The Matt Duffin Show - Welcome Back TBI'er

The places I've seen with fresh,, alive eyes do to Brain Injury Survival over the past week, will be discussed.  No production, just me and my BICS "Bible' and expressions of twin-tbi-traveling partner (neither gay, thank you) Branden Stackhouse.  I haven't unpacked much yet, I'll find notes, pictures, and Amy Sue Root's strength as a fellow BI Survivor (and more, much more health complications).    Pikes Peak, we came, I fell, they conquered.  I was close enough, Noah Root and Branden secured the advancing party to the top -  I danced on your ass though, my TBI still has Peak's too.  I did have to aquire Amy Sue's personal Nursing Assistance - Sue Root.  Borrowed and bought some Medical Marijuana Salve - legally, to sooth the pain.  Coach Renforth woulda been proud of my 20-foot diving tackle on Ol' Mighty Oak - stopped the damned thing in its track.  OUCH, sure.  Shattered shoulder took aa hammering, Sue and the Miracle Salve recovered me.  Oh, that and a long series of bandages.  Then I leagally smoked a joint 3-days later.  Talk about Rocky Mountain High.  Plus, God didn't allow me heaven's gate just yet - just reminded me how exciting life still is with work to be done.  I love my society and its caring ways.    God had to smack me in the head pretty hard to get my attention.  As the challenging doors are opened by Angles, I see how it works.  (424)  243-9540, call me tonight.  I'm on the fly with a fist full of thoughts from being out West..  The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly...   Jim "Gomer Pyle' Nabors, hit it, Sir - "Back home again, in Indiana......"

Another Fork in the Road: Caregiver/Survivor, Sandra Williams and a Drunk Driver

The loss of independence is what Sandra Williams misses most since her brain injury. She misses running and having energy to do all the things she wants to do. The biggest tip Sandra can offer other survivors is "Don't listen to negative comments or even employers that tell you you can't do the job. Listen to your heart, your soul and fight for yourself and others. It will keep you going." Sandra will talk about what keeps her going on "Another Fork in the Road." Please Tune In! Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College plans, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slip from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." The Matt Duffin Show - Fall Back? Relapse or Time?

Change your clocks, and your Smoke Detector batteries.  I don't care for the first part too much, but as a reminder for the later its sure nice - if folks will do so.  "Spring Ahead"?  OK, we can try, as long as the direction is forward.  Fall Back?  Surely you don't want me to think about RELAPSE.  A relapse will happen "at will" with Brain Disruptions bouncing like they've been sprung, one reason I don't like to FALL BACK.  The 'extra' hour of sleep?  I'm not going anywhere, I can sleep in.  In our world, its confusing, occasionnally perplexing.     Then.  there are the RELASPES due to enviromental situations.  Like drug or alchol use and abuse (its called Adult Beverages for a reason - Be Adult.  Its a mind set.  How to correct that mind set?  I dunno, call and we can talk about it.  We'll touch on Brain Injury Coping Skills, of course.  I will discuss the ground work of putting together a television show; left over and CHECKED candy from Halloween; one more clock change reminder, and discuss my Lincoln Golden Eagles football team.    Mr Stackhouse and I are taking TMDS on the road, with a visit into Colorado and Nebraska on the schedule of the 7-state trip.  (And he wants to go to Vegas.  Not sure there.  Budget$ to abide - SSDI guy, ya know.  Still, Colorado.  Somethnig tells me I'll be "Rocky Mountain High, Colorado:   For a Class 'A' school in Indiana, we made national news this weekend.  And though LHS victory over Tri HIGH puts the Eagles in the Sectional Championship game - the score was NEVER the story, but confused supporters, a shattered communty and unchecked untruths from the Local FOX (boo) TV Station..  Lincoln won 35-24, btw....     (424) 243-9540

Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. The Dark Side of Brain Injury - surviving a decade

It is 10 years today, that a drunk driver changed my life forever. The decade has seemed like an eternity that has kept my heart in a vise squeezing, squeezing every day. The majority of the people who were in my life are no more, and even though I have been blessed with so many people in my life, life is hard. Life is lonely, dark and empty many days, the inability of my brain to process like it should leaving people shaking their heads as well as me. How one day can be good and then the next bad plagued by headaches and inadequacies of the soul for being who I am. I have learned more about life in the last 10 than i did the first 30 years. I have learned about people and how they are. I have learned so much about the dark nature of people, more than I ever wanted to learn. But this is the world that I now live in, the world that I must survive, for me it has very much been an apocalypse, but I feel more like the zombie than human.  But this is the world I must find a way to live in, and survivors must learn to live life, be who we are meant to be.  I can’t imagine another 10 years but here we go, love to hear others who live in what seems to be the apocalypse together we will more than survive.

The Matt Duffin Show - Evil Indiana &/or 'Ghostbusters'

With due respect to Bill Murray, GHOSTBUSTERS visits the Downtown Milton Studio.  Kevin Mathews and Steve Bentley (aka GRIM and Sandman) started a business called Evill Indiana, exploring the 'true spriits' of departed Indiana Legends and Super Natural.  Or, Ghosts!     Kevin doubles by day as a Behavior Counselor for Children.  Not sure what Steve does - hunts spirits for one.  I'll allow them to explain the Super Natural, the visions of Spirits and watch all the Angels poor from my body.  I hit my head this morning, pretty hard.  THAT was Evil Indiana.  Punch made, bring your own Spirits, Pumkin' cookies on the self.  Help your self, but I'd knock on the door first.  Ya just never know whats behind the shadow in Milton....(or at least in my house)   I have returned from the dead.  Say that six times, real fast.  Scary?  I yam what I yam.......Boo!

As an offensive tackle, Kyle has had more than his share of concussions - leading to seizures and various brain-injury complications, which have adversely affected his life. Kyle is picking up the pieces and assembling his life-puzzle by speaking out about brain injury. He does this through his music, The Kyle Turley Band, and his recent documentary, “The United States of Football.”   Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. The Matt Duffin Show - Think Before Speaking

Doctor Frasier Crane (my hero) would often answer his Talk Radio Callers by offering "I'm listening''.  As a Psychiatrist that would be his job - to listen.  Listening, then thinking, then speaking.  And, the good doctor would often speak, and speak, and speak, and, well, Ros would take a commercial break.   As a TBI Survivor myself (circa 2008), I speak.  Told by many I'm very social, and can talk.  And talk.  And, well, Sister Mary Elephant would tell me to "SHUUUUT UP!  thank you". I'll explain how controled speaking is taught to survivors, as many of us often have difficulty getting our words across, at least in our broken minds.  We'll play some, or a lot, or Rock 'N Roll.  And, if you will call (424) 243-9540 we can talk, share, discuss, discover.  That's why I listening.     We'll learn some response tricks too.  It is not a Cheap Trick, but free to listen in.  "I want you to want me..."

Dream Catchers - Overcoming Heartache and sadness - Les Paul

Dream Catchers - Overcoming Heartache and Sadness - Les Paul Often no matter how well intended a person who did their very best to tell the truth and do the right thing they get kicked in the teeth. A person with a brain injury or disability can be shunned upon, looked down on, and treated very badly by their Friends and Family members and the community just for doing the right thing. That’s just a matter of fact! That being said having a brain injury or any other disability can make things like this much harder on the survivor because there is long a history of abuse and neglect in our community so tonight for anyone who might be having a hard time lets work on strategies to become over comers and not be victims Showing your true colors Seek help Get Counseling Realizing it’s not your fault Taking charge of your destiny Finding new hope and purpose Catching your Dreams Open floor

The Matt Duffin Show - "Blah, Blah, TBI Blah's''

Full Definition of BLAH 1:  also blah–blah \-?blä\ :  silly or pretentious chatter or nonsense 2:  plural [perhaps influenced in meaning by blasé] :  a feeling of boredom, lethargy, or general dissatisfaction       You understand the definition of TBI.  Do I ''blah blah blah?''  Depends on who is listening to what.  Do I listen to ''Blah Blah Blah?''  Usually, but I'm Support Group trained.  Uh, there is some 'blahing' going on inside to walls, at times.  But, in today's new world, I lilsten - wether folks think I am or not.  I listen, and I can be slow to respond.  Slowing down, helps us cope with BI's.  Survivor and Caregiverr alike.   Webster's definition #2, no that reacches the TBI level of life.  We go to sleep sad, serious and bored.  We wake up, dreamless and bored.  Whatever the day may bring, as Survivors we will appear or simply be bored.  Staring, at nothing, or something, just staring.  We stare.  For many reasons, we stare.  Want to know how to avoid 'staring' all day, or a big part of it?  So do I - call me and explain to us how you avoid THE BLAH's...     (424)243-9540  10 pm - 1 am EDT  (7 pm PT)

Flawed To Fantastic with Guest David Kracke an Expert on Concussion Litigation

David Kracke says "I have developed an expertise in understanding and utilizing the legislative process for the greater good. Two areas of my legislative work stand out: Laws requiring mandatory concussion education and return to play protocols for our young athletes, and laws requiring protection of our environment." In 2008, David was part of the team that wrote and passed Max's Law, which along with Zach's Law in Washington, was the first law in the nation to require concussion education for high school coaches. Max's Law also requires return to play protocols to prevent the tragedy of Second Impact Syndrome (SIS), a devastating condition that occurs when a person suffers two concussions in rapid succession. There is now a Max's Law equivalent in all fifty states. In 2012, David wrote what is now known as Jenna's Law. Working with Dr. Jim Chesnutt of Oregon Health Sciences University and Oregon State Senator Elizabeth Steiner-Hayward, we created a law that requires all youth sport coaches, regardless of league affiliation, to receive concussion training and the implementation of mandatory return to play protocols. Jenna's Law is a sweeping concussion education law that promises to reduce the incidence of SIS and to allow all young athletes in Oregon to fully recover from a concussion before returning to play. The Dark Side of Brain Injury with Craig Sicilia

The Dark Side of Brain Injury Hosted by: Craig Sicilia Brain Injury has created new opportunities and a new conciseness that I could have never imagined.  It brought a different kind of hope and salvation.  As good a person as I might have been before my brain injury I don’t think the gates of heaven would have been open to me, and even now I have things that need to be let go. All of these major changes came with a cost, a huge cost that as well I could not imagine.  To lose all that I was in such a rapid destruction of who I was.  Lost my marriage, friends, job, home and myself.  It shock my faith and challenged everything I once believed to be fact, or at least my fact. And now to live a life as this new person, on what seems to be a personally lonely road, though I am incredible social I find myself very much alone at times I wish I wasn’t.  I find my opinions and goals in conflict with many.  But at the same time I believe I have learned to see the value in everyone.  Even though I am learning not everyone can play in the sandbox or should play in it. This show will explore some of those dark lonely times, those times for the good of this cause I would spend in solitude never allowing myself to get to close to someone.  The price and the rewards, the pain and the joy.  I know many have similar stories to share I invite you on to share your dark times and more importantly the tools to move beyond those dark times.

The Matt Duffin Show - TBI Isn't Funny with Dr. William Jarvis

William Jarvis was on the TMDS 'back in the day', where we discussed "The Jarvis Method" of TBI Recovery at home each and every day.  Dr. Jarvis has developed the Jarvis Rehabilitation Method (JRM) in 2008 to create internal motivation to improve after a brain injury.   Dr. Jarvis was in hospitals for eighteen months and has used these strategies for many years after his own severe TBI in 2000. Dr. Jarvis teaches improvement strategies that reinforce a person’s motivation.  This method is based on his experience as a TBI Survivor, a teacher, a principal, college professor in Education, and co-leader of a TBI Support Group.  His academic study in Education and personal understanding of the effects of a brain injury has provided an opportunity to apply motivational strategies to foster improvement during home rehabilitation.   A 'Magic Man' at heart and practice, the good doctor likes to see folks laugh, as well as seriously do his TBI gift of teaching and life coaching Brain Injury Survivors.  Though is regular hummor is geared towards recovery, you KNOW mine is to.  I'm just more of a PG-13 guy.  OK, R occasionally.     Call in towards the beginning of the show, to listen and talk with Dr. Jarvis.  (424) 243-9540.  Let's talk humor, it creates social skills.  Rolls from there.

The Matt Duffin Show - Last Week, The Weeks Before, or Tomorrow?

We often 'wish THIS hadn't happened - this TBI sucks so'.  You are absolutely correct, the sudden life surviving then chaanging events was a LOT to take.   Was.  Every second gets ''better''' with deeper understandings.  Serious, sad.  If you are like me, that's enough of that.  The day just started!  Every day, that is.  They all begin sad and serious, hurts, take meds, burn one, feel better - go into the day happy.  If only the ''regular - non-chronicallly ill citizens could see inside our body."  No, wait, I wish a Brain Injury on NO ONE.  Well, maybe a few Iranian Militants.  But that was my past, or is my past.  Yesterday, which is gone (in case you are looking for it) leads into tomorrow.  The only day most Survivors look forward too.  Next week is too far away, as we well know.  And outside of experience, history & memory's - there is nothing yesterday can do for us.  Stop looking towards the traumatic past - it happend.  That's what 'yesterday' says, anyway.   Tomorrow?  Is Monday, I'm looking real forard to that.  The rest of the days ahead?  Oh, I do have a schedule of appointments.  The rest or wants and dreams.  I can always hold that thought, without getting confused.  Now, remembering what I was thinking about....

Another Fork in the Road: Janiece Naber Martindale - Caregivers Need Time Too!

Janiece Naber Martindale knows a lot about caregiving. She is a two-time caregiver – first for her husband, then for an elderly friend. Janiece says that her caregiving responsibilities were very different for each person. Janiece and I are going to examine what it takes to be a good caregiver. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." Life is all about choices! To learn more about me, please visit my blogs. Surviving Traumatic Brain Injury Blog: survivingtraumaticbraininjury.com Donna's Blog: donnaodonnellfigurski.wordpress.com

The Matt Duffin Show - 'Omega & Alpha'

The term Alpha and Omega comes from the phrase "I am the alpha and the omega" (Koiné Greek: "?γ? τ? Α κα? τ? Ω"), an appellation of Jesus.   Alpha.  It's the Greek's first letter of the Alphabet, with Omega being the last.  Or, A and Z for you Englisher's.  Following my devastating accident, I was considered 'Omega - at the end of my life.'     In actuality, thru much work (and I contributed too) my Omega became my Alpha.  Life changed, yes. So did I.  We learn to adjust in life, and yes, our TBI's is a big one.     Word's you hate, but work - Baby Steps.  Create an Alpha.   Which, BTW, let's Omega a very rough season of TMDS, and Alpha next week.  Until then - (424) 243-9540 tonight 10-1...

Dream Catchers - Breaking the code of cognitive disorders - Les Paul Morgan

What is a cognitive disorder after a traumatic brain injury? A cognitive disorder is when your brain does not work correctly after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI often injures the front part of your brain, which is the part of the brain used for thinking and memory. You may have difficulty doing the same things that you did before the TBI. Symptoms of a cognitive disorder? Your symptoms can get better, stay the same, or get worse over time. They may go away and come back again. You may have any of the following: Mental: Trouble paying attention, Trouble thinking clearly or doing 2 tasks at once, Memory problems, Decreased learning speed and ability Physical: Trouble sleeping or fatigue, Changes in your appetite, Poor balance, Headaches or pain, Problems with your ability to smell, taste, hear, or see Trouble staying warm or cool Emotional: Anxiety, Depression, Impatience Trouble controlling your feelings, actions, and behavior  How are cognitive disorders diagnosed? Your brain heals for many months after a TBI. Healthcare providers may need to test you regularly to monitor your brain function. You may need any of the following: An awareness test may be used to measure how well you move or speak. Tests may also be done to check your memory. A CT scan or MRI may show damage in your brain. You may be given contrast dye to help the damage show up better in the pictures. Tell the healthcare provider if you have ever had an allergic reaction to contrast dye. Do not enter the MRI room with anything metal. Metal can cause serious injury. Tell the healthcare provider if you have any metal in or on your body. How are cognitive disorders treated? Treatment depends on the severity of your condition. You may need medicines to help decrease your symptoms, such as headaches or pain.

The Matt Duffin Show - Losing Labor Day?

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.   The end of the 'Summer' season, the begining of fall.  Pools close, school's open.  Laborers take a break.  Laborers.  Hummmm.  That my friends, is a down trodden prospect of America today, compared to what?  The building of America, the melting pot of a growing society.  That was then, today is '''sitting around, fooling the government into free assistance and cash."   For those like me, I dispise the folks doing so.  If I could work, I would.  I want to.  Many TBI Survivors can't do Labor, can't even promise daily effort.  Promise to give my best, we can do that.  ESPECIALLY if the brain issue is less than a dozen years.  Uh, as recalled - ''there's a lot of life to learn, starting over at Day 1.''   True Labor.  Also, we'll Rock (of course), talk (I hope), visit a Coping Skill or two, and ramble with sense.

Another Fork in the Road: Where Did All My Friends Go?

Losing relationships, both family and friends, is a common result of brain injury and it is devastating to survivors and their caregivers, as well. Troop and survivor, Juliet Madsen, and Lisabeth Mackall, therapist and caregiver for her husband, join me to discuss the topic of "Where Have All My Friends Gone." We'll examine the reasons why some people just can't stick it out and try to shed some light on how folks can keep their relationships alive with their brain-injured friends.
