20: Gladiator
This week on The Movie Score, we’re taking a look at one of the most iconic films of the last 20 years: “Gladiator,” starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. We discuss this film’s weighty themes, incredible dialogue, massively epic score…and we briefly debate which is the better film, “Gladiator” or “Braveheart.” As always, don’t forget to submit your answer for “Guess the Movie Line” to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

19: The Prestige
And we're back! After a short but unavoidable hiatus, we're taking a closer look at one of Christopher Nolan's earlier films, "The Prestige," the story of two professional magicians obsessed with outdoing one another. This may be a dark story, but it is certainly well-told--and while we may strongly disagree on our final ratings, we certainly enjoyed our discussions about its themes, characters, and musical score. As always, don't forget to submit your answer to "Guess the Movie Line" to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

This week we're postponing our planned discussion of "Beauty & the Beast" to a later episode and focusing instead on Marvel's latest (and long-awaited) installment, "Black Widow." 17: Captain America: Civil War
We'd planned on comparing the animated and live-action adaptations of "Beauty and the Beast," but Maribeth came down with a stomach bug...so another Barber sister, Carolyn, joined Ben on the podcast this week instead! Join us as we take a closer look at one of Carolyn's all-time favorite movies, "Captain America: Civil War"--and as always, don't forget to submit your "Guess the Movie Line" answer to themoviescore20@gmail.com.

16: Inception
"An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you." This week on The Movie Score, we're taking a closer look at one of our all-time favorite films, Christopher Nolan's mind-bending "Inception." Join us as we discuss its themes, its characters, and the incredible soundtrack composed by the musical genius, Hans Zimmer! 15: Movies We Want to See
This week on "The Movie Score" we did something a little different: rather than reviewing a movie, we shared our own lists of all the movies (and shows) we WANT to watch! Some are upcoming releases, some are currently in theaters, some are in pre-production...and at least one of them was released close to twenty years ago. From "Indiana Jones 5" to "The Young Woman and the Sea," from "Jurassic World: Dominion" to "Black Widow," we just had a lot of fun anticipating our enjoyment of these stories.

14: Up
This week on The Movie Score, we take a closer look at one of Pixar's greatest masterpieces: "Up," the endearing story of the elderly widower Carl, his intrepid kid-companion Russell, and a house kept afloat by thousands of balloons. We discuss the themes of this beloved story, along with the vivid color schemes--and we even introduce a new segment, "Scoring the Score!" As always, don't forget to submit your answer to "Guess the Movie Line" to themoviescore20@gmail.com. 13: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
This week on The Movie Score we remedy a problem we unintentionally discovered in our last episode: Maribeth has never seen the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie! Now that she's finally watched it, we take a deep dive into this iconic, hilarious adventure and examine its historical background within the Disney empire, its vivid characters, and its swashbuckling themes. And as always, don't forget to submit your "Guess the Movie Line" answer to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

12: 1917
This week on The Movie Score we're taking a closer look at one of Ben's new favorite films: 1917, the semi-fictional story of two young soldiers in WWI tasked with a dangerous mission--one that will determine the fate of an entire regiment. As always, don’t forget to submit your answer to “Guess the Movie Line” to themoviescore20@gmail.com! You're in a race against time and your fellow listeners, so send in your guess before it's too late! Show Notes: Daniel Williams' Instagram: https://instagram.com/daniel_the_williams

11: The Blind Side
In this week’s episode of “The Movie Score,” Ben and Maribeth examine “The Blind Side,” the based-in-fact yet somewhat-fictionalized story of football player Michael Oher and his adopted family. This film, while immensely popular when it was released, deals with some hard and culturally relevant subjects—and we are VERY aware of that fact as we review this film with as much care and sensitivity as possible. But we have fun, too…especially when Ben tries to explain football plays to Maribeth. 10: We Review Each Others Movies
In this special episode of "The Movie Score," we do a movie swap: Maribeth reviews a movie from Ben's personal DVD collection, and Ben reviews a movie from Maribeth's. The films? "The Scorch Trials," the heart-stopping, often-terrifying second installment of the "Maze Runner" series, and "Paterson," the quiet story of an equally quiet poet. We hope you enjoy this special episode; we had a lot of fun making it, despite some hilarious technical difficulties. And as always, don't forget to submit your "Guess the Movie Line" answer to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

#9 La La Land
This week on The Movie Score, we’re waxing eloquent about one of Ben’s top-three favorite movies, the blockbuster musical “La La Land.” Join us as we discuss the power of color and music, the tension between ambition and relationships, and then launch into a debate about whether Mia and Sebastian could’ve “had it all.” And as always, don’t forget to send your answer to “Guess the Movie Line” to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

8: The Monsterverse
Well, it was bound to happen--but we finally made an episode where we have a movie franchise for lunch! We have a whole lot of fun discussing its confusing messages and predicting which of the Titans will win in their upcoming fight! 6: 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
This week on "The Movie Score," we're reviewing "13 Hours: The Secret Stories of Benghazi." This isn't the most lighthearted film we've reviewed, but it's definitely an important one thanks to its historical context and its powerful themes of war and conscience. Join us as we rate and review this intense but compelling film--and don't forget to send your movie line guess to themoviescore20@gmail.com!

5: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Did we expect an adventure-comedy like "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" to teach us an important lesson about making the most of our time on this earth? Nope. And yet that's exactly what we got! "This is what you should be thinking about: who you are in this moment of time, and who you want to be. You get one life. You decide how you're gonna spend it." Join us this week as we rate and review this hilarious, heartwarming film--and don't forget to send your movie line guess to themoviescore20@gmail.com!
