Ep. 41 - “Rites of Passage: Raising Real Men in an Age of Weakness” – with Dan Smith of Voyage Rites

In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit down with Dan Smith, founder of Voyage Rites, to explore one of the most important—and overlooked—responsibilities of fatherhood: guiding boys into manhood.Listen in to learn the 5 Things Fathers Must Do Before the Rite of Passage, and then how to construct bona fide rites of passage that signfy and invite manhood. This convo is so important to me. I see an impending lack of good men in the world, and simultaneously a rising tide of intentional fathers. In this pod we unpack what’s missing in modern culture when it comes to raising strong, grounded, and sovereign men—and why so many boys today are left searching for identity, purpose, and direction.Dan shares his personal journey from law enforcement and the FBI to building a movement focused on rites of passage for young men, along with the deeper realization that changed everything for him as a father of three boys.We dive into:-Why boys don’t automatically become men—and what’s been lost over the last 100+ years-The hidden impact of the Industrial Revolution on fatherhood and masculine development-How modern culture encourages passivity—and what it means to raise a sovereign young man-The psychological need for rites of passage (and how boys try to replace them in unhealthy ways)-What fathers can do today—at every stage of childhood—to prepare their sons for manhood-The difference between being a “good dad” and being an intentional fatherWe also break down Dan’s framework for guiding boys through a structured journey—from early childhood, to preparation, to initiation, and ultimately into adulthood. This is a conversation about responsibility, clarity, and stepping fully into the role of a father—not just as a provider, but as a true guide in their leadership journey. If you’re a father—or plan to be—this episode will challenge how you think about raising your sons and daughters.🔗 Connect with Dan Smith & Voyage Rites:Linedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-smith-307469322/Website: https://voyagerites.comExplore events, programs, and resources for fathers and sons🔔 Subscribe for more conversations on fatherhood, leadership, and raising legends.Onward!-Dave MomperLeadership Coach and Brand New Dadwww.thrivalconcepts.com#WhoaDadGoDad #RaisingLegends #IntentionalFatherhood #DadLeadership #LeadershipAtHome #ModernFatherhood #PresentDad #FatherhoodJourney #MarriageAndFamily#RiteOfPassage #RaisingMen #MasculineLeadership #StrongFathers #BoysToMen #PurposeDrivenMen #MenOfCharacter #SovereignMen #LegacyBuilding#ParentingBoys #FathersAndSons #NextGenerationLeaders #FamilyLeadership #LeadYourFamily

Ep. 40 - “From One Child to Two: Expanding the Container of Fatherhood” – with Mark Guay

In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit back down with Mark Guay—my very first guest and now my first repeat guest—as he stands on the edge of a major family transition: welcoming his second child (a baby girl) literally any day now. We talk in real time—before the birth—about what changes when you’re no longer stepping into fatherhood for the first time: the mix of excitement and pressure, the honest fear that comes from knowing how intense the first months can be, and the way parenting forces you to confront your own patterns as they get mirrored back through your child. Mark opens up about the realities that don’t make it into highlight reels: past postpartum and health scares, the mental load of protecting a marriage while raising kids, and the responsibility of “expanding your container” as a man and father. We also get into deeper territory—rites of passage for boys, loneliness and resilience in young men, and why so many modern conversations about masculinity stop short of solutions. Two quotes that really caught my attention: “Every new child demands a bigger container. The work is becoming the man who can hold it.”“Protecting your marriage while raising children isn’t automatic—it’s leadership.”If you’re a dad in growth mode—or you’re preparing to become one—this conversation is a grounded look at what it means to lead your home with presence, emotional ownership, and real support for the mother of your children. Connect with Mark on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markwguay/Tap into Mark's "7 Dimensional Breathing" course:https://markwguay.me/7dbreathingOnward!-Dave MomperLeadership Coach and Brand New Dadwww.thrivalconcepts.com #WhoaDadGoDad #RaisingLegends #IntentionalFatherhood #DadLeadership #LeadershipAtHome #ModernFatherhood #PresentDad #DadLife #GirlDad #SecondChild #SecondBaby #BabyNumberTwo #NewbornLife #GrowingOurFamily #TwoUnderTwo #ParentingJourney #FatherhoodJourney #MarriageAndFamily

Ep. 39 - “Stop Raising Soft Kids” – with author Jeff Nelligan

In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit down with author and parent to three badass men, Jeff Nelligan, to talk about a hard truth: the clock on fatherhood starts earlier than we think—and resilience doesn’t magically appear at 18. Jeff shares how raising three sons (now all military officers, including one who pursued a waiver for professional rugby) shaped his latest short, punchy book: Four Lessons for My Three Sons: How You Can Raise a Resilient Kid.We also get into why so many young adults are struggling right now—and Jeff brings stats that should stop every parent in their tracks:-Gen Z is roughly 71 million people-45% of 18–32-year-olds still live at home-40% have a chronic condition before age 30-Roughly 1 out of 3 report feeling hopeless/depressed/“despairing”-56% are overweight or obese-48% say they’re online almost constantly-Kids ages 10–18 average 8 hours 47 minutes/day on a device (not including homework)-Kids ages 3–5 average ~110 minutes/day of screen time-And when it comes to early work-life readiness (surveys Jeff cites): 6 out of 10 Gen Z hires are fired within the first year, 40% within the first two months, and about 1 out of 3 bring a parent to meet the hiring managerFrom there, our conversation moves into what fathers can actually do: micro-tests of independence, controlled discomfort, real accountability, and a repeatable way to build kids who can handle pressure and responsibility. What you’ll hear in this episode:-Why Jeff believes 75% of the time you’ll ever spend with your kids is gone by age 12-How to build “acclimation to responsibility” through small reps-The leadership mantra Jeff learned in infantry training: assess, adapt, advance-The four pillars Jeff used to shape his sons: courtesy & conduct, confidence, resilience, and ambition-Three practical actions you can implement immediately: device control, nightly walks, and reading rituals-A powerful closing reflection: what Jeff hopes his sons say about him someday—humor, guidance, and gritIf you’re raising young kids and you feel the stakes of the modern world—distraction, softness, anxiety, and confusion—this episode is a direct, practical reminder:Resilience is trained, not wished for. Ep.37 - "Beyond Porn: A Father’s Path to Power" – with Tyson Adams

Welcome to Episode 37 with Tyson AdamsIn this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit down with Tyson Adams—men’s coach, therapist, and founder of the Life Force men’s group—to have one of the most sobering, essential, and profound conversations we've ever had on this podcast. Topic: PORNPorn and a hypersexualized culture hve put our country in a precarious position. Porn impacts our personal agency by hijacking the nervous system and creating compulsive habits that weaken focus, confidence, and self-control. It damages intimacy, teaching us to prioritize performance and consumption over connection and presence. It steals childhood innocence, exposing kids to distorted content before they’re ready, often without guidance. It weakens our culture by producing low-energy, distracted men who struggle to lead with purpose. It leaves young people disembodied and dysregulated, normalizing overstimulation and confusion around identity and boundaries. And perhaps most dangerously, it disconnects us from the sacred, reducing sex to entertainment and stripping it of its spiritual power. This isn’t just a moral issue. It’s a generational one.Tyson brings a warrior’s heart to one of the most taboo and urgent issues facing fathers and families today: the devastating impact of pornography on our bodies, minds, relationships, and, most importantly, our children. Together, we unpack the cultural conditions that have hypersexualized society, the mechanics of addiction through a nervous system lens, and what it means to reclaim our agency—not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come.Tyson shares his personal journey from 20 years of addiction to becoming a global voice for sexual integrity, masculine wholeness, and fatherhood done right. We explore:-Why porn is not just a private issue—it’s a systemic one, affecting everything from our focus to our finances.-How to talk to your kids about sex, porn, and self-worth without shame or fear.-The science and sacredness of semen retention—and why energy, presence, and intention in our sexuality matter.-How slowing down in intimacy can open up cosmic-level connection with your partner.-Why doing your own shadow work is the most protective thing you can do for your kids.-As Tyson put it: “Outgrowing porn is not a moral issue—it’s a nervous system issue. It’s the most efficient biohack to becoming a powerful, present father.”This episode will challenge you. It will likely stir discomfort. And it should. Because fatherhood isn’t about staying safe—it’s about stepping up.🎧 Listen in and pass this one along. Ep. 36 - "The Language That Builds Legends" with Mike Salemi

Welcome to Episode 36 with Mike Salemi"The Language That Builds Legends: How Dads Shape Identity"(Mike’s Dad Stats: One son, age 2)In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Mike Salemi, an elite strength coach turned holistic performance guide, and we dive deep into the evolving role of fatherhood, vitality, and the literal narratives that shape how we lead as men.Mike opens up about his early years competing on the world stage in powerlifting and the physical and emotional burnout that followed. What emerged from that breakdown was a new approach to "men’s work” – one that doesn’t aim to break men down, but to build them up through presence, vitality, and integration. From Qigong and sweat lodges to breathwork and storywork, Mike’s work is about reawakening the father, the partner, and the leader within the man who has lost touch with his full self.We unpack the true power of our words, how language literally sculpts identity, and how "soft talk" can keep men—and their kids—stuck in a loop of vague, disempowering narratives. We also discuss how to guide our children’s voice from an early age through modeling, intentional structure, and love-filled correction, not control. This one’s for the fathers holding a lot. For the dads walking the tightrope of provider, protector, partner, and man. For the men who want to raise legends, without losing themselves in the process.🔑 KEY THEMES:-Vitality as the cornerstone of modern manhood-Language as a tool for self-definition and transformation-Parenting through presence, not perfection-Teaching kids empowered speech (without being controlling)-The quiet weight men carry—and how to share it without shame🎧 A standout moment:“The currency of fatherhood is presence. That is the currency that a child understands.”I can’t wait for you all to listen in! In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit down with Steve Sundberg—father, entrepreneur, Aurora, Co city councilman, and a man whose story stretches from the plains of Wisconsin to the heart of Africa, and right back home to the Rockies. We unpack Steve’s extraordinary life journey: his love story born in a war-torn refugee zone, the rollercoaster of fatherhood through highs and heartbreaks, and what he’s learned while raising two kids into young adulthood. With humility and humor, Steve shares candid reflections on the challenges of parenting, the importance of presence, and why supportive, fun, and present are the three traits he hopes his children remember most. From sledgehammering a PlayStation to serving on city council "in self-defense," Steve is proof that fatherhood and leadership require the same muscle: showing up when it matters most. One of the best moments? When Steve says:"Some lessons just have to be learned the hard way—and we, as fathers, have to stand there with them in that fire, not pull them out of it too soon."Key Themes:-The courage to fight for family (and freedom)-Raising teens who make mistakes—and come back stronger-The silent power of presence-Fatherhood as the frontline of youth development and community safety-Learning the hard way, and passing down wisdom with grace🎧 Whether you're raising toddlers or guiding young adults, this episode offers timely wisdom for every stage of the journey.#Fatherhood #Leadership #AuroraColorado #RaisingLegends #WHOADADGODAD #FamilyFirst #ParentingWisdom #DadLife #StrongFathers #BePresent #ServeAndLead #IntentionalParenting #AmericanDad #YouthMentorship #LegacyBuilding #FatherhoodPodcast

In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!, I sit down with Hampton Roads Police Lieutenant David Smith to explore what it takes to be a protector both on the beat and at home. We dive into the challenges of transitioning from “badge‐mode” to “dad‐mode,” and David shares the simple yet powerful rituals he uses—like dropping his duty gear, taking a deep breath, and immediately giving his kids a hug—to leave work stress at the precinct and show up fully for his family. You’ll hear how David’s experience on SWAT and as a precinct leader exposed him to trauma and hypervigilance—and why, over time, he intentionally shifted roles to safeguard his mental health. We talk about peer support, breaking the stigma around vulnerability, and why acknowledging traumatic incidents with fellow officers accelerates healing. Dads who have ever felt the tension between high‐pressure jobs and home life will relate to his honest insights about carrying the weight of critical incidents and still finding the energy to play catch or teach water safety.David also breaks down his “Provide, Protect, Be Present” philosophy:-Provide by creating a “plan B” for his family’s future and teaching his kids financial and survival skills.-Protect through peak physical fitness, jiujitsu training, and a nutrition regimen that keeps him ready for anything.-Be Present by carving out intentional father‐child adventures, setting up a home gym for family workouts, and enforcing “no‐floaties off” rules at the pool to stay 100% focused.Whether you’re a first responder, a high‐stress professional, or simply a dad striving to be more intentional, this conversation offers actionable strategies to reset your mind, fortify your body, and cultivate an open growth mindset in your kids. In this episode of WHOA DAD! GO DAD! I sit down with my friend Ben Willson, a man with an admirable level of positivity and with what seems to be a bottomless well of intentionality. Ben’s journey into fatherhood—and back again, through loss and healing—is one of those rare stories that grabs your heart and offers real wisdom in return. We unpack his three guiding words—limitless, playful, present—and explore how those values shape not just his parenting but his life philosophy. Welcome to Episode Thirty with Scott Bain (Scott’s Dad Stats: Two sons - ages 26 and 31) Welcome to episode 30 of "WHOA DAD! GO DAD!" with my confidant, Scott Bain. Scott was once my client when I ran business development for a video production company, and as the decades have piled up, it’s a treat to call him my friend and contemporary. As you’ll hear in this episode, Scott is a bonafide student of life, and we get the good fortune of some of the deep wisdom he serves up from his thoughtful look in the rearview mirror. Scott shares some truly candid anecdotes about becoming a great husband, becoming the best father he can be, becoming a strategic creative, and taking the most difficult leaps to become a victor of his own life. Gosh, this was fun to re-listen to as I prepared it for publication! Scott drops his knowledge on many great topics, and here are five that really caught me attention: Adjusting to Different Parenting Styles: Scott found it challenging but necessary to adapt his parenting approach to meet the different personalities and needs of his two sons, particularly with his younger son who displayed a more creative and free-spirited nature. Becoming a Spiritual Leader: Scott shares how he navigated stepping up to the expectations of being the spiritual leader in his family, an expectation set by his wife. This is a role he grew into over time, and he notes the importance of being actively involved in guiding the spiritual direction of his family. Navigating Mental Health Awareness: Scott's younger son had friends who experienced severe mental health issues, including suicide. Scott found it challenging to address mental health adequately for himself and others, and shares the times where there was a gap in his ability to nurture and support his sons emotionally in this area. Being Raised by His Grand Parents: Scott shares the nature of his upbringing, and we wander through how parental figures, the environment, the community, and even the times, all have a potential impact on how we perceive ourselves and the role of fatherhood. Learning from Parenting Mistakes: Reflecting on his journey, Scott acknowledges the challenge of recognizing and learning from his parenting mistakes, striving to adapt and respond better to his children’s needs over time. These challenges highlight Scott’s journey through the complexities of fatherhood, showcasing his commitment to growth and better understanding within his family dynamics. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 29: Featuring Ryan Darilek

This is Episode Twenty-Nine with Ryan Darilek (Ryan’s Dad Stats: Seven sons - ages 7, 8, 17, 20, 20, 28 & 32) Welcome to an intense and moving episode of "WHOA DAD! GO DAD!" with my friend Ryan Darilek. Amongst several career endeavors, Ryan is the Chairman of EmBrave, an organization out of Colorado Springs that facilitates transformational improvement in the lives of people faced with homelessness, mental health difficulties, and justice-related issues. The organization is focused on bringing light to those in their darkest hour, and in a poetic set of events, Ryan was once a client of the organization. The story Ryan shares is nothing short of surreal, and you’ll see how it had a massive impact on his perspective of life, and the ripple effect across hundreds if not thousands of lives. On November 27, 2015, Ryan and his then-girlfriend Karen, experienced a harrowing ordeal at a Planned Parenthood clinic, a pivotal day that became a key turning point in in their lives, and a massive transformation for Ryan as a father, a partner, and a man. I met Shane in 2013 as he facilitated the Leadership Development program I was enrolled in with the Downtown Denver Partnership. Over the years since, Shane has been a sounding board of mine and a mentor, and it’s incredible to sit down with him and tap into his fatherhood mindset.  We get right into the heart of parenting as he shares what it’s like to send his two twin daughters off to college and for he and his wife to officially be empty nesters. He notes that, “How bad did we really mess this up?... Did we do enough?... [and] we're so proud of who they are and what they're doing and where they're going” are amongst the sea of emotions and sentiments held by him and his wife, as they bask in this pivotal moment of their lives. Shane would humbly deny it, but he’s loaded with thoughtful wisdom about leadership and fatherhood - which to me are one in the same - and how we can set our kiddos up for success. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 19: Featuring Colin Dow

Welcome to Episode Nineteen with Colin Dow (Colin’s Dad Stats: Two daughters, four and two years old)  Like anything in life, fatherhood is a game of sorts. Fortunately, my guest Colin Dow played college football for University of Montana and had a short stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, so he has a knack for the hustle and mettle that fatherhood takes. It’s because of Episode One of WHOA DAD! GO DAD! and a mutual friend that Colin and I now have the good fortune of being pals. In my short time knowing Colin I’ve come to admire his fire for being a great father and husband, his commitment to family and what that means for making critical career decisions, and his absolutely playful (and oftentimes self-deprecating) demeanor as a man with a clear mission.  One of my favorite moments is Colin sharing the value of grit in his daughter’s lives, "I want my girls to know that they can do hard things. Because let's face it, the world is not always an easy place. There are going to be hard things that they encounter, probably harder than, than maybe you and I did, right?" Here are five fatherhood themes that Colin and I cover on Episode Nineteen of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: Cultural Exposure and Travel: Colin expresses a strong desire to expose his children to various cultures and experiences around the world. He talks about the benefits of traveling and experiencing different ways of life, which he believes will help his daughters become more well-rounded and open-minded individuals. Health and Wellness: The discussion touches on the importance of health, particularly Colin's reflection on his father's health issues and how they impacted his family. This theme is woven into the conversation about how personal health can affect parenting and the overall family dynamic. Athleticism and Sports: Sports play a significant role in the discussion, not just as a part of Colin's background but also in how he views sports as a metaphor for life lessons like teamwork, perseverance, and resilience. He talks about his hopes for his daughters to learn these values through their own experiences in sports or physical activities. Professional Development and Career Changes: Colin shares his and his wife's career journeys, including significant changes and decisions that were influenced by their family goals and personal values. This theme highlights the challenges and considerations that come with aligning professional aspirations with parental responsibilities. Spiritual and Moral Values: The conversation delves into the spiritual and moral values that Colin hopes to instill in his children. Having known Joe since 8th grade, and gone through a similar coming of age story as suburban highschools growing up in the 90s, it’s quite the honor to talk shop explore the juxtaposition of fatherhood. What I truly admire about Joe's approach is his commitment to continuous learning and adaptability, values he champions as crucial for both personal growth and effective parenting. He reminds us that it’s not about having all the answers, something as relatable as occasionally misplacing his car keys underscores his approachable, human side. It is so powerful to hear how the wild natural environment can be the greatest teacher and healer.  In this episode, Donny speaks of the key role of providing our children with “ground truths,” which are first hand real life experiences that then afford key outcomes and attributes of resilience, adaptability, autonomy, confidence, curiosity, and creativity.  You gotta sit down and slow-sip a couple cups of coffee or a tall whiskey for this one. “Mother nature provides all. When we walk into the woods with nothing, we can walk out with everything we need.” - Donny Dust Here are 10 big themes discussed: Fatherhood as a Lifelong Journey: Fatherhood is discussed as an evolving role that changes as children grow. Emphasis is placed on adapting parenting styles to meet the unique needs of each child, underscoring the dynamic nature of fatherhood. Nature as a Classroom for Fatherhood: Donny shares how survival skills and a deep connection with nature not only teach resilience but also serve as foundational lessons for children, directly imparted through shared experiences in the wild. Leading by Example in Fatherhood: The importance of fathers leading by example is a central theme. Donny talks about how his personal choices and approach to life's challenges serve as direct lessons for his sons on handling adversity. Resilience and Adaptation as Fatherhood Virtues: The theme of resilience is crucial in fatherhood. Donny’s discussions about overcoming personal health challenges illustrate the importance of teaching children to be resilient and adaptable. Intentionality in Parenting: We both stress the need for intentional parenting—being actively present and engaged, making conscious choices about parenting styles and the values you wish to impart to your children. Personal Growth and Fostering Independence: The theme of personal growth is tied to fatherhood, with a focus on fostering self-reliance and independence in children, teaching them to carve their own paths based on their passions and interests. Global Perspectives on Fatherhood: Donny provides insights into fatherhood from different cultures, emphasizing the universal pride and responsibility fathers feel toward ensuring their children's future success. Connecting with Nature to Teach and Heal: The conversation often returns to the importance of nature in fatherhood, using it as a tool to teach children about life and provide them with a healing and grounding experience. Legacy and Preparing Children for the Future: This theme revolves around the responsibilities of fatherhood in preparing children to face the world confidently and competently, focusing on the legacy fathers leave through the lessons they impart. The Father’s Role in Navigating Life's Challenges: The theme of surviving and thriving is framed around fatherhood, showcasing how fathers can teach their children not just to survive life's challenges but to thrive amidst them through creativity and resilience. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 15: Featuring Ryan Bramwell

Welcome to Episode Fifteen with Ryan Bramwell. (Ryan’s  Dad Stats: Son - 8 Years Old)  "My son gets to see this, and I communicate to him, you know, sometimes our children sometimes think that daddy is the greatest, and he can do no wrong. But I tell him, no, there's a lot of hard work. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm learning." Over a decade ago, Ryan and I were both in the  bustling creative community in the RiNo Arts District of Denver.  Ryan’s creative agency and my team at Postmodern shared some real estate, so we’d see each other often. Ryan also hosted The Sauce Society with our fellow Denver creative Julie Morrandez , which brought the creative community together for happy hours.  I watched Ryan build a successful agency over the years and then one day realized he’d moved to Steamboat Springs with his family, to reset, to be close to nature, and to uncover his next endeavors. This was coupled with the passing of his brother, and prompted a massive healing and growth journey for Ryan.  I’m honored he sat down to share his story with us. As a new father myself, hearing Ryan’s story just has me wondering how much courage and conviction it must take to start a new life, and to be very intentional with the one life we have. My friend Ryan now is building various brands and products, with one of his recent endeavors being MilkXWhiskey, which is an outdoor family brand. Ryan has developed this rad, rugged and sleek adventure diaper bag and sun protective clothing for both the kiddos and the parents. If you are new to dadding, give it all a look.  Here are 10 big themes that we explore on Episode Fifteen of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: Outdoor Adventures and Lifestyle: Dave and Ryan celebrated their shared passion for outdoor activities like mountain biking and camping as key family bonding experiences. Leadership and Career Transitions: Ryan detailed his shift from the creative services industry to founding Milk and Whiskey, focusing on high-end outdoor gear for families. Fatherhood Challenges and Rewards: Ryan discussed the unique challenges and joys of raising his eight-year-old son with patience and intentional parenting. Balancing Work and Family Life: They explored the difficulty of balancing a demanding career with fatherhood responsibilities and the importance of being present. Teaching Life Skills Through Outdoor Activities: Ryan highlighted how outdoor activities teach his son valuable life skills like resilience, problem-solving, and hard work. Emotional and Mental Well-being: They emphasized the importance of mental health, dealing with emotions, and maintaining a positive outlook, especially after personal losses. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 14: Featuring Shawn Michael Walker

Welcome to Episode Fourten with Shawn Michael Walker. (Shawn’s  Dad Stats: 17-year-old, a 15-year-old, and a 9-year-old)  If you sat down with my friend Shawn Michael Walker and he could only give you one piece of advice, it would  be “don’t burn the day away.” It’s this mantra that he truly lives out as an individual, as a father to three and a husband, and one that has come to define his family’s ways. It’s fun to see and fun to hear about.  Shawn and I were young bucks in high school together, so it’s fun to walk down memory lane and contrast that against his fatherhood insights. There’s an aspect of our discussion that I think everyone can relate to - during the COVID years, how did you spend your time? Did you make it useful and productive, or did you waste it away binge watching your tenth mini-series on NETFLIX? The approach Shawn and his family took led to family guitar jam sessions, and the story is just the perfect example of what Shawn revealed to me: That we as parents are memory makers for our young ones.  Perfectly timed drops on this one, as we head into Memorial Day weekend.  Here are 10 themes that we explore on Episode Fourteen of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: Starting Young as a Father - Challenges of early fatherhood. Creating Family Memories - Importance of shared experiences. Value of Good Influences - Impact of positive friendships. Adventurous Parenting - Embracing fun, adventurous activities. Life Lessons for Children - Teaching resilience and independence. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 11: Featuring George Pietrogallo

Welcome to Episode Eleven with George Pietrogallo (George’s Dad Stats: Son - 33, Daughter - 31) My first interaction with George was the night before a client workshop in Detroit, Michigan, last year. We found a sports bar near the hotel and bellied up to the bar for some dinner and then engaged with a few locals in small talk about local sports, family, politics, business, and life. It was as though we were on the set of Cheers just making friends with everyone, and yapping with the bartender. I was amazed at the gift of gab that George possessed and his ability to connect with everyone there. And it’s no surprise George could weave a tale, as he’s had a multifaceted career that spanned several decades and industries. He began his professional journey in the media, working as a journalist for about 27 years, primarily in television. During his tenure in journalism, George was recognized as an award-winning journalist and enjoyed the dynamic nature of covering various stories and topics, which provided him with a broad and enriching perspective on different aspects of life and society. After his career in media, George transitioned to public and government affairs where he worked for a large energy company in a role that utilized his skills in communication and public engagement. His work in this sector allowed him to continue influencing and interacting with a wide range of issues and people, albeit from a different standpoint than his journalistic days. This combination of experiences in fast-paced environments honed his abilities in leadership and communication, skills he later applied to his roles as a coach and facilitator in these areas. George is a great mentor and friend and you will enjoy his guiding principles on fatherhood! Here are 10 big themes that we explore on Episode Ten of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: 1. Importance of Communication: Why is mastering effective communication crucial not only in professional settings but also in personal relationships and parenting? 4. Role of Media and Social Media: What challenges do new forms of media, especially social media, present to family dynamics and child development? 5. Values and Parenting Philosophy: How can intentional, relentless love and being a role model instill the right values in children? 6. Support Systems and Community: What is the role of community and support networks in enhancing personal and professional life? 9. Dealing with Life’s Challenges: How should one navigate life's adversities including maintaining work-life balance and dealing with personal setbacks? 10. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 10: Featuring Andrew Schremp

Welcome to Episode Ten with Andrew Schremp (Andrew’s Dad Stats: Two Boys, 2.5 years and 8 months.)  Andrew is the kind of man you want shoulder-to-shoulder when you are doing anything of importance; throwing a frisbee, building a deck, growing a business, figuring out life, listening to Randy Rogers Band at the Troubador in West Hollywood, or piloting a rocket to Mars. You know, stuff like that. Most of which we have done together, or will do together. Andrew and I became fast friends in the trenches of the insurance business back in 2006. I had the good fortune of being in the early stages of the firm's leadership path and serving as the Collegiate Unit Director. I recruited interns, trained and coached them, and did ride-alongs with them to meetings.  Thinking back, I was just as much a newbie to the game as he was for all intents and purposes, I just had learned to enjoy the taste of rejection more than he might have. Andrew was tenacious and we made the game fun, together.  That summer set the stage for a life long friendship, one where we both now channel our personal and professional tenacity in pursuit of raising healthy, happy babies into playful and productive grown ups. We’ve both struck gold in our life with amazing partners, and are on the early side of dad-hood. It will be fun to share our parenting experiences as life unfolds. Listening to Andrew’s take on fatherhood has me so fired up to be a solid dad… Here are 10 big themes that we explore on Episode Ten of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: Is Fatherhood the Ultimate Transformational Journey? Can Mentorship Forge Lifelong Bonds Beyond Professional Realms? How Do You Strike the Perfect Balance Between Career Ambitions and Family Obligations? Do the Values Instilled by Our Parents Determine Our Success in Fatherhood? Is the Digital Age a Threat to Traditional Parenting? Are Family Traditions the Backbone of a Strong Family Culture? Does Fatherhood Necessitate a Reevaluation of Life's Priorities? WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 9: Featuring Mike Faulhaber

Welcome to Episode Nine with Mike Faulhaber (Mike’s Dad Stats: Two Boys, Three Girls, ages 15 to 29, two biological and three step children.) My friendship with Mike has spanned nearly 20 years, beginning with us both joining the same recruiting class for the financial services firm called Northwestern Mutual. The nature of the industry and the role as a financial representative had us in the trenches of cold calling, sales, advisory, business building, constant rejection, and a daily grind that was needed to deliver on the high expectations of clients and supervisors. It was in that arena, which was at times very rewarding, at times overwhelming, and undoubtedly a formidable experience for us both, that we developed a great friendship. Shared misery and shared visions of profound success will do that to a few young bucks. What I’ve loved about Mike is that nearly every time we see each other or talk on the phone, he has this funny little saying, which he declares with a smile on his face, “Dave Momper, you are my hero!” This is obviously very generous of Mike to say to me, and a playful habit we developed early on, but it dawned on me that it represents exactly who Mike is; Mike is rooting everyone on, and doing so all the time. Mike is an extractor of greatness and potential, and he doesn’t hesitate to showcase what he sees in you so you can see it too. If you are lucky enough to work with him, have him as your financial advisor, or just be acquainted, it comes with the territory that Mike truly thinks you are unstoppable, that you can achieve great heights, and that he has your back in that very pursuit. You’ll learn in our conversation all the different skill sets, credentials, and the ethos that Mike has obtained over the years to be a champion for his family, for himself, for his clients and for the community around him. Here are 10 big themes that we explore on Episode Eight of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: 1. Fatherhood Journey: How does embracing the challenges of fatherhood transform a man's perspective on life and himself? 2. Professional Growth and Development: In what ways can a career in the financial services industry serve as a platform for profound personal and professional growth? 3. Mindset and Personal Development: How does shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset catalyze success and fulfillment in both professional life and parenting? 4. Impact of Early Experiences: What role do early career choices and military service play in shaping one's resilience and approach to challenges later in life? 5. Value of Lifelong Learning: Why is the commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement critical for navigating the complexities of modern life and work? 6. Coaching and Leadership: How does taking on a coaching role, whether in a professional setting or within the family, redefine leadership and influence? 7. Navigating Change and Adversity: What lessons do personal adversities and professional challenges teach about growth, resilience, and the human spirit? 8. Family Dynamics and Blended Families: How do the dynamics of divorce, remarriage, and blending families contribute to a richer, though more complex, understanding of love and relationships? 9. Intentionality in Life and Parenting: How does living and parenting with intentionality shape the legacy one leaves behind? 10. Legacy and Impact: What does it mean to build a legacy through actions and values, and how can one ensure their impact resonates with future generations? WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 8: Featuring Dan Gomer

Welcome to Episode Eight with Dan Gomer (Dan’s Dad Stats: Two Kiddos, Ages 13 and 10 ) Dan once cooked me and a friend a gourmet breakfast in the middle of central Colorado, with a massive camping griddle, at the foot these magical granite hills which perched up to the east of us, and which provided a westerly gaze out towards Hartzel, Co. Later that eve, that very vantage point proved to be one of the most memorable sunset experiences we could ask for. As the evening approached, the skies to the north dropped down a slow lumbering lightning storm that moved in the opposite direction of the sun’s trajectory. The sky was aglow in sunset and lightning and vivid colors changed from moment to movement. It was an absolute stunner. See, Dan Gomer did that. He didn’t control the skies so much, but he brought together the right ingredients - a gathering, of people, in an epic spot - and then that happened. That’s my sense of Dan. He’s a collector of visionaries and business builders. He brings people together, in the right ways, and then amazing things can happen. That’s one of Dan’s gifts as a coach, and mentor, and a successful team leader in the real estate industry. You’ll find some amazing insight in Dan’s experience as an eighth grade teacher, and how he parlayed that role into some dos and don'ts when he embarked on fatherhood. Dan is a true contemporary of mine, and we’ve sat down and shared our philosophies on business, brand building, leadership, coaching, elk hunting, and now fatherhood. Here are 10 big themes that we explore on Episode Eight of WHOA DAD! WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 7: Featuring Wylie Nelson

Welcome to Episode Seven with Wylie Nelson (Wylie’s Dad Stats: Two Kiddos, Ages Seven and Five ) I’ve known Wylie and his wife since the early days of being “grown ups” in our twenties when weekends in Denver were spent running around Wash Park, or racing up to the then-mostly-uncrowded slopes of the mountains. On any weeknight, you might find us riding bikes to neighborhood bars despite our next-day-full-time-job obligations. We’ve traveled to Mexico together to watch friends get married, and we’ve been able to watch each other grow up and take on great careers. In the mid-2000s, Wylie and I, along with a few others, produced an annual charity fundraiser for breast cancer called Slide-for-a-Cure, which involved a couple hundred of us enjoying an adult-size slip-n’-slide, and piles of catering from Qdoba. #youngphilanthropists Wylie studied mechanical engineering in his undergrad, and then doubled down to get a law degree and an MBA, which led him into telecom. He now finds himself on a team focused on reinventing infrastructure to support the country’s energy transition and the digital demands of our modern world. If you ever get the chance to catch a few runs with him, Wylie will tell you he’s the best skier on the mountain, and he may be, but he for sure is a wonderfully humble dad to his kids and you’ll see that show up on this interview. Here are 10 big questions that we explore on Episode Seven of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: 1. How does engaging children in active and adventurous activities contribute to their development? 2. In what ways can sports, such as skiing, teach children valuable lessons in resilience? 3. How can parents find the right balance between being firm and supportive to ensure their children are resilient but not overly sheltered? 4. What role do positive male figures play in shaping approaches to fatherhood? 5. How can parents aim to raise their children to be kind, courteous, and capable of making a positive impact in the world? 6. How can children be taught to navigate social dynamics and deal with bullying effectively? 7. Why is encouraging children to solve their own problems and be independent important for their growth? 8. What strategies can couples employ to maintain a strong marital relationship after having children? 9. How does becoming a parent reshape one's identity and perspective on life? 10. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 6: Featuring RJ Owen

Welcome to Episode Six with RJ Owen (RJ’s Dad Stats: Four kids, elementary school-aged through high school) RJ Owen is a UX Designer, a coffee nut, a Physics major, and a modest CrossFitter. He wouldn’t admit it, but he’s one of the funniest people I know. After 10 years of working together with RJ to build the Denver chapter of CreativeMornings, and serving the Denver creative community, it’s fair to say that I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of hours of heart-to-hearts with this good man. RJ and I served as each other’s co-hosts for an aggregate of six+ years out of the 10, and in that time we learned to dance, and riff, and be playful characters as we set the stage for brilliant speakers. It’s RJ’s stable of wisdom, his thoughtfulness, his critical and creative thinking, and his generosity that have had me in deep admiration for a decade. On fatherhood: “I think the small things are the hardest -- I am always trying to be more patient, interruptible, calm, welcoming, and joyful with my kids. I think most of what it takes, maybe all of it, is being a steady source of present, calm, and supporting love for your children.” Here are six key questions that we explore on Episode Six of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: 1. What’s the value of being “interruptible” as a father? 2. How does parenthood bring up and accelerate our own personal growth opportunities? (and how to make time for that growth) 3. What’s the shift in the parenting mindset required when our kids go from middle childhood, into the teenage years? 4. How does our own upbringing and childhood experience shape our parenting style? 5. Where and how can we “throw our kids into the mix” of life, to teach them critical life and leadership lessons? 6. How do we teach our kids to know and then fight for what they believe in, and in turn make the choice to take on agency and responsibility in their life? Undoubtedly, you’ll see why I admire RJ and how much he adores his role as a father and a husband. Welcome to Episode 5 with Ben Seymour (Ben’s Dad Stats: Two boys - age 13, age 7) "I don't want to be legendary. We are not doing this for glory." - Says the most humble man I know, aka: burday burd, aka: Ben Seymour. My history with Ben Seymour is rich. For two years around 2012 we spearheaded business growth, with him as our Executive Producer and me as the head of Business Development, for a creative content agency in Denver called Postmodern. We roamed the RINO neighborhood north of downtown before the cool kids conquered it. We’ve won awards together, we’ve lost business pitches, we been in the woods camping, we’ve shared many a whiskey drink, many a coffee, and we’ve shared the stories of our lives with each other for over a decade. Clearly Ben is a man of depth and wisdom to me, and after you hear this podcast you will be struck by the same (and an epic mustache just adds gravitas to his insights). It’s such good fortune to find a friend like Ben, to watch him grow up as a father, to watch him raise two amazing children, and to watch him build not only a life but also a business with his wife, Trista. Ben is Montana born, lived and worked in LA for his early career, and found his way to the Mile High City to build a life and raise a family. Here are five key questions we explore on Episode Five of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!: 1. What is the difference between the role of father and the role of dad, and why does it matter? 2. How does one balance personal identity and growth with the responsibilities of fatherhood? 3. What role does leadership play in fatherhood, and how can it be cultivated in children? 4. How can parents navigate the challenges of technology and screen time with their children? 5. What strategies can fathers use to maintain a strong partnership and co-parenting relationship in the face of parenting challenges? It’s fun to hear Ben talk about his dad, his stepdad, and his cousin as key mentors and guides along the path of fatherhood. WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 2: Featuring Austin Liberato

Episode Two is here! Allow me to introduce my once long ago part-time-supposed roommate, Austin Liberato. Austin is a professional photographer, a world traveler, and a Texan by birth but a Coloradan by heart. He is often found on surf board and bike, catching the rhythm of the elements. I adore this guy and it’s fun to see how our lives have changed since we first met, both be wandering bachelors, using the same house as a basecamp for life’s adventures and as we joke about, supposedly living together. I love how Austin describes his son as his favorite person. You’ll hear Austin describe how half way through his sons nap, he’s often eager for his son to wake up, wondering “is he up yet, or what?” just awaiting more time to be in awe of his little guy. Take note of Austin’s current vantage on the role of dad. Austin is on the brink of going from a father of a toddler son, to a father of a son and a daughter, as he and Emily anticipate their second child. It was fun to explore the difference in mindset and approach that Austin and Em are envisioning, as they grow their family.
