Vegans Talking Shit
by The Tofu Trio
Vegans are a controversial, much-maligned group, but we're all just regular human beings who live, love, and laugh. And man, can we talk shit. Join Jon, Vanessa, and Joey as we talk shit about what it's like to be vegan. Every week, we'll be talking shit about a different topic related to living a vegan lifestyle; the good, the bad, and the ugly. But since we seem to be completely incapable of staying on topic, we also talk shit about music, movies, comic books, and anything else that might come up during the conversation. So tune in to Vegans Talking Shit, available weekly on Apple Podcasts, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Jon and Vanessa Go to Japan
Even though Vanessa is in Brazil, The Tofu Trio still managed to get together to record a new episode. Vanessa brought along her niece Livia, but since she doesn't speak much English, Livia's contribution is pretty much limited to hello and goodbye. In fact, you actually hear more from Joey's dog Khaleesi than you do from Livia. Jon and Vanessa dive deep into their recent trip to Japan, where they were surprised to learn that the country isn't very vegan friendly. Jon also describes the high-tech toilets in Japan, which completely makes Joey’s day because he still possesses the sense of humor of a five year old. It's a wild international ride full of language barriers, dietary struggles, and way more bathroom talk than anyone could expect or want.If you're interested in buying the fancy $400 bidet attachment that Jon bought on Amazon, visit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FCTR1Y75?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1. Non-Vegan Voices: AJ
With Jon and Vanessa out of commission, Joey delivers another Non-Vegan Voices episode, this time featuring his equally introverted and socially awkward friend AJ. They kick off the show with their friendship origin story and explain how a single "man date" sealed their fate as geek buds. AJ recalls his supporting role during Joey's journey into veganism before the guys pivot to discussing AI and ChatGPT. After laughing about how they might actually be related, Joey gives AJ the floor to defend himself against vegans who claim that non-vegans can't truly love animals. Naturally, they take a massive detour to talk about comic books, including their trip to the comic shop on Superman Day. Finally, they close out the show by drooling over an upcoming meal at a favorite restaurant. The episode is a "blistering masterpiece" full of food conversations, comic book talk, and unscripted background noises from Joey’s lovable English Bulldog, Khaleesi. It's a completely different kind of episode, yet it's also exactly like every other episode.Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! Diversion: Top 10 Most Underappreciated Films
Busy schedules prevented The Tofu Trio from getting together, and without Jon and Vanessa to keep him in line, Joey forces a self-described filler episode onto his listeners and viewers where he lists his top 10 most underappreciated films. Joey's taste in movies may be questionable, but one thing that's not in question is that he's badly in need of a thesaurus. My God, does he know any adjectives other than "great"? Can Vegan Movies Make a Difference?
Last week, The Tofu Trio went a little long while discussing the vegan community. In a move that surprised absolutely nobody, they soon abandoned the topic and began discussing whether or not movies and documentaries can actually change hearts and minds, hence this episode. Joey explains how movies and TV shows often serve as educational material, noting that the HBO series "Watchmen" taught him more about the 1921 Tulsa Massacre than he ever learned in a classroom. Vanessa pivots back to the original theme by sharing the awkward ways being part of the vegan community has impacted her relationships in other communities. Jon weighs in with his classic origin story about how the documentary "The Game Changers" turned him vegan. To wrap things up, the group discusses the possibility of inviting vegan activist Gary Yourofsky back to the show.Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! Vegan Community
The Tofu Trio revisits a topic they've touched on several times before which is the importance of vegan community. They explore why humans crave a sense of belonging whether it involves plant-based living, hockey rinks, or comic book shops. The group tackles the tired stereotype that all vegans are pale white hippies by highlighting the actual diversity of the movement across race, class, and political lines. This leads to a lively discussion about Republican vegans and Vanessa's take on why neither political party is actually doing favors for the animals. Jon then asks Joey if he'd ever vote for a vegan Republican, and Joey's answer is so incendiary that the editor had to reach for the bleep button. Oh boy. They wrap up the political talk by contemplating whether a vegan candidate could actually win a major election in this meat-obsessed country. After a quick plug for the Shopify store, the trio concludes the show by weighing the pros and cons of public protests and whether they truly help the cause. It's a spirited episode that proves The Tofu Trio can find plenty of common ground even when the conversation gets spicy.Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! Sgt. Vegan: Bravo
At ease, soldier! The Tofu Trio is back to continue their conversation with Sgt. Vegan, Bill Muir. As the debriefing continues, Sgt. Vegan gives the intel on his three published books and offers a preview of what his fourth book might look like. Jon asks the sergeant if he has an ancestral claim to Muir Woods before Joey leads the conversation into a mosh pit of heavy metal, punk, and hip hop. Vanessa eventually steers the group back to veganism, which leads the sergeant to reflect on his original dream of owning a vegan restaurant and the pivot that led him to become a registered nurse instead. The episode also covers his possible speaking tour in the northeastern United States, and his brother who shares the vegan mission. Bill wraps things up by sharing why he is so optimistic about the next generation of plant-based advocates. Sgt. Vegan: Alpha
The Tofu Trio is reporting for duty! In the first installment of this two-part episode, the team welcomes Sgt. Vegan. Known officially as Bill Muir, Sgt. Vegan is a combat veteran and martial artist who defies many stereotypes held by non-vegans. He's also a chef, author, musician, and registered nurse. Clearly, his accomplishments are extensive. After The Tofu Trio addresses a few technical glitches (again), Sgt. Vegan shares his vegan origin story that dates back to August 1992. He describes the struggle of being vegan at a time when many had never even heard the word, a challenge made more difficult during his time in the Army, particularly with the lack of plant-based options in basic training. The conversation shifts as Jon discusses his upcoming trip to Japan with Vanessa, prompting Sgt. Vegan to reminisce about his time living in that country. He discusses his deep love for Japan and his journey toward learning the language. Joey then brings up anime, leading Sgt. Vegan to discuss his affinity for some of the 90s classics. The dialogue then takes a bizarre turn into the world of hentai, though thankfully, that segment is brief. The group eventually veers into a "Star Wars" discussion before lamenting some of the issues within Florida. Finally, Vanessa steers the conversation back to Japan, where Sgt. Vegan provides essential travel tips and hacks for the journey. A massive amount of ground is covered in this episode, but that's literally only half of the story! The Shopify Store is Open!
In a chaotic, messy episode complete with technical issues, things falling over, and interruptions from companion animals, The Tofu Trio announces that the official Vegans Talking Shit Shopify store is open for business! But first, Joey predictably hijacks the mic to recount his adventures at MegaCon, a massive comic book convention in Orlando, Florida. While dodging cosplayers at the con, he discovered Here Comes Calico, a comic book featuring the world's first vegan antihero, who treats animal abusers with a level of extreme vengeance that would even make The Punisher cringe. Once the comic book talk settles, the gang finally gets to the actual point of this episode: the merch! If you'd like some kickass Vegans Talking Shit merchandise, such as t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs and more, head on over to https://vegans-talking-shit.myshopify.com. For the love of all that is holy, please go buy something so these people can finally get the validation they so desperately crave! After plugging their Shopify store, the conversation takes a sharp turn toward Vanessa's home country of Brazil, and she reveals that a beloved Brazilian icon is vegan. The show closes with a discussion about a recent survey crowning Brazil as the happiest country on Earth, with Jon offering his theories as to why Brazilians are significantly more joyful than people who live in the United States.Be sure to tune in next week for an interview with Sgt. The 2026 Potluck Brunch, Part Two
We're diving back into the beautiful chaos for the second half of The Tofu Trio's inaugural Vegans Talking Shit Potluck Brunch. Joey keeps the party moving while battling the noise that only a crowded vegan gathering can provide. First at bat is Elvera the Vegan Realtor, who talks about her role in helping to open local plant-based businesses and her past life as a co-host of a different provocatively named vegan podcast. She and Joey find common ground in the dietary irony of being vegans who don't actually like vegetables, and then commiserate over the struggle of dealing with restaurant staff who don't know what the word "vegan" means. Then friend of the show Brad steps to the plate. After he and Joey spend some time laughing at their uncanny resemblance, they revisit Brad's greatest hits as a recurring guest before falling down a rabbit hole of movie talk and the weird "what-ifs" of AI-generated cinema. Finally, the real MVP of the day, Vanessa, brings it all home. She immediately humbles Joey by pointing out that the guests could have actually been wearing the microphones rather than holding them like amateurs. After making Joey look like an idiot, she explains her Brazilian carrot cake, which tasted amazing despite a suspicious lack of carrot flavor. Then they reveal the big news: a Shopify store is officially in the works so you can finally snag some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! They wrap up the day with a deep dive into figure skating and coffee, finally putting a lid on the first-ever Vegans Talking Shit Potluck Brunch.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. The 2026 Potluck Brunch, Part One
The Tofu Trio hosted their first Vegans Talking Shit Potluck Brunch, and Joey made the questionable decision to record an episode in the middle of the chaos. Whether or not this was a good idea is up for debate, but it certainly made for some delightfully shitty audio! On the plus side, if you like your podcasting raw, unique, and at times hard to understand, you're in the right place. In part one of this two-part extravaganza, Joey sits down with fellow junk-food vegan, Stephanie, to discuss the dark ages of being plant-based in mid-2000s Lincoln, Nebraska, and why that region supports more vegans and vegetarians than one might think. They also dive into the science-fiction reality of lab-grown meat. Long-time friend of the show Virginia finally makes her video debut! She shares her origin story—shouting out Gary Yourofsky's influence—and reflects on her transition to veganism. She and Joey then dissect the cultural stranglehold Publix has on Florida and the Southeastern United States before Virginia pivots to her fascinatingly eclectic career in the makeup industry. Finally, Jon joins the show. As per tradition, when Jon and Joey get together, the vegan part of the podcast goes entirely out the window. They discuss Jon's role as one of the event hosts, though we all know Vanessa did most of the heavy lifting. They also cover pickleball, and the ongoing campaign by Jon and Vanessa to get Joey out on the court with them. As the conversation comes to an end, the boys go over the wildly different outcomes of their recent adventures in online sports betting. Tune in next week for three new guests and even more shitty audio!Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Main podcast image artwork by Diego Orellana. Iguanas and Other Invasive Species
In this pint-sized episode of Vegans Talking Shit, Jon remains out enjoying his hockey day, so once again, it's The Tofu Trio minus one. After an awkward introduction needlessly explaining that this is the second half of a single recording split into two different topics, Joey and Vanessa begin discussing iguanas and other invasive species. They chat about the low IQ of iguanas and the bizarre phenomenon of them falling from trees during the rare South Florida cold snap. The conversation turns to the controversial law allowing people to kill iguanas in Florida. Vanessa gets emotional sharing how she tried to save several frozen iguanas near her building only to learn that someone had begun killing them, leading Joey to discuss the irony of labeling a species "invasive" when humans brought them there in the first place. As the show closes, Joey gets a little too excited about his ability to split the recording into two separate topics, resulting in some audible "thinking out loud" about posting dates and voting deadlines. It’s an awkward hello and a fumbled goodbye, but the conversation in between might actually be worth the listen.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Second-Hand Leather
Since it's a hockey day for Jon, this episode features The Tofu Trio minus one. Joey and Vanessa discuss a topic suggested by a listener: Is it actually okay for vegans to wear second-hand leather or other used animal-derived clothing? Before diving in, Vanessa reviews the new Beyond Immerse protein drinks from Beyond Meat. Joey then explains why he would never wear leather under any circumstances, while Vanessa offers a more nuanced take, including the fate of the leather handbag collection she owned prior to going vegan. In a true podcast miracle, Joey stays on topic the entire time. Instead, it's Vanessa who veers off to discuss what happens to iguanas in Florida. The discussion quickly shifts from lizards to the macabre, as Joey details the horrors of the fur industry and the footage shown in the harrowing documentary "Earthlings," followed by Vanessa's account of a visit to an animal sanctuary that functioned more like a prison for the animals in its care. To lighten the mood, Vanessa suggests returning to the topic of Florida iguanas, but you'll have to tune in next week to hear that conversation.Today is the last day to vote for Vegans Talking Shit for Best Vegan Podcast in the 2026 VegNews Veggie Awards! Owning a Vegan Restaurant
In a very special episode of Vegans Talking Shit, The Tofu Trio welcomes Denis Soukhanov, who co-owns Zen Mystery—an organic lounge, café, and cultural center—with his wife. Denis shares his personal journey to veganism, the vision behind his strictly organic mission, and how his business survived the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the conversation continues, Joey asks Denis if he would ever consider adding meat to the menu to stay afloat—a move some struggling vegan restaurants have made—while Jon and Denis discuss the broader future of plant-based dining. For her part, Vanessa can't stop talking about the awesomeness of the Zen Mystery potato salad. To wrap up the show, Denis reveals the origin of the Zen Mystery name and highlights several new menu items. Just as the episode concludes, Jon and Vanessa's cat, Bob, makes his presence known by causing a glitch in the video. Bonus Episode - Art That Makes You Rethink Your Dinner
The boys sit out this bonus episode as Vanessa is joined by artist, musician, and author Nancy Illman. Returning for her second appearance (previously appearing in Episode 45, Voices from the Vegan Cruise: Holly & Nancy), Nancy joins Vanessa for a conversation about their lives and the shared experience of being vegan in a non-vegan world. The highlight of this episode is the personal tour of Nancy's vibrant, creative home, which is an art piece in its own right. We strongly recommend watching the video version, as her home has to be seen to be believed. Nancy also shares how she weaves veganism into her artwork. Afterward, the two friends dive into the reality of family dynamics as a vegan, the addictive nature of cheese, and why Medjool dates are the ultimate transition food for cutting out processed sugars and baked goods. To close, Vanessa shares her dream of spending more time in Brazil and the steps she and Jon are taking to make that happen. To book a tour of Nancy's local public-facing murals in Takoma Park, Maryland, visit https://nancyillman.com/ or email [email protected] Tofu Trio is proud to announce that Vegans Talking Shit has been nominated for Best Vegan Podcast in the VegNews Veggie Awards! Vote for Vegans Talking Shit!
In an episode that's devoid of a real topic, The Tofu Trio drops all pretenses to shamelessly beg for listener support. The big news? Vegans Talking Shit has been nominated for Best Vegan Podcast in the VegNews Veggie Awards! WOO-HOO! After speculating on how the show actually landed a nomination, the conversation predictably veers off the rails. Joey gushes over the brilliant TV series "Kevin Can F*ck Himself," Vanessa explains why she's wearing a vintage Brazil soccer jersey, and Jon pivots to a heartfelt plea for cat adoption. The wheels come off entirely as the trio inexplicably dives into the Imperial vs. Metric system, the audacity of using "America" to describe just the United States, and the ridiculousness of the "Gulf of America." As the show concludes, Joey tries to talk to Jon about "The Smashing Machine," but Vanessa mercifully pulls the plug before things get too heavy.Help The Tofu Trio take home the trophy! Non-Vegan Voices: Shain
With Jon and Vanessa in Brazil, Joey unleashes another Non-Vegan Voices episode, this time with his Gen Z friend Shain, a walking and talking comic book encyclopedia. After an origin story of their friendship, Joey attempts to dive right into the world of superheroes, but Shain effectively pulls a "Vanessa," keeping the show anchored to its plant-based roots. Shain has to do this several times throughout the episode, as Joey seems hellbent on focusing primarily on comic books. As they continue, Shain discusses being the son of Jamaican immigrants and the grandson of a Rastafarian, prompting Joey to take a sharp left turn into his dating history with a Chinese-Jamaican woman and the "delicacy" known as Goat Head Soup. The banter continues as Shain describes the short documentary he made at the comic book store and why Joey isn't in it. They then geek out over comic books written by filmmaker and noted vegan Kevin Smith, DC's hugely successful Absolute Universe, and the burning question of whether or not Absolute Batman kills people. Before heading to a feast at Vegan Tierra, the two close out the show discussing "cupcake vegans," vegan cupcakes, and chocolate. Clearly, they were hungry!Watch Shain's short documentary, "Comics Are Cool: Please Read Them":https://youtu.be/ZxUmBstrE6o?si=95CN9-ohveN7Pl-CRead Shain's debut as a comic book writer, "Meat":https://globalcomix.com/read/17b132e9-01b8-417f-b479-ad2ee7b1bd8d/1Trigger Warning: Shain's comic book is extremely graphic and contains animal cruelty, child abuse, gratuitous violence, and gore. Are Vegans Gay?, Part Two
After clumsily handling the topic in part one, The Tofu Trio spends the second half of this two-part episode practically ignoring it altogether. Instead, they dive into niche religions like Jainism, the Hare Krishna movement, and Satanism. Eventually, Jon brings up the movie "Time Bandits," only to then confuse "The Time Machine" with "Time After Time." Vanessa then previews an upcoming trip to Brazil, and Joey reminisces about his time volunteering at farm sanctuaries, which includes his revelation that he found joy in shoveling poop. Are Vegans Gay?, Part One
With all the subtlety and sensitivity of a drunk ape wielding a sledgehammer, The Tofu Trio tackles the provocative (and, let's be honest, shamelessly clickbaity) question posed in today's title. In part one of a two-part episode, the group discusses the common outsider perception that a disproportionate number of vegans are gay, and the various reasons why that stereotype exists. Their clunky conversation covers, among other things, the demographics of Wilton Manors, the unsubstantiated fear that soy makes men feminine, and some of the other classic plant-based misconceptions. True to form, about half the episode is a complete detour: Vanessa unlocks the secrets of "Blue Zones" like Loma Linda, CA, Jon defends his preference for cats over dogs, and Joey launches into a passionate, slightly tragic deep dive on why his favorite dog breed, the English Bulldog, should no longer be bred.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Is It Possible To Be 100% Vegan?, Part Two
The Tofu Trio continues their discussion about whether or not it's possible to be 100% vegan in the finale of their two-part episode. Having already established in part one that being 100% vegan is virtually impossible in the modern world, they provide a few more sobering examples of why that is. Once they finish crushing vegan dreams of purity, they dive into the greasy world of beef tallow before Jon drops a real party-killer: a statistic claiming vegans are more prone to depression. Vanessa and Joey play armchair psychologist to figure out why, and Jon offers his own theories. Finally, Joey recounts the time he spent 50 minutes preaching the plant-based gospel to a roomful of people, most of whom were police officers. Did his presentation change any minds? Is It Possible To Be 100% Vegan?, Part One
Many fellow herbivores claim to be 100% vegan, but is that really possible? Between the hidden animal byproducts in your wallpaper, tires, and computer screens, achieving vegan perfection is a lot harder than you might think. In part one of a two-part episode, The Tofu Trio discusses whether or not striving for a 100% vegan lifestyle is realistic. Spoiler alert: They admit that it's nearly impossible almost immediately. As usual, they veer off topic quite a bit. In fact, the show kicks off with Joey presenting a comic book that, while lacking market significance, holds great sentimental value for him. Vanessa then debuts her latest knitting project, which somehow managed to make Jon sick, before Jon responds to a listener email questioning his frequent use of ChatGPT. Don't worry. They do eventually get to the topic at hand. They just don't spend a lot of time on it. Maybe they'll do better in part two next week. Goals and Hopes for 2026
The Tofu Trio began the new year by looking back at their goals and hopes for 2025, but in today's episode of Vegans Talking Shit, they're officially setting their sights on 2026. Among the many topics covered in this episode, they discuss the plight of stray dogs and cats, the elusive importance of sleep, the complexities of starting a vegan travel company, and the questionable ethics of naming a pig "Bacon." Will Joey, Jon, and Vanessa actually meet their respective goals this time? Will their hopes come to fruition? Probably not, but they'll be reviewing the footage at the end of the year regardless. Tune in now to hear the goals and hopes, then check back in a year to see if they're celebrating or making excuses!Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. 2025 Year in Review, Part Two
In the conclusion of their two-part episode, The Tofu Trio reviews the vegan-related milestones they hoped to see in 2025 and the reality of how things actually unfolded. Spoiler alert: It wasn't pretty. Vegan cheese hasn't improved all that much, plant milks are failing to outsell dairy, and vegan breakfasts remain elusive. Furthermore, lab-grown meat is still prohibitively expensive, and instead of an industry boom, the number of plant-based restaurants has actually dwindled. 2025 wasn't just disappointing, it may have been worse than the year before. There's plenty more in this jumbo-sized episode: Joey sounds off on why Mark Cuban is a sore loser, Jon defends Leonardo DiCaprio's inconsistent environmentalism, and Vanessa laments Eleven Madison Park's retreat from an exclusively plant-based menu. Plus, the trio discusses cholesterol, Hippeas, IKEA's vegan offerings, and much more. All that, plus a cameo from Bob the Cat!Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Main podcast image artwork by Diego Orellana. 2025 Year in Review, Part One
Almost exactly one year ago today, Vegans Talking Shit released the episode "Goals and Hopes for 2025." Now that a year has gone by, did The Tofu Trio meet those goals? And did their hopes come to fruition? After Joey's solo episode last week, the gang is back together to discuss. But first, the conversation kicks off with Jon and Vanessa's recent trip to Canada, highlighting the local vegan food scene and Jon's hockey-filled itinerary. The trio then dives deep into their progress on their 2025 goals, but they save the discussion regarding their hopes for part two. Joey Flies Solo Again
With Jon and Vanessa on vacation, Joey flies solo once again for this special Christmas edition of Vegans Talking Shit. Back in April, Joey's first solo attempt clocked in at just over 10 minutes. This time, he's much more loquacious. The vegan talk is light, but the content is heavy. Joey finally answers lingering questions from previous episodes: What did he think of "Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair"? And did he ever adopt that kitten from Petco? Things take a personal turn as he discusses mental health struggles, the importance of therapy, and the sustainability of a weekly release schedule. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper episode without Joey letting his geek flag fly, so he dives into the "Supergirl" trailer, his thoughts on season two of "The Last of Us," and the industry-shaking news of Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. To wrap things up, Joey shares his Christmas wish while taking a few shots at a certain well-known political figure. Throughout the episode, Khaleesi makes her presence known, though some of it is just the sound of her grunting and snoring. Opinions expressed in this episode are Joey's alone and do not necessarily reflect those of Jon or Vanessa.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Meet the Co-Founder of the Swiss Vegan Society
For this week's episode of Vegans Talking Shit, the Tofu Trio welcomes Rafi Neuburger, a fellow vegan traveler Jon and Vanessa met while on a vegan cruise. Rafi has been vegan for over 25 years, helped found the Swiss Vegan Society, and is strongly committed to reducing the suffering of human and non-human animals. The four of them discuss, among other things, the future of veganism, what the vegan scene looks like outside of the US, and places that have banned lab-grown meat. Of course, there's also quite a bit of silliness along the way. But wait, there's more! "Santa Rafi" comes bearing gifts, dropping some great ideas for future episodes of the show. It won't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one is Joey's favorite.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Ethical Investing, Part Two
The Tofu Trio is back to talk about ethical investing in part two of a two-part episode. Before diving in, Joey talks about movies and a kitten who left him smitten, but Vanessa steers the show back on topic before things get out of hand. During their discussion, Jon talks about the importance of tracking your spending, Vanessa navigates the moral tightrope of investing while staying true to your values, and Joey proudly details his life-altering, huge investment in Bitcoin. Toward the end of the show, Jon reads a lovely email from Neil, a listener in Cambridge, UK. We're worldwide, baby! Ethical Investing, Part One
In part one of a two-part episode, The Tofu Trio gets into ethical investing, and discuss whether or not it's possible to make good financial investments while keeping your soul intact. But of course, it isn't all just IRAs, stocks, and ETFs. Joey gives a startlingly detailed review of his first-ever colonoscopy, Jon shows some love to the Vegan Vampire apparel company, and Vanessa revisits why you may not want to ask for pinto beans in Brazil. Surviving Thanksgiving
For this Thanksgiving episode of Vegans Talking Shit, the Tofu Trio offers tips on how to survive the annual holiday tradition that tends to feature a dead turkey as its centerpiece. They spend a good 15-20 minutes on the topic, but the rest of the episode is mostly topic-adjacent chatter; Jon gets into the controversy of sports teams with Native American mascots, noted Brazilian Vanessa patiently teaches her two American co-hosts some American history, and Joey discusses the bizarre annual tradition of the Presidential Turkey Pardon, a ridiculous ceremonial display of clemency for one lucky bird while 45 million others are put to slaughter. Tangent Warning: Due to a regrettable error by Vanessa, Joey manages to drone on about comic books for several minutes.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Vegan Terminology
The Tofu Trio returns to discuss vegan terms, the familiar ones and no-so-familiar ones. Truthfully, they discuss the topic for only about 15 minutes. The rest of the time is devoted to various other things; Jon talks about women's soccer, Vanessa drops some truth bombs about the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, and Joey reveals what he's been doing to keep the sound of his dog's snoring out of the podcast. All this plus PubSubs, plant milk, nut milk, and a kinda/sorta debate about Joe Rogan.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. A Year of Talking Shit
For the last month or so, busy schedules have made it nearly impossible to get all three members of The Tofu Trio to record together. But now, finally, Jon, Vanessa, and Joey are together again, and in this episode, they discuss everything they've learned after surviving their first full year as podcasters. They get into the complications of moving from audio-only podcasting to video recording, the rookie blunders they committed during their first major guest interview, and the disappointment of learning that they've gotten less support from their vegan friends than expected. Also, Jon gets into a rant about his hatred of the phrase "in a vacuum," Vanessa hints at how and why she has Brazilian Netflix, and Joey goes on and on about his latest binges in the TV landscape.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. With Jon unavailable as he deals with work stuff, Joey and Vanessa deliver a topic-free episode and provide an update on the future of the podcast, including the Vegans Talking Shit online store that they're currently developing. Non-Vegan Voices: Joey's Dad
With Jon and Vanessa in Chicago this week, Joey hosts another Non-Vegan Voices episode, and this time, it's his dad who joins the show. Joey's dad is an Italian American octogenarian with a thick New York accent who can't let a few minutes go by without cracking an absolutely abysmal joke. Joey is known for constantly veering off topic, and that's certainly the case here, but somehow, he's the one who desperately tries to keep things on track while his own dad derails his podcast. It's a comedy of errors, made worse by an endless stream of really bad jokes.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Should Vegans Have Pets?
Once again, you're getting only two-thirds of The Tofu Trio, because Vanessa is in Brazil. Just accept it, folks. Jon and Joey discuss whether or not it's okay for vegans to have pets, a controversial topic for some in the vegan community. They also talk about whether or not it's okay to have wild and exotic animals as pets. If you've listened to this podcast enough times, it won't surprise you to learn that they don't exactly do a deep dive on the topic because they spend more time off topic than on it. For example, Joey whines about the proliferation of AI, despite being a frequent user, and Jon spends some time talking about his love for Canada, and the comedians who've hailed from there. And with Vanessa gone, there's no one to get them back on track. Also, Jon uses the f-word, eventually leading to Joey convincing him that the word shouldn't always be censored on the show. So this is an unbleeped episode! Adding to the lack of professionalism, the audio and video go out of sync halfway through the show and Khaleesi can be heard making her usual noises. But at least she makes an adorable cameo!Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Main podcast image artwork by Diego Orellana. Billie Eilish
With Vanessa in Brazil, it's just two-thirds of The Tofu Trio in this episode. Joey talks about the TV shows he's been watching, he and Jon debate the merits of the Emmy-award winning HBO Max series "The Penguin," and Jon talks about his bathroom adventures after an incident that left him believing he'd mistakenly consumed dairy. They eventually get around to the topic, which is pop superstar and noted vegan Billie Eilish. Joey saw her in concert, and wanted to talk about the experience. Without Vanessa around to keep the boys in line, they bounce around and go on various tangents, but all things considered, it could have been much worse.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. Zoos and Aquariums, Part Two
In part two of a two-part episode, The Tofu Trio are absolutely NOT discussing zoos and aquariums. Instead, they talk aliens, ghosts, past lives, and other supernatural stuff. Is this still a vegan podcast? Well, they do pause for a minute to ask if aliens are vegan, so there's that. Listen as Jon talks about Coast to Coast AM, the radio program hosted by George Noory that covers unexplained phenomena, Vanessa gets into wildly unconventional alternative medicine that gave her relief when traditional doctors didn't, and finally, Joey shares some of his creepy experiences during his time as a paranormal investigator. So if you want a break from all the vegan talk, and maybe prefer something a little spookier as we head toward Halloween, this episode is for you. Zoos and Aquariums, Part One
In part one of a two-part episode, The Tofu Trio grapples with the ethics of keeping animals in captivity. Joey admits his personal contradiction of never setting foot in an aquarium, but still visiting zoos, as long as he believes that they meet his delusional standards for conservation and welfare. Jon and Vanessa argue that zoos are animal prisons for profit, masquerading as centers for education and habitat preservation. For the most part, the three of them do stay on topic, but the same can't be said about part two of the episode, which releases next Tuesday.Vegans Talking Shit is hosted by Joey Di Girolamo, Jon Missirlian, and Vanessa Silva. When Vegan Restaurants Add Meat Options
The Tofu Trio gets together to discuss their thoughts on vegan restaurants that add meat to their menus. But first, Joey talks about visiting the comic book store on Batman Day, Jon gives his thoughts on the few minutes of "Superman" that he watched, and Vanessa brings up her love for LEGOs. They eventually get to the topic at hand, but before long, they veer off and do something they've never really done before on the podcast, and even vowed they would never do; they talk politics. Although they keep things mostly objective, they talk about Trump, the Jimmy Kimmel suspension, and the Charlie Kirk assassination. They're all over the place in this episode, but at least they don't say anything too bad. Or do they? Seven Challenges of Being Vegan, Part Two
In part two of a two-part episode, The Tofu Trio continues their discussion on the article from VegOutMag.com about the seven challenges of being vegan. They actually stay on topic beginning to end, at least when not doing a lot of shameless self-promotion, and they tackle the very real feeling of vegan imposter syndrome. Also, Jon goes on a rant about online trolls, Vanessa talks about the guilt she feels when feeding her cats, and Joey says the f-word six or seven times. But it's all while staying on topic! And yes, in the background, you'll hear more snoring from Joey's dog, Khaleesi. The Gary Yourofsky Interview Post Show
The Tofu Trio pulls back the curtain on how they were able to get Gary Yourofsky to appear on their show, what it was like interviewing him, and how they felt after it was all over. This episode was recorded right after the interview, with Gary Yourofsky's appearance fresh on their minds, and it's obvious that they were still giddy from the experience. Also, Jon hints at his plans for the podcast to take over the world, Vanessa reveals who the Gary Yourofsky stand-in was when they practiced the interview, and Joey expresses disappointment that Vanessa never asked her question about crocheting and knitting. Bonus Episode - Gary Yourofsky's Greatest Interview Ever
At long last, The Tofu Trio interviews lecturer, educator, and vegan animal liberation activist Gary Yourofsky. In what may be his most incendiary interview yet, Gary Yourofsky doesn't hold back. He's raw, unfiltered, and not afraid to push a few buttons. Of course, this wouldn't be Vegans Talking Shit without some foolishness. Jon can't help but to strike up a conversation about hockey, Joey brings up bodily functions, and speaking of bodily functions, Vanessa takes a pee break in the middle of the interview... and leaves her mic on! If all that weren't enough, Joey's beautiful English Bulldog, Khaleesi, can be heard snoring through most of the conversation. As the show goes on, Vanessa spends most of the time basking in the afterglow of Jon's big announcement, Joey makes time to fawn over "Superman," and Jon tells listeners what he thought of "Blade Runner 2049." ABOUT THIS SHOW
Vegans are a controversial, much-maligned group, but we're all just regular human beings who live, love, and laugh. Visit us @veganstalkingshit on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube and @vegans.talking.sh on TikTok. Send an email to [email protected], and you may get your questions or comments read during our show.
