Margy Feldhuhn is a podcast host and the co-owner and CEO of Interview Connections, the first and leading podcast booking agency. She and her business partner lead an in-house staff of over 25 full-time employees in their (now virtual) Rhode Island office, and have successfully scaled the agency to multiple 7 figures. Since 2013, Interview Connections has been booking successful entrepreneurs as guests on podcasts and providing them strategy and coaching to monetize their guest appearances. They currently represent over 250 business owners. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Margy is also an animal rescue advocate and personal development enthusiast. With her podcast, “We Get It, Your Dad Died,” Margy uses her own experience of losing her dad to suicide to transform the conversation around grief and show the joy that is possible on the other side of loss. Her show won First Prize in the Best Podcast category of the 2021 Rhode Island International Film Festival. In this episode, we chat about how their clients utilize podcast guest appearances for their businesses and podcasts, how Interview Connections was created, how many shows they have to pitch to get four podcast guests appearances per month for their clients, why they typically target “mid-range” shows for their clients rather than shows with massive audiences, the criteria they look for when finding podcasts to pitch, why don’t ask podcasts hosts for their download numbers before deciding whether or not to pitch to them, and more. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Margy and her co-owner will be hosting a free podcast guesting masterclass December 13-17th. Click here to register with my special affiliate link. 98: That Time I Sold My Podcast
Whenever people find out I sold my first podcast, they always have the same questions. What?! How?! I didn't even know that was possible. Could I sell mine? How many downloads were you getting? How much did you sell it for? After it happened again recently with an upcoming guest, I figured it was time to put the information in a nice, neat little podcast episode so I don't have to keep explaining it. ;) Now, to be perfectly clear ... this is NOT an episode about how to sell a podcast. It's just the story of how I unexpectedly found myself selling mine back in 2018. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. 97: Why Not Editing Your Podcast is a Terrible Idea
"I don't edit my podcast because I want it to sound natural." Every time I see or hear a statement like the one above, I can't help but roll my eyes. And, no, it's not just because I'm a podcast editor who thinks people don't appreciate what they do. I mean, that's true ... but that's not really the point here. ;) As someone who's been in the podcasting industry for over five years, I can promise you that not editing your podcast is doing FAR more harm than good. Take a listen to this quick solo episode to find out why that's the case and what you should be doing instead if you really want your podcast to succeed. 94: Clubhouse for Podcasters
I’m officially back from hiatus and we’re kicking things off with Clubhouse! If you’ve spent any time in any entrepreneurial or podcasting communities in the past month, I’m just going to assume you’ve heard or seen the word “Clubhouse” 18,001 times already. (Just in case you haven’t, it’s an audio-only app that lets people host chats or discussions about pretty much anything and it’s taken off like crazy.) In this quick episode, I share why you might have to wait to join the Clubhouse craze, whether I think it’s a beneficial new tool podcasters should be utilizing or just another shiny object to distract us, and an amazing free resource to help you get your bearings on the app and make the most out of it. When you first start the process of creating a launch a new podcast of your own, it can be learning a foreign language. In this episode, I'm going some of the more common beginner podcasting terms. This isn't a comprehensive list by any means (although I explain in the episode where find one that is fairly comprehensive), but this will help you get started without feeling overwhelmed by technical jargon you don't need to know quite yet. 90: Debunking Five Podcast Myths
Over the past four and a half years, I’ve heard every excuse in the book for not starting a podcast. But, there are a few I’ve heard several times over and, unfortunately, they’re exactly valid reasons for not starting a podcast because they’re just not true. So, in this episode, I’m debunking the five following podcast myths: There are already too many podcasts/my niche is too crowded. I’m going to start a podcast and see immediate success. All I have to do is build it and they’ll come, right? I’m not a celebrity. There’s no way I’ll be able to stand out and get a large enough audience to make it worth it. It’s really expensive to start a podcast with all the fancy equipment I’ll need to make my show sound professional. I’m not tech-savvy and starting a podcast is way too complicated. 89: Instagram Strategies for Podcasting with Andréa Jones
Of all the social media platforms, I use Instagram to promote this podcast more than any other. So, I especially excited to record this episode with Andréa Jones and she did not disappoint. Andréa is fiercely committed to helping businesses and podcasters build profitable online communities through simple social media solutions. She's the host of the Savvy Social Podcast and the creator of the Savvy Social School; a digital platform designed to teach its 100+ members (predominantly small business owners) how to implement organic social media strategies. She has also been named one of Social Report's top marketers to follow. As you’ll hear in the episode, Andréa and I have known of each other for a while and have met in a few very quick passings at various podcasting conferences, but this was our first chance to have a real conversation and I was thrilled to find out she’s every bit as lovely and skilled as she appears online. In this episode, Andréa shares what types of content are performing well on Instagram at the moment, the main thing she sees people on Instagram get wrong that is hurting their engagement and the growth of their show, the one quick and easy action she recommends you take as soon as you finish this episode that will help you in the long-term to grow your podcast audience (and maybe even your client base), her thoughts sending an automatic DM after someone follows you, why you should be encouraging your audience to save your posts, and more! 88: LinkedIn Strategies for Podcasting with Chris Hines
LinkedIn is a platform I know almost nothing about and that’s exactly why I have a guest on the show today! Chris Hines is host of the Personal Branding Playbook and a podcast expert for businesses and personal brands. Since 2015 he’s been hosting, producing and managing podcasts. Now, Chris owns the Elite Podcast Marketing Agency. Chris and I actually met at Podfest in March 2020 and were able to spend some time chatting over dinner after spoke speaking at the event. I was so impressed with Chris’ approaching to marketing and promoting a podcast (which is obviously not my strong suit) and knew I had to have him on the show at some point. When he recently about how LinkedIn is an underutilized and powerful platform for podcasters, it seemed like a perfect fit. In this episode, we talk about why podcasters should not be ignoring LinkedIn, his Three C’s Method for generating leads from LinkedIn, what you should and shouldn’t do in your LinkedIn profile, how often you should be posting on LinkedIn, what type of content you should be posting, how to build connections on LinkedIn, how to your podcast content to convert those connections into paying clients, and more! 86: How I Determine What Content to Give Away for Free on This Podcast
In the past week, I've had two different people specifically ask me about how they decide how much of their content to give away for free on their podcast. I'm not a business coach so I can't tell you what the ideal amount is, but I can tell you how I make that decision for this podcast and how it's worked out for me over the two years I've had this podcast. Special Note: I mention in this episode that my upcoming podcast launch group program will be launched in July. With everything going on, I've pushed the launch back until September. I am, however, taking on a few last 1:1 clients before my rates increase after the group program has launched. Click here if you would like to see about grabbing one of the spots. 85: How to Talk About Antiracism as a Podcaster and Entrepreneur with Dr. Lucretia Berry - Part 2
Dr. Lucretia Berry is the founder of Brownicity; an agency dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and antiracism. She is a former college professor whose love for humanity led her to author What LIES Between Us: Fostering First Steps Towards Racial Healing, a journey guide designed specifically for ‘beginners.’ She is the Anti-race/ism Curriculum Specialist for Community School of Davidson (NC), a contributor for (In)courage.me, a TEDx speaker, and more. I first heard Dr. Berry as a guest on a show I was editing for one of my clients and, as someone at the beginning of their own antiracism journey, I connected with her message right away and knew I needed to have her on this podcast to help me talk topic of race and antiracism through the lens of a podcaster and entrepreneur. In part one of my conversation with Dr. Berry, she shared the difference between the terms “Black” and “African American”, why it’s important to capitalize “Black”, the difference between a debate, a discussion, and a dialogue, which one of those we should be having as people who communicate in such public ways, and more! If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can find it here! In part two of our conversation, why not acknowledging major events like a global pandemic or civil unrest does more harm for your business than good, how to transition back into your business and podcast after taking a break during to emotional and challenging situations, why you shouldn’t immediately run out and ask a POC to be a guest on your podcast in an effort to make it more diverse, and what you should do instead to make sure the diversity in your podcast guest list and your business is authentic. 82: Stop Asking for Ratings & Reviews (And Do This Instead)
Listen to just about any podcast episode and there's a very good chance you'll hear a request for the listener to leave a rating and review. That request is frequently followed by an explanation that it will help the show be discovered by more people. Simply put ... that's not even remotely true and you're basically wasting your breath. 80: Tips for Building a Bond With Your Podcast Audience
One of the reasons podcasting is such a powerful lead generation tool for a coaching or consulting business is because of the bond it allows you to build with your audience. Unfortunately, I've noticed that a lot podcasters aren't taking full advantage of this power and they actually end up doing things that can alienate their audience members instead. So, in this episode, I'm providing you with some incredibly quick and easy-to-implement tips for building a bond with your audience that will help you convert them from listeners to paying clients. SPECIAL NOTE: You'll hear me mention a free training, The 24HR Secret Sellout, that my business coach is running at the end of the episode that was originally supposed to start on May 11th. 77: How to Tag Your Audio Files with ID3 Metadata (and Why You Absolutely Should)
If you don't know what metadata is, you don't want to skip this episode. There are a lot of podcast editors and consultants who don't see the value of metadata, but I do. Is it going to be the difference between your podcast being a huge success and not? No. Is it a process that only takes a literal minute or two and potentially helps boost your website's SEO and helps some of your listeners out? Yes. Take a listen to this quick episode to find out why I, unlike a lot of professionals in my space, think you should tag your podcast episode audio files with metadata and exactly how you can do that in the easiest and quickest way possible. 76: Ask Me Anything - Part 2
To celebrate my birthday last year, I decided to do an Ask Me Anything (AMA)-style episode of the podcast where you were able to ask me any question you wanted and I answered it in the episode. It was such a hit that I decided to do it again this year! In this AMA episode, I answer the following questions from listeners just like you: Do I believe in have teasers at the beginning of the episode? Do I believe in having a professional edit a show down? What is the best approach to making money with a podcast? Should you place your podcast under an LLC? If you upload your episodes to YouTube, do they own the rights? Why do I prefer Cleanfeed over Zencastr? What is my other podcast that I occasionally reference? What would I do differently if I could start my podcast and my business again? What non-podcasting tools do I use for my business? Do I edit this show or do I have an editor of my own? 73: Podcasting During This Chaotic Time
Why am I suddenly seeing a big drop in my downloads? Am I doing something wrong? Should I just take a break from my podcast until things go back to normal? My podcast is extremely relevant to everything happening right now. Should I release even more content? I usually record my podcast episodes when my kids are at school and/or my partner is at work. How am I supposed to keep up with my show now that their school or workplace is closed, and they’re home all day? Should I talk about the pandemic on my show or should I just go on like nothing is happening? Look, this is a crazy time. The world is on edge and people are (should be) isolated in their homes. So, what does this all mean for podcasting and your show specifically? You’ve got questions about podcasting in the time of the pandemic, and this episode will provide you with at least some of those answers. Last weekend I traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah where I was on a panel about Women in Podcasting at the Outlier Podcast Festival. The Outlier festival happens a few times a year in various cities around the country and this was my second time attending. It’s an intimate event with a laid-back vibe that makes it really fun to learn new podcasting insights and tips. It those insights that I talk about in this episode. So, tune in to hear the cool new app that lets you take notes (and organize them) while you’re listening to podcast episodes, why you need to do an audit of your podcast at least once every year, the easy hack for getting a long-winded guest to stop talking, why engagement is as important as the content itself, and the awesome new offering I’m launching TODAY that is practically free! 66: Prepping Your Podcast for a New Year
"If you want your podcast and your business to work hand-in-hand, you have to start thinking about them as the same thing and not separate things." As you wrap up one year and plan your goals for the next one, don't forget about your podcast. I see far too many podcasters who aren't intentional with the content they're putting our and the products or services they're promoting on their show. In this episode, I'm explaining exactly how you can prep your podcast for new year so that you always know exactly what you're promoting and what your content should be centered around. Note: This will be my final episode of 2019. I'll be returning with a new episode on January 9th, 2020. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. 64: How to Avoid Issues When Submitting Your Podcast to Apple
"The number one thing that prevents people from getting approved by Apple, is your main podcast artwork." It's the first week of December and this means we're about a month away from the major new podcast boom that comes every January. This also means there are a lot of new podcasters getting ready to submit their shows to the various listening platforms. Unfortunately, this can be a frustrating experience for those new podcasters who get rejected by Apple because they don't understand the guidelines their show is supposed to meet. That's why, in this episode, I'm breaking down the common issues podcasters experience when submitting their show to Apple. SPECIAL NOTE: For some inexplicable reason, I neglected to mention an important artwork guideline in the episode. In addition to the guidelines mentioned in the episode, your main podcast image must be 72 DPI. If you work with a graphic designer, this is information they'll need to know. 61: Tips for Repurposing Old Podcast Episodes
“Reuse this content over and over again. It’s there for you. It’s at your disposal.” One of the biggest mistakes I see podcasters make is that they release an episode, promote it everywhere for the following week, and they forget all about once the next episode is released. It's a cycle of constantly releasing content and then ignoring it. In this episode, I provide some ideas for how you can make the most of this backlog of fantastic content and ensure that it's not just forgotten. 57: How to Deal with Podcast Tech Overwhelm
"The key thing that will see you through to the end, is that you just take one step at a time." Some of my most frequently asked questions, and my clients’ highest points of frustration, have to do with various forms of podcast technology. Whether it’s learning out to use the equipment or editing programs, setting up an RSS feed, figuring out which program to use for recording interviews, how to get your show listed on the various podcast platforms, how to get a player in the shows … there’s a lot of things that come along with starting a podcast that can be very confusing and overwhelming. 55: What the Latest Data Tells Us About Podcast Listeners
"Don’t just assume that everyone who follows you knows what a podcast is." Every Spring Edison Research releases an annual report called The Infinite Dial and it contains data on a variety of media/content platforms; including podcasting. In this episode, I'm highlighting some of the most relevant/interesting data in their 2019 report. Some of the topics include how many people are listening to podcasts on a weekly basis, how much of each episode they listen to on average, what devices they're listening on, how they typically find new podcasts, how likely they are to consider a brand that advertises on a podcast, and the main objections for why people who're familiar with podcasts don't listen to them. This is a very numbers driven episode and I realize that might not be your cup of tea, but it should be. 54: Pushing Past Impostor Syndrome in Podcasting with Amanda Kingsmith
Amanda Kingsmith is a RYT-200 yoga teacher and yoga business consultant based out of western Canada, although she spends much of her time traveling the world with her partner, Ryan. Amanda came to yoga from a marketing & business background, and has a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in marketing from the University of Calgary. Amanda combined her love of business with her love of yoga by starting M.B.Om, a podcast and online business focusing on the business side of yoga. She works with yoga teachers to help them create careers they love that are both sustainable long-term and financially abundant! She is also the co-host of a popular travel podcast and blog called The World Wanderers, and works as an advisor for a growing apprenticeship program called Praxis. In this episode, Amanda discusses how her podcast was borne out of her struggles finding paying jobs as a budding yoga teacher, why she experienced fear around starting her podcast even though she was already an experienced podcaster at the time, how the podcast led to the creation of her business, why she’s okay with knowing her podcast isn’t for everyone, the main things that contribute to her audience growth in a very niche market, the lessons she learned from her first podcast that she carried into the launch of M.B.Om, and more! 53: Should Your Podcast Have Seasons?
"It's almost a guarantee that you'll lose subscribers in your off season." Podcasting can be a lot of work. Maybe the idea of producing an episode every single week all year long is overwhelming to you. I totally get it! Summer's coming ... the kids are out of school, the weather's finally warmer, there are trips to be taken, and fun to be had. Again, I get it! (Well, maybe not the kid part, but the travel and having fun part at least.) Maybe your signature course or group coaching program is only open once or twice a year and you need to focus all your efforts on that and don't have time for a podcast during those weeks or months. Yeah, I get that too. Formatting your podcast to be released in seasons instead of having an ongoing weekly show, can be a huge blessing in these situations. BUT, it doesn't come without a price. In this episode, I explain the benefits and drawbacks to having seasons for your podcast and provide some tips for helping to minimize the loss of subscribers between seasons. I also provide an update on my call with one of the founders of SquadCast, ask for your help supporting the She Podcasts' Live Event (basically a podcasting conference specifically for women that's running a kickstart campaign until April 17th), and OFFER A HUGE GIFT for anyone who's been considering working with me or purchasing my course. The gift expires when my birthday does so, don't hesitate to take a listen! To learn more about the resources mentioned, visit the show notes. Want to connect with me further?
