There's always so much going on. Maybe you've got a complaint running and you can't stop thinking about what caused it and what the consequences are going to be.Maybe someone in your family is or was sick, or you've got something else personal going on. Or there's a problem with your rota, or you've got a surgery coming up you don't feel confident about and it worries you no end, or you're not sure about your last case, or a problem with your co-worker…There's ALWAYS going to be something. But in this episode I want to show you that it's not really happening NOW, in this instant, and you have the power and control over whether you want to let it sap the energy out of you or learn to just deal with what's actually in front of you.Link for our July Retreat: https://mailchi.mp/33bc0ff4af33/rechargereframeretreat2Link to my Happy in Vet Med program: https://gunilalifecoach.com/happyvetHey! Ep. 94: The REAL reason you’re exhausted from making decisions all day
When you come home from a day of making decisions, it can feel like your brain is fried, and you can sometimes really struggle even just deciding what to have for dinner, right? It makes sense, if you’ve had a lot of cases, but the REAL reason we feel worn out lies deeper than that.I was talking to a vet about this, and I realise I actually very rarely feel like this now, and pondering on it I found out why! Ep 93: Does mental health support have to be specifically for veterinarians?
Some of the most frequent online searches around veterinary mental health are “What online platforms offer mental health support specifically for veterinarians?”, or “Therapy services specifically for veterinary surgeons”, and I want to help you find what is best for you, specifically, right now, as a vet.In this episode I also reiterate the importance of you knowing what’s best for YOU and what you need, as opposed to feeling obligated to do things a certain way. When you think something often enough, you end up believing it.Beliefs I hear often are: “I am not good with people”, “I am not experienced at xyz”, “It’s not working”, “I don’t know where to start”.These beliefs are all LIMITING you from being a motivated, confident and joyful vet, and you want to be aware of them so you can challenge them.Listen to this week's episode so you can find out how to spot them, and my method to overcome them. The world can be a scary place sometimes, and the veterinary profession is not exempt. Most of the time, however, our fear isn’t really based on something actually happening, right now, but more around the IDEA of it.Whether it’s Trump trying his seemingly best to start a (few) world war(s), or you’re about to do a bitch spey on a fat labrador, it can feel scary and out of control. In this episode I want you to learn how to create safety in your own body, so you don’t have to live constantly scared and anxious - because apart from the health consequences of having adrenaline and cortisol playing catch in your body 24/7, it’s just not much FUN.Hey! Ep. 81: 6 very important points: “should” you?
After this week of nights and coaching I’ve realised there are 6 very important points you need to know if you work in vet med, most around the word “Should”.Here’s the list of all 6, that I encourage you to have behind your ear/on your phone. I elaborate on them in this episode but remember this check list:1: “I should know this” No you SHOULDN’T. Don’t make it mean anything about you.2: “I should be able to resolve this on my own”. No. Be willing to be vulnerable, and show your weakness.3: “I shouldn’t feel like this”. Yes you should. Vet med gives us a WHOLE range of emotions, none of them are inherently bad unless YOU think so.4: “There should be THE right decision and I don’t know which one. And I should know”. There is no THE. 5: Trust your gut. Not the text book. Most pets haven’t read the text books.6: “It went wrong” Did it? Remember to evaluate PROPERLY.Go check out the course! Right here Hey! Ep. 78: How to start again in veterinary practice (and live to tell the tale)
Going back to vet med after a break, or moving to a new clinic, can be scary and overwhelming. This is especially true if you have been burnt out before, and have a history of not being able to set boundaries. The fears around being sucked into an unhealthy work routine (again!) are real.I’ve coached a lot of vets recently with these issues, and I want to share the tips and tools I found useful for them.I created a manual to be the pillar upon which you can lean to support yourself in this time of change, and this episode sums up everything I teach. Ep. 73: Experience - but with intention
“I’m not experienced enough".This is such a vague statement, because - enough for what? When ARE you experienced enough? How many procedures do you need to do to be experienced “enough”? Why?When I coach vets I so often see them being thrown around by random thoughts, and they react without any INTENTION behind their actions. It’s like saying “I should really lose some weight”. Ok, why exactly? How much? What are 3 things you can start doing right now? Or “I need more money”VAGUE statements will give you VAGUE results, and an unsatisfying life. This episode gives you a lot of examples of where we trip ourselves up and stay stuck because we lack intention behind our actions, and also burn ourselves out because of vague statements like “I need to study more”.Hey! Ep. 59: Coming back from “I’ve messed up my whole life”. Interview with Sarah Garven, Scottish veterinarian and personal/career coach.
Sarah burnt out in 2004 and left vet med after having tried several modalities of veterinary practice. Since being a new grad she never felt she got a handle on it, and deeply believed she had to be right all the time in order to be a “good vet”. Like many of us (most?!?), she just didn’t feel she knew what she was doing most of the time, and it took its toll. After a 12 year break she realised she wanted to get back to being a veterinarian, and despite a lot of fear and self doubt she did so, with great success. So successful in fact, that she not only fully enjoys working as a GP, but also started coaching others that feel stagnant in their life and career. Join our conversation where you’ll learn why messing up your life might not be the worst thing, that your degree is never wasted, and that you can ALWAYS take a break from vet med and come back stronger than ever. Why is it that so many owners have a bad experience at the vet around the passing of their pets, and end up putting in a complaint or sharing their frustration on the internet? You may think owners get mad because we were not good enough to save their pets.Think again.Owners get hurt and frustrated when we fail to lead them through the hardest part of the journey with their pets. And it’s our responsibility to be able to do this.Luckily, you’ve got help in this episode!Koryn is a Certified Pet Loss Bereavement Specialist and the founder of The Parted Paw, a professional pet loss and bereavement service. In this conversation we discuss both sides of the coin: Vet vs Owner, and talk about how we can best support the owners so they DON’T end up having a horrible experience at our clinic.Listen in and think about where you might be doing some of these things, and what you would like to change. It’s not just about “being nice” to the pet owners. Should I even stay in vet med?The reason it's so hard to make a decision is because deep down we're afraid of change. We're also afraid of regretting our decision, in case we didn't make "the right one”In this episode I take you through the process that will clear things up for you, and enable you to make the best decision for you right now.Bonus: You can apply this process to ANYTHING, also relationships.Check out this years retreats: Denmark in June: https://retreatforfemalevetsdk2025.my.canva.site/Spain in September: https://retreatforfemalevetsdk2025.my.canva.site/retreat-vets-spain-septSuggest a topic or ask a question for me to answer on the show!https://forms.gle/Lp1HVS19WC44Sdvm8Hey! She very generously shares her story so we can learn from it, and inspire us to practice more self awareness, self compassion, and seek help in time.Listen to this episode to learn about the signs that you might be dangerously near a cliff, and how to pull yourself back in time. It might just save your life.https://helpline.vetlife.org.uk/ is the organisation Ceri refers to. You can email and/or phone them anytime.Hey! Thanks for listening!
