The Perfect Storm and the Power of Forgiveness

Send us Fan MailMeet Steve – who, as a child with dyslexia thought he was what he heard others call him – “lazy or stupid”. With a family history of this wretched disease we call alcoholism, the risky behavior began early on. He would go on to hone his technical skills in the Army (thank you for your service, Steve), as well as a host of other things – including exacerbating his addictions, episodes of depression and suicide ideation. The dark would get darker including an accident that would take the life of a dear friend. And then ‘the miracle of forgiving himself’ and the regeneration recovery that took place turned it all around. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 86. You Were Meant for More Than This - One Woman's Story of Being Loved Thru the Mess

Send us Fan MailThe Ashleigh I know today is a bundle of joy and sunshine - though that's not always been her story. She always considered herself the 'ugly, awkward and odd kid' of 10 kids in her family, and began rebelling and using at an early age. With a message of 'we don't want you' at early on when she came out of the closet at 16, the story of real madness began. Running away from the foster home/system, she'd land in jail, and lose her biological mom to MS early on. Heavy drugs came into the scene and the spiraling began. Dying on the steps of our mutual church home, Ashleigh would be revived once again, finding true hope and IDENTITY. It's a beautiful story of reconciliation and healing that is available to ALL of us! Let's go listen now. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 85. All the Burned Bridges and the Disconnect in My Own Heart; A Story of Healing - from the Inside Out

Send us Fan MailMeet James. In critical shape in his early 30s, with a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver, a short life expectancy and 'incurable' as the diagnosis, James has a MIRACLE story to share - and not just of physical healing, but so much more. He tells of the duplicitous lifestyle he lived for so long, with one foot in the 'church world' and religion, and the other foot living solidly in the world with all the entanglements that addiction and more can bring. He even worked in the church, and masked things so well, that no one really knew. The clarifying moment came, when upon his diagnosis, his wife gave the ultimatum. He learned via the 'long route' that going to meetings and stopping drinking were one way - or he could do the work and get the real recovery he so desperately longed for. Which way did he go? Send us Fan MailMeet Gina - a radically transformed biker chick who loves Jesus, her family and LIFE! ...because she spent so much of it lost, addicted and so much more. Gina shares of her 'normal childhood' in a blended family - but with much older siblings who shared drugs with her at such an early age. She would be in and out of relationships/marriages, children, ultimately living the life filled with 'fancy cars in a fancy neighborhood, filled with nannies and maids' - and also living NEXT DOOR to the FBI. It wasn't long before she was forced 'under cover' or risk losing her daughter - ultimately prison would follow. The story only gets better from there, as she's about to celebrate her 15th birthday of being clean and sober on March 7th - just a couple of days prior to this episode releasing! Send us Fan MailMeet Anthony, Air Force veteran, who, in his words, didn't want to leave 'cracks' but rather 'craters' for his time on this earth. His work with what he deems the "super ninjas' of the military is an EPIC tale of heroism itself, but the loss he'd endure, leading to the PTSD and his raging alcohol-mixed with pills and more...he had a turning point decision to make when his wife confronted him with the 'ultimatum'. Send us Fan MailLet's meet Pete - Another of my favorite Redemption Stories!I share a special bond with Pedro, as you'll hear that he was a student at 180 Ministries when my son, DJ was initially in the program with him. Like so many, Pete suffered an unthinkable tragedy early on, and dealt with it as so many do - turning to drugs to numb the pain of it all. It would transpire to where he'd find himself facing 26 years in federal prison - but God had other plans! 79. Meet Veteran Mike Smith and The Gutter Gospel - "I Just Want Acceptance"

Send us Fan MailWOW! Today's guest, military Veteran, Mike Smith shares his harrowing story of growing up in a messy family, with an early event he describes as 'scarring me for life'. It brought on the first suicide attempt at 16...and would continue to unravel for years. Once in the Air Force with an option to work for NASA, things were good - until they weren't. Kicked out for weed, the humiliation spiral began. He speaks to the 'little old lady' who shared the Gospel with him the first time - and how God would continue pursuit of him throughout the ups and downs of his journey. Now as author, speaker and more, the REDEMPTION story continues to unfold. His book, The Gutter Gospel is his effort to "reach just one". Let's take a listen...If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 78. Live from London - Meet John - GO AFTER IT!

Send us Fan MailThe devastatingly difficult story from childhood and beyond. John's story is laden with difficulties - and HOPE! He speaks of the insanity of growing up in a low-income area on the south side of London, rife with abuse, alcoholism and so much more.  By age 11, he no longer wanted to be alive and attempted taking his own life. Gratefully, he was unsuccessful, but the trauma would continue - for many years. He began 'ducking and diving' as he calls it, getting into the criminality side of life with drugs and alcohol at the center. His quote, "addiction is a liar - it doesn't tell you what you are - only what you aren't" struck me. While not wanting to be the person he'd become, he found himself hiding in the back of a church, where he felt safe...and where he met God. Let's go listen to the story as he tells it! If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. And be sure to "like" and subscribe! 77. Are You Done? - when a true friend reaches in to bring the HOPE so desperately needed

Send us Fan MailMeet Jason - a well-mannered, clean-cut guy with a crazy story! Aren't they all?! I'm so grateful to have met Jason when my son was first in the Men's Center program at 180 Ministries. He was serving on staff as the Disciplinarian at that time - which brought its own unique challenges and opportunities. And yet, 'once isn't enough' when it comes to Jason's story of recovery. As it is for many, relapse can be a part of that recovery journey. With homelessness, shelter, jail and more as a part of his journey, the relationships would be the ultimate saving grace. When P. Daniel steps foot onto the scene one more time, Jasons asks himself, "Why is this guy here again?" - and we see once again, LOVE WINS. Wait til you hear the unfolding saga of yet another prodigal returns! If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. And be sure to "like" and subscribe! 76. Who Are You Really? - the Frequently asked Question, as she was formerly living as a fully transitioned MAN

Send us Fan MailYou'll LOVE the story Kathy Grace shares as she knows FULL WELL who her identify is now - tho she walked in a different understanding for years. With an abusive father and timid mother, she saw/believed that 'emotions are bad' and 'I can be replaced'. She shares knowing about God early on, but never having a relationship. And with the messaging she received and believed, Kathy Grace began the transition process around age 19, changing her name, doing the hormone therapy and more. Her incredible testimony ends with her finally hearing God calling her back to become the woman He had designed her to be - after living for ELEVEN years ) in the lifestyle...and she DOES. (I misspeak that number in my intro)Listen as she shares the HOPE and ENCOURAGEMENT that we all need at some point - "You haven't gone too far. 75. Invisible to Transformed - the incredible story of REDEMPTION from nearly dead to the Abundant Life

Send us Fan MailThere are some stories that are so incredible - they MUST be shared with the world! And Ashley's story is just that. She is not only a survivor but now THRIVING in her story of recovery and redemption.Ashley spent much of her life being the 'invisible one', mistreated and abused, frequently placed in really harmful situations as a child. She would be the caretaker to her siblings and considered herself the 'rescuer' until the cycle of addiction began to consumer her, too. She now speaks to learning how to 'show up and be seen and still have scars'! I relate so well, don't you? 74. A Pattern of Destruction and a Divine Set-up; How God was the Source and Community a Key

Send us Fan MailMeet Jonathan and Michelle - amazing couple who just celebrated their 17h wedding anniversary as I upload this episode! You'll enjoy hearing the journey of Jonathan, who grew up in my hometown of Billings, MT, where it wasn't uncommon for the adults in our world to drink - and for many of us to think that was 'normal' - whether that meant a destructive lifestyle or not. In Jonathan's words, he thought that's what it meant to be a 'grow up'.The destructive patterns would begin early on, as they do in so many of the stories we hear - and then came what would be known as 'the Divine Set up! Years down the road, Michelle has made a list of the things she was praying for in a godly man. Y'all - the story is so beautiful! 73. Under the Influence of Myself - desperately seeking the 'solution to shame'

Send us Fan MailMeet Joe - with a harrowing story of addiction, suicide attempts, and no idea of his identity, Joe shares some explicit parts of his journey. As such, you'll hear me add a word of CAUTION in my opening dialogue - to listen at your own risk. Parts of his testimony were difficult for me to hear, and yet stories of heroine abound, as do trap houses and rescuing children and women from trafficking - they are more common than I know or understand. Now, however, Joe is a messenger of HOPE, with his own ministry called, 'Warpath Ministries', he is on a mission to share that same hope - the hope of Jesus Christ. And as you'll hear, Joe has paid the price, sharing in his words that, "Pain is the price of admission to a new life" - and what a life it is! Please listen - I feel this message is anointed and there are others with whom you can share who will benefit from this very raw and vulnerable testimony. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 71. Learning to Do This God's Way - one woman's story of overcoming her own dysfunctional behaviors, stepping into her healthiest version!

Send us Fan MailMeet Vanessa! Her story is one for the co-dependents among us. Vanessa recalls a rather ideal childhood, yet now knows it was the caring big sister who 'shielded' her from so many of the realities that she wouldn't come to learn about until her middle school/high school years. Her father was a high-functioning, high-producing alcoholic who maintained such a solid image - until there was (in Vanessa's words), the big crescendo! For all of us, somewhere along the way, the house of cards come crashing down. Fortunately for Vanessa and her family, the desire to seek help from their head-of-household took a turn for recovery - and thus began the road to healing for each of them. Send us Fan MailMeet Char'Dae, PhD candidate with an extraordinary background! Her mantra, 'it's never too late' is such an allegory of OVERCOMING! Feeling so very different at the earliest age, Char'Dae credits her Grandfather with the message to her young heart that said, "Just be you". Ever sensing she wasn't 'enough', she went to the counseling center in college, where, though she wouldn't find anyone who looked like her, she began to understand that her struggles were rooted in anxiety and depression. With a mom who struggled with alcohol, as well as her beloved Grandfather, Char'Dae knew she had a significant calling. Hearing her life struggles including a near suicide, she encountered what she now knows was a Divine Interruptions to her plans. Send us Fan MailMeet Susan - Mom to Andrew from our last episode! This mother shares the good, the bad, and the ugly of this disease through the lens of a parent. As a military family, there were ample moves along the way, and somehow that saying, "Birds of a feather, flock together" rings true in this story. At one point along the way, she shares the fearful dark side of the near-fatal overdose situation, in back-to-back trips to the ER. Ultimately, Andrew, recognizing the truth of his situation, stating, 'I need help.' But the story doesn't end there. Her back story in learning of Teen Challenge and actually hearing David Wilkerson speak is captivating. 61. The "Gold Standard" of Recovery - from the penitentiary to 'the better story'

Send us Fan MailMeet Steve - whose gripping story of recovery and redemption eclipse the long and winding road, with a 13-year stop along the way in a Colorado penitentiary. Steve is well-versed now in what he refers to as the "Gold Standard" of recovery. And trust me, having tried sobriety for ten years on his own, he learned some of the most difficult lessons in the hardest of ways. From feeling that sense of 'socially awkward' with which so many can identify, Steve became the 'terrible drunk' with a real Jekyll and Hyde personality to go along with it. Having his first drink at age 13, he, unlike so many others, literally hated it! But the spiraling pattern of this disease in his journey was just beginning. Fortunately, God was going to write 'the better story' on the other side of some exceedingly difficult days. The HOPE within Steve's story is available for YOU, too! If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. And be sure to "like" and subscribe! 60. Still In the Hard

Send us Fan MailGreetings and Happy New Year! I love this time of year - this sense of 'new beginnings'. Today I'm so happy to introduce you to Christine - a dear friend in recovery in my own program, ironically called 'New Beginnings'! Christine shares her testimony in such a raw, authentic, vulnerable way - one I know you'll relate to. My hope is, that while she, too, experienced the relapse of a loved one, the story didn't end there. Much like I had to learn, as well. Which is why the title holds such relevance to me. With an 'ideal' childhood as she recalls, she soon recognized that there was a lot she didn't know or understand, and would have to learn through her own process of discovery - oftentimes messy - much like our own.She shares how she and her spouse are working really hard in this space of "honest, open and humble". And that's what I believe you will hear woven throughout this episode. Christine doesn't hold back anything, and yet her humility in this space of learning is so precious. I hope it blesses you deeply. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. And be sure to "like" and subscribe! 59. Hope & Hard

Send us Fan MailMeet Lacy...beautiful entrepreneur, who, from the outside looking in, has it all together. So goes so many of our stories!Yet you and I both know, it's far from the truth. By now we recognize that literally, everyone has a story. Which is why I'm so grateful to each person who bravely shares their experience, strength and hope, to give us just that, for when we most need it. Lacy is no stranger to 'hard' as her winding story will speak to. From divorced, alcoholic parents, to jail, to her own divorce and more, you'll be encouraged to know that you, too, can do hard things . Once feeling like the 'throw away child' and acting accordingly, she now models a different life for her own children, and those with whom she's blessed to share in her home-schooling journey and beyond. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. Send us Fan MailMeet Creigh, contestant on The Voice! I was so inspired when hearing his introduction on this year's season of The Voice, I immediately reached out to see if he would be willing to share his awesome testimony! Fortunately, he shared his 'yes' and here we are!To hear once again that "You are not alone" and to not let this disease 'rob you of your best life' was so encouraging! 57. I'm Not Done With You Yet

Send us Fan MailMeet JD - Men's Center Director for 180 Ministries here in Denver. His story begins as a young kid, lacking self-confidence and real identity, though not a bad childhood as some stories.Recognizing he wanted to 'get away', he'd ultimately join the Marines and land in Okinawa, Japan for his first assignment. Things got dark, as this self-proclaimed former 'people pleaser' would gravitate towards the 'bad guys', diving into behaviors where, ultimately, everything came crashing down. With a sexual assault situation that never got resolved, he fell deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of addiction, not even realizing how bad things had gotten, with meth and heroine now as his 'friends'. But God - had a better plan for JD when he finally sought help and heard that "He sees and He knows." And friend, He sees you, too. 56. It's OK to not be OK

Send us Fan MailKaren is well acquainted with the depth of loss, grief and all that is enveloped in the world of the alcoholic/addict. And yet, with 37 years of recovery to her name, she now helps countless others in their journey to recovery. There are so many nuggets of wisdom shared throughout this episode! A favorite quote from the 'big book' states, "Glass in hand, we have warped our minds". And with the main dish and multiple 'sides', Karen was well on her way to a life 'off the rails'!Listen now as she speaks to the hole in her soul that would have her trying numerous ways in which to fill it. She speaks to things with which we're all well acquainted - the shame and guilt. Pulling her 3-yr-old daughter close, she recognized she was dying from the disease of alcoholism. 55. Nothing is Unredeemable

Send us Fan MailMeet Kayla - self-admitted naive, sheltered home-school girl from a loving family who meets her Prince Charming at Bible School! Life is grand and married life 'seemed so easy' - until it wasn't. Kayla had never known or experienced the devastating effects of alcoholism or addiction in her family. And when she was introduced, the ugly, dysfunctional story began to unfold with fervor. Grateful to those who would step into their story and intervene in love, as only real love can do, the story doesn't end here. The emotional roller-coaster ride that she and her four children were riding includes an incredible ongoing story of recovery. If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 54. The Secrets Are Pervasive - the Call that Changed it All

Send us Fan MailMeet Monica. As a self-proclaimed "fixer of people", she would find solace, relief and begin her healing journey in the rooms of Al-Anon. And what a journey it's been! Her story begins the week after Thanksgiving when her son-in-law called stating, "I can't find her" (implying her daughter was missing). Subsequent calls were about to ensue to the hospitals, jails and so on - when the walls came crashing down in the worst, most unexpected ways. The tragedies of this disease are as varied as the number of people impacted. Horrific. Distressing. And yet, even in the midst of the worst, God comes shining through in the most unexpected ways, with FORGIVENESS at the heart of it for us all. You don't want to miss this episode, and I pray you'll share it with numerous others in your spheres of influence. In the course of our conversation, we look at the intersection of mental health and addiction, and beyond. With a wealth of experience around the 'soothing' component of addiction, he poses some great questions and recognizes that no one size fits all. I'm left pondering his response to my question regarding HOPE, and any thoughts he'd like to share with our listeners. Send us Fan Mail"I felt the shame" - was one of the earliest quotes from Kathy. As she shares her own tragic experience at such an early age, she's also quick to point out that "God kept me" as things could have gone drastically different for her. There are so many beautiful highs littered with numerous lows - sound familiar?Kathy's story is just that - it's hers. But trust me, you will find multiple connections in her story likely to your own journey. Our prayer is always that you will find HOPE and HELP - consolation to know that you're NOT ALONE. Send us Fan MailMeet Nick Pollard - self-proclaimed people pleaser and recovered addict. This Instagram personality has an incredible story (as we all do!) and how he is sharing his many breakthroughs and thoughts on recovery so publicly is how we met. You'll hear the heart-wrenching story of multiple failed marriages, trying to soothe the pain of family revelations that hurt so deeply, he was simply self-medicating, as we all do in some form or another. He knew he was dying when he reached out for help - spending 4 days in detox before he was able to blow less than .8. It's heartbreaking and celebratory all wrapped inside this incredible episode. 49. Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places

Send us Fan MailMeet Jennifer in Atlanta - as a young girl, she recalls always trying to avoid the pain in the short term for the grander plan in the long run. Her pattern of realizing that "takers are always attracted to the givers" is likely something with which many of us can identify. Recognizing now that she was always searching for the unconditional love that seemed to be missing from the 'good girl' role she'd strived to be for years. Later she would make some changes, letting go of those toxic relationships that seemingly plagued her journey throughout much of her story. Her recovery includes learning to keep her side of the street clean, and to "learn to stand not against your fellows, but for yourself". If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. 46. You Are Forgiven

Send us Fan MailIn this incredible episode, you will meet Sharon; renowned author, speaker, professor and therapist. The depth of this woman's story of recovery has such far reaching levels of impact. I urge you to not only listen, but to share broadly. From growing up in a teetotaling, legalistic religious household, Sharon really had no grid for the idea of alcohol having any sort of impact beyond "relief", when her ER doc suggested a glass of wine to ease her anxiety (there wasn't an understanding of what that was 'back then'). As you can imagine, for Sharon, that first drink quickly spun out of control. And as one who was active in her church community, raising children and in the throes of 'adulting', the shame and isolation would soon become her story, too. Sharon Hersh offers a treasure-trove of experience, strength and hope - for those on BOTH sides of the recovery journey. She is a prolific writer with such extraordinary talent for touching the very depth of your soul with her words that drip with wisdom - from her journey and beyond. Be sure to find her on social media, grab any of her books (I can't wait to read her most recent) and share her story broadly. It's one that will touch everyone! If you enjoyed this podcast, please share with someone you believe would benefit. And be sure to "like" and subscribe! Send us Fan MailMeet Eric...just WOW! This story is a bit outside of the usual conversation, as Eric's addiction included alcohol, but pornography was his drug of choice. He shares some incredible stories of his struggle - and to be clear, it is the struggle - UNSPOKEN in our culture in large part - of so many. His resources are also something of note - to include that he, himself is now a coach for men struggling in this area. He names books for kids, both toddlers and teens on this absolutely NECESSARY CONVERSATION, some apps and so much more. We are already planning the 'next' recording with his female counterpart who coaches many women who have spouses struggling in this area. You won't want to miss that one, either! If not for you, for certain, someone in your circle of influence. And yet, we know that the disease of addiction knows no boundaries.  There's no race, socio-economic condition, sex or otherwise that this disease has not touched. While she thought her ex-husband was the 'prince-charming' in her story, rescuing her from a deplorable situation, she would come to learn differently...much differently. While learning to 'do something different' and spending years in this space of self-discovery, working the steps and doing the work has freed Joann to new levels at every turn! 41. The Great Equalizer

Send us Fan MailWell, hello again listeners! I'd like to offer my apologies for taking so long in getting a new episode your way. There have been numerous reasons behind this 'lapse', including rescheduling several of our guests due to conflicts - as well as having Covid and losing my voice for a bit.  (there's some relapse involved, as well, which I'll share on another episode)All of that to say, I can't WAIT for you to hear today's guest. Her story is not only remarkable in her own recovery journey through an exceedingly difficult childhood with alcoholic, abusive parents - with trauma so extensive that by age 21 she wanted to end her life! Then...recovery...with God doing for her what she couldn't do for herself. Ultimately, the struggles with her own grown son began, where he would be walking down the same dark path. It truly is remarkable - not only how this woman and I crossed paths, but I now know it was an incredibly important 'Divine connection'. Finally, the resources she shares are extensive! He shares of the 'early days' where, as a star athlete and more, his 'recreational use' spiraled out of control after losing his best friend to suicide. Adam would spend years in search of sobriety - and from being 86'd from the homeless shelter, to Bible studies and men's groups, hoping to obtain that which he most longed for...Adam is now is ON MISSION to provide the HOPE that living clean and sober brings.
