He was breathing from a tube in his neck, receiving nutrition from a tube in his belly, and his left hand was completely flexed inward.About a year after his injury, he was introduced to a nutritional protocol that helped him begin to regain some clarity.  That’s when he dove into an intense study of why nutrition made such a difference. For over 6 years, he has devoted his life to studying metabolism, neurometabolism, mechanisms of neuroplasticity, neuroscience, and nutrition, while reaching out to doctors, researchers, practitioners, and neuroscientists, to learn everything he can to optimize his brain function and to maximize his recovery.Cavin started an award-winning blog and a podcast “Adventures in Brain Injury”, where he interviews doctors, practitioners, researchers, and others involved in neurorehabilitation and brain function. He is soon to release a book called How to Feed a Brain, which is the culmination of the nutritional tools he has learned through this journey. Cavin wrote this book to share with others the nutritional information that has helped him to regain his brain function. While his recovery has been an astounding example for brain injury survivors, this book is not just for those with neurological conditions –it is for anyone wanting to improve their brains.   More information on Cavin can be found on: http://feedabrain.com/ and register for his FREE Webinar series featuring me as one of his experts here: https://feedabrain.com/interviewseries/

04/25/2017 33 min 6 sec

Do you have any concerns about neurological health/cognitive function including: ADHD, Parkinson’s, MS, Mood imbalances etc? Wondering why and how they happen and what you can do about it? Be sure to tune in for an in depth look at a functional medicine approach to these and more! Currently, stimulant drugs (psychostimulants) are the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD followed by antidepressants. Stimulants appear to boost and balance levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters; however, these drugs do not provide the building blocks to replenish neurotransmitters and can cause deficiency especially in a young developing brain. These medications help improve the symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity; however, they have high risk for dependency and misuse is on the rise. Parkinson's disease occurs when nerve cells, or neurons, in an area of the brain that controls movement become impaired and/or die. Normally, these neurons produce an important brain chemical known as dopamine, but when the neurons die or become impaired, they produce less dopamine. This shortage of dopamine causes the movement problems of people with Parkinsons. Along with neurotransmitter imbalances, other common drivers of neurological dysfunction include: inflammation, micronutrient deficiencies, toxicity, bacterial imbalance and even blood sugar balance! The gut and digestion is often a place to start when treating these pathologies. To learn more how what lab tests, supplements, and foods to consider, be sure to tune in! In this Episode Ali will walk you through common causes of leaky gut for prevention as well as an RRR gut restoration protocol to treat it! Leaky gut or intestinal permeability  is when large protein molecules escape into the bloodstream. Studies show that these attacks play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases.  The main culprits as to why this “leaking” occurs  are foods, infections, and toxins. Gluten is the number one cause of leaky gut! Do you suffer from: bloat, IBS/diarrhea/constipation, fatigue, rashes, or brain fog? Curious if you have candida yeast overgrowth or overgrowth of bad bacteria? In this episode Ali explains the symptoms, causes, and most importantly the solutions to address Candida Albicans or an overgrowth of yeast. In this episode Ali demystifies one of the most common causes of digestive disorders and mysterious symptoms: Candida Albicans. “Candida” is an opportunistic fungus, which is a form of yeast in the body that is naturally occurring. Everyone has some level of yeast in their system, but it is the overgrowth of Candida Albicans that can wreak havoc and lead to dysfunction. When this powerful yeast takes over, Candida releases toxic byproducts into the bloodstream, many of which can act as neurotoxins leading to headaches and brain fog.  The human body holds 3-5 pounds of living bacteria that has the opportunity to work with our body or against it. When in a state of symbiosis the gut bacteria can aid with absorption of nutrients, production of serotonin and other natural antidepressants, regulation of immune function and cancer fighting compounds, and improvement of digestive function. When in the state of dysbiosis, bad bacteria can take over, leading to a host of symptoms! Naturally Nourished EPISODE 13: Adrenal Fatigue

When the HPA Axis is over-activated, it can lead to destructive imbalance. This axis regulates your body’s health from body temperature to satiety, fluid retention, metabolism, and beyond! It regulates three glands: the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce steroid hormones including the infamous stress hormone, cortisol. In this episode, Ali will elucidate the connection between adrenal fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome, increased food sensitivities, digestive disturbances, depression, anxiety, autoimmune disease, hormonal imbalance, and stubborn weight loss. Often when searching for a solution with an ongoing health condition, people will pick at layers of the symptom rather than understanding that managing this axis can resolve an array of chronic conditions.
