Episode 17: How God Works in Unexpected Places

In this episode of The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Hollesclaw explore Genesis 47 and ask: how does God work in your life when He places you somewhere unexpected? As Jacob’s family settles in Egypt, we see God’s providence unfold through leadership, hardship, and surprising blessing. Joseph models wisdom and humility in crisis, while Jacob reminds us that this world is not our true home. Even in famine, God causes His people to flourish in Goshen. This conversation highlights faith in difficult circumstances, contentment in every season, and trusting God’s purposes when life doesn’t go as planned. Wherever God has placed you, especially when it’s not where you expected, He is still at work, shaping your life and fulfilling His promises.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and onInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 16: What Do You Do When God’s Plan Doesn’t Make Sense?

In this episode of The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Hollesclaw explore Genesis 46 and ask: What do you do when God leads you somewhere that doesn’t make sense? As Jacob leaves the promised land for Egypt, we see a powerful picture of faith in uncertainty. God meets him at Beersheba with a reassuring promise: “I will be with you,” a theme echoed throughout Scripture and fulfilled in Christ. We discuss trusting God in confusing seasons, the importance of God’s faithfulness across generations, and the hope of restoration seen in Jacob’s reunion with Joseph. Even the move to Goshen reveals God’s wise provision. When life takes you somewhere unexpected, can you trust that God is still leading—and still working for your good?Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 15: Forgiveness and Freedom: Letting Go of the Past

In this episode of The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Hollesclaw explore the powerful climax of Joseph’s story in Genesis 45 and ask a deeply personal question: What do you do when someone who has wronged you finally confesses? As Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers, we see a moving picture of forgiveness, reconciliation, and the sovereignty of God.This conversation highlights what makes a healthy, Christ-centered church and how the gospel shapes our relationships. Joseph’s ability to forgive flows from his confidence that God used even evil for good. We also connect this story to the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ, where sinners are not only forgiven but welcomed. When repentance is real, will we extend grace or hold on to the past?Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 14: When God Confronts You with Your Past

In this episode of The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Hollesclaw explore Genesis 44 and ask a sobering question: what do you do when God brings your sin into the light? Through Joseph’s final test - hiding the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack - the brothers are forced to face their past guilt. Though innocent of this charge, they are not innocent before God. We discuss how God uses difficult circumstances to expose what’s in our hearts and call us to repentance. A key focus is Judah’s transformation, from selling his brother to offering himself as a substitute. This powerful moment points us to the gospel and the “great exchange” described in 2 Corinthians 5:21. When sin is exposed, will we make excuses, or own it and run to grace?Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and onInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 13: What Do You Do When You’re Backed Into a Corner?

In this episode of The Sift, we walk through Genesis 43 and ask a hard question: what do you do when you’re backed into a corner and forced to act? As famine tightens its grip, Jacob must send Benjamin to Egypt, revealing how God often works through pressure, not comfort. We explore the weight of difficult decisions, the danger of lingering guilt, and the freedom found in Christ’s finished work (see Romans 8:1). The conversation also challenges fathers to embrace their role in spiritual leadership and highlights the surprising grace Joseph shows his brothers. Ultimately, this passage points beyond itself to Jesus, reminding us that God’s kindness leads us to repentance and His providence is always at work—even in the hardest moments.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 12: How God Uses the Pressures of Life

In this episode of The Sift, we explore Genesis 42 and the story of Joseph and his brothers during a severe famine. As Jacob sends his sons to Egypt for grain, external pressures expose deeper internal realities—especially their buried guilt over Joseph.Standing before Joseph, now a ruler in Egypt, the brothers are tested, and their honest confession of sin begins to surface. This passage shows how God’s providence often works through pressure—not to crush us, but to lead us toward repentance, humility, and restoration. We also consider Jacob’s fearful response and contrast it with a growing trust in God’s sovereign plan. Whether you’re facing pressure from past mistakes, present trials, or uncertain circumstances, this conversation will help you see how God uses it all for His redemptive purposes through Jesus Christ.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local Church. Episode 11: When God Opens the Door

In episode 11 of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff explore Genesis 41 and the moment when God opens a long-awaited door. After 13 years of slavery and prison, Joseph is suddenly summoned before Pharaoh to interpret troubling dreams. What follows is a dramatic shift—from forgotten inmate to second-in-command over all Egypt. The hosts reflect on how seasons of waiting are often seasons of preparation. God was shaping Joseph’s character, humility, and leadership through hardship. When the opportunity came, Joseph was ready. He gave God the credit, interpreted the dreams of the coming famine, and offered a wise plan that saved a nation. This episode considers how to recognize and seize opportunities in the Lord’s timing with confidence, competence, and humility. Episode 10: How to Be Faithful When You Feel Stuck

In this episode of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff ask a timely question: How do you stay faithful to God when you feel stuck? Turning to Genesis 40, they reflect on Joseph’s life in prison, when he was falsely accused and seemingly forgotten.Yet Joseph doesn’t grow bitter. He serves. He attends to the cupbearer and baker, showing that faithfulness in hard seasons often looks like caring for others instead of turning inward. Suffering can shrink our world to our own pain, but Joseph models servant-hearted leadership and steady trust. “Interpretations belong to God,” he says, revealing a bold confidence in the Lord even when his own dreams remain unfulfilled. When the cupbearer forgets him for two more years, Joseph’s story reminds us: the pit is not the end. God’s Word stands firm, and for the believer, no season of waiting is wasted.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 9: The Cost of Integrity

In episode nine of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff wrestle with the question: Is integrity still worth it when doing the right thing costs you… and no one comes to your defense? Turning to Genesis 39, they follow Joseph’s story from slavery to prison and explore what it means to live coram Deo—before the face of God.Joseph refuses temptation, calling it “great wickedness and sin against God.” His integrity is tested repeatedly, costs him dearly, and lands him in prison. Yet the Lord is with him and causes him to flourish in Potiphar’s house and even behind bars. Integrity may lead through hardship, but it never places us outside God’s steady presence. The episode also offers hope for those who stumble: where sin abounds, grace abounds more. Through repentance and faith in Christ, there is forgiveness, restoration, and strength to walk forward again.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 8: How God Works in Messy Situations

In episode eight of The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Holsclaw have an honest conversation about how God works in the messy situations of life. Turning to Genesis 38, they examine Judah’s story and see him distancing himself from God’s people, ignoring wickedness, breaking promises, and trying to hide sin. The chapter is raw and uncomfortable, but very instructive.Through Judah and Tamar, we see how passivity, double standards, and compromise can create chaos. Yet even in the fallout, God’s purposes move forward. Judah’s eventual confession marks a turning point, reminding us that repentance matters and grace is real. The episode closes with hope: our failures cannot derail God’s plan. Plus, a new “On the Shelf” segment features Putting Your Past in Its Place by Steven Viars, offering a biblical perspective on how to understand painful experiences and how we have responded.Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sifton Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324andon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/On the ShelfThis week’s On the Shelf resource:Putting Your Past In Its Place by Stephen ViarsGet Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 7: Do The Hard Thing

In this episode of The Sift, Jeff and Nathan reflect on Genesis 37. The key principle that comes to the surface is that we need to do the hard thing. Jacob avoids dealing with the jealousy and division in his home, and his passivity puts the whole family at risk. Joseph, on the other hand, walks straight into a tense and dangerous situation by obeying his father and going to check on brothers who hate him. This part of Joseph’s story shows how unaddressed sin spreads, how silence can deepen wounds, and how difficult and uncomfortable conversations are often the path to restoration. Whether in marriage, family, church, or work, putting off what needs to be faced rarely makes it easier. We also see God’s steady sovereignty in the middle of human failure. We may complicate our lives through avoidance or fear, but we cannot overturn the purposes of God. Subscribe to the Sift Podcast!Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/18Jlr9A1gyWsoglyBhF3rU?si=4511590f88924da6Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sift-sorting-through-life/id1868521732Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@thesiftlifeStay Connected with The Sift on Social Mediaon Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/Get Connected with a Local ChurchIf you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 6: The Story of Joseph Begins

This week on The Sift, Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Holsclaw begin a new series by turning to the life of Joseph in Genesis 37. We explore the larger story behind Joseph’s life, including a bit of the background, and the broken family dynamics shaped by favoritism and jealousy, and the painful path that led to God’s purposes being fulfilled. Joseph’s dreams created tension, and even hatred, within his family. This episode sets the stage for a story that reminds us God is at work even through human sin, and that his plans cannot be stopped.Stay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and onInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/On the ShelfThis week’s On the Shelf resource:Joseph: A Story of Love, Hate, Slavery, Power, and Forgiveness by John LennoxLooking for a Church Home?If you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 5: Words that Heal and Build Up

This week on The Sift, we pick up our last conversation and take a careful look at words that heal and build up. Proverbs reminds us that life and death are in the power of the tongue, and that what comes out of our mouths flows from the heart. In this episode, we talk about the kind of words that give life - words shaped by grace, spoken with care, and offered at the right time. Drawing from Proverbs and the teaching of Jesus, we explore how wise speech encourages, comforts, and brings hope, and why learning to speak this way is part of growing in wisdom and Christlike maturity.Stay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/On the ShelfThis week’s On the Shelf resource:War of Words by Paul David Tripp Looking for a Church Home?If you’re looking for a local church to connect with, we’d love for you to learn more about Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama:https://www.redeemerdecatur.org

Episode 4: Words that Wound and Tear Down

In this episode, we look at words that wound people and tear them down, and why Scripture takes our speech so seriously. Proverbs tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue, because words are never neutral. They shape relationships, reveal what’s going on in the heart, and leave marks that can last a long time. We talk about harsh and angry words, cutting criticism, gossip, and the habit of “just being honest,” and we contrast those with words that give life, or words that encourage, comfort, and point people to the gospel. This conversation is an invitation to slow down, listen carefully, and learn to speak with wisdom and grace.Stay Connected with The Sift on Social MediaYou can find The Sift Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582488430324 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesiftlife/On the ShelfThis week’s On the Shelf resource:War of Words by Paul David Tripp Looking for a Church Home? Episode 3: How to Listen

Are you quick to listen?Would your spouse, your boss, or your parents say that about you?Scripture calls us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry,” but what does that actually look like in everyday life? In this episode of The Sift, we talk about what biblical listening really means, why it matters so much, and how our habits of listening (or not listening) shape our relationships.Join us as we sift through this simple but challenging command from Scripture and consider how learning to listen well can change the way we live and love others.

  16. 3

    Episode 2: What is Wisdom?

Wisdom doesn’t come automatically with age or life experience. It’s possible to grow older and still fail to grow wise.So where does wisdom actually come from? In this episode of The Sift, we explore the biblical answer found in Proverbs 1:7: the fear of the Lord. We talk about why wisdom begins—not ends—with fearing God, and how that fear shapes the way we think, live, and make decisions in everyday life.Join us as we sift through what true wisdom is, where it starts, and why it matters for anyone who wants to live faithfully in God’s world.

    Episode 1: True Friendship

In the first episode of The Sift, Christian friends Nathan Eldridge and Jeff Holsclaw sit down to talk about friendship—what it means, why it matters, and how Christian friendship is meant to sharpen and strengthen us. Drawing on the biblical vision of “iron sharpening iron,” they reflect on the kind of relationships that help us grow in wisdom, faith, and faithfulness over time.
