Ep. 65: Recongizing Our Differences in a Beautiful Way - BONUS ROUND with Chika Oduah
In this part of the conversation, Chika discusses her shift from mainstream journalism to founding Zikora Media and Arts, an organization aimed at presenting complex, authentic African narratives. Motivated by a desire to move beyond the stereotypical portrayals often found in traditional media, Chika established Zikora as both a media production company and cultural institution. Its projects, such as Diaspora Magazine, offer Africans living abroad a platform to share personal stories on diverse themes, from facing racism to preserving cultural identity. Chika supports contributors throughout the writing process, helping them shape these narratives with an emphasis on the full human experience, both struggles and joys. Mike, inspired by Chika’s work, expresses his own vision for a project focused on the Pacific Islands. His aim is to build a platform that fosters deeper understanding of the region's unique post-colonial realities and cultural resilience. Both Chika and Mike acknowledge that colonial history cannot be separated from present-day narratives; rather, they seek to explore this complex legacy with nuance. Their projects reflect a form of cultural entrepreneurship that amplifies local voices and honors the intricate connections between historical influences and current identities in Africa and the Pacific. He get’s into the three phases of being an entrepreneur (8:15). Each phase is an important part of growing a successful business. He color codes the different types of pain one faces in the second phase of an entrepreneurial journey (10:00). They all demand different responses. For American’s listening 'amber' is yellow, by the way. (ohhhh .. the Brits) :D (12:20). Steven’s struggle with epilepsy (white flag pain) became the inspiration to write his book (16:40). Steven’s struggles really resonate with Mike as he soon publishes his story and opens up about similarly sensitive and personal ‘red flag’ issues in his own life (20:00). Steven adds examples of prominent people who have fallen from grace because of not dealing with the red flag pains in their lives (22:00). They pivot to talk about Steven’s children for a moment, (22:20) always of constant interest to Mike who loves the next generation so much. Steven’s final remarks should be an encouragement to any TCK and others coming from another country wanting to make a difference in “someone else’s” world (24:45). He is the founding partner of both Blue Cloud Health and a million-dollar strategy and consultancy firm, The Strategy Boutique and has been a judge for some of the UK’s most prestigious business awards. Steven talks about his transition to Plymouth, a town that was at the time, 99% white. He discusses too how he met his non-TCK spouse and a bit of their journey assimilating together (8:40) in Plymouth. Mike has a compliment for people like her who manage the transition (9:26) well. Mike talks about his upcoming book (of course!), and (16:00) asks Steven what we should do in response to racism and polarization. His answer may suprise you. Ep. 50: 'Ismail' or 'Ishmael'? Why does it matter? BONUS ROUND with Sherif Ismail
Mike and Sherif cover a lot more ground in this bonus episode. Sherif talks about his Fellowship in Mongolia and his hope to become a global nomad. Mike talks about why Sherif may be a better English teacher BECAUSE it isn’t his first language. They talk about the collective conscious as well again to wrap things up! Mike asks Sherif about how his cross-cultural background aids his efforts in teaching English abroad (1:40) and they get into the benefits of having learned the language as a second language has in teaching it. Mike stops himself from waxing on too long, and wants to know what Sherif will be doing after his Fellowship. Sherif’s inspiration comes from his time in the countryside Mongolia (5:50). In the process of discussing nomads, Sherif’s marital status comes in from left field (10:45). Mike has some ‘soapbox’ comments about that as well. He gets into what breakups look like around the world. :D Of course Mike brings his book back into the discussion (15:30), because he wants Sherif to talk more about individual and collective egos. He really expounds on the value of growing self-aware, especially through experiencing other cultures (21:00). Sherif’s comments about fear really resonate with Mike because its something he addresses in his book (25:00). Sherif brings it home matching it up with the current regional conflict with the Palestinians and Israel to wrap things up (27:30). If you are interested in becoming a Fellow in the English Language Program be sure to check it out here! Of course updates on Mike's book can be optained here on his website: https://sullyworks.com/

Sherif was born in Saudi Arabia to Egyptian parents, grew up in Egypt and migrated to the U.S. Like Mike's previous guest Claire and himself, Sherif currently serves as an English Language Fellow, but with the U.S. Embassy in Mongolia. Who is a first generation immigrant? The discussion is never settled on this podcast. :D (3:30). Mike asks the ridiculous question .. (4:20) Mike and Sherif discuss the Arab world (8:10) and recent geopolitical events, and their impact on Sherif. Why don’t we hear the good things about 'them' (9:20)? How many of our assumption about ‘them’ are wrong (11:25)? Mike stumbles over Egypt a bit, thankful for Sherif’s graciousness (16:00). He talks about the challenges becoming an American (17:00) and no longer quite fitting in at home in Egypt or the US (18:50), something all TCK can easily relate to. He also throws out a Netflix recommendation for those curious about Arab Americans. He gets into some of his dating challenges as well (21:45). This segues into talking again about names. Mike admits his fantasy one more time of getting President Obama on his podcast, and Sherif explains his last name and the linguistics around it (23:00). Finally, to wrap up the first part of the interview, Mike’s curiousity grows in how Sherif got into English teaching, as both of them are Fellows in the same program (26:00).

Claire Lee is a Fellow, like the host, Mike Sullivan, in the prestigious English Language Program, sponsored by the US Department of State. She is working with the US Embassy in Tokyo, Japan .. they talk a bit about her Fellowship in the podcast. She speaks of one encounter at grad school with a former admissions staff member said volumes about the issue (19:00). They dive into the cultural elements of perfection in Korean and Japanese societies (21:00). Claire independently confirms one of Mike’s biggest pet peeves about the term ‘Asian-American’. She talks about the challenges and rewards that have come with it (27:35). They both agree that they have received so much from the professionals around them in their respective countries (32:00).

Ep. 44: Where is Your Name .. From? Final Thoughts from Karina Lagarrigue
There are reason why Mike keeps the record button pressed throughout his time with these amazing guests. There might be something that puts the cherry on the top of the ice cream sundae .. in this case .. quite a few cherries. Karina or should I say Kalimba, drops another treasure chest and talks about her real name and challenges growing up with it. There is definitely a multitude around the world that can relate! (2:00) Karina and Mike were all but done with their talk, when she divulged a personal story of her real name and the troubles that ensued as she navigated her TCK world. She shares a stunning story that reveals how sad and broken our world is (5:00), and the demands people make in knowing why she has the name she has. She feels safe enough to unravel the mystery for listeners and talks about how parents should think about the impact it has on children when naming them (12:35). Mike tells his wife’s name story (17:00), and they trade a few more name stories and talk about how we feel safe among TCK’s where we accept all our odd names without judgment (20:30). Ep. 43: A Cocktail That Makes You YOU! Meta Traits, with Karina Lagarrigue
In this episode, Karina Lagarrigue and I talk about sensory processing sensitivity and highly sensitive people. It's in her wheel house for sure and specifically the area of her recent research. Mike and Karina jump into the deep end on sensory processing sensitivity and highly sensitive people (2:40). Mike chastises himself for assuming it is a disorder or disease. Karina provides beautiful explanation of polarity in the field that exists and talks about the healthy place in the middle—That this can look very different from person to person (8:50). Mike tries to avoid soliciting any simplistic observations but looks for information helpful for teachers in the classroom to know if some children are highly sensitive. Karina talks about her own children as examples (12:00). Mike and Karina discuss her personal experiences as a highly sensitive person (19:30), and how she managed it growing up. This segues into the diversity among highly sensitive people depending on many factors such as extroversion, introversion, and the pension for thrill seeking (24:00) as an HSP. Mike talks about his own experience feeling like there was something wrong with him (27:24), and how its often a picture of society's view of the unique traits we have. Karina talks about the dehumanizing effects of labeling someone due to our complexities (29:45). Mike relates this to grading systems in the arts and how unimaginative it is to measure the heights students climb to overcome unique challenges for each of them (33:00). Watch out on social media and Karina's websit for her workshop for Highly Sensitive TCK (34:30) with Michael Pollack coming out in April. Karina gives 3 pieces of advice (34:00) to parents. "We are not raising little clones of ourselves, we are raising human beings (39:55)." (40:20) The ‘museums’ .. Mike inquires about Karina’s involvement in designing spaces that contain a healthy amount of stimuli for all. Karina divulges that designing a space for highly sensitive people is good for everyone (44:00). Ep. 42: 'The Dance' with Sexologist and Expat Couples Therapist, Karina Lagarrigue
Karina Lagarrigue graces the podcast in a 3 part series. She is a sexologist and couples therapist, mainly with expats and shares with us her journey toward her doctorate, her TCK experience, and the “dance”. Mike stumbles over another name .. :D (3:40). Karina discusses the final road she is on with her thesis and publishing her fascinating findings in a series of articles more palatable to the audience (3:50). Mike weighs in on the complexity of psychology and Karina responds with her experience in the field (7:30). The ridiculous question of course is asked. It is as uncomfortable for Karina as it is for any of us (12:10). Mike gets into the weeds of asking about discrimination sounding like (17:25) the colonies rather than from Spain. He then starts to nerd out about what he’d like to study for his PhD (19:00). Karina shares how she became the “Dance Therapist” (21:00) as a sexologist and couples therapist, helping them reconnect with their bodies. Mike (28:30) suddenly wonders about the gender dynamic with leading and its connection with ‘dance’ in the bedroom. Do we do what makes everyone else comfortable or ourselves? How does that work? Karina’s answer dives into their TCK upbringing and the dynamics around the expat parent’s lives and THEIR needs (30:30). Doreen has recently retired and rewired to Mexico but hasn't stopped. She is releasing her third book soon, and it has been amazing having the host of 'Nomadic Diaries' on the other side of the microphone. Glad to have her on the other side of the microphone. Doreen’s quest for coffee is a priority (3:00), and this spurs a conversation about the difficulty of getting Americans to imagine the rest of the world (4:00). Then suddenly, they discover an overlap in engagement ring stories (6:30). The ridiculous question (8:00) gets an interesting reaction from Doreen. Mike asks Doreen for the “short” rundown and she gladly obliges to provide the two minute version of her amazing journey as an expat. Doreen mentions marrying a TCK, which prompts Mike to ask about his background (13:00), and finds out its it goes back much further. Doreen articulates the shift recently within the TCK community (14:20) to understand the difficulties of being a TCK, and how her daughter is actively overcoming them (17:30). Mike opens up about his ‘kryptonite’ as a TCK and a significant story from his book (18:45) that exemplifies our super weaknesses along with our super power. This provides a segue to Doreen’s upcoming book about repatriation (20:50) and the balancing act it becomes in fitting in and standing out. She talks about her own repatriation experiences (23:00), and corresponding advice. For example how do we deal with estrangement (27:00)? Mike talks about the possibility of repatriating back to the US (29:00), and his associated goals (32:00). Doreen drops more precious tips for those of us considering such a transition regarding bringing kids (35:00) and visioning with them (38:45) of what our future will look like. Jacob then answers the ridiculous question giving us a rich backstory between two different worlds, one in the farmlands of Kansas and then in the densely populated cities of Vietnam (16:30). Andrea answers the ridiculous question (6:00), and how she grew her wings and the expat journey that ensued and continues. Episode 36: BONUS ROUND with Dr. Ruth Van Reken. Can We Love & Relate in a Polarized World?
Dr. Ruth Van Reken shares why she resonates with Mike's book title .. Building Bridges: Can We Love & Relate in a Polarized World? She also talks about SPAN (Safe Passage Across Networks). She talks of the commonalities, not the difference that give TCK's an edge in a diverse world (1:30). She talks of the world's toxic comfort in a 'negative identity' .. defining ourselves of who we are not (5:00). Mike of course brings up his book that comes out later this year, 'Building Bridges: Can We Love & Relate in a Polarized World?' (5:50). Ruth answers with her own background growing up 'Among Worlds' that spanned cuultuures and socio economic boundaries (7:35). Ruth talks about the power of listening and understanding, knowing that people we are talking to didn't grow up the way we did (9:10). Mike says that people CAN change and adapt to others. He points to his parents as models (10:00). They talk about privilege and how that creates a gap between us and others, as well meaning and broad as our experiences, we often don't get treated the same. Some of us simply had more (11:30). 'We aren't as global as we think we are.' (13:40) She talks about a valuable experience of suddenly being the odd one out (15:00), as others around her were 'having a ball' (16:27) in a language she didn't know. Mike rounds this discussion out (18:00) mentioning the education he has received from the love of his life, and how important that has been to see the gap between them on socio-economic terms. Ruth adds that it is abouut 'seeing others as human (20:00) because of proximity. TCK's often bring that valuable experience tothe world. Finally, Mike asks Ruth to talk about SPAN (22:00), an organization started by Doug Ota. SPAN helps children transition across networks because of their familys' highly transient lives. It provides support for 'leavers' and 'stayers' alike. Dr. Ruth Van Reken loves watching people add to the work she has done (29:00), and how it is changing lives. Episode 35: Dr. Ruth Van Reken takes over my Podcast!!
Dr. Ruth Van Reken, co-author of Third Culture Kid: Growing Up Among Worlds, is arguably the biggest pioneer in working out the unique place we TCK's belong to in this world. Mike is still pinching himself to make sure this is really happening. They start off discussing dealing with timezones and the transition to virtual meetups (3:10). The interview starts with with her pegging Mike repeatledly with questions about his life (6:15). He tried to do a short take on it, but stumbled (9:15 :D) when she asked about what he will be doing in the future. They move on to talk about travel and aging with the paradoxes of living a full life when getting older (10:15). They trade quite a few stories about it all. Mike supplants the conversation with the work she's done over her full life, and she answers it with her vision that she feels she was called to manifest (20:00). Finally, she talks abouut how David Pollock's model is still intact but is more like a petri dish having added layers of complexity and uses Mike's kids as an example (23:00). Certainly stay tuned for more in the BONUS ROUND (Episode 36). Thanks for joining us.
