Gregor MacGregor & the Poyais Scheme .(April Fools series )
He called himself a prince. He created a flag, a constitution, a currency. He published a 355-page guidebook to a capital city with an opera house and a cathedral. And none of it existed. In the finale of our April Fools series, we tell the story of Gregor MacGregor — the Scottish soldier who invented an entire nation called Poyais, convinced hundreds to invest their life savings, and sent 250 settlers to die in an empty jungle. Nearly 180 people never came home. And MacGregor? He was never convicted. He died a general, buried with full military honors in a cathedral in Caracas. The deadliest con in modern history. Ann O'Delia Diss Debar -The Spook Priestess (APRIL FOOLS SERIES)
She called herself a Princess of Bavaria. The newspapers called her "The Empress of Swindle." In 1888, Ann O'Delia Diss Debar convinced one of New York's most powerful attorneys that she could summon oil paintings from thin air—works created by Raphael and Rembrandt from beyond the grave. She took his fortune, his mansion, and his sanity. But that was just the beginning. From the Gilded Age parlors of Madison Avenue to the courtrooms of London's Old Bailey, the Spook Priestess left a trail of broken lives, impossible escapes, and crimes so dark the courtroom had to be cleared. And when the final curtain fell? She simply... vanished. Stay Curious. Stay Strange. ANNA DELVEY: THE CON ARTIST WHO INVENTED AN HEIRESS (APRIL FOOLS SERIES)
She had no money. No trust fund. No Swiss bank account. What Anna Delvey had was a fake name, a designer wardrobe, and the nerve to walk into New York's most exclusive rooms and act like she owned them. For four years, she fooled banks, hotels, and Manhattan's social elite — using Microsoft Word and an AOL email address. In this episode, Josh walks us through the full story: from a working-class suburb of Moscow to a $135 million Park Avenue building, from Rikers Island to Dancing with the Stars. Lee breaks down the Netflix empire built on the con. And Josh asks the uncomfortable question: did she exploit a flaw in the system — or did she exploit the system as designed? TESLA: Part 2 - WHAT THEY TOOK — March Madmen Madness Series Finale
The man who invented the modern world died alone in a New York hotel room. By the next morning, federal agents had seized everything. 80 trunks of research. A legendary safe deposit box. Decades of documents. All of it taken by the Office of Alien Property — despite Tesla being an American citizen for over 50 years. The man who evaluated his papers? Dr. John G. Trump — Donald Trump's uncle. His verdict: nothing of value. But only 60 trunks made it to the Tesla Museum in Belgrade. Twenty remain unaccounted for. Some files are still classified. The Edison Medal — vanished. In this series finale, we cover Tesla's final years, his offers of a "death ray" to multiple governments (including $25,000 from the Soviets), the bizarre Tunguska theory, and the uncomfortable questions that remain unanswered 80 years later. What was actually in those trunks? What is still being protected? Come Curious. Stay Strange. TESLA: Part 1 -THE RECEIVER — March Madmen Madness Series Finale
Nikola Tesla invented the modern world — but the textbooks leave out the mystic. At three years old, he stroked a cat and watched blue fire erupt from its fur. By adulthood, he could design complete machines entirely in his mind, run them for weeks, check for wear — then build them once, perfectly. "My brain is only a receiver," he said. A receiver of what? In the finale of March Madman Madness, we trace Tesla from a lightning-struck birth in Croatia to the War of Currents, from Edison's betrayal to the night he sat alone in Colorado Springs and heard something counting back at him from the stars. JOHN DEE — PART 2: "THE MAN WHO TAUGHT THE ANGELS TO LIE" ( MARCH MADMAN MADNESS)
John Dee built the greatest library in England. He advised the most powerful queen in Europe. He coined the phrase "British Empire." Then Edward Kelley knocked on his door. In Part 2, the angels go quiet, the library gets looted, and a covenant signed in Třeboň changes everything. What happened in that room in 1587 — and what it cost Dee to believe. JOHN DEE: THE QUEEN'S CONJURER — Part 1 March Madman Madness
In 2016, researchers X-rayed a famous painting of Dr. John Dee standing before Queen Elizabeth I. Underneath the surface — painted over, deliberately hidden — he was standing in a circle of human skulls. Someone decided that was too honest. John Dee built the largest private library in Elizabethan England. He coined the phrase "British Empire." He picked the date of Elizabeth's coronation — and she reigned for forty-four years after it. He may have served as her spy, embedded in the same intelligence network that cracked the Babington Plot and sent Mary Queen of Scots to the block. By any measure, he was the most important intellectual in England. And none of it was enough. Part 1: From Cambridge to the Queen's court — a mind that mastered mathematics, navigation, and espionage, but couldn't stop chasing the one question no library could answer. Part 2 drops Friday: A convicted forger with no ears knocks on his door. In under forty-five minutes, everything changes. ss building holding two metal cans connected to a machine, telling a stranger their deepest secrets. Everything they say is being written down. And kept. They don't know that yet. In Part 1, we showed you the con artist. The college dropout who faked a war record, stole Jack Parsons' girlfriend and savings, and turned a self-help book into a movement. In Part 2, the con becomes a church — and the church becomes something far worse. When governments revoke his tax exemptions and ban him from their borders, Hubbard does the only logical thing: he buys a fleet of ships and declares himself Commodore. What follows is a floating authoritarian state crewed by devotees working hundred-hour weeks for ten dollars, pre-teen girls appointed as his personal messengers, and punishments that included being thrown overboard in open water. While his followers ate rice and beans, Hubbard was pulling fifteen thousand dollars a week through shell corporations and stashing cash in Swiss bank accounts. Then there's OT III — the secret scripture members spend years and tens of thousands of dollars to access. Written by the same man who spent two decades cranking out pulp sci-fi for a penny a word. Operation Snow White. The Rehabilitation Project Force. The IRS capitulation. And a final act that ends with a paranoid old man hiding in a motorhome in California under a fake name, surrounded by llamas, asking someone to build him a lethal E-meter. He died alone. L. Ron Hubbard Part 1: "The Pulp Fiction Prophet" | March Madman Madness
A man lies in a naval hospital bed in 1945, claiming war injuries nobody can verify. He's been relieved of command — twice. One time for fighting enemy submarines that didn't exist. But by the time he tells the story himself? He's a decorated combat veteran who healed his own wounds through sheer willpower. None of it was true. And that was just the warm-up. Before Scientology, before the tax-exempt empire and the celebrity recruits — L. Ron Hubbard was a college dropout, a pulp fiction writer cranking out stories for a penny a word, and a man with an extraordinary talent for reading what people wanted to hear. In Part 1, we trace Hubbard from a restless childhood spent as the perpetual new kid, through a wildly embellished military career, into the occult rituals of Jack Parsons' Pasadena mansion, and straight to the publication of Dianetics — the book that turned a broke science fiction writer into the leader of a movement. Along the way: a bigamous marriage, a kidnapped baby, and the moment a con artist realized that if you package a self-help system as a religion, the money never has to stop. Part 2 drops Friday. 🕯️ Come Curious. Stay Strange. Secret Society of Strangers is part of the March Madman Madness series — five two-part deep dives into history's most dangerous minds. Aleister Crowley Part 2: The Great Beast 666 | March Madman Madness
Part 1 ended in Cairo. A man in an apartment. Three days. A voice speaking over his left shoulder. Part 2 is everything that followed — and it's stranger than anything he claimed to have conjured. A Mediterranean farmhouse. A dead Oxford graduate. A press corps that gave him a headline he wore like a crown. Benito Mussolini personally ordering him out of Italy. A British intelligence file that suggests the "wickedest man in the world" may have been working for the Crown the whole time. And then there's the triangle that changes everything: a rocket scientist who helped build what became NASA, a young writer who would go on to found Scientology, and Aleister Crowley — spiritual father to both of them. All of that is documented. All of it is real. Josh closes out the Crowley investigation this week, and Lee comes to some personal realizations he's not entirely comfortable with. The man died broke, addicted, and alone in Room 13 of a boarding house in Hastings. His funeral was so chaotic the British government had to write new regulations. That tracks. 🕯️ Come Curious. Aleister Crowley Part 1: The Birth of the Beast | March Madman Madness
His mother called him "the Beast." She meant it as an insult. He spent seventy-two years turning it into a legacy. Born into a deeply religious Victorian household in 1875, Edward Alexander Crowley became one of the most controversial figures in modern history — a world-class mountaineer, a self-styled prophet, a poet, a chess master, and the man the British press would eventually brand "the Wickedest Man in the World." But before all of that — before the rituals, the scandals, and the scripture — there was a boy who climbed cliffs that no one had dared attempt, rose faster through the ranks of the most powerful occult society in England than anyone before him, got blocked at the door, and burned the whole thing down. And then went to Cairo. In Part 1, Josh takes us from a cursed childhood through Cambridge, up the faces of K2 and Kangchenjunga, into the inner chambers of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn — and into a Cairo apartment in 1904, where a man sat alone for three days and claimed to receive the scripture of a new age of humanity. Was he a genuine mystic? History's greatest con artist? Something stranger than either? Part 2 is where it gets fully unhinged. This is where it starts. 🕯️ Come Curious. Stay Strange. Jack Parsons - Sex drugs and rocket science Part 2 ( March Madman Madness)
In Part 1, Jack Parsons built the future. He co-founded JPL, invented solid rocket fuel, and proved that getting to space wasn't science fiction — it was chemistry. In Part 2, a con man walks through his door and takes everything. L. Ron Hubbard arrived at the Parsonage in 1945 — charming, connected, and completely full of lies. Within months he would steal Parsons' girlfriend, drain his life savings, and disappear on a boat Parsons bought. Parsons would spend the rest of his short life fighting to get it back. Then the government got involved. His security clearance was revoked. His name was erased from the institutions he built. And on June 17, 1952 — one day before he was set to leave the country for good — an explosion tore through his home lab. The official ruling: accident. The evidence: not exactly clean. Lee, Josh, and Jen break down the Babalon Working, the Hubbard con, the five competing theories about how Jack Parsons died — and why the man who made the Space Race possible was written out of history. 🕯️ Come Curious. Jack Parsons - Sex drugs and rocket science Part 1 ( March Madman Madness)
He helped invent the fuel that would take us to the Moon. He co-founded what became NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. And he also tried to summon a goddess in the Mojave Desert. This week on Secret Society of Strangers, we kick off March Madman Madness with the unbelievable rise of Jack Parsons — rocket pioneer, occult leader, and one of the most quietly erased figures in American space history. In Part 1, we trace Parsons from Pasadena’s Millionaire’s Row to the corrugated iron sheds of Devil’s Gate, where a group of young misfits known as “The Suicide Squad” cracked the code of solid rocket fuel. His asphalt-based formula — GALCIT-53 — became the backbone of American missile systems and every Space Shuttle launch that followed. At the same time, Parsons was running an occult lodge devoted to the teachings of Aleister Crowley, reciting hymns to Pan before rocket tests, and turning his mansion — “The Parsonage” — into a commune of scientists, writers, artists, and ritual magicians. Then a red-haired science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard walked through the door. What follows is a story of genius, belief, betrayal, and the beginning of something far bigger than any of them understood. Was Jack Parsons a visionary who refused to separate science from mysticism? Or was he a brilliant man who couldn’t see the con standing right in front of him? Huge thank you to listener Satchel for the recommendation — you were absolutely right. This one is pure SSOS. Part 2 drops Friday. Come Curious. The Brom Family Massacre: He Told Them Before He Did It -Axe File # 4
🪓 THE AXE FILES — FILE #4 The Brom Family Massacre On February 18, 1988, in a quiet township outside Rochester, Minnesota, a 16-year-old walked into school and calmly told his friends: “I killed my family last night.” They laughed. He wasn’t joking. In the early morning hours, David Brom murdered his father Bernard “Bernie” Brom (41), his mother Paulette Brom (41), his sister Diane (13), and his little brother Ricky (9) with a timber axe inside their home in Cascade Township. Fifty-seven blows. Then he went to sleep. Then he went to school. But this isn’t just a story about a teenage killer. It’s about ignored warning signs. It’s about religious pressure and the late-1980s Satanic Panic. It’s about a notebook with a written plan that included the words: “Kill family and bury them.” It’s about confessions that no one took seriously. And it’s about what happened next. After serving 37 years in prison, David Brom was granted release following changes to juvenile sentencing laws in Minnesota. In 2025 and again in 2026, parole decisions put him back into the community under supervision. So we’re asking the question: When does a teenager cross the line from rebellion to annihilation? And after nearly four decades behind bars — does justice end, or does it evolve? In This Episode: The Brom family dynamic and the Catholic pressure cooker of 1980s Minnesota The warning signs friends heard for months The detailed premeditation in David’s notebook The confessions at school that finally triggered a welfare check The legal battle over the insanity defense under the M’Naghten Rule The 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that reshaped juvenile life sentences The 2025–2026 parole decisions and community response 🕯️ Come Curious. The Axeman of New Orleans - The Night a City Played for Its Life - Axe file # 3
In 1919, a killer sent a letter from "Hell" demanding an entire city play jazz — or die. New Orleans obeyed. Between 1918 and 1919, someone terrorized the Crescent City. They entered homes through impossibly small openings. They used the victims' own axes. They targeted Italian immigrant grocers almost exclusively. They never took money. And they never got caught. Six confirmed dead. Multiple survivors with stories that don't add up. A seven-month disappearance that perfectly overlaps with the Spanish Flu pandemic. And one of the most infamous letters in American criminal history — a message claiming to be from a "fell demon from hottest hell" who promised to spare anyone playing jazz on St. Joseph's Day. The entire city stayed up past midnight making music. No one died that night. Was the Axeman a Mafia enforcer? A lone predator exploiting pandemic chaos? A skilled burglar who understood exactly how to weaponize fear? Or something the early 20th century simply wasn't equipped to explain? Josh takes the lead on this one as the Strangers dig into court documents, witness testimony, forensic evidence, and over a century of theories — separating documented fact from folklore one swing at a time. 🕯️ Come Curious. The Villisca Axe Murders | Eight Dead in a Locked House | The Axe Files: File #2
On June 10, 1912, the small town of Villisca, Iowa woke up to its worst nightmare. Eight people—two entire families—were found brutally murdered in the Moore family home. Parents Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children, and two young overnight guests were killed with an axe while they slept. But this wasn't a quick crime. The killer stayed for hours. He ate their food. He covered every mirror in the house. He took the time to ensure no one survived. Then he locked the doors, took the house keys, and vanished into the Midwest night. The investigation was doomed from the start when over 100 townspeople trampled through the crime scene before police could preserve evidence. Three suspects emerged: a powerful Iowa Senator with a vendetta, a disturbed traveling preacher who confessed then recanted, and a suspected serial killer riding the rails across the Midwest. No one was ever convicted. The killer was never identified. And the house at 508 East Second Street? It still stands—and according to paranormal investigators and visitors alike, something remains inside. Join Lee, Josh, and Jen as they examine the crime scene, dissect the suspects, and explore why this 112-year-old unsolved murder still haunts the American Midwest. Lizzie Borden: 30 Axe Blows & NOT A DROP OF BLOOD | The Axe File #1
Welcome to THE AXE FILES — a month-long series tracking one of humanity's oldest tools through some of its most violent crimes. Four cases. One weapon. No romance. Lots of blood. 🪓 File #1 is open. Thirty hatchet blows. Two bodies. One spotless suspect. On August 4th, 1892, someone walked into a modest home in Fall River, Massachusetts and committed one of the most brutal double murders in American history. Andrew Borden's face was destroyed by eleven blows while he napped on his parlor sofa. His wife Abby lay upstairs — struck nineteen times — having died ninety minutes earlier. The killer would have been drenched head to toe in arterial spray. And yet, when police arrived, Lizzie Borden stood before them in a clean dress, with dry hair, spotless hands, and not a single drop of blood anywhere on her person. For 130 years, no one has been able to explain how that's possible. In File #1, Lee, Josh, and Jen break down the forensics that make this case impossible, the family powder keg that preceded the violence, and the trial that let a suspected killer walk free in ninety minutes. We'll cover: The 90-minute gap between murders — and why the killer stayed in a locked house The "blood math" that proves the killer should have been soaked The barn alibi that fell apart the moment police checked the dust The note that never existed The dress Lizzie burned three days later — in front of police The alternative theories — and why they ALL fail on the same question The hauntings that continue to this day at 92 Second Street Did Lizzie Borden kill her father and stepmother? If she did — how did she violate physics? If she didn't — who committed the perfect crime? The truth died in 1927. But the house still stands. And people say the footsteps never stopped. 🕯️ Come Curious. Stay Strange. CONTENT WARNING This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, domestic murder, and detailed crime scene analysis. The Yuba County Five: America's Dyatlov Pass
February 1978. Five men. A basketball game. A snack run. And then—a 70-mile drive in the wrong direction into a frozen mountain wilderness. It's been called "The American Dyatlov Pass." A case so baffling that nearly 50 years later, investigators still can't explain what happened. Ted Weiher. Jack Madruga. Bill Sterling. Jackie Huett. Gary Mathias. Five friends from Yuba City, California drove to Chico to watch a basketball game. They bought snacks. They got in the car. They never made it home. Their car was found days later—not on the highway home, but 4,400 feet up a remote mountain road in Plumas National Forest. The gas tank wasn't empty. The car wasn't stuck. Five healthy men could have pushed it free in minutes. So why did they walk 19 miles into a blizzard instead? Four months later, searchers found their bodies scattered across the mountain. One man survived for nearly three months in a Forest Service trailer—surrounded by enough food to last a year and a propane heater he never turned on. He starved to death in a pantry. He froze to death next to heat. Why didn't they eat? Why didn't they turn on the heater? Why did they hide from the only witness who could have saved them? And what happened to Gary Mathias—the Army veteran whose body was never found? In this episode, Jen takes the lead as we investigate one of America's most haunting unsolved disappearances. We examine every theory—from wrong turns and learned helplessness to schizophrenic episodes and foul play. Including the anonymous phone calls that came before any bodies were discovered, and the 2020 Sheriff's letter that officially declared Gary Mathias a victim of foul play. Some cases resist explanation. This one defies it. screaming while his body rotted from the inside. Edward VI became King of England at 9 years old. By 15, he was dead—leaving behind over 10,000 corpses and a religious reformation built on blood and fire. History remembers his sister Mary as "Bloody Mary." But Edward's six-year reign produced a body count that dwarfs hers. He watched heretics burn without flinching. He signed his own uncle's death warrant at age 11. He refused mercy for a woman begging for her life—because she disagreed with him about communion. He was a child. He was a monster. He was possibly murdered. And his ghost still haunts Greenwich Palace—coughing, gasping, reliving his agonizing death for 470 years. In this episode of the Bloody Royals series, Lee dives deep into the dark history of Tudor England's forgotten terror: the boy king whose Protestant vision for England was written in Catholic blood. We cover: The cursed birth that killed his mother Jane Seymour His isolated, indoctrinated childhood under Henry VIII's paranoid watch The Prayer Book Rebellion: 5,500+ dead Kett's Rebellion: 3,000+ massacred (Edward's journal entry: "Good.") The executions he personally ordered—including two of his own uncles His horrific death: hair falling out, nails detaching, body suppurating while still alive The mysterious unnamed woman who appeared in his final months with "healing drinks" Was Edward VI murdered? Marie Laveau. The Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. A name whispered in French Quarter alleys for nearly 150 years. In this episode, we separate documented history from accumulated legend—exploring the REAL Marie Laveau: a free woman of color who built impossible power across brutal racial boundaries in 19th-century Louisiana. We cover: Her verified baptismal records and the lies newspapers told about her age The gris-gris bags, the snake named Li Grand Zombi, and the St. John's Eve ceremonies at Bayou St. John Her intelligence network that made her appear genuinely clairvoyant The troubling fact that she owned enslaved people The "Marie Laveau II" mystery—did her daughter secretly replace her? The Man Who Watched Lincoln Die: Henry Rathbone's Descent into Madness
He was a hero once. The man who tried to stop John Wilkes Booth. The Union Army officer who grappled with Lincoln's assassin and took a knife to the arm while America's president bled out beside him. But what happened to Major Henry Rathbone after April 14, 1865, is a story history forgot—and it's far more disturbing than the assassination itself. This week on Secret Society of Strangers, host Jen explores the slow, tragic unraveling of Henry Rathbone: Civil War veteran, assassination witness, and eventually, a murderer. From the presidential box at Ford's Theatre to an asylum in Germany, we trace how untreated trauma can destroy a man over decades. How PTSD—a diagnosis that wouldn't exist for another 115 years—consumed him piece by piece. How survivor's guilt, public scrutiny, and Victorian-era ignorance about mental health created a psychological powder keg that would detonate 18 years later in a blood-soaked bedroom in Hanover. In this episode: The night at Ford's Theatre: What really happened in Lincoln's box Rathbone's Civil War service: Antietam, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, and the invisible wounds The 18-year spiral: Paranoia, delusions, and a marriage trapped by trauma December 23, 1883: The murder that shocked two nations 27 years in an asylum: A mind that never left the theater The curse of Clara's dress and the hauntings that followed Understanding 19th-century PTSD through a modern lens This isn't just a true crime story. It's a psychological horror story. It's a cautionary tale about what happens when society has no language for trauma, no treatment for invisible wounds, and no mercy for those who carry them. Henry Rathbone tried to save a president. Then he spent the rest of his life being destroyed by that one night. The Lost Colony of Roanoke
**EPISODE DESCRIPTION:** The Lost Colony of Roanoke remains America's oldest unsolved mystery. In 1587, 117 English colonists—including 17 women, 11 children, and newborn Virginia Dare—arrived at Roanoke Island. Three years later, they had vanished completely. No bodies. No graves. No bones. John White, the colony's governor, left his family behind to get emergency supplies. When he returned in 1590, he found only a fortress, scattered belongings, and one word carved into a tree: CROATOAN. **Quick apology from Lee:** If you hear me accidentally say "John Smith" instead of "John White" during this episode, my bad—brain glitch. We're definitely talking about John White, the Roanoke governor, not John Smith of Jamestown. Jeremy tried to catch it in editing, but if one slipped through, you know who I meant! Tonight we explore the impossible timeline: How Ralph Lane's 1585 expedition destroyed any chance of peace through the assassination of Chief Wingina (Pemisapan). Why pilot Simon Fernandes abandoned colonists at the worst possible location—sabotage, greed, or Spanish espionage? How the colonists survived the worst drought in 800 years while surrounded by hostile tribes and hunted by the Spanish Empire. We dig into 435 years of archaeological evidence—excavations at Roanoke Island, Hatteras Island (ancient Croatoan), and mysterious mainland Sites X and Y. European artifacts mixed with indigenous pottery. Women's jewelry. Tudor-era items. But zero human remains. The colonists left a clear message telling us exactly where they went. So why can't modern archaeology find a single skeleton? This isn't just another retelling of the Lost Colony legend. This is Dark Reality + High Strangeness—real people, real crimes, and evidence that defies explanation. 🕯️ **Come Curious. Ed Gein - The Plainfield Butcher
On November 16, 1957, police entered a Wisconsin farmhouse investigating a theft. What they found would traumatize seasoned investigators and change horror cinema forever. Ed Gein's crimes weren't just murders—they were documented reality so disturbing that three iconic horror films (Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs) drew direct inspiration from his case. The crime scene inventory reads like occult fiction, except every word was true. This isn't folklore. This is the meticulously documented case that proved the most terrifying monsters are painfully, impossibly human. We examine: The crime scene discovery that made hardened cops physically ill How extreme isolation and maternal control created America's most notorious killer Why this case fundamentally changed criminal profiling and forensic psychology The uncomfortable question: mental illness or pure evil? How one man's crimes shaped horror culture for generations We go beyond shock value to explore what Gein's case revealed about post-war rural America, untreated mental illness, and why this particular horror resonated so deeply in our cultural consciousness. ⚠️ Content Warning: Detailed discussion of grave robbery, human remains, and psychological abuse. Victims treated with respect while examining forensic reality. 🕯️ Come Curious. Stay Strange. 🕯️ Subscribe, rate, and share if you're part of the professionally curious and academically strange. THE VANISHING VILLAGE OF ANJIKUNI LAKE
November 1930. Canadian Arctic. 25 people. Gone. French-Canadian fur trapper Joe LaBelle arrives at a familiar Inuit settlement at Anjikuni Lake expecting warmth, food, and shelter. Instead, he finds something impossible: an entire village abandoned mid-task. Cooking pots still over dead fires. Rifles leaning against tent poles. Personal belongings carefully arranged. And seven sled dogs starved to death—still tied to their posts. But no people. No tracks. No bodies. No explanation. Then Joe discovers the graveyard. Every single grave has been carefully opened. The bodies—gone. Was this a mass alien abduction witnessed by trappers who saw a "cylindrical object" hovering over the frozen lake? An ancient Qalupalik—the Inuit water demon—that lures entire communities to their doom? A sensationalized newspaper hoax that spiraled into one of Canada's most enduring mysteries? Join Lee, Josh, and Jen as we excavate the layers of this Arctic enigma—from the original 1930 newspaper account to Betty Hill's alien abduction theories, from RCMP cover-up allegations to the terrifying Inuit legends that predate European contact by thousands of years. We fact-check the folklore, examine the evidence, and explore why some mysteries persist even when the truth suggests they never happened at all. This episode covers: Joe LaBelle's chilling discovery in the Arctic darkness The RCMP investigation and conflicting official reports UFO theories and the evolution of the story through decades Qalupalik, Wendigo, and other Arctic cryptids tied to mass disappearances The Missing 411 connection and modern wilderness vanishings Why we believe stories that feel true—even when they're not Content note: This episode discusses Indigenous missing persons, colonial violence, and systemic racism in historical investigations. 🕯️ Come Curious. Eastern State Penitentiary : America's Most Haunted Prison
Eastern State Penitentiary wasn't just America's first true penitentiary—it was a revolutionary experiment in breaking the human mind through isolation. In this deep-dive investigation, we explore how Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Benjamin Rush's vision of moral reformation through solitary confinement became one of history's most haunted locations. From Charles Williams (Prisoner #1) entering blind and hooded in 1829, to Al Capone screaming "Jimmy, leave me alone!" in his luxury cell, to Willie Sutton's legendary tunnel escape, Eastern State's 142-year history is soaked in suffering, innovation, and impossibility. We'll take you inside: ✓ The architectural revolution that influenced 300+ prisons worldwide ✓ The brutal reality of the Pennsylvania System's 24/7 isolation ✓ Horrific punishments: the Iron Gag, the Mad Chair, and the Hole ✓ Cellblock 3's medical horrors—tuberculosis treatments and psychiatric observation cells ✓ Decades of documented paranormal activity across all seven cellblocks ✓ Why 60+ paranormal investigation teams visit annually Featuring evidence from Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and firsthand accounts from staff who refuse to enter certain areas alone. Charles Dickens called it "immeasurably worse than any torture of the body." Modern investigators call it one of the most haunted places in the world. This is the complete story of how America's most progressive prison reform became its most notorious paranormal hotspot—where good intentions created hell on earth, and the ghosts still haven't left. 🕯️ Come Curious. Inside Heaven's Gate Cult Part 4 : A RECIPE FOR DEATH
March 1997. A mansion in Rancho Santa Fe. 39 bodies in matching Nike sneakers and purple shrouds. The largest mass suicide on U.S. soil. This is the finale of our Heaven's Gate series - the story of how Marshall Applewhite convinced 38 people that a comet was their spaceship home. ⚠️ Content Warning: Suicide, cult manipulation, death. Call 988 if you're struggling. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 988 IN THIS EPISODE: The Hale-Bopp comet discovery (665 million miles away, visible for 18 months) Heaven's Gate as internet pioneers (they were web developers before Amazon existed) Chuck Shramek's Art Bell appearance that validated the UFO hysteria Inside the "Monastery" - the final months of preparation The three-wave suicide protocol (March 22-26, 1997) Rio DiAngelo discovers his 39 dead classmates Why heavensgate.com still runs today THE SHOCKING TRUTH: Before they were a death cult, Heaven's Gate was a cutting-edge web design company. Their clients included Hollywood production companies and the San Diego Polo Club. They used Java, VRML, streaming video, and advanced HTML in 1996 - years before most corporations. Marshall Applewhite didn't just see the internet as a tool. He saw it as theological proof that humanity had completed its experiment. Time to graduate. Series Conclusion: 25 years. Inside Heaven's Gate Cult Part III: The Test | Castration for Salvation
⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: Suicide, cult manipulation, graphic medical content. Crisis support: 988 What happens when your co-messiah dies? Marshall Applewhite faced total theological collapse in 1985 when Bonnie Nettles died of cancer—after years of teaching they were immortal extraterrestrial beings. This is the moment Heaven's Gate became a death cult. In this episode, we explore the psychological crisis that led to one of the most disturbing chapters in cult history: eight men, including Applewhite himself, underwent voluntary castration. One nearly died when a former nurse botched the procedure in a makeshift operation. Discover how Applewhite's forbidden feelings for male follower Dick Joslyn, his devastating rejection, and his followers' validation created a feedback loop of increasingly extreme acts—transforming personal trauma into theological requirement. This wasn't calculated evil. It was something more human and more dangerous: a broken man so dependent on his followers' approval that he followed them into mutilation, preparing them to follow him into death. Inside Heaven's Gate Cult Part 2: The Classroom | When Evolution Becomes Erasure
Part 2: The Classroom | When Evolution Becomes Erasure September 1975. Waldport, Oregon. Population: 2,000. A poster appears on telephone poles: "UFO'S - Why they are here. Who they have come for. When they will leave." That night, 200 curious people walked into a community center. Twenty walked out and never looked back—leaving jobs, families, entire lives behind to become "students" in Ti and Do's cosmic classroom. In Part 2 of our Heaven's Gate investigation, we enter The Classroom. This isn't the story of broken people joining a cult. This is the story of: John Craig - a Republican politician and ranch owner who walked away from 200 acres and the American Dream Susan Noel - an RN with a successful career who stopped calling in to work and never went back Joyce Skalla - a mother of four who kissed her sleeping children goodbye and left letters on the breakfast table Thomas Nichols - Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols' brother, who disappeared for 20 years while calling himself "the happiest person in the world" This episode covers: The Waldport meeting that recruited over 20 members in one night Life in the wilderness: corporate structure meets nomadic isolation The "side-by-sides" system: psychological monitoring disguised as spiritual partnership How Human Individual Metamorphosis (HIM) systematically erased human identity The renaming, the shaved heads, the androgynous uniforms, the military precision Why "inappropriate curiosity" was a punishable offense The trust fund that let 48 people live in one suburban house without neighbors knowing How Ti and Do built total control through structure, not violence We profile the computer programmers, the nurses, the ranch owners, the mothers—educated, successful people who voluntarily gave up everything for a promise of physical evolution into extraterrestrial beings. This wasn't Jonestown's armed guards. This was something more insidious: voluntary imprisonment through belief. Next episode: Ti's death shatters everything, and Do rebuilds the group into something far more dangerous. 🔍 KEYWORDS: Heaven's Gate cult, Marshall Applewhite, Bonnie Nettles, Ti and Do, Waldport Oregon 1975, cult psychology, Human Individual Metamorphosis, UFO cults, cult indoctrination, true crime podcast, paranormal history, Nichelle Nichols brother, 1970s cults, voluntary isolation, psychological manipulation ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode discusses cult manipulation, family abandonment, and psychological coercion. Inside Heaven's Gate Cult -Part 1 : The Two
There's a website that's been running for 27 years. HeavensGate.com. Still maintained. Still recruiting. March 1997: Thirty-nine people died believing they were boarding a spaceship. But this story starts twenty-five years earlier—in a Houston hospital, with two broken people who turned their shared delusion into cosmic destiny. This is Part 1 of our 4-part Heaven's Gate deep dive. Marshall Applewhite: Texas preacher's son. Perfect pitch. Perfect shame. A man carrying a secret that 1930s Christianity called "abomination." Lost his marriage. Lost his career. Lost himself. Then a nurse told him he wasn't broken—he was chosen. Bonnie Nettles: Spiritual seeker. Believer in signs. The woman who told Marshall his breakdown was actually his calling. Together they became Ti and Do—The Two. Here's what makes Heaven's Gate different: No violence. No sexual abuse. No money schemes. They promised physical transformation—evolution while alive. NO DEATH REQUIRED. That's what made it so seductive. That's why intelligent people followed. In this episode: Marshall's haunted childhood. His sci-fi obsession. The hospital "resurrection." How two seekers in a van started building a cosmic classroom. And the original promise that would take 25 years to betray. This is the foundation. The beginning of the end. 🕯️ Content Warning: Cult manipulation and suicide discussed. Need help? Call 988. The Turtle Lake Massacre: Blood on the Prairie
Some murders are solved quickly. Others linger for decades, their answers buried with the victims. And then there are cases like Turtle Lake—where the truth seems to have been swallowed by the North Dakota prairie itself. In the early morning hours of 1920, an entire family was slaughtered in their isolated farmhouse. Jacob Wolf, his wife, their five children, and even a hired hand—all found dead in a scene so disturbing that hardened investigators struggled to make sense of it. But the brutality was only the beginning. Strange details emerged that transformed this from a tragic crime into something far more sinister: peculiar arrangements of the bodies, whispers of occult symbols, mysterious strangers seen lurking days before, and suspects who seemed to evaporate into thin air. Over 100 years later, the Turtle Lake Massacre remains one of America's most baffling unsolved family murders. The official investigation went nowhere. The community fractured under suspicion. And the questions multiplied: Was this the work of a drifter? A grudge turned deadly? Or something darker that no one wanted to speak aloud? Join Lee, Jen, and Josh as we dig into the blood-soaked soil of this North Dakota nightmare—examining the evidence, the theories, and the eerie details that suggest there's far more to this story than history recorded. ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains detailed discussions of extreme violence, murder of children, and disturbing crime scene descriptions. Typhoid Mary : Monster or Martyr ?
New York, 1900-1907. Wealthy families are falling ill with a deadly fever. No clear source. No obvious pattern. Just death following an invisible killer through the city's most exclusive neighborhoods. When investigators finally traced the outbreak, they found something terrifying: a woman who carried typhoid fever but never got sick herself. Or was she a scapegoat—targeted because of her class, her gender, and her refusal to disappear quietly? In this episode, Lee, Josh, and Jen dig into the strange case of Typhoid Mary: the science that condemned her, the authorities who imprisoned her twice, and the conspiracy theories that still swirl around her story over a century later. BASE NEUSCHWABENLAND OPERATION HIGH JUMP & HITLERS PENGUIN ARMY
Picture this: Hitler didn't die in that bunker. He escaped to Antarctica with his top scientists, built a massive underground fortress powered by geothermal energy, perfected UFO technology, and recruited an army of penguins as the perfect Aryan mascots. Too crazy? Well, the U.S. Navy sure didn't think so when they launched Operation Highjump in 1947—sending 4,700 troops and Admiral Byrd himself to the frozen continent for some very suspicious "scientific research." Spoiler alert: it involved a lot of explosions. But here's where it gets really weird, Strangers. In 1938, the Nazis actually did send a secret expedition to Antarctica aboard the MS Schwabenland. They dropped swastika flags from planes, claimed a chunk of ice the size of Germany, and—this is completely true—brought back Nazi penguins to the Berlin Zoo. Because apparently even flightless birds weren't safe from the Third Reich's recruitment efforts. Was Base Neuschwabenland a desperate grab for whale oil and bragging rights? Or did something far stranger happen in those ice caves beneath Queen Maud Land? Join Lee, Josh, and Jen as they waddle through 80 years of conspiracy theories, government cover-ups, and the most adorable war criminals in Antarctic history. While we're taking our summer break (because even ghost hunters need a vacation), we're treating you to one of our most chilling historical deep dives. Journey back to the 14th century—a time when "social distancing" meant hiding from the Grim Reaper himself. But wait, there's more morbid fun! We fast-forward to meet Samuel Pepys, the 17th century's most entertaining diarist, whose writings give us a front-row seat to the Great Plague of London. Think of him as history's first influencer, except instead of posting about avocado toast, he was documenting mass death and societal collapse. When humble farmer Alexander Telfair's farmhouse became ground zero for supernatural chaos, the countryside didn't just get spooked—it got absolutely wrecked. Stones rained from invisible hands (talk about a rock concert), disembodied voices provided unsolicited commentary in the dark, and furniture decided to redecorate itself without permission. Was it a malevolent spirit with commitment issues? Mass hysteria before it was trendy? Or something far more sinister lurking in the shadows of history, just waiting to ruin everyone's day? Join Lee, Jen, and Josh as they piece together historical accounts, eyewitness testimonies, and the chilling details of this nearly forgotten chapter in paranormal history. We're serving up sharp research, dark humor, and enough historical intrigue to make your ancestors nervous. Pack your lanterns, steady your nerves, and maybe grab a drink—The Ringcroft Haunting is about to remind you why 1695 was a terrible time to be a homeowner. 🕯️ Come curious. The Alien Autopsy Tape : Hoax, Horror, or Hidden Truth?
They said it was a hoax. A grainy VHS. A latex puppet. A media stunt gone nuclear. But what if it wasn’t? In 1995, the world watched in morbid fascination as a lifeless gray body was sliced open on national television—its black, lidless eyes staring into the abyss of public consciousness. Was it entertainment? Disinformation? Or the leaked footage of a real alien from the infamous 1947 Roswell crash? This week, the Society exhumes the most controversial 17 minutes of tape ever broadcast. We dig into the timeline, the anatomy, the shaky hands behind the camera... and what the Pentagon didn’t say. 🎙️ Autopsy scars fade. But this mystery? It just won’t die. #AlienAutopsy#1995AlienTape#RoswellRevealed#UFOFiles#ExtraterrestrialEvidence#ConspiracyTheories#HiddenTruths#TheTruthIsOutThere#HighStrangeness#SSOSPodcast#SecretSocietyOfStrangers#AlienDisclosure All Video & Audio Edited By Jeremy of Schroeder Audio If you would like to contact The SSOS E mail: [email protected] TikTok : @SSODPodcast Instagram @Secretsocietyofstrangerspod Facebook: Secret Society of Strangers Podcast Merch available - check out our linktree Full video episodes on our SSOS YouTube

"Dear Theodosia"-The unsolved disappearance of the Vice President's daughters
She was born into history — daughter of Aaron Burr, the scandal-scarred Vice President who once shot Alexander Hamilton. Brilliant, beautiful, and fiercely educated, Theodosia Burr Alston was destined to be more than just a footnote. But in 1813, she boarded a ship bound for New York… and vanished without a trace. In this haunting episode, the Society dives into the many mysteries surrounding Theodosia’s disappearance: pirates, shipwrecks, ghostly sightings, and even coded letters found decades later. Was it a tragic accident? Or a cover-up worthy of the Burr name? With nods to Hamilton and a heavy dose of dark historical intrigue, we untangle fact from folklore—and explore what might’ve happened when history's current swept Theodosia out to sea. 🕯️ Secrets, shipwrecks, and the shadow of legacy await.
