Originally from Pinkerton, Ohio with a stint in Louisville, Kentucky, Tony has his hand in many areas of local music. He is a force in the music world, leading bands, composing captivating pieces, and mastering a multitude of instruments. Her work has recently appeared in New Ohio Review, Pleiades, Massachusetts Review, and Shenandoah. She is the winner of a Sheila-Na-Gig Editor’s Choice Award for Fiction. Her zine about her experiences undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, Fine, Considering, is available from Rinky Dink Press (2019). Originally from Lorain, Ohio, Martell plays quite an active role in multiple boards within his current community of Portsmouth, Ohio. As a business owner of Elm Street Photography, he frequently utilizes his talents for many local charitable organizations.His long list of volunteer efforts led him to an appointment for the Portsmouth City Council and during his time there, he worked tirelessly to obtain status and promote the Portsmouth Art Commission. Martell has offered support and encouragement as he served as a mentor for the Juvenile Drug Court. Within the Watch Me Grow Ohio program, he helped to establish a community garden to educate area youth on horticulture methods. As a member of the Shawnee State University Athletic Board, he shares his leadership skills with team members. He was instrumental in obtaining an outdoor public wall for the Portsmouth Street Art Project for individual artists to paint everything from graffiti to original wall designs. In 2023, due to his passion for community engagement, Martell became the recipient of the prestigious Jeremy Burnside Community Spirit Award. Currently Martell is Co-director of The Trillium Project, an organization dedicated to street art on a large scale with a project called Second Glance and other community art projects. He is also on the Board of Directors for Southern Ohio Folklife. This week on The Bloom Where You’re Planted Podcast, we sit down with professor and author, James B. Wells. James is a Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the School of Justice Studies in the College of Justice & Safety at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). He has an A.A., B.A., and M.S. in Criminal Justice, as well as a Ph.D. in Research, Measurement, and Statistics. In addition to having over forty peer- reviewed publications in areas related to adult corrections and juvenile justice, he has authored or co-authored multiple books and over 150 research reports for various local, state, and federal agencies. As a result of learning the circumstances of his father’s 1965 death in Vietnam are still classified, Dr. Wells has been on a quest to learn about the father he never got a chance to know, to recreate certain events in his life, to discover the truth about his death, to attempt to find peace for him and his family, and to write about it. This week on the Bloom Where You’re Planted podcast we sit down with Louisville, KY artist and author Jill Baker. Jill's paintings are of peaceful landscapes or fantastical imaginary places or things, created in her own style. She travels to New York, France, Italy, Southeast Asia or the Islands to paint and exhibit her work. She has exhibited her collages and oil paintings throughout the world in major venues in Paris (Palais des Congres), Florence (Palazzo Strozzi), Seoul, South Korea (U.S. Embassy), New York (Goethe Haus, among others) and elsewhere.She also writes and has always used her writing to support her art financially during sparse times. She has published a novel, My Turn, and a short travel book entitled Elba Journal. She has written feature articles for newspapers and popular magazines, including articles on art, religion, the Olympics, homemaking topics and the military among other topics. Her book of poetry is called Poems of Accord.As an artist, Jill has taught art on the university level for 17 years, and was on the staff of the Art Department at the University of Southern Indiana.
