Stephanie Laing (Comedian)

08/28/2024 60 min 22 sec

Stephanie started performing in April 2007 on the Scottish comedy circuit. She quickly established herself as one of the most promising acts of her generation on the circuit, and in 2015 appeared as a finalist in the prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian Of The Year competition. Stephanie is best described as goofy and peculiar, and her comedy is partway between the needy oddness of Maria Bamford and the upbeat affability of Josie Long. Her material is a mix of silliness, filth and unusual observations, underpinned by a disarming honesty which makes her seem charmingly vulnerable. Now a regular on the circuit Stephanie has also become a stalwart of comedy festivals across the country having appeared at Brighton Fringe, Leicester Comedy Festival, York Comedy Festival, Bath Comedy Festival, Women in Comedy Festival as well as appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe every year since 2010. Not content with just performing in the UK Stephanie has also appeared at UCB in New York & The Laugh Factory in L.A. Most recently in 2018 Stephanie took her solo show ‘Mad About The Boy’ to the Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth comedy festivals. Mike Wilmot (Comedian)

06/26/2024 61 min 28 sec

Mike was born with his head between a woman’s legs, took that fact, added beer, and created one of the funniest stand-up acts on both sides of the Atlantic. If you live on the eastern side of the pond and are a fan of Rich Hall’s, you probably saw Mike appear with him on the BBC in Rich Hall’s Cattle Drive, or Rich Hall’s Fishing Show, or flagship stand-up show Live at the Apollo. Or you might have seen him as himself on the BBC in Never Mind the Buzzcocks or 28 Acts in 28 Minutes. On the other side of the Atlantic, Mike was on Canadian TV in Corner Gas, and All the Comforts, and on CMT’s Ron White’s Salute to the Troops. The above just scratches the surface of this funny man’s comedic depth. You might ask, ‘What do you mean by that?’ And I would answer: ‘He’s got awards. He’s got awards up the whazoo: the Barry Award for Outstanding Stand-up Comic Performance in Australia; the Time Out Award for Best Stand-Up in London, England; the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Film Performance, and he twice received the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Stand-up.’ Mike has made numerous film and television appearances over the years, with a showstopping role in It’s All Gone Pete Tong and a cast regular on The Fountain and Flickers. Add to this all his other Canadian TV appearances – the thousands of times he did his stand-up on nightclub stages, and all the festivals from Melbourne, Australia to Kilkenny, Ireland to Edinburgh, Scotland to Montreal, Canada – and you have one hell of a funny man. In 2016 Mike made his debut appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall as part of the Teenager Cancer Trust gigs, and had a weeklong sold out run at London’s Soho Theatre. Jay Handley (Comedian)

09/29/2021 91 min 6 sec

Jay Handley used to make beautiful sculpted oak furniture before fucking it all off to become a comedian instead. A decision that has been financially catastrophic. That said he does get to perform all over the country at some of its very best venues. These include The Glee Club, Jongleurs, The Stand, The Comedy Store & Baby Blue. Clearly, what he has lost financially he has gained artistically. He has also twice been a finalist/bridesmaid in the Birmingham New Act of the Year Awards as well as appearing in the semi-finals of the LOADED Laftas and the Final of the Levity Festival Act of the Year. Alas, he has won nothing... nothing at all.  But what he has lost in potential accolades he has gained in a zen-like acceptance of his place in the world.  He is a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed 4 solo shows. "Free Comic" &  "Free Comic Vol 2", the cretinously titled "You Want the Truth? You Can't Handley the Truth" and his favourite... "Hansplaining". He will be returning in 2018 with his new favourite show "White Jesus" Over the years some people have formed opinions of Jay Handley. Some even worthy of being published on blog-based review sites!  'There are moments here that can go toe to toe with some of the funniest stand up skits I've seen' - EdFringeReview.com 'A top class comic with a great mix of material...his gags are imaginative, polished and proper proper funny' - 4GoodComedians 'Absolutely brilliant!' - Artificial Light 'A highly funny act' - Comedy Sheep

Al Lubel (Comedian)

10/28/2020 3530 min 0 sec

Al Lubel became a lawyer to satisfy his mother and quit to become a comedian to satisfy his sadistic need to torture her. After graduating law school in Florida, Al moved to California, passed the bar exam on his first try and immediately began the practice of standup comedy. Al practiced law during the day and comedy at night. Getting stage time is hard for a beginning comic, so Al would sometimes suddenly stand up in the middle of Denny's, and unannounced, do five minutes. And Al always did well because he had everyone's rapt attention because people were scared he might hurt them! Al gradually improved at comedy, getting work on the road and leaving the law behind. Within a year he won the $100,000 Comedy Grand Prize on Star Search. Doing the Tonight Show was a big childhood fantasy, so Al auditioned and became one of the last comics to appear with Johnny Carson. Al went on to do six more Tonight Show appearances with Jay Leno and made five appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman. Al has also played an attorney on the Blake Clark HBO Comedy Hour and has been featured in the Showtime and PBS special, A Standup Life. He has appeared on all seven episodes of the ESPN series, Bill Walton's Long Strange Trip. Al's solo show, Al Alone, won the Amused Moose Award Judges Prize as the best one person show in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He also was nominated for best performer for a solo show by the Barry Awards at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. But Al does admit to missing the practice of law. As he says, "I'd like to have just one more trial, something serious like a murder trial, because right before I give my closing argument and my client's entire fate hinges on each and every word I say, I want to see his face when I turn to him and whisper, I'm a comedian!" "Al Lubel is a terrifically funny comedian." - David Letterman www.allubel.com

Steve Gribbin (Comedian)

02/26/2020 72 min 15 sec

Steve Gribbin Steve Gribbin is a diminutive guitar-wielding satirist from Liverpool whose scabrous comedy songs and off the wall observations have made him one of the firm favourites of the comedy circuit. Steve’s original comedy songs combine razor sharp lyrics with tunes that put their foot in the door of your mind and refuse to leave. Firmly based in rock ‘n’ roll and refusing to pull no punches, these are not the ‘oh so witty’ ditties of penguin-suited plink plonk piano playing posh gobs. They are that rarity – comedy songs which are actually funny. For nine years Steve was the smaller one in the dynamic comedy duo Skint Video, stalwart’s of the Edinburgh Festival, appearing on countless television programmes such as Saturday Live, radio such as The Mary Whitehouse Experience, and their own show in 1992/3 Songlines (BBC Radio 1). Skint Video went their different ways in 1993, since then Steve has been storming across the UK and Ireland as a solo artiste.

Paul Pirie (Comedian & Actor)

01/29/2020 67 min 37 sec

Paul Pirie A brilliant natural comedian, Paul Pirie comes packed full of energy and uses every ounce to maximum effect, with superb delivery. "a most impressive physical comedian…" – Chortle With a set that jumps from bitchy to silly, you’re never more than a line away from a great pun, insight or well crafted punch line, delivered with a ferocity that makes Paul’s humble beginnings on the Scottish circuit seem such a long time ago. "A hilarious rubber faced clown" – The Scotsman Paul’s career has encompassed TV, Film and Radio alongside his skills as a stand-up, and he is now one of the biggest Scottish acts on the UK comedy circuit. He’s a confident and intelligent comedian who makes it his mission to work and entertain his audience. Paul’s material is superbly individual and put simply, and always delivers a refreshing burst of laugh out loud comedy that leaves audiences in raptures. "Fizzing with energy and spewing out one-liners like he had just scoffed a dodgy prawn, Pirie is a man we will be seeing more of " – Daily Record Paul’s physical, theatrical presence on stage and his sharp, rapid-fire comedy onslaught is packed with highly entertaining material, which blurs the lines between real-life anecdotes and flight of fancy. Its been observed that he channels the late Robin Williams at his most excitable; Pirie’s act is absolutely hilarious. "His clowning and quick fire gags will win him fans.. his physical mannerisms have a touch of Eric Morecambe" – The Daily Record Pauls hilarity and comedic ability has earned him huge popularity with comedy goers and bookers across the world, gigging from Australia to shows for the Armed Forces. He is a regular performer at the UK’s best comedy clubs and was simply born to entertain. "Supercilious Paul Pirie.... was the stand-out star of the night; a Frankie Boyle you could actually book. He shares the tabloid whipping boy's uncompromising Scottish bluntness, but while the put-downs he describes are hilariously brutal, they steer clear of outright unpleasantness. Silly little jokes soften the blow, and he's got some impressive, offbeat one-liners to keep the gag rate high. The intolerant grumpiness is thus combined with impressive efficiency, and the result is a definite hit" – Chortle  "inherently funny" – Edinburgh Guide Awards/Competitions Scottish Comedian of the Year - 2006

Chris Kent (Comedian)

11/27/2019 69 min 1 sec

Hailing from ‘The Rebel County’ (That’s Cork for anyone outside Ireland), Chris gave up the day job as an electrician to pursue his calling in comedy. He emerged onto the Irish comedy scene in 2009 after winning the Bulmers Nuttin’ But Funny competition. In 2010 Chris made his debut at one of Ireland’s biggest comedy festivals in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens. His compelling storytelling then went on to win him the Comedy Smack Down Award at the Galway Comedy Festival later that year. He quickly established himself on the Irish circuit and became sought out to open for some of his favourite acts, including Dylan Moran, David O’ Doherty, PJ Gallagher and Neil Delamare to name but a few. In 2012 Chris was listed as “One To Watch” in The Dubliner Magazine’s Red Hot and Rising and went on to make his debut at the prestigious Cat Laughs festival in Kilkenny. In August, Chris brought his first solo show ‘Plugged In’ (‘Breathes new life into anecdotal comedy’ -The List, ★★★★ Cream of the Fringe) to the Edinburgh Festival, where he fell ill after contracting the mumps. This was initially diagnosed as ‘just Edinburgh’ by fellow comedians. However, the large lump on his face was later confirmed as a genuine illness, and not simply ‘all in his head’. He had to cancel two shows to avoid creating an epidemic, although he’s not sure anybody noticed… Chris returned to Ireland with broken dreams but mump free, to take up his seat on RTE Radio 1’s comedy panel show The Second Republic, alongside PJ Gallagher and Neil Delamare. After a tough debut year, which he put down to “everybody in the world being in London for the Olympics”, Chris was determined to return to Edinburgh fighting. 2013 saw him perform his second solo show ‘Second Fix’ with a full bill of health and much healthier crowd numbers. This time he only had to cancel one show due to a delayed flight, and was delighted that people did notice (albeit being a bit annoyed at him). He returned home that year, after a much happier Edinburgh experience, with a new UK agent. In December, Chris was chosen to support Bill Burr in Vicar Street, on his only Irish date that year. He made his Irish television debut on New Years Eve as a panelist on RTE’s Next Year’s News. In 2014 Chris took part in an Irish documentary The Stand Ups, which followed the lives of five Irish comedians. This gave a behind the scenes glimpse into the everyday life of a comedian, and followed Chris as he prepared for his third Edinburgh solo show ‘Corked’. ‘Fresh and original material, extremely endearing performer’ ★★★★ Broadway Baby. ★★★★ Threeweeks. In 2015 Chris made his UK TV debut on Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central. Shortly afterwards, he moved to the UK to try and establish himself on the UK comedy scene, where he has quickly become a favourite at some of the top clubs. He brought his fourth solo show ‘Stop Stalling’ (‘Original, hilarious material, Among the best acts I’ve seen ★★★★★ The Mirror) to the Edinburgh Festival. He returned home after once again miscalculating his final shop and leaving behind half a bottle of shower gel and a box of cornflakes (unopened), and taking with him only resentment for the landlord that charged seven times the rent for an apartment that couldn’t possibly have been up any more stairs… In 2016 Chris performed at the Perth Fringe. It was warm. He took a break from Edinburgh, assuming that “everybody in the world would be in Rio for the Olympics”. He did however go on to do his first Irish tour with ‘Stop Stalling’, performing to sell out crowds. It was cold. Chris is currently working on his fifth hour, which he will be bringing to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond in 2017. https://chriskentcomedy.com

Sian Doughty has been performing stand up since October 2013. In 2014 she created the character Sally Firth, the mother of a young male stand up comedian who does her version of his act, using his notebook.   Reviews include:  “Beautifully written jokes,” (Maureen Younger, MY Comedy), “Looking wonderfully out of place was (spoiler alert: eventual winner!) Sally Firth. Imagine your friend’s slightly posh mum coming onto stage and being both adorable and hilarious and you'll understand why the audience fell in love with Sally. Sally's timing, expressions and delivery were so natural and her persona so likeable that the crowd were chanting her name at the end of her routine. Fantastic.” (Codie Louise Austin, North West End).  “Sally is a real hoot, switching from naive and unsure to more rude…she has the delivery spot on….has the charm to go solo.” (Views from the Gods)  “Did a fantastic set, drove the audience wild” (Jason Why, promoter), “Very funny” (Matthew Baylis, comic, MC and promoter) “Lit up the stage” (Alastair Sadler, comic, MC and promoter), “Sally is eminently likeable and the juxtaposition between content and delivery is a joy to watch. I've yet to see the character of "Sally" fail to win over audiences and keep them on her side throughout the journey that is her set. In short, smart, clever but most importantly funny."  (Ray Davis, comic, MC and promoter) “The innocent-looking but sexually explicit Sian Doughty” (Johnny Glasgow, MC and comic) “Hilarious” (Ariane Sherine, writer and comedy performer) “A class act, on and off the stage” (Steve McCann, promoter and performer). In 2015 Sian was a semi-finalist in the Golden Jester Competition. In 2016 she beat King Gong at the Comedy Store, Manchester, won Beat The Frog at the Frog and Bucket, Manchester, won “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” in Leicester and won the Comedy Carousel at Birmingham Glee Club. “Sally Firth” has been named as One To Watch by the judges of Funny Women 2016, was shortlisted for Silver Stand Up of the Year 2017 and was a semi-finalist in Welsh Unsigned Act of the Year 2017. Mr Sean Sellers (Comedian & Improviser)

08/26/2017 73 min 4 sec

Stand up comedian, actor, improviser, and director, Sean Sellers shares his name with far more people than he thinks he should, including an infamous Satanist–turned–Christian double–murderer and the progressive Christian Rock band named after him. And now he’s on a podcast trying his best not to reveal anything about himself to you, the listener! Will he? Won’t he? Listen and find out… An intensely guarded yet clearly self-possessed American comedian, who started doing improvisational, physical, and sketch-based comedy in the early 1990s, Sean’s now a full-time London-based stand-up. Whether he’s comparing himself to Jesus or making fun of Mexican drug lords, for Sean, it’s all about attitude. A natural comedian and comic performer, his current material covers everything from pop culture and politics to premature babies in a style that is alternately camp, clever, guarded, and intense, but always very, very funny. “A very distinctive figure: A camp, intense American in an untied cravat and with a thick mop of hair that had such a mind of its own it deserves its own agent. He speaks in short, sharp sentences as he agitatedly expresses his hefty catalogue of peeves. His angsty, agitated style…makes him very watchable.” Steve Bennett, Chortle 2016 Twitter: @mrseansellers www.mrseansellers.com

Simon has been bringing his unique brand of stand-up for over 10 years now to small (and some large) London clubs as well as further afield if the money's right. He has been a regular performer at the Edinburgh Festival, doing his first solo show in 2013. His style is sometimes laid-back while at other times highly energetic and bizarre, he likes to occasionally sing and dance (being the frontman of a failed rock band, it inevitably comes out). Various influences come to mind, from grouchy Rich Hall and sarcastic Jo Brand to meandering Paul Foot with a touch of Daniel Kitson. He likes to chat to the audience which makes him a natural MC and can be found regularly hosting at Duchess Life Comedy Night near his home in West London. "I really enjoyed your set. Daphna Baram (Comedian & Journalist)

08/26/2017 72 min 35 sec

Daphna Baram is a London based Jerusalem born comedian. She worked as a human rights lawyer, a journalist, an editor and an academic. A heart attack at a haringey gym at the tender aged of 39, combined with two weddings and a brief encounter with Chris Morris, all conspired to launch her into middle age and stand up comedy. Daphna performs in London but ventures to gigs across the UK and in Europe. She is currently working on her 5th Edinburgh Fringe solo show. Her comedy is inspired by her passion for politics, her experience of immigration and London life, and her past as a hard nosed journalist and a lawyer representing Palestinians in military courts. “ * * * * * Masterful, Her fantastic way with words and bone dry humour have the audience in fits of laughter... Rick Pistol (Comedian & Poet)

08/26/2017 76 min 1 sec

“Warm”, “gracious” and “compassionate” are just none of the words used to describe grumpy, balding misanthrope Rick Pistol: A comic with all the charm of a pair of soiled Y-fronts strewn in a dark alleyway. Rick has been a stand-up comedian and MC for the past 10years, with all the success of an asthmatic snail attempting a land-speed record. His brand of 'humour' (such as it is), is the kind of squalid, sick filth your parents should have warned you about. If you're listening to this podcast this, they failed. Rick is one (smaller) half of successful comedy night ‘Laughter’s The Best Tonic’ with fellow promoter / comedian Jonathan Prince. On occasion, Rick also runs the ‘Fly In The Ointment’ comedy club and tours with industrial-punk-pirate band ‘Jesus Hooligan’. Despite popular demand, the startlingly immature album 'RICK PISTOL - BARELY STANDING UP' is available to download. It features live performances, puerile songs, offensive poetry, prank phone calls and an absolute lack of good taste. Disappointment guaranteed. Amongst other places, Rick has appeared on BBC Three Counties Radio, 'Newsjack' (BBC Radio 4), and in approximately 2.3seconds of BBC2 documentary 'Speed Dreams - The Fastest Place on Earth’. Mum is so proud. If you really must, you can contact Rick at: (website thingy): http://rickpistolcomedian.wixsite.com... (social networking thingy): www.facebook.com/RickPistol (pointless prattling thingy): tweet @RickPistol

Mike Lord (Comedian & Promoter)

08/26/2017 67 min 34 sec

Comedian, comedy promoter, comedy writer, MC, radio presenter, all round hero (but he doesn’t do electrics) and now podcast guest, Mike (Lord) is a seasoned performer. Pepper or mixed spice being his normal stage covering. Mike started stand up in 2012 having got the stage bug from several years in Pantomimes. His first stand up gig was to 150 people and what started out as an ambition to challenge himself, turned into a passion that clearly still burns when you see him perform. Mike’s humour covers a wide spectrum of topics but usually ends with the joke being on him, as he prefers to be the idiot in the room, despite the stiff competition sometimes. He’s currently writing a daily pun on Twitter/Facebook, to challenge himself again, as puns are not normally part of his set. In 2013 Mike founded JAM Comedy Club, along with two other acts he’d bumped into along the way. Initially these nights were a traditional open mic try-out night, one of which still exists but now the JAM team book and run paid nights for a small number of venues in the Milton Keynes area. You can find at more about Mike and JAM Comedy at the various social media addresses below https://twitter.com/mikelordcomedy https://www.facebook.com/captainmikel...https://twitter.com/jam_comedy https://www.facebook.com/jamcomedy/

Philfy Phil A.K.A. Phil Alexander (Musical Comedian)

08/26/2017 65 min 8 sec

I'm Phil Alexander, singer of silly songs and igniter of lyrical fireworks. I have been entertaining people round camp fires, at parties and musical open mics for more decades than I care to remember. For some totally inexplicable reason, I had the stage name "Philfy Phil" bestowed upon me, and since then have striven to live up to it. It took me quite a long time to realize that people find my stuff really rather funny, and they might actually be right (a lot of people seem to think I'm a good guitarist, too, and I know they're not right about that). So in 2012, I set out on a whole new direction, trying to make a name for myself on the comedy circuit. Since then, I have performed at comedy nights as often as time, resources and an ageing Rover 75 have allowed, and have generally tried to entertain and leave audiences thinking "you know, I really didn't think anyone could make that kind of subject matter funny" bit.ly/philfyphil @ThePhilfyPhil facebook.com/ThePhilfyPhil

Fred Ferenczi (Character Comic)

08/26/2017 72 min 16 sec

Fred Ferenczi began stand-up in 2001 and clocked up some 500 gigs in that time, performing all over the UK, at least twice a week. ‘Glee’ described Fred as “Kaufmanesque, great use of time” and Steve Bennett (Chortle) said “Fred could become quite the cult.” Chesham Comedy Club call Fred is “brilliantly weird”. He has performed at numerous festivals including Edinburgh, Leicester, Brighton, Citadel and Wilderness (the latter two, where he curates a massively popular comedy tent). Fred has been a finalist in the national Silver Comedian competition in 2012, 2013 and 2016 (Steve Bennett’s tip for the title) near miss for the title). Fred works equally well on conventional as alternative bills. Hard to define, here are some more quotes to give a sense (sic) of Fred, but you really need to see him live… “Without doubt the most marvellous and memorable act I have even seen”. (Ian Hall) “I thought you were great. I love the no liners.” - Andrew Bird. “We’ve had some great feedback about your act…people were literally crying with laughter” - Mock Tudor Comedy Club Increasingly in demand for comedy acting roles, and can be heard in later 2016 as “Ash” in radio sitcom “Slaving Away” by/ starring Miranda Kane, and on ‘ViceTV’ in a comedy about a deluded Panda. Fred has a website (fredferenczi.moonfruit.com) where you can see a video taster from Tringe Comedy Festival 2014, and you can follow Fred on FB and Twitter.
