    Balance Is A Lie

So I truly believe the idea of balance is a lie. Its something many would like to achieve yet I dont think its something we can do in this modern world. I wish that I am able to tell my kids that they can find balance, or dad is living a balanced life but in reality its not going to happen, and I doubt it will ever be. In the episode I cover things about how I view balance , why do people like to go hard and find it difficult to slow down (like kids), and why taking time off is so hard to do yet we know its beneficial. Enjoy. Here are 10 books I think you should read especially if you are a young adult trying to make sense of life right now https://go.iamchoong.com/book-listI send out 1 weekly email a week on a Wednesday covering topics from mindset, life, nutrition and training. I Took A Year Off (Unintentionally)

So a lot has happened over the last year since the last episode came out in June. Thankfully while I did , intend to throw in the towel in this podcasting escapade, I came to realise why I started it in the first place, and I would like to share just some quick insights and updates on the last year since I last recorded an episode. I send out 1 weekly email a week on a Wednesday covering topics from mindset, life, nutrition and trianing. Reflecting on Episode 18 with Sarah Summers

What a cool chat with Sarah! I could sit back and process my conversation with her after a few days. Hearing it from the point of view of a parent whose kid is on the other side of the world helps to put some things into perspective regarding my situation with my parents and what could be going through their minds. It was also interesting to hear her talk about her experience as a surrogate mother, and something that struck me after the conversation was that not a lot of people would consider that as a way of helping others; many who do tend to view it as a financial gain first but in Sarah's case it was very much a case of trying to be as helpful as possible. I admire her in that regard. Episode 18 With Sarah Summers

Sarah has such a unique story, and I am so glad we cross paths to allow me to gain some insight on what it is like to be ‘on the other side’ of the coin when it comes to being a parent, where you have a child that is studying in a completely different country. I was very much (and still am) that child to my parents, and of course, I have my views, but it was terrific to get a perspective from someone (Sarah) who has her child currently studying in Japan. All this while doing her Masters at the University of Illinois and being a coach. In addition, Sarah also has a fantastic story about being a surrogate mother, and she goes into detail on some of the points to consider before going down the path and how she has decided to still keep in touch with the child and the family till this very day. Reflecting on Episode 17 with Mike Mahaffey

They say as you grow older, your views change, and in the case of Mike, that was the vibe I was getting. Honestly, I give all the credit to him because for someone who might be old, being receptive to change is important, especially as a parent, and always being able to adapt to the situation. The conversation opened up my eyes to see that we need to ensure we let our children be who they want to be, but even as parents, we sometimes need to be open to exploring new things for ourselves, be it a new hobby, going into therapy or just talking to someone about your feelings (the big F word) but also dont force someone to change unless if they are ready emotionally to do so. Episode 17 with Mike Mahaffey

I had the pleasure of speaking to none other than the old bastard himself, Mr Mike Mahaffery. Mike and I connected via a little mutual group called BJJ Mental Models. While he graciously stroked my ego a couple of times on my BJJ skill (thanks, Mike), Mike gave me a few gems of wisdom as a father himself, having kids who are adults who mostly have their own interests and hobbies. He reinforces the idea that at the end of the day, kids will grow up into adults of their own, and its essential always to acknowledge that as a parent. Aside from being a BJJ Black Belt, Mike also shared some of his experiences, being a Gen X , on his views on therapy and why and how parents should look into it more often even if you are of the so called 'older generation'. Reflecting on Episode 16 with Gerry Lynch

So, if you did catch this episode, it was recorded a few weeks after Marcus was born. And boy, oh boy, life is different! I took a few things speaking to Gerry, and I had a lot of time to reflect on some of the things I would try to do with my kids as they grow older. It's always going to be a fine line on 'baby-ing' them VS letting them learn from mistakes. I think one of the things that I am starting to realize with parents who end up having kids who grow up to be independent is that it is easy for parents to step in and help, it is a lot harder, as Gerry suggested, NOT to try to help. Let them make those mistakes, communicate openly, and love them. You can find Gerry on LinkedIn here https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrylynch/ My IG https://www.instagram.com/i_am_choong/

    Episode 16 with Gerry Lynch

I had the pleasure of speaking to Gerry Lynch, a jack of all trades but primarily at this point, a great business coach and even greater father to his children (biological and stepson). For context and to set this episode up, I have been working with Gerry and his wife as their coach, and I know how good their family dynamics are. It's fantastic to get some fatherly advice and general good mindset approaches when running a small business while ensuring I (and other parents alike) can also spend time with the family. Reflecting on Episode 15 with Cliff Harvey

Based on my guess (which tends not always to be accurate lol) by the time this airs, we should have Marcus and I can imagine the chaos observed at home. While recording and doing this episode, Cliff has greatly reminded me that to be the most present parent you can be, it's vital always to spend time just to calm your mind with things like yoga. He also gave a fascinating perspective, which was that while being an older parent, there are a lot of upsides to things which ultimately tend to lead to him being able to spend more time with his kids. And while I am certainly in no position to take that advice on board anymore (once you become a parent, you cant go back lol) I do think that the lessons I took from Cliff is something I wish to pass on to others as well as my kids. Episode 15 with Cliff Harvey

Woohoo, another podcast in the books. Let's see how long you boys can keep this up because, by the time this comes out, Marcus will likely be tearing up the house with Henry. I have the pleasure of chatting with Cliff about what life will be like for me when we go from a one-kid to a two-kid household. It's cool to chat with Cliff outside of what we usually discuss at work: nutrition and the best ways to teach and train nutritionists. Its nice to get his take on his experience going from one kid to two. From the present, how to ensure you and your partner pair up on tasks, as well as a discussion on when should, at least for a man, look to start a family? Reflecting on Episode 14 with Pete Tansley

It is always great to reconnect with old friends, and in this case, reconnecting with my first-ever mentor, Pete shed light on how far we both have come. When I first worked with Pete, this would have been when his kids were still young and in primary school, and back then (as Pete would say), being naive, I never really knew what parenthood was like. It's pretty interesting to sit back now and edit/listen to the conversation that we had on the previous episode, which reinforced an idea in my head as to where I ultimately want to be in terms of how I want to obtain a stable financial situation for my family, but also making sure I am a role model for my kids. It was a great chat, and once a mentor, always a mentor, and it did feel like I could pick his brains on certain touchy subjects like divorce and how kids deal with things as they grow up, which is pretty cool to hear from his end. Episode 14 with Pete Tansley

I had the pleasure of speaking to my first-ever mentor, Pete Tansley. We go way back to 2018/201,9 when he was the first ever mentor/coach I hired outside of the context of sport-specific and nutrition training. Back then, I knew Pete had twins, and he shared his stories about being a father and a business owner. It feels like things have come full circle, and I am asking for his thoughts on parenthood so far. From topics like being present, how to ensure you take care of yourself first, ways to do deep work, and the struggles of what it was really like when you find out you have twins, only to have your business come crashing down and heading into a divorce. It was such a great chat, and I had a lot to think about along the lines of trying my best to do high-quality work so that I have more time to spend with the children before they go on and have their interests. Reflecting on Episode 13 with Newton Cheng

Whew! What an episode! I sincerely thank Newton for being so open to chat about his family, especially in light of recent events. There are many takeaways from our conversation, but primarily, we reached an agreement on a few things that can significantly benefit one's mental health as a parent: Ensure you have a community behind you, whether big or small, always take time to process your emotions, and no matter what cards life deals you, keep playing the game. Thank you again for the chat. From our family to yours, we wish you the best and a speedy recovery for the young one! Episode 13 with Newton Cheng

On today's podcast episode, I have none other than Newton Cheng on the show. While this could have turned into a podcast about powerlifting and work, Newton and his family received some dire news during the 2024 holiday season with one of his daughters being diagnosed with Leukemia. Since then, this is the first time he has spoken publicly about his experience in an interview/podcast setting. For those who know Newton, outside of his strength accolades, he is also a big advocate for speaking out about mental health, rightfully so; he also works as the director of health and performance at Google. This is a situation that I do not wish upon anyone; however,r being able to speak to Newton was eye-opening for me to at least get a glimpse of how one navigates through a situation that he would not have imagined would have happened, yet it did. Again,I cannot thank Newton enough for taking the time out to speak to me and giving me some very insightful ways to look at life and how to play the cards you are dealt with. Reflecting on Episode 12 with Mickey Kilmartin

Woohoo! I'm unsure where we stand regarding whether Marcus is here. However, my chat with Mickey highlighted some things for me. As someone who likes the idea of being as competitive as possible as an athlete (if you consider powerlifting a sport, lol), I've started to adopt a mindset shift. I try to view parenting itself as a bit of a competition, and, as corny as it sounds, I aim to compete with myself daily to be the best parent I can be. Another significant takeaway was the idea of being fit and healthy for your kids. I say this repeatedly: Before having kids, you might have an excuse, but after having kids, if you're not healthy, your kids will end up the same or worse because they will follow your lead. Episode 12 with Mickey Kilmartin

In today's episode, I had the pleasure to speak to Mickey, who is deep into the thick of things when wrangling not just an 8-month-old but two other older children. Despite all of the craziness AND being a teacher and a coach himself, he still is able to be the 'fit dad' around his little outcove of homes and strives to show up as the best version of himself as he can be. We covered topics like why is it important to stay healthy as a father, how can we transition from having a competitive mindset in sport to being a parent that shows up for the family first and much more. Reflecting on Episode 11 with Lily Wheels

Man, when I realize this, I am not sure where life is at the moment but the chat with Lily did help me to put things into perspective as Clare and I gear up to welcome our second kid into the world (her mostly, I just hang around lol). But for those who tuned in to the previous podcast as well as if you spoke to me over the last two months, the primary mental hurdle I started to develop since December was that I do not want my child to be at risk of anything, especially before he can experience the world. I also reflected on the potential ‘rite of passage’ for a mom at the start of this episode (don't kill me here; I would love to hear your thoughts, mums out there) and many more. Episode 11 with Lily Wheels

What a great chat with Lily, and it certainly sets abit of a tone for me in addressing some concerns we have with having a generally smaller baby. We discussed how quickly Lily could rebound back, but more importantly, on the mental side of being put under GA due to complications and how she is still trying to work through things mentally. Despite all of the challenges as well Lily can pivot to help other mothers coming out of post-partum as well as build a community to support one another because no one can truly prepare you for what happens when you become a mom, so she wanted to create something special for the community and support anyone who needs help. Reflecting on Episode 10 with Kelly Drummond

Woohoo, that is another episode, which means it is another week closer to Marcus being born. This week I had some time to reflect on the conversation I had with Kelly, and it was not a conversation I initially thought would go down, but it was a conversation that I value a lot in hindsight. From the safety of kids to understanding the mindset and some challenges around being the stepmom in the kid(s) life, it gave me a whole new perspective on things, and there were, while controversial, some things that I will personally take on board especially when two kids are coming along! This was a great episode with Kelly Drummond, powerlifter turned strongwoman and a mother of two. There were some great takeaways from the chat about how to build a bond between your kids being a step-parent and have them accept her as part of the family. We also talked about some of her hot takes on parenting and controversial stances that everyone should at least be open to the idea that there is no right way to parent children. Reflecting on Episode 9 with Julianne Taylor

Dang, what an incredible episode. Honestly, I approached this conversation with an open mind, as I had no idea how it would go. But Julliane is such a fantastic person and a fantastic parent. She gave me what I felt was like a 1:1 coaching call on how to be a parent, lol. She opened up my eyes to the fact that, despite how the family household came to be, parenting has some similarities at the end of the day! While all kids are different, it opened my eyes to the fact that it's not about how the kids come about but about how you love them as a parent. This was an incredible insight into adoption. Julianne was graciously open to sharing some of her insights with me on how she and her husband ended up with two wonderful adopted kids and some of the considerations they had to consider when it comes to adoption. While not too dissimilar to regular parenting, it opened my eyes to how the adoption process works and what happens in the family post-adoption, such as teaching the children a new language and ultimately fostering them into awesome adults, as Julianne and her husband did. Reflecting on Episode 8 with Elaine Wynn

This was a great chat with someone who was very far along the parenting journey, and while it would seem on paper Elaine is old, one thing that stuck with me was that she is very youthful at heart. Upon reflection, I think most parents would want to strive to be like Elaine, be active, and still be able to go toe-to-toe with their kids and grandkids. But something she also mentioned, which stuck, was the fact that, at times you just gotta suck it up. There is no easy way in life at times; you just have to grit through it, and this conversation holds many lessons for me to take on board for the future parent in me. Episode 8 With Elaine Wynn

This was such a fun-filled episode looking at life itself through the lens of someone who would seem to have already figured out (kids and grandkids) yet still putting herself in a position to keep pushing herself to do more new and fun things. Elaine, AKA Juijitsu Grandma, is showing the world that while parenting can be over (for the most part, as she still has to parent a few 50-year-old children,n haha) , its essential always to stay a kid at heart and always be willing to stay active and pursue fun things as we enter our golden years. Reflecting on Episode 7 with Steve Kwan

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season so far, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support I have been getting so far with the podcast. I never thought I would be 14-15 episodes in its wild! And on today's FINAL reflective episode for the year, I reflected on the chat I I had with Steve and how BJJ has opened my eyes to how best to get your kid involved in an activity or, in some cases, make sure how to be fluid around a problem in life, and how kids would want to do things on what parents do from actions to bad habits. Episode 7 with Steve Kwan

Well, I had to wait till Christmas week to release this one because, honestly, I was a little starstruck that Steve even said to a podcast interview with me. For those who don't know, Steve Kwan (the more successful Kwan) runs an excellent online podcast dedicated to helping people get into and improve at Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ), which is truly one of a kind. As you can imagine, I am already part of this sport/hobby. In our conversation, we discussed some parallels between BJJ and how that translates to parenthood, coaching kids, and getting his kid interested in the sport. We also spoke about my problems and the fear of being unable to do something I like when my second one comes along. As always, Steve had some words of wisdom to back up his personal experience of taking extensive time off from the mats for personal reasons. Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope you enjoyed this conversation. Hopefully, it also (if you are not already) sparked some interest in you as a parent to start picking up BJJ as a hobby. Reflecting on Episode 6 with Adam Renall

This was such a good episode, and the chat with Adam gave me a lot of perspectives and some ideas on how to manage my expectations, sacrifices, and much more when our second comes along in March 2025. A big thing that I I took away from it all, and reflecting on other parents I know of, is that Adam and his wife pride themselves on making sure they can spend as much time as possible with their kids, so ensuring they structure work around their kids and not the other way around. Adam also asked me a question about my most significant takeaway since becoming a parent, and that question stumped me, but oh man, its so cool to reflect on is and how I can really give 0 Fs these days on what people think. Episode 6 with Adam Renall

I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Adam. Adam is a father of two, and he has a couple of things to add when it comes to a more modern style of parenting and juggling family life with work. We looked at how best he and his wife could structure their work weeks to spend as much time with their children as possible and what sacrifices he had to make in his coaching business, like pulling big work days to make it all happen. We also took a deeper dive into how coaching (or the art of coaching) has a lot of transferable traits when it comes to parenting as well, and there was a point in the conversation that was very meaningful for me when Adam talked about having his second child and how he was able to maneuver around that. Reflecting on Episode 5 with Naomi Page

Man this episode was one that really got me thinking hard on some topics, mainly around guilt. Parent guilt was something that really was something that I really highlighted to myself when I had the conversation with Naomi and how I feel like I am not doing enough, despite on paper at least, people telling me I am doing alot. And also something about support systems and leaning on those who are willing to help, to help out. But also having this personal thing in my head that I want my kids to be like me, yet I know that is not how it should be. Episode 5 with Naomi Page

In this episode, I had the pleasure to sit down (on a Saturday, as all parents do) and had a few good back-and-forths with Naomi. She is a parent of one. However, she is a hustler, not only working a 9-5 but also having her own very cool personal training studio tailored for parents and being child-friendly. We talked about some struggles of being a single parent and ensuring that we always rely on help where and when possible, as well as some of the struggles of just being a parent. At the same time, it can sometimes seem significant on the outside, but it's refreshing to hear from others that parenting is hard and can be downright overwhelming. Reflecting on Episode 4 with Jenny

Oh, what a great chat I had with Jenny. During my chat with her, I will not lie. My mind was all over the place because my brain decided to go in multiple directions and come up with multiple scenarios of having more than one kid in the house, from hobbies to technology. And definitely, there were a few things I reflected hard on, especially not feeling that guilt to take time out for myself as well. It's great to know that there is an end (good or bad?) to all the newborn-toddler stages, but it would also seem that she has really drilled home the idea that I should really enjoy the time now as it's not something I will ever get back. Episode 4 with Jenny

In this episode, I had an excellent opportunity to speak to Jenny, a mother of many kids (including her cats!). I asked her a few questions about her parenting style and how she can foster a good relationship with all her children. There were a couple of really critical moments in our conversation, such as how she can ensure technology and social media are being monitored but also accepted in the family, what are some small things that mothers really appreciate others would do (but never really say!) as well as some really good tips for me on how to manage time for herself while not feeling guilty about it. I loved the conversation and hope you will remove a few things from it, too. Reflecting on Episode 3 with Hayden Pritchard

A few thoughts came to mind after my chat with Hayden. The most important thing I learned from it is that you have to be very flexible in your approach to life as a whole, especially after having 1-2 or more kid(s). It can also be challenging to ‘expect’ certain things regarding parenting. You can have all the ‘education and tools’ at your disposal, but when push comes to shove and the nuclear bomb is dropped, it's not gonna be as you expect. In saying that, experience also plays a huge factor. From what I gathered from Hayden, there are some things that you will likely do a bit better the second time because you already had that firsthand experience. Episode 3 with Hayden Pritchard

So, in today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Hayden Pritchard; he does not like to use the title "Doctor" as much, but he is an intelligent dude. He is currently a father of two, and in the episode, we talked about a couple of key points, such as how flexibility when it comes to life and training really changed after becoming a parent and the differences between his two kids when it's bedtime. We also discussed how to choose and prioritize as a parent and how learning the theory is cool, but applying what you know is completely different. Reflecting on Episode 2 with Dean Williams

Today's reflective episode it is a pretty big one as we, as a family, start to plan the next phase of our lives, looking forward to having a second kiddo. There are a lot of tips that Dean shared with me, which I will really look to take on board, including things like who to prioritize first, how to communicate effectively among the entire family, and also how I might look to share my mental health struggles with my kids, as Dean does. Episode 2 with Dean Williams

So, in today's episode, I spoke to Dean, a father of two (soon to be three!) who owns a fantastic personal training business with multiple studios across Auckland geared to help busy professionals stay healthy and fit. On top of being a super busy parent and the CEO of a very fast-expanding business, it was interesting to chat with Dean to pick out a few things from his parenting style that I will take on board when parenting my kids. Things like how to communicate effectively and how communication plays a significant role in parenting and running a vast business. Check out the links below if you want to support Dean and me. Reflecting on Episode 1 with Tim Halim

On this reflective episode, I kind of ramble (and hopefully, in future episodes, I do less of) on my thoughts after I spoke with Tim. A couple of key topics that came up were: Career and the sacrifices one might have to make ends meet, how to say no to your kids, and why I think setting an example works in my mind. Episode 1 with Tim Halim

So, in today's episode, I spoke to Tim, a father of two who, as of the date of the release of this episode, is one week away from competing in the World Classic Masters Powerlifting Championships. Tim has had many ups and downs as a parent thus far while still being able to compete internationally, which is a remarkable feat. He has shed some critical insights with me, which I hope to be able to undertake and apply to my own situation when the time comes as my kid grows older. Pilot Eposide

All right, here we go! Another (second, really) attempt at doing a podcast show. This time, I am taking a different approach. I work in the health and fitness industry, but this podcast isn't about health and fitness; it's more of a platform to ask questions about parenting, growing up alongside one's children, and what lessons I can learn. I became a dad in 2023, and it's been a crazy ride. I believe every parent has different ways of parenting their children, so I will attempt to bring some guests on to ask them about their journey thus far and do some episodes reflecting on the conversations. Hopefully, you enjoy the show!
