The Zon Ian Podcast (ZIP) features two Vermont State legislators, Zon Eastes and Ian Goodnow, as they navigate their first years under the golden dome in Montpelier. They discuss what they've learned, what they're working on, and the wacky antics they get into along the way. BCTV Executive Director Johnny Gifford joins them as producer, co-host, and to keep the conversation on track.

    Stuffing the Turkey

    Live from beneath the golden dome! Johnny takes another visit to Montpelier to meet up with Zon and Ian after a day of legislating. They admire the Statehouse garden, discuss the impending end of the session and the crunch time that happens prior to adjournment, talk about playing "whack-a-mole" with updating laws over time, and get into the "Miscellaneous Bill" that gets passed at the end of each session. Zon tries a new trick to preserve seltzer and gives some incredible analogies.

    Tunnel Vision

    The ZIPpers set up shop in the Harmony Place tunnel! This is their first recording following the legislature's 2026 crossover, so they dive into the state of the big Education bill, the Budget bill, and all the crazy things that can happen as bills bounce back and forth between committees and bodies. They also explain how the House votes on certain issues by voice, division and roll call. Zon serves flat lime seltzer.An informational session on the Education bill and its impact on restructuring Vermont's school districts will be held at Brattleboro Union High School on Saturday, April 25th at 2pm. It will be livestreamed by BCTV.

    Cheers!

    Zon, Ian and Johnny report in from Midnight's, a local bar in downtown Brattleboro! Town Meeting week marks roughly the halfway point of the legislative session, and a week off from being in Montpelier for legislators to catch up with their constituents and attend Town Meetings (in towns that have them on the first Tuesday). Zon and Ian discuss what they'll be up to during this week, and the chaos that will ensue when they return to Montpelier and crossover occurs, after Town Meeting week.

    Representing Real People

    In this first episode of the 2026 legislative session, Johnny takes a visit to Montpelier to catch in with Zon and Ian as they wrap up their first month back in session. They discuss ongoing bills and the nature of their committees, and dive into what it's like to represent constituents from their districts in addition to representing the whole state. They touch on the Governor's State of the State address. Ian and Johnny learn how Zon says the word "white".

    Episode 5: Quarter Zip

    The guys take over Brattleboro's community radio station, WVEW! In this mini episode, Zon and Ian talk about day-to-day life at the Statehouse and how it's changed over time, cafeteria politics, finding time for meal breaks and the notion of having a citizen legislature in Vermont.     Episode 4: Back At It

    After a several month long hiatus, the guys get together again and reflect on everything they've learned after their first year in the Vermont State Legislature. They also talk about their anticipated return to Montpelier, what work has already been done before the legislative session, and the implications of what could be coming to Vermont in 2026, namely continuing the work on education reform.

    Episode 3: Getting Behind Vermonters

    In this third edition of the ZIP (Zon Ian Podcast), the guys zoom out to recent federal legislation and what it could mean for Vermont. To wind down from the talk of looming federal threats, Zon, Ian and Johnny give a moment of recognition for each of their recent proud moments and accomplishments.
