Episode 123: The Three of Pentacles

04/11/2025 24 min 56 sec

Finally, we’re at the Three of Pentacles, Melissa’s favorite card. In the Waite Smith deck, three figures look up at an archway. Each person is dressed differently and participates in the structure differently. Without the architect, there is no way. Without the monk, there is no need. Without the craftsman, there is no physical act. As we look at the other cards, this one represents the resource of resources of all the threes.  Homework: Consider your resources.  Melissa has changed her rates to help those who are not baseline. So, visit her website and sign up for a reading now.  Catch Hilary and Melissa on Instagram for live readings. Follow them both and get a quick reading. Decks Mentioned Hilary: The Accurate AF Tarot, first edition by Prism + Fleur Jaymi: The Buffy Tarot (mini tin edition) by Casey Gilly and Karl James Mountford Melissa: Shadowscapes Tarot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law and Barbara Moore Resources Mentioned MeUndies   Do you like what you hear? Episode 122: Only The Three of Swords Knows Such Grief

03/28/2025 27 min 4 sec

Good grief, we’re at the three of Swords. We have a floating heart in the middle of a rainstorm on the image in the Smith Waite deck. It’s being pierced with three swords. It’s a bleak card of heartbreak and emotion; many of us hate seeing this card and giving the hard news to clients. Like The Tower card, this card is striking. It’s one of the most emotional cards in a suit that lends itself to air, communication, and braininess. Homework: Uncertainty is hard, and the sword's resources lead to good communication. Where do you carry your swords in your heart, and how can you safely pull them out to bring joy back into your world?   Decks Mentioned Melissa: Prairie Tarot by Robin Atot Jaymi: Wisdom of Pooh, first edition Rue and Vervain (link takes you to all the Wisdom of Pooh offerings) Hilary: Fountain Tarot by Jonathan Saiz, Jason Gruhl, and Andi Todaro Resources Mentioned Heart of Glass by Blondie  French Kiss (the movie) World Gone Wrong Podcast Episode 103-Why does your Dad know so much about body-snatchers This is where Jaymi got her use of baseline versus being “just okay.” They discuss this around the 15:10 mark. However, Jaymi recommends the whole series because it’s just fun.   Do you like what you hear? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Episode 121: Community is Important in the Three of Cups

03/14/2025 55 min 54 sec

This episode was recorded live in front of a YouTube audience. Friendship is magical and powerful. We can give and receive hope from those we care about. It’s time to build community and keep the energy flowing equally. Hilary calls it the girl power card, and often, the reverse side relates it back to gossip. Homework: Follow us on Youtube and reach out to your communities. We have your backs. Stay safe, everyone!   Decks Mentioned Jaymi: World of Warcraft Tarot by Joseph Lacroix, Surfside 3D Studio; and written by Ian Flynn. Hilary: Tarot of the Sidhe by Emily Carding. Keyword: jubilance. Episode 120: Fanny Pack Snacks with the Three of Wands

02/28/2025 32 min 9 sec

We’re kicking off the minor threes with OUR favorite, the wands. In the Waite Smith deck, a figure looks over the water to see the ships. And apparently, they have a fanny pack (and jaymi says it’s full of snacks). Hilary looks at the card and sees it as a stepping stone moment. Look out to the horizon (big picture) and yet take care of details. Melissa says we can’t do this alone. There’s teamwork between this figure (Kevin) and the ships in the water. Jaymi says it’s time to put the plan into motion and ensure you have enough energy to carry it through.  Homework: Make your friendship bracelets. Grab a fanny pack and fill it with your favorite snacks to enjoy by the campfire. We slingers are hungry. Is anyone else hungry for snacks now?   Deck’s Mentioned Jaymi: Deviant Moon Tarot (mini edition) by Patrick Valenzia, (Link goes to the large, borderless tarot); snacks are chocolate cake donuts or Sea Salt Mochi Rice Bites. Hilary: Mystic Dreamer by Heidi Darras and Barbara Moore; snacks are Yodel’s. Melissa: The Sasuraibito Tarot by Stasia Burrington; snacks Little Debbie’s Unicorn Cakes.   Resources Tarot Coloring Book by Theresa Reed Psychic Tarot by Nancy Antenucci (the NUCC!) 01/24/2025 106 min 31 sec

SPOILER ALERT ONE: Please, DO NOT LISTEN to this episode if you have not watched the entire Season 1 of AGATHA ALL ALONG. We spoil everything: tarot, witchcraft, and the MCU. SPOILER ALERT TWO: This is a feature-length podcast. Jaymi and our producer, Kendra, decided to publish the full one-hour and 45-ish-minute episode for your pleasure. Episode 116: A Year Ahead With the Twos

12/30/2024 20 min 50 sec

We made it to the end of 2024! As a nice wrap-up to our deep dive into the Twos that finished last year (teehee) and to honor the year ahead, we’re getting readings with the Twos. The magic of the twos is about finding balance within yourself during every stage of life. Melissa showcases how to read with the Aces, the Twos, the Fool, the Magician, and the High Priestess, proving that you can do readings with a small pack of 11 cards. She also gives Jaymi and Hilary suggestions for spells to honor the reading. Melissa, as usual, reads us to filth using very few cards. Homework: Shuffle your deck and draw cards until you reach the Fool. The card before The Fool is where you came from, and the card behind The Fool may tell you where you’re going or what needs to happen next! See you all next year!   Past Episodes: Episode 7: The High Priestess is not your filing cabinet Decks Mentioned: The Light Seer’s Tarot by Chris-Anne Do you like what you hear? Welcome back to the “every card in the deck” series. We’re back with the Two of Pentacles. Another stage card, this time, it’s all about physical balance. In the realm of the pentacles, this is all about work, home life, and finances. It’s difficult to be two people simultaneously; we’ll never be a whole person. Be kind to others because we never know what invisible things everyone is going through. We also get into a bit of the work around reading at events.   Melissa:  Light Seer’s Tarot by Chris-Anne Jaymi:  The Westwood Tarot by Yasmeen Westwood and Kalliope Hilary:   Honorable Mention: Witch Sister Tarot by Julia Jeffery Meraki by Kerri Snook (aka BouchetteDesigns)   Media Mentioned Sample of Jaymi spinning fire poi for STAARCon 2021   Do you like what you hear? Welcome back to the “every card in the deck” series. We’re back with the Two of Swords, which happens to be a stage card. You need to feel comfortable and safe first, and then you can worry about others. Boundaries also affect our client relationships. Episode102: Not Even Once, Ace of Wands

06/14/2024 1116 min 0 sec

Aces are the first step of each minor suit. In this case, we relate the wands to the element of fire and a season. It can be the idealized focus for Wands. It’s the ember of the fire seen in the suit. It’s a spark of the idea or connection. They help focus the potential energy into focus. Episode 101: Intro to the Minors

05/24/2024 1579 min 0 sec

Welcome back to the cards. Hilary, Lis, and Jaymi kick off the minors. We see the minors as the day-to-day nitty-gritty items of our lives. These cards are broken down into two aspects: the numbered cards and the court cards. There are four suits to the 56 cards. Each one has its association with an element that relates to one of the four elements: air (swords), fire (wands), cups (water), and earth (pentacles/discs/coins). We’re going to reveal the numbers as a whole. So you’ll get four episodes detailing the aces, the twos, etc., and then we’ll give a wrap-up. We’ll begin with the Ace of Wands starting next month! Homework: Separate your deck into majors and minors. Look at the minor arcana and see what comes up. Then, do a reading with the minors and a majors-only reading to see how each reading deals with the same topic.   Resources Mentioned 36 Secrets by T. Episode 90 An Introduction to Tapping with Hilary

11/24/2023 3476 min 0 sec

A year or two ago, Hilary started a certification process for tapping. This is a process known as the emotional freedom technique (EFT). It’s similar to the rapid eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) that Lis has been doing. It’s good to work with issues and to clear stresses in our lives. Now, doesn’t that sound a bit like our favorite tool, tarot? It may not solve the problems; however, it can help you change how you feel about it. So, we’re here with Hilary to learn about her process and how she connects it back to her tarot practice. We even have Hilary take us through a short process of making a consistent card of the day practice. If you have questions, contact Hilary at her website. Learn more about this on her site’s tapping page. She also has many tapping videos on her YouTube page. Homework: Try a tapping session, whether it’s the consistent card of the day or another one. Episode 87: Everyone is a Little Bit Psychic

10/13/2023 2678 min 0 sec

Happy October, everyone. Kicking off the divination month, we dive into the psychic arts, thanks to our listener question from way back when. We discuss the differences between how you can tell if it’s real or not, how to hone it in with practice, and what to do with the information after you get it. Our listener from the UK says,  TL, DR: For those of us who are not born gifted in this regard, what can we do to strengthen our intuition and learn to understand what it shows us? I am a beginner reader who enjoys studying tarot in my spare time. I've bought books by Rachel Pollack, Melissa's book, and Barbara Moore's Tarot Spreads book, and I take time to practice on willing friends. One thing I know we probably can’t learn from a book is how to nourish and develop our intuition. I appreciate that some of us on this planet are born with a stronger gift than others, such as clairvoyance or psychic ability, and it amazes me to hear how you all get clear visions and exact information from your readings. In your opinion, can anything like this be learned, and if so, how do we strengthen and nourish our intuition so we can level up our tarot practice both for ourselves as a healing practice and in reading for others? (I sometimes think I can picture something, a kind of vision or snapshot, that I could communicate to somebody, but then I don't know if it's me inflicting my own ideas on them or if it's my intuition popping up and handing me helpful information.) Episode 86: The Cardslingers Weigh-in on Renaming Cards

09/22/2023 1694 min 0 sec

Jaymi’s noticed something interesting happening in the tarot world. There are a lot of decks out there that are renaming cards. For example, some decks rename The Hanged Man to the Hanged One. Suits get renamed; the same with court cards. So, she put it on the kitchen table for Lis and Hilary to give some information.  It comes down to the intent behind using the tarot, who you are reading for, and how you live. Give permission for gender not to be as important in tarot. Renaming makes their power our own. Take it and own it. Homework: What are your thoughts on renaming cards? Do you like it? Is it helpful or not? Episode85: Uncover Your Meanings

09/08/2023 1233 min 0 sec

Tarot is a language. Like any other language, speaking and understanding the components takes time. Today’s listener question asks,  Are there any cards you straight-up disagree with the description listed in the “little white book”? How did you discover the meaning it has for you? We recommend that you take in the info when you are new and then branch out and question the experts. Read the cards how you want because you are the master at reading tarot in your style. Episode 81: Getting Touchy Feely

07/14/2023 1569 min 0 sec

The Cardslingers tackle a sensitive topic of deck boundaries. How do we cleanse our decks? Who do we allow to touch our tools? We get a bit deep about boundaries, cleaning, and possession around our divination tools. Is there  There was a small side topic that was touched on in Episode 32, which made me want to ask a question. Feelings about other people touching your decks. This got me thinking about a situation I found myself in, and I’m looking for advice and opinions.  How do you all reset/cleanse your decks? What is the preferred method of the Card Slingers trio? For example, let’s say someone has touched your deck or, worse - had the balls to use it for reading without consent, and you’re trying to rekindle a relationship with that deck after the fact. Is there ever truly a lost cause outside of a deck too damaged to use?  I have put the deck back in order, smudged it, and put selenite on it. It’s sat on the shelf since then, unused. I can’t shake the disrespected feeling, and I’m hoping you all may have another option I can try before I throw in the towel and give up on this specific one.  Tarot decks we mention in this episode: Jaymi will add this later after she gets a chance to re-listen. Episode 80: Let’s Talk About Stuff

06/23/2023 1456 min 0 sec

Melissa and Jaymi work on their new musical (don’t worry, it’s not coming out anytime soon). They answer a good listener question from Laura T.: When I read cards, I like to have two rocks..a silver obsidian and a quartz wand. One anchors me, and the other I just like to hold. Are there any objects you like to have in your space when you read?  Place items around you that make you feel grounded. Keep stuff to keep away the bad vibes. Keep what you need to make your reading space feel comfortable. Anything that makes you feel calmer and happy does help readings. We recommend that you visit local gem fairs to get good deals. Episode 78: It’s About Time

05/26/2023 1536 min 0 sec

Understanding and developing timing in tarot is one of the true moments when you can play with your cards. There are so many different systems out there for divining “when” questions. Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi discuss various methods they know of and use. We also recommend ways that you can develop your own systems based on your personal locations and situations. Homework: Practice timing readings. Work on your own system, start big, and then delve deeper into specifics. And ask for feedback to know. Episode 77: We’re All Family with Nancy Hendrickson

05/12/2023 3342 min 0 sec

The cardslingers invite mentor Nancy Hendrickson onto the cast. She helps us dive deep into her world of writing, family history, and her art of healing with blends of tarot. Nancy says, “The more you know about family, the more you know about yourself. People want their stories told.” So, it’s time to get personal with Nancy and learn more about connecting with the ancestors. Nancy’s books, Ancestral Tarot and Ancestral Grimoire give readers a powerful method to connect to ancestors of all types. Not only do we have a birth family, but we also have a magical family. These books are meant to be worked with and used rather than swiftly read. Her final wish for the community is to be clear about what we want and take our practices to the next level by finding our niche in tarot and to take the courage and authenticity to do our own. We’re so grateful to have Nancy in our community and a mentor to us all. Go buy her books, Ancestral Tarot and Ancestral Grimoire. Episode 76: When Tarot Comes for You

04/28/2023 2583 min 0 sec

Hilary and Jaymi talk about reading tarot for your self and Mary K Greer’s Tarot for Yourself. Strangely the two do relate, and cross over, and we feel it’s time to chat about the connections and our observations. We discuss what happens when the cards call you out and go a lot deeper than you expected for reading material. And we share stories of when tarot came for us when reading for others. Homework: Record readings from others and get permission to write that down. See if there’s a message for you in them. Learn to discern how this happens. Episode 75: Too Many Dang Card Meanings

04/14/2023 1411 min 0 sec

Reading and understanding cards can be hard for beginners. The companion book or little white book (LWB) can be viewed as a boat or a harbor that anchors you instead of being set adrift on a sea of tarot meanings/interpretations. However, as you grow and learn, you’ll find that cards have a wide variety of meanings. So, in today’s episode, we answer two listener questions about how you figure out what cards mean to you when the LWBs have different meanings.  Homework: Keep a meanings journal. Compile various meanings for each card from all the sources you have available to you. Do it online or printed and see where things intersect and differ. Personal meanings are as valid as what “experts” write. Decks Mentioned:  Scorpio Sea Tarot by Maggie Stiefvater and Melissa Cynova  Handl Tarot  (and the companion books, Major Arcana, and Minor Arcana, by Rachel Pollack)  Mary-El Tarot by Marie White Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans Herbal Tarot by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin The Savvy Soul Tarot by Julie Waidelich Do you like what you hear? Episode 74: Filling in the Blanks

03/24/2023 1473 min 0 sec

Usually, tarot uses the information from the cards that readers lay on the table. But what about what doesn’t show up? Can it tell us anything? Hilary and Jaymi talk about how one can read between the lines and show what’s missing from what doesn’t appear in a spread. Jaymi views cards in a spread as the main focus. When cards or suits don’t appear, they’re unimportant; things are a-ok. The real answer is what’s being shown. However, Hilary sees things differently.  Listen in to hear her framework. Homework: Do a few readings exploring missing cards or seeing what’s not on the table. See how this expands your readings for both yourself and others. We Recommend: Tarot for One by Courtney Weber – which contains info from Hilary on this. Also a great resource for anyone wanting to read for themselves. Episode 73: WTF, Why Is My Deck Mad?

03/10/2023 2056 min 0 sec

Welcome back, Lis! We missed you. And what is this? A haunted deck. Oooh. Thanks. Hilary hates it, and Jaymi wants to get her hands on it. So, dear listeners, we’re discussing personalities we assign to our decks, whether they are truly haunted or angry. We give you ways to deal with these personalities. Decks mentioned: Untold Tales, a home-made deck by Ingred Blackstock (Jaymi was not able to find a link, sadly) Deviant Moon Tarot by Patrick Valenza (link takes you to purchase the Borderless edition) Mary-El Tarot by Marie White Haindl Tarot by Hermann Haindl (has wonderful companion books by Rachel Pollack) For more on this topic: Read Sophia’s (Hilary’s mentee) third newsletter, which discusses using “used” decks. Our friend and mentor Beth Owl’s Daughter has some cool wisdom from her newsletter dated 31/MAY/2022.  What I mean is that the Tarot starts out as a system that you can read up on, learn, practice, and use. And that’s great. And that’s where most people stick. Cool. Except I have noticed that, given half a chance, it doesn’t take long before the cards start to really GET you. Do you like what you hear? Episode 72: Sooo Many Spreads

02/24/2023 1758 min 0 sec

Hilary and Jaymi revisit some listener questions focused around spreads. This episode revisits and expands information from episode 53. Which is “what spreads do you guys use, and how to determine which to use for each client?” We recommend you have a small stockpile for various topics. We also like to create our own spreads from scratch and often use a spread creation deck. Hilary has a formula for reading spreads which is “card interpretation + positional meaning + interaction of cards = interpretation within a spread.” Homework: think about spreads you use, and dig deep into thinking why you have them and use them. Good Books and Decks for Spread Creation: Tierney Sadler’s Deck of 1000 Spreads Kimbery Tsan’s Spread Crafter’s Oracle Go buy Hilary’s book, How to Read Tarot. Also, go buy Tarot Elements by Melissa Cynova to get a whole spread program to help fix your shit. Hilary and Jaymi take time to chat with one of their beloved mentors, Theresa Reed. Join in as Theresa shares many great nuggets of wisdom, including this one:  “We must never take our elders, teachers, and mentors for granted.  They deserve the ultimate respect for passing down their experience and wisdom. To be in the presence of greatness and knowledge is a gift, one that can be taken away in the blink of an eye. So today, thank the teachers, mentors, and wise elders in your life. Episode 69: The Sexual Key to the Tarot

Content Warning: While we’re under an explicit tag for cussing, we get sexually explicit in this episode. So, please don’t listen to this around kiddos; we also want to be aware of those who have sexual traumas or issues around sex. We’re not making fun of anyone’s sexual kinks or labels. Our crew spans all types of sexuality. Jaymi digs deep into her tarot library, and comes up with an amazing gem for this special 69th episode. She reads from the “sacred text” of The Sexual Key to the Tarot by Theodor Laurence (Signet 1971). And the Cardslingers crew responds and retorts. What a way to end the year. We welcome in “newbie” reader Bo Jofferon, who reminds us what it is like to be a reader in their first five years. Each tarot journey is different. Episode 66: Scammer Be Gone

10/28/2022 1874 min 0 sec

The alternate title of this episode is “Grand Rising, Beloveds!” Be careful of how you get a witch’s attention. Scammers online, and off, are everywhere and we’re fed up with it. Even tarot decks are being “counterfeited” and scammed. Listen to our stories about scammers; being copied; or having to deal with unhappy people who think we’re frauds. Amanda sums this up by saying, “It's easy for scammers to infiltrate a profession that people don't want to recognize as "legitimate". If it was easier for tarot readers (who are published authors, who have large followings, who have online courses) to get a goddamn verification checkmark, it'd sure help…” Read up on how one person was scammed out of a fortune in Portland, Oregon. https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2010/05/portland_man_accuses_hawthorne.html Read Hilary’s fantastic post on how to recognize a scammer reading as it’s happening: http://tarotbyhilary.com/i-got-scammed-by-a-reader-how-it-happened-to-me-and-how-you-can-prevent-it/ There are different ways to deal with imposter/scammer accounts on Instagram or TikTok. Episode 64 Love, Light, and Toxic Happiness

09/23/2022 1594 min 0 sec

Let’s talk about the dark side of the tarot community. Readers are people, not products or things. Yes, we appreciate each other's ideas and opines. However, there is a way to come at us and befriend us, and help us through our own journey. Think about how you use your privileges towards others and remember that a person is at the other end of the communication channel. Also, there is no light without the dark, and our screw-ups are what lead us to our brilliance. Do you like what you're hearing? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Episode 63: WTC Series: Craftsman Formula

09/09/2022 1597 min 0 sec

Welcome to the last formula for our “What to Charge” series, where we show you our consummate competence. That’s right; we’re talking professional-level charging. We’re using craftsman instead of master because, at this level, you do so much more than just read and offer advice. You craft magic with the cards between your hands. At this level, you can continue to read, but you also reach out through other avenues like teaching and writing. Many professionals turn away from the event reading and general public spaces and want 100% control of their future. Learn to cultivate the leader within and acknowledge the amazingness you are. Learn to leave a tarot legacy. Homework: Watch StrongBad “Trogdor” for the in-jokes. Keep on learning and developing your skills in both tarot and business.  Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 62 WTC Series: Journeyman Formula

08/26/2022 1294 min 0 sec

We push the What to Charge series one level further with the Journeyman level of charging for your reading, being a Journeyman. What does this mean? Well, at this level, you’re 3 years or more off book and should be charging between $50-$100 depending on where you live. This level is about experimentation with your readings or learning what works, including dropping prices. It’s also about looking deeper at the cards or finding your niche in this niche market. At this point, you have confidence as a reader and now look at what you do as a real business dealing with all the areas a real business takes. Homework: Think about your brand/career and who you are as a reader. People we mentioned Pamela Chen https://www.magicalpam.com Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 61 WTC Series: Apprentice Formula

08/12/2022 1777 min 0 sec

We’re back with another episode of the What to Charge series. Today we dip one step above a Student level to Apprentice (aka “knight”). You took your skills and knowledge as a Student and have started putting it into practice. This is where you do it all events, online, friends, and family; and to make the mistakes that help you develop your business acumen. Charge for situation versus time.  As we keep saying, be transparent about whether or not you need the book for readings. Being honest is what sets us apart from the scammers (more on this in a future episode #66). Have integrity. Don’t be something you aren’t. At this level, we recommend $40 - $50 (depending on your location and “off-book”ness). At this time, we suggest you test whether or not you want to do psychic fairs by going and doing fairs while charging $25. This is the time to read everything our mentor and friend, Theresa Reed, posted about reading and business building. She’s got a lot of good stuff to share. Next time we’ll kick it up a notch and share our thoughts on being a tarot Journeyman. Until then, have fun, get comfortable charging, and make great mistakes. We love and see you and support your journey. PREORDER HILARY’S TAROT BOOK ON AMAZON! Arrives this fall. We also love and adore Jamie Sawyer’s decks and work for the Intermediate practitioners. Episode 60: WTC: Student Formula

07/22/2022 2426 min 0 sec

Welcome to the wild world of reading for others. Our student formula helps you dip your toe into getting used to charing for readings. Students are those who have studied the cards for a bit and may still rely on books for deeper meaning. At this level, you’ll be charging $25-$30 and hopefully you aren’t using your books. At this stage you’re learning you’re authentic reading self. Set expectations for the readings and be realistic. Be transparent in all you do, and let people know what is acceptable. Align your expectations and don’t compare yourself to others. PREORDER HILARY’S TAROT BOOK ON AMAZON! Arrives this fall. Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 59: Introduction to What to Charge

07/08/2022 1885 min 0 sec

Welcome to the long-awaited series on what to charge for your gifts and readings. We kick off this series by letting you know how this will go, some of our stories from the trenches, and other things to consider before you jump straight into making tarot a business. Thanks to our listener who came in and asked, “Being off book for 3 years, what can I start charging others for reading?” Our formula takes the following into consideration: Where are you located? How long have you been reading? How much do you WANT to make? We’re happy to you’re with us. Homework: Figure out what readings you want to offer? Episode 57: A Bunch of Queerdos

06/10/2022 3371 min 0 sec

Representation matters. Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi talk about their queerness and how we can see beyond the gender to get to the core of their energy. Jaymi’s mission is to remove the binary from the cards and give readers and sitters the power to create their own language for gender inside the cards. Hilary wants the bi-erasure to stop and to know that when we share our queerness with others it is with honor and privilege. And Melissa sees you. Really. Episode 55: Temperance Says, Being is an Art

05/13/2022 1330 min 0 sec

This week we delve into the alchemy of the Temperance card. Hilary nails the meaning, by saying “focus on balancing yourself rather than your entire life.” Heck. Even Crowley’s Thoth Tarot gives Temperance the name of Art. And it’s so true because balance is a verb, not a noun. We stand with Ukraine; we’re thinking of you and we send our love and balance out to you. Find joy in the small moments. Episode 54: Under the Influence

04/22/2022 1981 min 0 sec

The cardslingers dive deep by discussing reading/divining under the influence of prescription drugs, and how stress affects readings. We touch on trauma responses and therapy techniques that can help us. We also tackle the myth of near-death and gaining psychic powers; we all have our own powers and they are unique to each one of us. Thank you to the listener who reached out to us to ask us this question and to hear our stories. We love you. We see you. Don’t let medicine and science scare you from getting the help you get or from reading cards for yourself or others.  Check out Episode #29 for more information on reading while sick, or drunk.  Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 53: To Spread or Not To Spread

04/08/2022 1335 min 0 sec

Our episode this week is inspired by listener Lindsey O. who said, “Hi there. I am brand new to Tarot and I am confused about spreads…. I feel like you can go to Pinterest and find millions of spreads. But I also feel like sometimes they get in the way of the actual message of the cards. I can’t keep track of what each position of the spread is, and then the meanings of the cards, and reversals…. It’s just so much. So my question is: what are the spreads you guys use, and how do you determine which to use for each client?” Melissa uses the same spread in her profession because it works. She fills in the gaps between the cards with her intuition. Hilary uses them in her readings when the clients need them. She doesn’t see 3-card readings as a “spread”. Jaymi does keep a folder with a canned set of spreads she uses for her clients. None of these are more than five cards. Occasionally, she’ll try something out for herself to learn more about them when she needs to write them for other spreads. We totally recommend you sign up for both Beth Owl's Daughter and Joanna Powell Colbert’s newsletters. Also, sign up for Hilary and Melissa’s newsletters, too. Well, Lindsey hopefully we’ve given you some good information on spreads, collecting them, and how to use them. May their sacred space containers serve your needs. And you don’t need to memorize any of the spreads in your collection. Do you like what you're hearing? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Episode 52: Death, Touches Us All

03/25/2022 1726 min 0 sec

The Poe Tarot’s Death card says, “The boundaries which divide life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” Death. It touches us all. It’s hard, it’s painful, and we aren’t well versed in dealing with it. While we all agree that death is transformation, we spend time focused on the deeper implications of loss and grief and how it changes us all. Especially with the past two years and all we’ve dealt with. Death does sport the number being 13, so keep in mind that it’s a small comfort to know that we’re about halfway there. It reminds us that there is something coming next in the sequence of majors. Bottom line: Keep your dreams and goals high. Don’t fear death and roll with the punches. Episode 51: The Good, The Bad, and Those A$$hole Cards

03/11/2022 1911 min 0 sec

We address some fun listener questions in today’s episode. Anna F. asks, “What is your favorite minor arcana suit and why? Which do you least relate to?” while someone on Melissa’s Facebook said, "How do you know which cards are the asshole cards?" Strap in and enjoy our thoughts. Jaymi: My favorite is Wands and the least relatable are Cups. Hilary: Favorite is Cups and the least relatable are Swords (due to the time she spends in her head). Melissa: My favorite is Swords and the least relatable are Pentacles.  We think all the cards, no matter what their standing meanings, can be assholes. It all depends on the question asked and the bias of those sitting in the reading. It’s important to have these questions and discussions and to understand the tools we have at our disposal. Homework: Do what we did and rank your minors from favorite to least favorite. Doing this exercise every now and then can show you insights to where your life may be. Keep a record of your asshole cards and what situations they show up. Upcoming News: Melissa wants to let you all know about her new podcast, “Hey, Cynova” where she and Bo pull cards for questions you all send in. Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 50: The Cardslingers Weigh in on Significators

02/25/2022 1858 min 0 sec

Tarot is a language of symbols and we are found in every card. In this second episode Hilary, Jaymi, and Melissa share their thoughts and stories about significators. Fear of screwing things up and being wrong is what keeps beginners from playing with ideas and owning them as their own methods. Try it and use it if you like it.  Hilary didn’t use them when starting out. She doesn’t use them now. However, she can and does use cards chosen with intent as the client and reading needs. She will pick a card based on personality traits rather than the image. Jaymi didn’t start out with it because it’s too much to memorize and remember. She does intentional draws with cards for herself and with clients for homework purposes. But as far as what significators were meant in the past, no she doesn’t use an older system. Melissa thinks significators are stupid. She learned from Eden Gray, and back then, genderized cards were more important back then. Because of that, she would pull the cards. As she grew in her style and reading practice she grew away from the practice. We also think significators and how they were used in the past brings up how we can pick apart the tarot so white issues. The world is more diverse than what the cards wanted to display on the cards.  Thanks again to Chuck K. and Karin S. for giving us something to dive deeper into. Episode 49: What are Significators?

02/11/2022 1289 min 0 sec

Historically, significators were pulled to represent the person being read. Usually chosen by their appearance. More modern definitions allow the full deck and can represent the client in reading, or a situation that is drawn randomly or handpicked. In Lenormand, they are used to represent clients and partners and many modern decks include a bigger diversity of images for people. Thanks to Chuck K. and Karin S. for taking us down the significator hole. There are so many other ways to use them in your readings. You can keep them out for magical intent. You can even use ALL the cards out of the deck to physically focus a reading. We want to remind everyone that while we say gender is a social construct, it STILL is hella important to one’s identity and it does matter. Homework: Research significators and think about how you’d use them for yourself or for clients. Episode 48: Unclench Your Fist and Just Be, The Hanged One

01/28/2022 1970 min 0 sec

This week Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi dive back into the series on the Major Arcana with a discussion of The Hanged One (aka The Hanged Man). Yes, we’re renaming it because gender is a social construct–many other decks do this too!  So, if The World card–the beginning and end of cycles–is a portal; then the Hanged One is the middle pause. They bring self-sacrifice for the greater good. They bring enlightenment and get new perspectives on the situation at hand. It’s time to sit back, relax, and just be in the moment. No matter what. Episode 44:Post-reading Aftercare for Readers

11/12/2021 2182 min 0 sec

Event season is now upon us and knowing how to care for yourself after you do readings is extremely important. Hilary, Onareo, and Jaymi talk about what they do after their readings (both for events or in general). Grounding and disconnecting is the name of the game when it comes to post-reading aftercare. Time to let go of the readings, forget them, and enter back into your own world. Take a simple bath or shower. Turn it into a ritual by adding Epsom salts (magical properties) or baking soda (good for detox). If it’s too late in the evening, then at least wash your hands and face. Wear or keep stones nearby: black tourmaline, selenite wands (good to clear your decks and body). Tiger’s iron helps Jaymi while Onareo uses tiger’s eye. Hilary keeps her mala beads on while reading and she takes off when she’s done. Putting a pinch of salt under your tongue keeps you grounded in-between readings. Scented sprays: Hilary uses color energy aura spray, Jaymi uses 7 Brooms, and a palo santo spray. Onareo uses bergamot (a citrus that helps in getting your power back) on his hands or in his bath. Florida Water is another good cleansing spray. Sleep: Reading is hard work on your body. Let your body get as much rest as it needs to reset itself. Eat something: It doesn’t need to be the fast-food junk that Jaymi gets but eating something after reading does help to break the energy you have. Onareo’s Post-Reading Aftercare Ritual Take the four aces from the minors and shuffle them as you ask, “what should my after-reading ritual be?” Then pick one of the aces and think of all the ways that the elemental energy and do one. Some examples might include Swords (air) = do something mental; read, use feathers. Cups (water) = drink water, have a bath, use sprays. Wands (fire) = burn incense, cleanse with smoke, rub a taper candle over your body and then light it to release that energy. Pentacles (earth) = do something physical; walk, play with crystals, do mudras or yoga. Episode 43: Event Season Cometh

10/22/2021 2032 min 0 sec

Editor’s note: this episode was recorded on Jaymi's birthday in August. Some shenanigans took place… The holidays are coming up! This means lots of people want to hire readers for their parties. Listen in as we help you go from horror story event pain to living your best event plans. Be aware and understand your needs as you learn the ropes of reading at parties. We’re going deep into some event self-care tips. Do these things during event season: Raise your event prices from Halloween through New Year’s Day. Don’t be near a sound speaker (at all). Where you sit DOES matter. Manage your health. Know who you can get for your backup support. Get a headcount to read for everyone (or offer certificates to those who didn’t get a reading). Clearly express your needs to the client. Take breaks, get help from bartenders, or other helpers. Have an event-aftercare routine. Bring an event go-bag! Things to include (besides decks) are table dressings/crystals, battery-operated candles, tissues, face wipes, hand sanitizer, energy clearing spray, tissues, throat lozenges, water, business cards (and holder), timers (sand or meditation), payment readers. You can still sign up for the Kitchen Table Gathering happening November 6-7, 2021. It’s virtual and you’ll be able to learn from Onareo, Potter, V from Redlight Readings, and our very own Melissa. He’s also one of the instructors for this year’s Kitchen Table Gathering. As an added bonus, this week’s episode is brought to you by one of our 13 listeners. Lucky number 13 asked, “Which cards for you are the cards you never want to see in a reading for yourself and especially, if different, what cards do you find difficult to read for a client. Episode 41: Give Us Your Gentle Honesty

09/24/2021 2057 min 0 sec

Fire signs adore honesty; sometimes "brutal honesty." However, sometimes the brutal truth doesn't deliver the message appropriately. So, Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi answer a listener's question, "How do you handle readings where the cards show an outcome that will disappoint?" This week, we share our stories on delivering messages while remaining kind. This is a different delivery than “sugar coating.” Tarot can be a reflection, and our job is to help clients navigate the situations they present to us. Bonus Episode: The Happy Empath?

09/17/2021 1540 min 0 sec

Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi have been feeling the weight of the pandemic. One of the skills they’ve found helpful for both themselves and those they love is to use the notion of holding space. This means that you be present with your whole mind, body, spirit and listen to yourself or the person you are with without judgment. You listen wholeheartedly with empathy and compassion. It’s an important skill for readers, those on the spiritual path, and anyone wanting healthier relationships. Holding space for self requires a lot of deep breathing, letting go of self-judgments, and cultivating compassion for yourself. As Hilary said, “insert stuff here” Holding space for others is giving them time and attention to talk about what is going on. Don’t solve their issues, don’t judge, don’t make it about you. Let them talk or emote and bear witness to their journey. Jaymi found this article on how to hold space useful: https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/holding-space Hilary recommends you read Seth Godin’s The Practice https://bookshop.org/books/the-practice-shipping-creative-work/9780593328972 Melissa also recommends you read The Happy Empath by Christine Rose Elle. Episode 40: Make Your Choice with Justice

09/10/2021 1585 min 0 sec

This week Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi discuss what Justice means to each of them. Justice is a call to action, to help raise and elevate the marginalized voices. The figure on the card isn’t just sitting, they lean forward, a foot peeking out from the robe, ready for action. In fact, you can look at the cards surrounding Justice in your readings to determine the action you should take or when to apply it. Episode 39: How Do We Do This

08/27/2021 1601 min 0 sec

Here it is, the long-awaited HDWDT (howdowedoeeeeet) episode. We collected all your questions and picked the most relevant one. While we read for the winner, this may also apply to you as well. Without further ado, let’s introduce the question and show you a taste of how we read.   Hi Cardslingers, My name is G and I'm a big fan of your podcast! I've been reading mostly for myself for about 10 years now, but I've never had a professional read for me. Regardless of the question you choose, I'm interested in seeing your different approaches to a reading.   Like most people the pandemic has really worn me down, but I was managing well enough until November. After that, stress from the election, holidays working retail (in a pandemic), and being short-staffed at work had me mentally and physically exhausted. Then to top things off, my grandmother entered hospice and passed away just a few days ago. I feel like I can't quite get my footing. My question is what do I need to do to work towards finding some peace or balance?   Thank you for the opportunity! The Cards and decks we used: Melissa: Scorpio Seas Tarot (3 cards) 5 Cups rx, Knight Cups Rx, The Moon Hilary: Radiant Rider Waite Smith Tarot (4 cards, one jumper, all reversed) 6 Cups rx, 7 Swords rx, Queen Swords rx, 10 Cups rx Jaymi: This Might Hurt Tarot (3 cards) Ace Cups, King of Wands, 9 Cups   Look at the little things, especially those that bring you joy. Episode 38: Cultivating Tarot Discernment

08/13/2021 903 min 0 sec

Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi discuss the idea of discernment when we choose trusted resources, whether they’re books or teachers. Beware of gatekeeping. Beware of placing others on a pedestal. Lean heavily on the stories and interpretations in the cards, not the keywords or books. We think that it’s important that readers cultivate tarot discernment by questioning the wisdom of those in the past. Don’t just read books and leave your skills there, synthesize the information into your life, and keep learning from others and from the decks. Grow your knowledge and look for diversity in your decks. Become the eternal student with your tarot practice. Do you like what you're hearing? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Episode 35: First Time Jitters

06/25/2021 1625 min 0 sec

Getting nervous before reading for others is a thing that does happen. Today’s episode discusses the jitters, nerves, and anxieties that can happen when you read for others or get readings. It happens to the best of us, even professionals. Remember to have compassion for yourself, don’t let the brain weasels (negative self-talk) get in the way. Setting expectations helps calm the nerves down. Using an in-take form is one helpful tool to navigate the nerves.  We also love and recommend Psychic Tarot by Nancy Antinucci (aka nucc) as a good resource for cultivating sacred amnesia.  Do you like what you're hearing? Episode 33: CSI Tarot, Stalker and Jumper Cards

05/28/2021 1129 min 0 sec

Sometimes tarot does funky things. Today we’re going to talk about two of those strange phenomena that happen a lot. Get ready for an episode of CSI, Tarot edition where we discuss stalker and jumper cards. Stalker cards happen when the same card gets pulled over and over again. It can be drawn in succession, or others can pull it while they’re reading for you. What are they? Why do they follow us around? How can we get them to go away? Identify what situation is going on for you. Examine the card and its meaning, and then do the work it is asking you to do. Once you figure it all out and do the work, it’ll go away. Jumper cards happen when you shuffle a deck. This card (or cards) pops out from the deck and can be examined in several ways. Melissa goes all CSI: Tarot on it, Jaymi views the jumper as an extra message saved for later, and Hilary reads it immediately because it is important. Do you like what you're hearing? Melissa thanks you all for the outpouring of support with her Go Fund Me account over the past weeks. Hilary and Jaymi also thank you for listening in. We think you’re all great! Today we’re taking on a bunch of tarot myths and rumors which have been passed around for YEARS. Many of the rumors and so-called “rules” are gatekeeping techniques that bar the curious and new seekers. Here’s a rundown of the rumors and rules we have. You cannot buy your first deck Tarot is a closed, or Romany, practice Wrap it in black silk Sleep with it under your pillow If you damage your deck you’re cursed If you lose, or damage, a card, you can’t use the deck Tarot is precious and you must treat it as a divine object Don’t let others touch your deck (consent is sexy!) You have to read reversals/Can’t read for yourself The fate revealed in the tarot is unavoidable Beware of these rumors and “rules” and the readers who use them to take away your personal will.  Yes, Melissa is STILL pissed about the loss of her first Shadowscapes Tarot deck. They wanted us to know how we use tarot and astrology together. For the most part Hilary and Jaymi experiment and play with astrology while reading the cards.  There is so much out there and you can find a lot more people and books than we have time to cover. Episode 30: Tarot By the Numbers

04/09/2021 2721 min 0 sec

This episode was recorded in December 2020 when Melissa had a birthday. Strap in everyone, we get nerdy this week. Listener Chuck K reminded us to talk about the birth card stuff that Hilary and Jaymi use in their readings. So, we did, and Melissa got to be the primary test case. She was kicking and huffing as we gladly analyzed her from this tarot by the numbers perspective.  How do you calculate birth cards? Well, it’s easier than you think. Add the numbers together. Keep adding until the number is between 1 and 22 (this is your Personality Number). You may then add the digits of that sum to find your Soul Number. [birth month, birth day, birth year] ____ + ____ + ____ + ____ = ____ [birth number] “Since we are looking for twenty-two possible results for a Personality Card, then a method of adding dates that maximizes these results will serve us best. That is why [Mary K. Greer] recommends[s] the addition method.” —Who Are You in the Tarot?, p. 36 If you get a single-digit or a sum greater than 22: Since there are only 22 cards in the Major Arcana, reduce the number to 22 or less (to result in a single-digit). In cases like these, it results in the same Personality and Soul Card (in Melissa’s case, she is a Single 9 Hermit; in Hilary’s case, she is a Single 4 Emperor; and Jaymi reduces her 21 World card to a 3 Empress). If you get 19, you have three cards: The Sun/The Magician/The Wheel of Fortune (MLK is a 19, for example) If you get 22, Emperor/Fool: combine great impulsiveness and mastery/22 is a master number in Numerology The constellations of the tarot run through the Magician to the Hermit card. For example, if you get a 16, you’re not the Tower alone! You’re in the constellation of the Chariot (Mastery through Change 16/7) because 16 reduces by addition to 7 (1+6=7).  Homework: Test out the Birth Card systems and see what they have to say for you. Episode 28: The Hermit, A Box We Can’t Check

03/12/2021 1765 min 0 sec

This one’s for you Stewart Kaplan. Thank you for shining your light on tarot and the Rider Waite Smith deck on our community and coming off the mountain to do so. We are all in your debt. The Hermit is not the single, lone wizard everyone makes him out to be. He is a trailblazer, the visionary, and always comes back to share their thoughts to the masses. He is the one who knows themselves so well that they can handle the challenges life throws at them. “As close to the sacred as we can get, but not really.” There is a hint of self-care, and self-love, and knowledge and awareness with this card. How can you work and deal with others if you cannot be comfortable with yourself first?  Homework: Understand your love language. Find the light that pulls you forward and keep working with it. Melissa wants you to read Tom Robbins Tibetan Peach Pie.   Do you like what you're hearing? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Episode 27: Strength, the Annoying Gym Teacher

02/26/2021 1188 min 0 sec

It’s been a while since we’ve shared our thoughts on a card. So, in this episode, we’re chatting about Strength. We’re not asking you to buck-up and keep on moving. Instead, we see this card asking you to lean into the title where you find trust, faith, and hope. There is the capacity to help others and heal ourselves in this card. It’s a personal choice on what Strength means to each of us. We also share our favorite cards from several decks. Note: Sometimes, a tarot deck switches Strength and Justice in their majors' story. So if you are using a deck with Strength as number 11, the information here still applies. Homework: Figure out what strength looks like to you. Where does it show up in your life? Episode 26: Length Matters, How Long Should a Reading Take?

02/12/2021 1686 min 0 sec

We reached into the listener handbag and pulled this question from Jones Davy on Twitter. They asked us, “Does how long you spend on a reading depend on your mood, the question, or something else?” So happy to oblige.  Listen in and see how each cardslinger handles the container for their professional, event, and personal readings. Know your limitations for various situations and understand how you work with others. Thank you so much for asking this. Homework: Figure out how long it takes you to do a reading. Episode 25: Into the Mystic (Part 2)

01/22/2021 1634 min 0 sec

In part two of the mystical exploration, we go back to early divination when games and old-time knowledge were commonplace tools. Folklore, magic, and divination go hand in hand and can teach us so many skills. We cover grade school games of cootie-catchers and M.A.S.H, spirit boards, pendulums, and runes. This episode shows you that nothing is sacred and everything can become a divination tool if you have the desire for it. Hilary recommends you go to Pandora Witch for spirit boards: https://pandorawitch.shop/collections/fiendies-ouija-boards Jaymi found a free cootie-catcher download, so you make your own: https://www.quia.com/files/quia/users/rainstormrainbow/cootiecatcher.jpg Melissa wants you to know if you have depression, you can find help! Call 1-800-273-8255 and talk to a friendly voice. Homework: Test drive a playful divination tool, and let us know what you’ve done! Leave a comment on our site or in our inbox. Episode 24: Come Sit At Our Tarot Table

01/08/2021 984 min 0 sec

Welcome to 2021, everyone! One of our seven listeners asked us:  “Is there room in the "cardslingers posse" for someone who loves the cards but doesn't want to read professionally (or for other people, period)? I love everything about cards - tarot or oracle - but have no desire to read as a business. However, I'd like to meet and mingle with others who take the cards as seriously as I do. Would I be welcome as a non-reader in the online community or at conferences if I don't have the same end-goal as professional readers?” Yes, listeners, we welcome you to our posse. Everyone is free to gather at the tarot table. No matter what your interest level in cartomancy is. We round out this episode by discussing our reasons for gathering, stories about what goes on in conferences, and give tips for convention survival. Do you like what you're hearing? 11/27/2020 987 min 0 sec

Sometimes readings aren’t all shiny and happy. Sometimes, the reading gets deep and unexpected. In these hard readings, tarot readers have an even more important job than tossing cards onto a table. We hold space, really listen to our clients and give them time to speak, and bear witness to their journey. Do you like what you're hearing? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com.
