Two Short Catechisms

First published in 1645, these Catechisms were crafted by Dr. Owen while he served the parish of Fordham in Essex, dedicating himself to the spiritual growth of his community through diligent house-to-house catechizing. Designed to enhance his teaching efforts, “The Lesser Catechism” targets children, while “The Greater” is aimed at those more advanced in their faith. These works are primarily doctrinal, intended to reinforce key Christian principles. Dr. Owen envisioned expanding this collection with additional teachings on the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and core articles of the Creed, though that vision remained unfulfilled. This volume encapsulates Owen’s teachings on “the Principles of the Doctrine of Christ,” showcasing his unwavering commitment to the essential doctrines of the Gospel throughout his ministry.
