TWIC - Week 20-21 - Holiday
This Week in Class, learned aboutrest, relationships, and resets. After two weeks off for the holidays, I’m reflecting on what time away really teaches you—not just about teaching, but about life. I talk about family trips (including a few roller coasters at Busch Gardens), reconnecting with people who truly want you in their life, and how to “go where you’re celebrated, not just tolerated.”I also share how I’m approaching goal setting for the new year—with accountability, small daily actions, and a focus on deepening the relationships I already have instead of chasing new ones.On the tech side, I dive into what happens when a hard drive fails, why I’m obsessed with network-attached storage, and how teachers (and photographers) can back up their work without losing their minds. There’s even a quick tip for teachers who want to stay connected with their students over break—and a reminder that sometimes rest really is the work.If you’d like to support my classroom, check out my Amazon Wishlist or email [email protected] bit of support helps me create a more engaging learning space for my students.

TWIC - Week 19 - Spending Money
This Week in Class, I learned about:free time, teacher spending, and crock-pot cocoa. It was the final week before the holiday break—complete with pajama day, parties, and a few valuable lessons about structure, generosity, and connection. I share how my daughter joined me as an “elf” in the classroom, what it taught me about kids who crave schedules even during “fun” days, and how a little structure can make free time feel safer for some students.I also reflect on how teachers spend money—often in unexpected ways—from themed outfits to party supplies, and even small treats that reward effort. Is 25 cents per student a good rule of thumb for classroom incentives? Let’s talk about it!As a new teacher and first-year teacher, I’m learning that teaching is as much about managing emotions and expectations as it is about academics. I touch on how student behavior isn’t personal, how I plan to “reset” after break with a fresh Day One mindset, and how building a positive, connected team with my fellow teachers makes the work lighter. And yes—this week even included a lesson in adult penmanship (mine!), thoughts on workplace friendships, and the sweet discovery of crock-pot cocoa.Listen in for classroom insights, teacher reflections, and a little real talk from your friendly neighborhood second-grade teacher. If you’d like to support my classroom, check out my Amazon Wishlist or DM to adopt my class. TWIC - Week 18 - The Old Black Man at the Job
This Week in Class, I learned a lot about:signals, routines, and relationships—both with my students and with my co-workers.using lights and music to manage classroom behaviorrealizing I’ve officially become the “old Black man at the job,” it’s been another week of growth as a second grade teacher. I share the fun and joy of experiencing an in-school field trip with my students, how keeping the lights low helps create a calm environment, and why using music like James Brown’s Make It Funky brings energy and connection into the classroom.I also talk about modeling writing for my students, the importance of clarity, and how relationships drive learning. On a personal note, I even got my first Christmas gift from a coworker—which made me realize how special it is to be part of a supportive teaching community after so many years of working on my own.Being a new teacher and a first year teacher means figuring it out as I go, making mistakes, and learning what really works in the classroom. Every week I discover more about how to balance structure with flexibility, and how building strong relationships makes all the difference for my students. If you’d like to support my classroom, my Amazon wishlist is linked below. TWIC - Week 17 - Hitting the Reset Button
This Week in Class, I learned that the first day of school doesn’t only happen once—it’s a mindset you can return to when the classroom needs a fresh start. From anchor charts and motion-based classroom rules to gamified behavior systems, this week was all about resetting routines and reinforcing expectations. I even found a breakthrough way to teach pictographs using a metaphor they could finally understand (spoiler: it involves Mickey ears and invisible passengers). It’s becoming clear that when students feel seen and celebrated, they try harder—and when I put the “cookies on the bottom shelf,” even my struggling learners rise to the occasion.I also unpacked how relationship-building impacts behavior, why good days can feel suspicious when you’re new, and what to do when you’re trying to balance your attention between the loudest voices and the quiet successes. Whether you're a first-year teacher or just needing a mid-year reset, there's something here for you.Listen in for practical tips, teacher truths, and a challenge: What’s one routine you can reset this week to shift the energy in your classroom?📚 Want to support my class? TWIC - Week 15 & 16 - Teaching in My Sleep!
This week in class, I reflected on the surprising moment I was asked if I’d even be back next year. (Spoiler: yes, I will.)As a new teacher, it's wild how much of this first-year experience looks different from the inside—and how easy it is for others to assume you’re not going to make it. But even on the hard days, I’m still here, still showing up, and still rocking second grade.I talk about the social side of teaching too—those staff events where you’re not sure how “off the clock” you can actually be. I’m figuring out what kind of professional life I want to build, one that feels full, not just functional. And hey, I even had a full-blown teacher nightmare while I was on break (beds in the classroom?!). Apparently, the job follows you into your dreams. If you're a first year teacher or new to the classroom, I'm right there with you. I also share how I plan to reset classroom rules after the break (don't skip this!) and how you can support my class during Giving Tuesday if you’d like to make a difference for my students.Let me know how you're building balance in your teaching life—especially if you're navigating your first year like I am. TWIC - Week 14 - It Ain't My Fault!
This Week in Class, I learned one of the most freeing lessons of my first year teaching: I’m not responsible for my students’ behavior. I can set the tone, create structure, build a culture — but at the end of the day, their choices are theirs. And honestly? That mindset shift changed everything for me.In this episode, I talk about finally catching my footing in faculty meetings (they hit a little different when you’re used to working for yourself), the unexpected classroom hack involving sticky tack, and how I’m experimenting with a new behavioral incentive called The Compliment Wall. I also opened up about the tough side of teaching — when a student leaves unexpectedly — and how I tried to give both my students and myself some closure. Plus:🎶 Why James Brown’s “Make It Funky” might be my new classroom theme music✍🏾 The old-school teacher skill I’m determined to master📝 And the gentle reminder that sometimes, it really ain’t your faultNew episodes every week! Hit follow on Apple, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app. Join the conversation: What’s your classroom theme song? Would you let a parent just pop into your room? And how do you handle it when a student leaves? Message me or drop a comment on socials — I’d love to hear your stories.

This Week in Class - Week 13 - Feeling Like a Failure
This Week in Class, I learned the power of patience, presence, and protecting your peace. It was test week, and between the stress, surprise tantrums, and a few tiny wins, I realized how much my energy shapes the room before I even speak. In this episode, I’m sharing classroom stories, life lessons, and a reminder that even in chaos, there’s always a win to be found if you look for it.✨ Teacher tips, real talk, and a challenge for you: how do you protect your peace when everything feels out of control?💛 Want to support my classroom? TWIC - Week 12 - Hard to Say Goodbye
This Week in Class, I learned how moving desks can change classroom energy, how rewarding good behavior keeps students motivated, and why my class store is a game-changer.I also opened my classroom economy, tested new incentives, and realized the power of praising the whole class—not just individuals. But teaching isn't just about lessons and rewards.A student told me they’re moving, and I may not get a chance to say goodbye. It hit me how transient this journey can be. These kids come into our lives, we pour into them, and sometimes, they’re gone before we know it. How do you handle goodbyes in the classroom—or in life? TWIC - Week 11 - I Am Mr Gregory
This Week in Class, I learned about: making anchor chartsconnecting with students over lunchand why I might be starting a printer paper movement. But beyond that, I found myself reflecting on something deeper—why male teachers, especially Black male teachers, are so rare in early elementary school. From navigating teacher dynamics to seeing how representation impacts my students, this week gave me a lot to think about. Tune in as I share my experiences, lessons, and small wins from the classroom. And I want to hear from you—did you ever have a male teacher in early elementary school? What about a Black male teacher? Let’s talk about it.

TWIC - Week 10 - Fieldtrip!!
This Week in Class: Week 10 - Field Trip!!!This week in class,I learned the difference between a teacher workday and a professional development day (PDD)figured out a better way to use the paper cutterand went on my first field trip as a new teacher with my students! The PDD training emphasized the importance of building relationships with students—because if they don’t connect with you, they won’t want to learn from you. I also had a small victory in office supplies when I discovered the secret to using the paper cutter properly! The field trip was an adventure—imagine taking a group of second graders to a nature park where they have to be quiet. Spoiler: We didn’t see many animals! But they did get hands-on with a snake, a turtle, and a baby alligator. Plus, I got some great pictures to share with parents. This week also had me rethinking my classroom economy—should I shift from treasure box prizes to experience-based rewards? And I was reminded that if I want more positive behavior, I need to reinforce it intentionally. What are your go-to positive reinforcements? TWIC - Week 9 - Florida Snow Days
This Week in Class: Week 9 - Florida Snow DaysThis Week in Class, I learned about:getting help I don’t need as a new teacherplaying “teacher whack-a-mole” with student screens the struggle of getting things home and back to school. With the hurricane cutting our school week down to just two days, things felt even more chaotic. As a first year teacher, figuring out when to accept (or redirect) help, to using GoGuardian to keep students on task, this week was all about balance. I even discovered that sometimes, kids will eventually just give up and do what they're supposed to do—if you make it hard enough to be off-task!I reflected on life’s deeper lessons too—like how asking for help is a skill in itself. Sometimes, you need to know what you need before you can even ask for it.Listen to hear more insights, tips, and a challenge: How do you handle getting help when you don’t know what you need? TWIC - Week 8 - The Power of the Stamp
This Week in Class: Week 8 - The Power of the Stamp This week in class, I learned about the power of parent conferences the power of the stampthe power of strategic printing! As a first-year teacher, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into my first parent conference, but I quickly realized that my ability to connect with people helped set the tone. I also discovered how much insight parents can provide about their children—sometimes, the smallest details make a big difference in the classroom.Speaking of small details, who knew that something as simple as a stamp could completely change student engagement? My second graders are all about earning their stamps—so much so that they’re even picking their favorites! And while managing a classroom economy is one thing, managing a school printer is another. Let’s just say I’ve learned some new strategies for getting my copies done without wasting time (or paper).Beyond teaching, I also had my first telehealth experience—quick, easy, and no waiting rooms! But back to the classroom: What’s one thing you wish teachers knew about your child during parent conferences? Or if you’ve had a memorable conference, good or bad, I’d love to hear about it! TWIC - Week 7 - I Am an Art Collector
This Week in Class: Week 7 - I Am an Art CollectorThis Week in Class, I learned about implementing a class economy to encourage positive behavior while balancing efficiency with my time and movements. From creating "Hero's Rewards" with custom superhero money to reflecting on classroom time management, this week felt like I was becoming both an economist and a strategist. I even discovered a funny parallel between running a class economy and national monetary policy—it’s all about balance! I reflected on how little things like student-created artwork can brighten your day, even in the midst of chaos.Teaching lower-grade students has its unique joys, like witnessing their kindness and creativity firsthand. Plus, I found myself laughing at moments like being called "Teacher" by a janitor—it’s a humble reminder of how others perceive you in this role. TWIC - Week 6 - Getting My Steps
This Week in Class, I learned about the challenges of classroom management and balancing teacher tasks, all while dealing with the high mental load of teaching. I also got some much-needed rest after a sick day, which led me to reflect on how important it is to take care of yourself as a teacher. One question I had was: Do teacher steps count toward fitness goals? How much does moving around the classroom really add up? I also shared some fun moments with the kids, including their favorite songs like "Banana Banana Meatball" and "Moose on the Loose."I reflected on the importance of classroom organization, like ensuring students have sharpened pencils ready before lessons start. And I learned that despite the stress, kids will learn regardless—if I stay organized and engaged, they'll get the second-grade experience they deserve. So this week’s challenge: What's your favorite kid's song, and what jobs do you think have a mental load as high as an elementary school teacher? Let me know in the comments! For those who want to support my classroom, check out my Amazon Wishlist linked below. Thank you so much to those who’ve helped so far!

This Week in Class, I learned the power of routines, purple glue sticks, and finding your place—literally and metaphorically. From creating slides to streamline morning, group, and goodbye routines to observing how systems empower students to self-manage, it was a week of growth. I even discovered how something as small as purple glue can make a big difference!I reflected on life's deeper lessons too—like realizing we each have our own 'spot' in line and that rushing to someone else's will only cause frustration.Listen to hear more insights, tips, and a challenge: What's your favorite school supply? TWIC - Week 3 - Igor Stravinsky
This week I learned:Its ok to not always finish everythingCurriculum NightIgor StravinskySo this week, I want to share a few key insights from my third week of teaching second grade. First off, I've got to give a shoutout to my secret weapon: the teacher next door. She’s been teaching for 14 years, and I’m learning so much from her. A lot of what my students enjoy about me probably comes from what I’ve picked up from her!One big lesson I’ve learned is that you won’t always finish everything in your lesson plan. There are constant interruptions—fire drills, kids getting picked up, or other disruptions—so flexibility is key. I’m considering condensing lessons into shorter chunks to account for these interruptions.Another major point is how important it is to build relationships with students. A veteran teacher told me that if students don’t trust you or care about what you’re saying, they won’t listen. Building that trust makes all the difference in how they receive the lessons. This week was also my first *Curriculum Night*, where I presented the structure of our day and the school’s expectations to the parents. I was nervous, but I found that as long as I was honest and sincere, the parents were receptive. Now that I’ve done it once, I have a good base for next year and can even improve it.Music plays a big role in my classroom environment, and I’m currently using Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue*, *chillhop*, and *binaural beats to help the kids focus. Funny enough, I tried playing Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite one day, thinking it would be relaxing, but it was way too intense for the kids!I’m also working on staying calm throughout the day. Teaching can get stressful, and I’ve noticed how wound up I can get, so I’m making a conscious effort to relax. Fridays are also turning into a day for fun projects, which the kids love. I’m realizing how important it is to have hands-on activities that keep them engaged and excited. If you’d like to support my class, I’ve attached my Amazon wish list, and you can also adopt my class by sending me a DM. I’m really enjoying this journey and can’t wait to keep sharing it with you all. I’m thinking about moving these reflections to a podcast platform, so stay tuned for that!My Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls...

TWIC - Week 2 - Who I'm really teaching
This Week in Class I learned:Who I'm really teachingPaying it forward at the printerMoving desks aroundIn this week’s episode of "This Week in Class," I’m reflecting on my second week as a first-year second-grade teacher! There’s a lot I’m figuring out, from classroom seating dynamics to discovering what it means to teach second graders who still have one foot in first grade. I share some of the strategies I’m learning to manage classroom behavior, the importance of adapting materials to fit where each student is on their journey, and how to make the math click with a bit of creativity. You'll also hear about my first experience booking a substitute (and what happens when they cancel last-minute), the surprisingly complex task of managing paperwork, and the lesson that sometimes the small gestures, like leaving extra sheets in the printer, are what make the daily grind more manageable. Plus, I talk about the invaluable support I’ve gotten from colleagues, especially in learning when to call for help. Finally, my classroom wish list is up and running, and I’m grateful for all the amazing support so far – every little bit truly helps as I build my teaching toolkit!Catch all this and more as I keep you updated on my journey. And if you’re an experienced teacher with tips or resources, please share them in the comments—I’d love to learn from you! TWIC - Week 1 - My First Week
This Week in Class...I learnedThe fist week of school is hard for everybody!!!Being a teacher has a lot of moving parts and teaching is not the only thing that we do Classroom routines are key! The education system is a necessary part of society on multiple levels In this video, I reflect on my first week as a second-grade teacher and the surprising challenges that come with it! From juggling administrative tasks to playing multiple roles—teacher, counselor, parent, and even bathroom monitor (lol!) there’s so much more to teaching than just the lessons. I share how I’m learning to set up systems and routines to manage my class, while also being shocked by just how exhausting (but rewarding) it can be. I also talk about worthiness, the importance of community support, and why teachers are so underappreciated despite playing a crucial role in shaping society.
