We’re In A Band!

Did you ever wish you learned to play guitar or drums but never got around to it? Do you love live music but wish it was you on stage? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to sing in front of hundreds or thousands of people? Well, then, why not come hang out with Nick, Mike, and Jase as we sit back, have a couple drinks, and discuss everything about being in a band. We’ve spent our entire lives playing music and playing in bands and now comprise the Hudson Valley’s number 1 90’s & 00’s cover band, Run For Cover, playing all the songs we’ve grown up with and love. Whenever you see a band playing at a bar, club, festival, or private party, there’s so more that goes on behind the scenes to make that happen: decades of dedication and practice, tens of thousands of dollars spent on equipment, and thousands of hours of practice, not to mention negotiating with club owners and even organizers, dealing with inter-member conflict, and the struggles of being both artists and businessmen.Jo

Episode 38: Where have we been all your life? (Did you miss us?)

We've been gone for a year. It's not your fault; you're great fans, you just weren't fulfilling our (admittedly) insatiable needs. Just kidding. Or am I?!?!? Given our new hectic rehearsal and gig schedule, I can't promise we'll be here every week for you, but we'll send you feet pics if you ask; something to keep you warm and horny when you can't hear our voices. But we finally got a chance to record a new episode and our aim was clear; to tell you - our adoring and fanatically loyal fans - about what we've been cooking up for this last year, and here it is. We now have a Taylor Swift tribute band. Okay, now that the laughter has died down, I'm serious. Like, no joke. After a gig sometime in the summer of 2024, Mike, Nick, and I (Jase) were chilling in the Taco Bell parking lot (shout out to Taco Bell) at 2 in the morning and Nick randomly brought up an idea. He said, "What if we made a Taylor Swift tribute band?" Neither I nor Mike thought he was serious, but we had just left a gig at a bar that was set to have a Taylor Swift night the following evening. They had a life-size cardboard cutout of her and, let's face it; she was (and continues to be) the biggest thing in the world. Nick mentioned his wife's sister had a female singer friend, and within a couple weeks, we had our first rehearsal with a small handful of easy-ish songs. Things didn't quite go as smoothly or quickly as we had hoped. We initially aimed for a debut in February of this year (2025), but we weren't anywhere close to ready. We're all perfectionists in our own way in this band and our aim with this tribute act, much like our aim with our 1990's band, was to recreate the album experience as much as possible. Mike needed to create a ton of new sounds for his guitar incorporating both acoustic and electric sounds, Nick needed to find a way to incorporate his electronic drums in with his acoustic drums to cover the more dancy-electronic sounds, and while I continue to play bass, I also picked up my keyboard again and had to create a multitude of piano, synth, and synth bass sounds. It took around a year from our first rehearsal to our first "mini" gig with 20-some songs, but a couple months later we up to nearly 30 songs, and in two weeks, we'll be playing our third "real" gig as Starbucks Lovers (a cheeky band name taken from her song Blank Space where it sounds like she's saying "Got a lot of Starbucks lovers; they'll tell you I'm insane..." see socials links below) at Gleason's in Peekskill with almost 35 songs spanning her entire career, including two from her newest album; performed with near-album accuracy with performance notes taken from tour footage, including several of Taylor's costume changes (although, she'll be changing backstage, so you have to get in real good with her if you want to see that. I'm a goddamn brilliant musician and in her band and I don't even get to see that, so good luck... So yeah, we've been busy. Join us in this episode as we talk about the journey we've all been on throughout this process. Unfortunately, the singer for Starbucks Lovers was not available to join us, but we promise we'll have her on in a future episode.   --- Send us your questions, comments, concerns, nudes, and death threats to [email protected] - we'd love to talk about you on our next show! Episode 35: Are we sellouts?

Selling out. What bands or artists do you know of that have "sold out"? What does that phrase even mean any more in an age where everyone of every age has a "brand" spread across social media, where everyone shamelessly monetizes every aspect of their personality or tries to make money from every hobby they undertake? Everyone's trying to make a buck these days, yet there are still holdouts who believe some artists have sold out. This week, we discuss the ins and outs of selling out in the music industry - whether it's even a consideration these days or how it impacts authenticity (or if it even does/can).  Come see our new tribute act called "36,000 Miles" It's a Vanessa Carlton Tribute show, but we play "1000 Miles" 36 times in a row! Episode 34: On Professionalism & Local Musicians

Hey guys; first of all, PLEASE send us your comments, questions, or hate mail - we don't care; we just wanna hear from you! Ask us questions - anything you want to know about us, music, the local music scene, Jase's browser history, whatever - and we'll talk about it and give you a shout out! Email us at [email protected] or any of our social links below! Thanks for checking out this latest episode of the pod. This week, we dive deep into what makes a band "professional." We discover that professionalism comes in more flavors than simply earning money for doing something; it can be how you conduct yourself, showing up on time, or, you know, maybe skipping that last shot of Fireball which might make you do ... questionable... things on stage. While J may be the only in the band to have ever earned 100% of his living playing music (back in the day), Mike and Nick are no slouches when it comes to professionalism. We spend most of our free time on band-related endeavors, show up to gigs on time, and get along with club owners and bar staff. We don't get paid a lot, but we keep going because, well, we're professionals. Shrek is love, Shrek is life. Thanks to everyone who's come out to support us and the venues we play. We always have a blast playing for you guys - you give us so much love and our only aim is to take you back to the 90's. We love all of you and love interacting with y'all. Episode 33: Mad Libs, clearly, are not our strong suit.

Public Pool Skin Infection. Goblin Cock. Three-Inch Infection (I'm sensing a theme...). The Taco Bell Three. Run For Cover. What's in a band name, anyway? What makes a good one? This week, once we get past all of Jase's insecurities, rob Mike of his innocence, and toy with Nick's fragile emotions, we eventually get down to the business of band names. Back in the day, you could name your band anything you wanted, change it, change members, etc. and no one would care. In the modern age of social media, a band needs to consider all things and all possible permutations of things to come related to the band name (including what the acronym of the band might be; I'm looking at you, Jimmy Eat World). We call this "branding." And from the outset, you need to not only name your band something cool, clever, catchy, and fun, you must also be original (meaning, don't name your band "The Guess Who" when there's already a band called "The Who" in popularity). We have some fun with a band name generator and go over some of our favorite and least favorite band names. You might even learn a thing or two! The love is fast, but it's ugly. Thanks to everyone who's come out to our shows, either deliberately or because your friend dragged you out to the bar that night. We recently played the Barton Orchards Food Truck festival; a staggering 6-hour gig; five 45-minute sets punctuated by great food, beaitiful weather, adorable puppies, and local whiskey. We had a blast and can't wait to be back in November!  We always have a blast playing for you guys - you give us so much love and our only aim is to take you back to the 90's. We love all of you and love interacting with y'all. We're happy to take pics, sign autographs, do body shots (whatever that is), or anything else! We had a blast at your birthday party, Melissa! 7. 35

Episode 32: Why is it so hard to find a band?

Why is it so hard to find a band? When we were kids (before social media was the center of everyone's life, if you want to know how old we are), you'd find bands organically; your neighbor, friend, classmate, etc. Back in the day, Craigslist used to be safe for kids (now it's just for weird hookups - hit me up in the m4mmmtw forum, by the way, if you're into crucifixion fetishes). But these days, people are desperate to find bands and have difficulty doing so. It gets even harder (giggity) as you get older, since everyone has baggage; kids, careers, vices, bitterness from previous bands, etc., or they're stuck in their ways, have dozens of songs that they expect others to learn (in other words, you're just helping to realize someone else's dream), or, the worst, they just haven't grown up; no money, transportation, or are just flakey or irresponsible. Last week (the week before this podcast was released, the week after it was recorded), Run For Cover celebrated our 6th anniversary! If you would have told me (Jase) that the guys (well, most of them, anyway) that I met that one fateful night at a friend's house to try each other out, playing some Seven Mary Three and Third Eye Blind, not really sure where things would go, but for some reason scheduling our first gig three weeks from then... I would not have believed you. I don't have stats, but in my experience, local/cover bands just don't last that long, even when money and popularity is involved, so I'm ecstatic. In this episode, we discuss what it takes to find and keep quality band members; a topic we haven't had to deal with in quite some time, thankfully. After six years, we each have some significant insight into what makes a band work or not work (not to mention what to do or not do to even just find other musicians). Thanks to everyone who's come to our shows, either deliberately or because your friend dragged you out to the bar that night. Episode 31: Hop onto my dream ride: A.I. music is better than people music.

This week, the guys tackle a topic that's important in just about every industry - A.I. We explore some AI-generated music with Udio, a service that lets you type prompts in and it'll create a fully-produced, radio-ready song with singing and full-band arrangement. It's remarkable how far AI has come and terrifying how far it can (and probably will go). We explore a number of genres and styles - some are better than others, but, with as good as it is now, it'll be indistinguishable from human-created music in the very near future. To that point, you probably have been listening to AI-generated music for several years now and haven't even noticed... Oh, and don't tell anyone, but Jase is terrified of spiders. Thanks to everyone who's seen us in the last few weeks, either deliberately or because your friend dragged you out to the bar that night. 9. 33

Episode 30: Send us money to buy giant inflatable dog heads! (Who are we kidding? We'll spend it all binge-eating at Taco Bell)

We promised not to name any more episodes after U2, and we held up our end of the deal. It was VERY difficult to resist, especially after such brilliant quips like "U2-icide." The crazy thing is, none of us really listen to U2, but as performers, it's impossible to deny their influence - and then with their recent residency at the round ball thing in Vegas, they're back in the spotlight. Before that, they were only in the news around 2012 because their album came free with on iTunes with new iPhones, so they became a meme for people that don't like them and couldn't get rid of the album. Goddamn it. Here we go, talking about U2 again. Okay. No more. How cheap is Nick? Why won't he just buy new sticks? For the love of god, stop hitting your drums with frayed, splintered chopsticks!!! Mike and J have to change strings every couple weeks; new bass strings are $50, new guitar strings are $15, yet Nick has been using the same $14 sticks he bought in 2014. GHAAAAA!!! Okay, now that that's off my chest... Voice care, hearing concerns, keto & weight loss, the eclipse, mobile home depreciation - we talk about it all in this episode! Mike & J recently saw Jimmy Eat World and Fall Out Boy in concert, so we talk about the logistics of concertgoing (logistics; strikingly captivating podcasting, amirite?) Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. We had a blast playing for you these last couple weeks; shout out to the West Point cadets who joined us at the Firstie Club on the 25th of April and the wonderful crowd at Gleason's in Peekskill, NY two days later! Episode 28: Bono changes their Sphere set daily to avoid committing U2-icide.

Jase argues with AI (and loses). Nick discusses economics. Mike reads obituaries! All around, a good podcast, compelling for all audiences! Nick tells us a dream (yawn) for like 10 minutes. As boring as it is, on the plus side, Jase is kind of a badass in Nick’s dreams (though, he chokes when it really matters). J bathes in hollandaise sauce amidst the band arguing the merits of clarified butter (ghee). Feetfinder makes its resurgence! What should we search for? Bunions? Hammertoes? Honestly, folks, I listened to this whole thing and have - really - no idea what this pod was about. Was it about music? I dunno. Did J talk about Hanson? Probably. Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this. Hope you dig it - come out and see us live. 12. 30

Episode 27: Trying to be cool like The Edge, Jase changes his stage name to "The Corner Piece"

He initially changed it to The Middle, but lawsuits from Jimmy Eat World soon followed. --- Folks, we got a fun one for you this week! Mike plays guitar during the whole episode, demonstrating some super radical tones from his guitar effects processor. Our primary topic, which we don't even SLIGHTLY stick to, like, at all, is how we, as a cover band, try to play the right notes, but often fail; but does anyone other than musicians notice? Unlikely. We discuss some stage SNAFUs, the few times we've restarted songs on stage (which is a big no-no; dare I say an unspoken rule for live performances). We also discuss why we use iPads live. Many local original acts like to poke fun at cover bands that use iPads, but they're not playing 200 songs on a rotating basis. It's not that we sit there and read lyrics while we're playing, but an occasional reminder of how the next verse starts is helpful (plus we use them to send MIDI data to all of our equipment to change presets, tunings, parameters, etc.) Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this. Hope you dig it - come out and see us live. Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. Episode 26: Dude, nobody WANTS to be a bass player; you just end up in that role.

...And then Mike showed up and was an amazing and natural bassist! ... But now he's on guitar... And Jase is on bass? What? What even IS this band? ... As we approach our 6th anniversary of being together as a band, we discuss how incredible our last show was (shout out to Gleason's in Peekskill) - how awesome the audience was, how toasted Jase was, etc. We even met up with another band who was playing next door (False Start) and stood around for 20 minutes talking shop with them (Jase had actually jammed with the drummer!). Our main topic of the day is how playing music with others develops you as a musician. Everyone in this band has had many years of experience playing with others; cover bands, original bands, open mics - you name it! Not only is jamming with others important, you also need to perform in front of people and watch others play. It's not always just about ego or comparison, but it teaches you to have a realistic appraisal of your skills, your understanding of music, your understanding of where you can fit in, and helps to keep your finger on the pulse of your local music scene. --- Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. Episode 25: Rawdoggin’ the Warm Denny’s Toilet Seat

Thanks for joining us for this 25th and last and truly final episode of ... whatever this piece of crap is called! This is Mike's final episode as a single man - henceforth, he will pay taxes jointly; he will no longer masturbate solo (or he'll wait until she's asleep and express his true fetishes). He's eating for two, now, if you catch our drift. Mike's getting married! Of course, he'll be considering an annulment by the time this episode is released, probably. Anyway...  Does Nick accept a gay drink from a hot gay D.A.R.E. cop at a probably gay pirate bar? Gay Jase says probably gay yes. Our main topic, which we get to (eventually), we discuss our most despised part of gigging. Is it the drive? The load in? The lack of willing participants for blowies? The club owners who ALSO won't give blowies? WHY BE IN A BAND IF NO ONE GIVES YOU BLOWIES?!!?? Sorry, I'll start another podcast to discuss this in detail. The guys begged me to stop writing these show notes drunk, but I'm always black out-drunk when I talk with them, anyway, so I can't remember a damn thing they say. Anyway, we love all of you and love interacting with y'all when you come to our shows. We're happy to take pics, sign autographs, do body shots (whatever that is), or anything else! Episode 24: Jase's confused teenage crossdressing story was cut for time, but his fourth stepmom probably doesn't even listen to this.

Supposedly, it was just a phase...But let's be honest; it wasn't nearly the most shocking thing Mike or Nick has learned about me and it won't be the last (does that sort of phrase work here?). Thankfully, his stepmom doesn't listen to this podcast. Anyway... Happy birthday Mikey!! He turns asl68&^*&5jh years old on this episode! Old enough to be of consenting age to be forgetting you in a cabaret somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask his name! Naturally, me (Jase) and Nick forgot. Who cares. Long as the monkey dances and plays guitar and fucks up at least less than us, we don't notice he exists. We're not married to him. At least, I don't think we are. I'll check on that and get back to you. This is our first annual New Year's Resolution episode! Find out what we've each determined to be the new behaviors and attitudes we plan to adopt in 2024! What the hell is up with the NYC ball drop? Some stupid expensive crystal ball slowly being lowered into it's hole? Dumb. We all - whether we admit to it or now - make new year's resolutions (also, whether they happen at the beginning of the calendar year or a personal date) and we all have incredibly complex reasons for them. Settle in with us as we discuss ours; some music-related, some not so much. As always, thank you so much for listening. We can't wait to see you all live more this year. We have a PACKED schedule! Please; come up to us at a gig and say hello, introduce yourself, tell us your favorite song (maybe we know it or can add it), and tell us your favorite podcast episode. Episode 23: Questionable liquid spewing from The Rock Hard Cafe's fountain - Sponsored by FeetFinder.com!

FeetFinder.com - now with over $5M in feet pics sold annually!* Jase gets a new Ferarri. Mike accidentally gets conned into buying way too much Panera Bread liquids. Crash Bandicoot is the Jimmy Buffett of video games. Who's has transparent skin and be slammin' younger gash? Shout out to FeetFinder.com for their clever logo. This week, we talk about creating original music; a taboo subject for a cover band. Should creativity feel like work? Marriage? Driving in a van? What the actual fuck was J talking about? ... What would our roles be if we were to create original music? Would we make a concept album or just an album of disparate songs? Jase writes songs as ambiguous as his sexuality - how do Mike and Nick write? If we became famous from an original, what are we (as a band or individually) saying yes to or saying no to?   We are eternally grateful for your support; thank you all who come to our shows, support local small businesses, and send us dick and berginer pics on the reg. Slide into our DMs? Not with that girth, you don't - YOU SMASH THROUGH OUR DMs!!!! Not quite as sexy, admittedly, but more forceful, I guess, which could be good or bad, depending on how much you've had to drink. In any case, we can't wait to see you all live more this year. Episode 22: Sausage Grows On Sausage - The Most Episode Ever!!

(Inside joke for the time J got extra sausage.) Mike's Panera Bread woes. Jase gets two flat tires in one day. Yes, synth stores do exist! The gang gets high on Spotify wrap-ups! What did we listen to? How has being in a band affected our Spotify algorithms? Jason can't count Tool music's time signatures... So, guys; it's the new year. Literally NOTHING has changed. What the fuck? Shouldn't everything be new? But nope. Same president, same girlfriends and wives, despite our best efforts, same three damn band members. We've desperately tried to replace each other over this last year by getting extra skilled at Microsoft Excel, but even a spreadsheet won't save us from ourselves, apparently. This week, we all review out Spotify year-in-review (or whatever they call it; wrap up?) and talk about how being in a band has changed not only our spotify algorithms, but our listening habits in general. We are eternally grateful for your support; thank you all who come to our shows, support local small businesses, and send us dick pics on the reg. Slide into our DMs? Episode 21: Broccoli-haired boys at Planet Fitness - can we just not?

How much is it okay to drink during a gig? What's the ideal level of drunk for creativity? Nickolai finds "a Reddit" with an article that ... articulates the answer! Great! Now we don't have to think. Nick has caused Mike and J to abandon all hope for a drummer that can play in time. Mike's route cause analysis of why Jase lived in Sioux Falls. The meditative war sounds perfectly demonstrate J's skull's war on his hair! All this and more on this week's 21st and final episode! Or does it mean you stick by them through thick and thin? Should you force yourself to like an album by listening to it so many times you can't NOT like it? What would your favorite band have to do - legally or morally - to make you not want to ever listen to them anymore? How would you create the worst band possible? Episode 19: The Ten Commandments of Being in a Band

The gang solves the middle east crisis. What conspiracy theory is most likely to be true? What is deja vu? Are we living in a simulation? What's the best Matrix movie? Learn how to use a good Shrek wig to look great and promote inclusion! Nick makes fun of J's tattoos, Mike talks shit about white women. Finally, at some point, we get into the real sausagy meat of this week's pod, the ten commandments of being in a band. We score about a 70%, which is a C. Episode 18: That was the summer I saw my dad’s penis.

Settle in for Nick's riveting subway story (the crackhead-filled mass transportation under NYC, not the sandwich shop that hires yester-fat pedos) featuring his inability to spell fentanyl. Jase bought Hanson shirts. We discuss cover band competition and cover bands with separate singers (okay, sure; they might play a tambourine here and there). Mike works at the power company and Jase saw his dad's dick for the first time on Lake Erie! All this and more; to the soundtrack of John Cage's 4'33" and Mike choking on a donut. Special Edition: What the f*** is up, Denny’s? Pt.3 - Run 2 Cover

Join us this week for another special post-gig podcast recorded at Denny's. We're exhausted, spent, drained, empty, and just about any other term that might apply to both a post-coital ballsack and a band that has just played their hearts out for the last 4 hours. Nick wasn't able to join us this time (he had to go throw up so he could fit into his wedding dress), but we took the opportunity to talk mad shit about him. Fuck that guy, amirite? We love you guys - come see us live sometime! Drink some good beer with us, party to your favorite tunes, and let unwind from a busy work week - that's what we do and the whole reason we're in a band.

Episode 17: How DARE you - on Shrek’s green c*** - call me a ”ska guy”?!?

Pro tip: skip the first five minutes!!! Relentless spiders, Hudson Valley geography, Nick's newest eating disorder, Caribbean doctors doing BBLs - this week, we've got it all! What music do you listen to when you're depressed or ... ate too much ice cream? Great news! YouTube probably has a channel just for you! What does it mean to be a professional musician? When did we accept that we are nothing more than a fat old bald dude whose terrible at guitar, a hipster, and a bulimic? Was it when J learned that a music teacher's salary didn't begin to constitute a ROI? Perhaps. Was it how demoralizing it can be to play original music to an empty house? Was it [insert whatever Nick's reason was here]? Yes. Truth is, we all enjoy playing music together a hell of a lot more since it isn't our primary job. While there's always a secret desire for fame and fortune, it sometimes feel like we're all dodged bullets to not have pursued that life. ...Or at least that's what we'll keep telling ourselves. Episode 16: Donate ALL your metal rods to Ozzy Osbourne

Bruh... This week, we thought we'd try something new. We decided to record 17,000 measures @ 669 BPM discussing why middle-aged woman diarrhea is worse (for some reason). From dick pics superimposed over spreadsheets, measuring dicks by weight, to poo on a plane... This fifth and final episode went off the rails almost immediately and never returned. Instead of discussing music, we spend an hour and 40 minutes discussing diarrhea. Nothing much has changed since we were in 6th grade, apparently, and we're entirely unapologetic. J discusses the medical realities of diarrhea and c. diff infections and the need for an ass-to-ass centipede situation (fecal transplant) to cure it. We force listeners to experience 15 versions of "Baker Street" in an attempt to unravel the mysteries of why 80's movies had so much saxophone music in their intros. Jase continues to bore listeners with more nursing stories. Heavy (dense) dicks can damage vocal cords, just so you know, and Meryl Streep has never starred in a movie, according to our cis white hetero male drummer (Nick). Lots to love in this episode! We love you guys - come talk to us the next time you see us live (if you don't, we'll know). Until next time! ByyyyeeeeeeeEEEEeee!

  25. 17

Episode 15: Excuse me, waitress; do you have anything to wash this water off my hands?

Jase makes the Denny's waitress uncomfortable (again). Still no lawsuit or authorities involved, so, win? Rock down to (Mike's) electric car review. Nick's old Hungarian navigator shame's him into going the speed limit. What exactly is the 90's look? We lay out all of our political views at once! R.I.P., Jimmy Buffett - Nick (and ONLY Nick) will miss you and can name more than one song of yours. Whose dick weighs exactly 87 Courics? Find out now! Join us as we discuss gigs, rehearsals, stage presence, and all the random crap we encounter during our gigs and all the even more random crap that goes through our heads as we play for y'all!   Editor's Note: Can you believe we've made it to episode 15? I thought we quit this shit years ago, but every week or so, I find myself back here posting a new podcast. I'm going out for a run tonight so maybe I'll killed and won't have to post this. Oh wait... It's already scheduled for release tomorrow morning. Well, at least maybe I'll be dead in time to not have to do another one. Thank you to everyone who's come out to see our gigs and who's subscribed to our various butthole-only OnlyFans accounts. It really keeps us motivated. We love you and can't wait to see you at our next gig. If you listen to this podcast, let us know the next time you see us! BYeeeEEEeeeeeeeEEeeeeEEeee!!!!

Special Diner Episode 2: Don’t bring a vagina to a cock fight.

Shout out to meat! Following our gig at Newburgh Brewing Co. on August August 25th, we convened at Denny's in the middle of the night to replenish thousands of calories and discuss meat, Jerry Seinfeld, restaurants with fake soap money, how to pronounce "Porche" and other such impossibly important topics. Come hang out with us for an hour or so and enjoy the sound of us eating while we entertain our delusions of grandeur.  We love you all and can't wait to see you at the next show! But, more than anything, we need to ask you: What the fuck's up, Denny's?!?

  27. 15

Episode 14 2: Judgment Day for Mouth Garbage

Thank god our wives, girlfriends, and fiancees never listen to this podcast. They'd dump us if they weren't legally bound to us, soon to be legally bound, or financially dependent. But they're too busy doing taxidermy, tarot, or whatever the drummer's wife does (something to do with the mafia, probably?). Today we discuss what it's like being in a band and in a relationship at the same. Pokemon evolutions, Game of Thrones, suicide, and doing anal exclusively, since we're bored of every other sectual position (next episode: why all of our significant others are still "technically" virgins); all these topics are covered in depth in this brilliant - but final - episode of "We're In A Band!". Why are women's bathrooms so pristine at a Dream Theater concert? How often do rock stars get laid? Well, we can't answer that because we're not them; we're a teacher (allegedly), an engineer, and an IT guy, but we can dream, dammit!! We address the serious topic of suicide. [Insert inappropriate dick joke or Mike-bashing here]. Is suicide cool? Is it a decision you'll be happy about? Hint: not likely, if Queen's advice holds any water... R.I.P. Freddy Mercury, who sadly died of suicide by - what else? - mercury poisoning. I'd love to sit here and type more, but I see a can of Spam that needs a my-penis-sized hole cut in it and violated, so I'll leave it here. We love you all and hope to see you at the next gig!!

  28. 14

    Special Edition: Making the Setlist

If you were in a band with twice as many songs in your repertoire than you can fit into the three sets comprising a typical gig, how would you choose what songs to place where? What song do you start the first set with to pique the sober audience's interest? What song do you end the night with make sure you leave a lasting impression to the party animals who stuck it out to the end? In this special edition of "We're In A Band!", we answer those questions while we build the setlist for our upcoming gig. You'll experience our process; the reasons we choose certain songs and put them in a certain order, as well as the problems and solutions that placing certain songs in certain places throughout the sets can create.  Being a cover band puts us in a unique position: Ostensibly and ideally, a cover band will have nothing but songs that everybody loves all the time. Three hours jam-packed with bangers. Some bands, in fact, will only play Billboard #1 hits. However, the reality is that most cover bands, especially ones initially starting out, will also choose to play some songs that can only be described as filler material - what we call "low-hanging fruit" - songs that are easy to play, don't require a lot of work to get sounding good, or are jam songs that can be extended indefinitely to fill time with solos/noodling. So many bands in their first couple years will have only a handful of songs to choose from or swap in and out since they barely have enough songs to cover a 3-hour gig. That's not us. At least, not anymore.  We used to have to play songs that we knew were lackluster just to have enough songs to fill the time. These days, we have nothing but songs that we love, the audience loves, or both; we have no filler songs and we are constantly adding new songs; often, when we make a suggestion to one another during rehearsal, the suggestions are met with excitement, instant recognition, and a sense of chagrin that we haven't been playing that song all along. So, our struggle the opposite: It's difficult deciding which of our favorite songs from our massive list of bangers won't make the cut that night! In this somewhat more business-like episode, join us as we place songs to account for vocal pacing, to work the crowd, for the convenience of instrumentation as Mike and I (Jase) trade guitar and bass back and forth, and to plan for the inevitable encore. But how can we choose an encore when there's still dozens of songs that we haven't played that we really want to? Run For Cover is in a great place with our song selection. As a democracy, we all have veto power for songs the other suggest and, on the other end of the spectrum, we all can suggest songs. The net result is a repertoire of fan favorites and band favorites that we simply love playing for you.  Credit where credit is due, Mike does the most work when it comes to building sets. His instinct with pacing and finesse with arrangement means that Nick and I, while technically having as much say as we want with set-building, rarely have to say anything more than "Set looks good, Mike; maybe we can fit _____ in if we get time," while looking at the set, excited to play it all and more at the next gig. This episode was probably most foreign to Mike, as this is usually his own personal, internal process that he let Nick and I in on. NOTE: Sorry for the serious show notes. I usually mention dicks or balls or pedophiles or shoving bowling pins in said dick; but for this special episode, I figured I'd deliver a more informational and editorial message. In the end, as you'll hear, the show this set was built for was rained out, so we never got to play it as ordered, but that's always a risk with live music, particularly live music played outside. Shout out to our hardcore friends at Peekskill Brewery in Peekskill, NY who stuck it out between the rain and finished the night strong with us, even though it ended early. We love you guys and we'll see you next time! Now then. Enjoy those dicks and balls, you bowling pin-wielding pedophiles!

  29. 13

    Episode 14: It’s really episode 13, but we’re deathly bi-curious... er, superstitious.

What does a humidifier and dehumidifier fighting have to do with a human centipede? Well, I hate to break it to you, but you never find out in this episode as that's just nonsense and Google is free, so use it! This week, the boys discuss bowling pins in their pee holes, Jase being away for Air Force training, the final messages from some past potential band members, and Mike's ...adequate... performance as our guitarist (we're desperate to replace him, but we can't find that damn spreadsheet). Nick bores Jase literally to death by listing every Michael Keaton movie ever. RIP. Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Gran Turismo, Madden 2005, Tony Hawk, NBA Live '03, and whatever else crappy sports game Nick mentions: It's rare to find an adult male these days who wasn't enamored with or influenced by video game music, and these are some of our favorites. The absolute highlight of the show is, without contest, Nick rapping out (is that what the kids call it?) to Busta Rhymes. While Nick and Mike tend to lean heavily toward games with actual rock bands, punk, or rap music, Jase favors the 8- and 16-bit chip tune music and orchestral scores that enjoyed ubiquity in the NES and SNES eras (except for all that awesome 80's music in GTA, of course). Hmm...Busting a mad rap? I don't know. I'll Google it. No, I won't. It don't matter. None of this matters. Just say "Smith" again.

Episode 12: Why don’t all them are like that?

Dollar General, Waffle House, and Airpods; oh my! Nick has a surprise for the band! In this final reunion episode of "We're In A Band!," we discuss our dream gear - gear we would buy if we had a million dollars, gear we can reasonably expect to buy before we die (thanks to the revenue you lovely listeners generate for us!) and gear that we plan to buy next with our meager working man's salaries. For Nick, it's drums. For Jase, a new synthesizer. For Mike? Eh, I wasn't really listening so who knows? Probably something lame like a Les Paul. Jase laments his has-been status as a songwriter. Nick doles out advice for new drummers. Mike learns us reeeeaaalll good about boutique basses and classic guitars. Thanks for hanging out with us; we love you and can't wait to see you at our next show. ...   Fuck you, GameFly.

Episode 11: It’s Tough Business; Being a Competitor of Meats

Do you sit or stand when you pee? How about when you go to concerts? No, I mean, not whether you sit or stand when you pee at concerts, but... Ugh. Never mind. Anyway, in this 11th and absolute finalfinalFINALlast episode of our podcast, Jase talks about lessons learned from the last concert he went to (Dream Theater with Devin Townsend and Animals as Leaders). Live music is a three-dimensional way to experience music. Many musicians do not perform with the audience's experience in mind; maybe that one person in the crowd has not had a night on the town in years, or maybe that one woman will be mugged by murderous clowns on the way home - regardless of the situation, it's our job as musicians to (yes, first and foremost sell beer) give the audience an unforgettable experience. Live music is one of the few times in polite society where you're allowed to (expected to?) scream (again, also acceptable while being tortured by clown gangs), jump, dance, clap, and sing along at the top of your lungs. It's glorious and cathartic. If you haven't seen live music in a while, go out and see a band and keep the above in mind (unless you won't be alive, due to clowns and whatnot). We also need be prepared for equipment malfunctions - but how much redundancy can be expected from a band at our level? Join us as we explore these topics, drink some hipster IPAs, and make fun of the CD compilation commercials from the 90's (surprisingly, they still air!). By the way, I'm running out of clown makeup and my usual guy ended up meeting a tragic clown-related end. Know anywhere I can buy more? Oh! Special Diner Edition 1: What the f*** is up, Denny’s?

Newburgh Brewing Co., July 1st, 2023 Sad lemons, social media engagement, syrup, solar crops failing, and sisters (of the Twisted type); We meet up after a great gig at the local Denny's and discuss the gig and whatever else comes to mind. Songs we fucked up on, things we did well - it's always important to revisit the performance and figure out what we could have done better, but if all else fails, just wear a Dunkaroos shirt to distract the audience!

Episode 10: Every Single Seinfeld Episode is Great.

oUr FiNaL ePiSoDe, We PrOmIsE!!! Mike's back from vacationing in Italy (or, as he calls it, the "Adirondacks"), and Jase is about to head out on vacation to the Adirondacks (or, as he calls it, the Finger Lakes), but somehow, they find an hour to get together and drink beer and shoot the shit about... god knows what. What do you miss most about the 1990's? Mike misses being 6 and the Mets (apparently, this is a sports ball team). Nick misses pookah shell necklaces, flesh lights and... girl fights? I don't know. I wasn't really listening. You know how drummers can be. Saved by the Bell sucks, but you know who doesn't? Cyndi Lauper. Join us as we discuss the world's most overrated drummers! Can you guess who topped the list? I'll give you a hint: Nick stormed out of the room to start his own podcast mumbling something about Weird Al and how some random Redditor was about to get an earful...   ...   ...   ...of sausage.    Thanks to Ear Sausage Studios for sponsoring this episode!

    Episode 9: r/FeetPics Has a New Member!

In this 9th and final episode, we cover one of the most important topics a band can discuss: Hanson's re-re-re-release of their 1997 hit with "MMMbop 2.0". We also dig into the things that keep a band together, from splitting the pay equally and checking our egos at the door, to more difficult aspects like each person being a leader in a particular way and how we work to make each other better. "Old Man Nick" returns and discovers Reddit! To his disappointment, it's not, after all, just like Yelp!. We discuss music birthdays, music news, and generally just hang out, drink some hipster IPAs, and enjoy being in a band as we near our five-year anniversary as a band.

  35. 7

Episode 8: 1992 was a dark year for Boy And Man Band.

In this 8th and final episode, Mike has a surprise for the band (it’s probably not a keytar, like Jase’s surprise, but it MIGHT be)! Nick regales us with the legend of J. 4-Loco! Mike starts to feel old when he’s out-hipster’d by younger hipsters at a Bluegrass concert. Jase, once again, can’t get through a single story without mentioning his desire to fellate at least one Hanson. We each share some of our most embarrassing moments in our musical lives, from choking on some basic a Capella scales in front of the whole 6th-grade choir class, including the girl Jase loves, to having embarrassing band members, to flubbing entire sections of songs in front of tons of people, the life of a performing musician is never dull. We’ve all learned to handle it differently, but all in healthy ways, like, for instance, Nick just never stops doing or saying embarrassing things and Jase has just accepted that he can’t sing on key. Like, ever. We listen to Def Leppard’s new symphonic album, discuss Whitney Houston’s hits, and talk about Dwight David Eisenhower & Tina Turner’s music (she died on the same day Bob Dylan was born. Coincidence?!?! Different years, of course, that overlap, but still… COINCIDENCE?!?!?). Nick goes on to mention a whole bunch of people no one’s ever heard of who had birthdays.   Tune in next week for our next final episode where we’ll surely discuss… something, probably. Who knows. Who cares? Does anyone even read this? I REALLY hope Mike's surprise is also a keytar...

Episode 7: Kieth Richards’ Only Weakness: A Nude Art Book Slightly Out of Reach

No Ragrets! Today the boys discuss missed opportunities, the instruments that got away, and concerts that Nick was too cheap to buy tickets to and now harbors deep regrets for having missed. We all have regrets. Sure. But what if those regrets turned you into an old, fat, stuttering, rambling bald man who sits when he pees and who thinks listening to Fox News is an adequate substitute for a personality? Or what if those regrets made you into a bearded hipster twink in a middling cover band who buys records because they sound "warmer"? Or maybe those regrets made you into a skinny-fat gym teacher who listens to Spotify with ads, can't figure out how to save a photo on his phone, and buys expired beer because it's cheaper? Well, saddle up, because that's what happened to these poor unfortunate souls (please don't sue us, Disney). Jase obsesses over AI, paperclips, and information hazards, while Nick can't finish a thought because his fellow podcasters are absolute bastards whose only goal is to distract him from his point. Mike spends five minutes trying to demonstrate what a particular cymbal sounds like. Yep. That's entertainment, folks: Terrible onomatopoeia on a terrible podcast. No, it gets better: Nick sings an entire Dio song a capella.  Sinead O'Connor, evidently, is the new lead singer for the Dave Matthews Band ever since the violinist violated the saxophone...er? Saxophonist? Whatever they're called. Hologram B.B. King performs, but spends the whole show testing his blood sugar and administering the correct dosage of insulin. Still, he manages to play more music in two blurry, diabetic, short-of-breath, comatose notes than Jase has every played in his entire life. Respect (pounds chest). Sandy Wesserson returns with... a Panera Bread ad? We aren't sure, exactly, but he pays for the ad space, so we run them. For three guys that get paid only in sausages and politics, whose wealth is measured in Gran Turismo 7 credits, and who can't get laid despite their four-inch girth, the boys are back week after week with nonstop entertainment straight from their mouth holes to your ear balls! And yeah! Where ARE the William McHenry assassination conspiracy theories?!?!* *(Who the f*** is William McHenry?)

  37. 5

Episode 6: The Impending Waco-style Electric Jackhammer Standoff & Diners with Fake Water money

Politics, amirite? Join us while we explore a wide variety of topics; all sure to keep our FBI guys on alert and sure to ruin any chance of running for office in the future. Nick continues to be an old man, Jase continues to have a suspiciously overt crush on Hanson, and Mike continues to put together a spreadsheet of replacement band members in case we let him down one more time. Just ONE more time... So... You live in a studio apartment and your best bud comes over, drinks all your beer, and then pisses with the door open. Is that sound something that makes you want to order chicken and waffles at 2:00 in the morning? Well, come hang out with us as we devise a rating system for the diners we visit after our gigs! Experience our highs and lows; extra sausage that creates an incident or the time we almost died trying to split a check. Hear about Mike’s $16 gold-plated omelette and the time Nick ordered and egg salad sandwich and was asked how he wanted his eggs cooked. What? Jase doesn’t want Andy Dick levels of fame. Later, we’re joined in-studio by a special guest sponsor; a local business owner with a great deal for you! We spend 26 minutes discussing George Santos’ sins and how Hunter Biden is our pick for president (date to be determined) and delineate how reptiles differ from amphibians (hint: dragons lay eggs). All this and more on our 6th and final* reunion episode!! *Not final... Probably. ... Maybe.

  38. 4

Episode 5: John Trepucci’s weird, slanty frets.

My fingies hurt! In this final* reunion episode, the boys discuss how Venn diagrams are evil. They shed light on the process of building a setlist; how they manage the songs' energy levels from the first song of the night (when people are sober, bored, skeptical, and critical) to the last song, where they can pretty much play the Lamb-chop song over and over and have the audience eating out of their hands while they've got them by the balls. Try not to picture the last sentence. Make a Venn diagram, if you must. They discuss how digital streaming services have ruined the art of the "secret track," but they've also reduced the number of useless "noise" tracks (I'm looking at you, Tool's Aenima...) and how Mike's ultra rare collection of Jaguar XJ220s are a message to Jase: STOP BEING POOR!!!" It's important to note that this advice didn't magically make Jase able to afford his own Jag. Nick. ... (I could have sworn there was some reason to mention Nick...) They address the Ed Sheeran & Marvin Gaye estate copyright infringement lawsuit. Hint: They're not lawyers and they're hardly musicians, so it's unbearable to listen to. Jase nearly chokes to death, but first, he has a big surprise for the boys! You'll learn how Nick is secretly an old man who only buys expired beer and calls it "insta." Jase doesn't know how to let a joke die, and everyone cringes every time he speaks. They guys consider firing him due to his inability to play the simplest guitar riff that he's never been able to play. But fear not! There's a spreadsheet full of replacements at the ready. Just think - once he's not on the podcast, you won't have to hear about Hanson ever again! Nick. ... Just... Nick. Oh! They boys FORCE Nick to play a Rush song before he's ready. Is that a crime? Probably. Is it a sexual crime? Maybe, in a way, but the other things we do to him probably definitely are. He's well-compensated, though, so it's hard to feel sorry for him. *NOTE: This is not actually our final episode... I mean, unless we die between when this is published and the next one. Unlikely, but possible, especially considered the odds are tripled due to there being three of us. Did anyone consider that?!?! Try not to be too disappointed or surprised, I guess is all I'm sayin'. People die all the time unexpectedly. Why would we be special? You need to seriously consider your worldview if you just ASSUME we'll still exist to provide endless hours of peak entertainment for your earballs in perpetuity. Paid for by the "Vote Sandy Wesserson" PAC and Ear Sausage Studios.

  39. 3

Episode 4: When we were young and impressionable - bands we got boob to & music that made us who we are

In this episode, the boys finally determine if Metallica’s St. Anger is the best album of all time across the multiverse or just basically the best music that the human race can deliver in this current timeline. Hint: Yes. Who touched their first boob listening to Dave Matthews Band? Third Eye Blind? Who touched their first boob listening to whatever band Mike said? You’ll have to listen to find out! Speaking of touching boobs, Jase gets turned on. But not sexually. Well, yes, sexually, but also not sexually. It’s complicated. Sexually complicated. Mike talks about his discovery that he's his own independent human and confesses his childhood crimes to a captive audience, against his FBI guy’s advice and is promptly detained by police. More beer for the rest of us, I say! Before he is arrested, however, he teaches us about Gibson guitars, PAF pickups, and Green Day’s pre-fame albums. Presidential candidate Sandy Wesserson returns in hopes of garnering a few more votes: Justice for front axels! We also discuss Millard Seymour Hoffman’s critically acclaimed supporting actor role in Dred Ragon. From pirating music to our primitive and recent musical inspirations, the guys discuss the gamut of their early musical influences. There are a lot of surprises, too, from Nick’s love for NWA and indie music to songs that got Jase through his deployment to Afghanistan, to Mike’s video game music history. They also discuss their musical listening habits in the age of Spotify. Guy, I heard you talking shit about Hanson behind my back when I went to the bathroom. By the time you read this, your tires will have been slashed. Also, for some reason I’m typing this: “Straight Outta Condom: The NWA Drive-Through Experience of a Lifetime.” Idea for a film, maybe?   Pre-Fame Albums Mentioned in this Episode:  Green Day’s “1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours”: https://youtu.be/3tSSNahGRJE Hanson’s “Boomerang”: https://youtu.be/4OpbvooBmAE

  40. 2

Episode 3: Sandy Wesserson has a plan to eliminate menacing road whores.

In this episode, we tackle important topics like, “How much hair is too much hair… on your feet?” and, “Nick’s victorious emergence from his mad beef with a middle-school band nerd dude” [sic], and we discuss our first bands. We play a drinking game where we take a shot every time Nick mentions Neal Peart (Hint: We nearly die. Don’t do this at home; we can’t afford the liability) and discover Rush is nothing more than a pile of skeletons and decaying meaty bits (Limbaugh, not the band Rush; or, at least, not 2/3rds of the band Rush. R.I.P., 1/3rd of the band Rush, whatever your name was).  Jase discusses his spelling error-free manifesto and confesses his willingness to beat off a guy when he’s blue. Insert something about Mike here. Nick and Jase discover they both spent time playing in Christian bands. Jase said he loves Jesus Christ, but Jesus said that while he likes Jase, he doesn’t like, LIKE like Jase and thinks it’s probably best if they just stay friends. Jase temporarily mutes notifications from Christian Mingle while he processes this rejection.  Start this paragraph with a sentence about Mike. Add another Mike-related sentence. Finally, we question why man-of-the-world, well-traveled Jase wastes his time with provincial-ass nobodies like Nick and Mike. We bring back the wows bigger and better than ever with “Wow wow. Wow wow wow 2: Judgement Wow” (produced by Michael Bay, of course, because James Cameron had far too many …sexual… requirements to do the film and frankly, none of us knew how to convert US dollars into the strange currency required to satiate his …exotic… appetites). So, in conclusion, please don’t sue us, James Cameron.

Episode 2: Wow wow, wow wow wow.

High off the immeasurable success of our first podcast episode, we continue with that frantic momentum by discussing tuning our instruments to the universal frequency (A=432Hz, duh!), how Mother Gaia is actually a man, and how we grew into our various roles as a band. Jase does the whole podcast all boned up because he can't figure out how to turn off his hardpore corn. We discuss our first R4C gig, read some musicians' classified ads, argue about drum stick sizes (while Jase watches corn, of course), and learn that Mike is so rich that he can afford stairs, earning him the title, "Mr. Fancy-Pantsy-Richy-Stairsy-Boy." Also, what does it mean to 'boff?' Maybe you'll find out! (Hint: No, you won't find out).

Episode 1: We’ll Fix It In Post

On our first episode, we discuss Tom Petty, tuck jobs, Esteban as a legitimate musician, and possible juicy leaks to AOC, should one of us run for president. Is the drummer for Green Day better or Blink 182? We do, eventually - and sporadically - discuss being in a band. Hang out with us as we drink a couple good beers and make fun of each other!

ABOUT THIS SHOW
