Ep98: Enthusiastic Yes or Bust Ft. Pat Smith & Lefty Lucy

11/28/2024 59 min 8 sec

Sometimes, personal goals get lost because we say yes to other people's goals without assessing whether or not they align with ours. Though there is something valuable to take from every experience, we have to constantly evaluate whether or not what we are currently doing is nourishing us or depleting us. J.Mix is joined by her talented friends, Pat Smith & Lefty Lucy, to talk shop about how they are prioritizing gigs and artistic experiences that nourish their purpose and goals. They also acknowledge their shared clinical diagnosis and how they nurture it whilst pursuing their endeavors.  Lefty breaks down why she enthusiastically aligns her productions with historically marginalized communities at the forefront. Pat discusses the importance of finding creative spaces that allow artistic exploration and pursue the curiosities of life.  FOLLOW PAT & LEFTY!@PAT.SMITH85 on IG & TIKTOK@LEFTYLUCY on IG & @ILOVELEFTYLUCY on TIKTOKWanna give your thoughts about this episode? Ep97: Behind the Music: The Journey of "Circles 2.0”

10/25/2024 25 min 29 sec

J.Mix is a multi-hyphenate performing artist born & raised in New Orleans, LA. She is a Loyola University Music School graduate with over fifty theatrical credits since 2006. For the vast majority of her career, she's sung the tunes of other composers and songwriters in theatrical and classical spaces. Over the last three years, she has begun releasing original music and has found fulfillment & freedom in sharing herself in this way.On Friday, October 25th, her new(ish) single, "Circles 2.0” will be released on streaming services. It's "new(ish)" because this song is a re-imagining of the previous single “Circles” released with the Songwriter Collab in 2022. In her opinion, this latest iteration feels more like an accurate representation of who she is as an artist and of the sound/musical ideas she hopes to evolve into as her solo artist career grows.Enjoy this episode on her creative journey.Stay In The Mix on Social Media (IG & TikTok):Follow J.Mix @jmixplainsitallFollow The Self-Aware Millennial @theselfawaremillennialWanna give your thoughts about this episode? 04/16/2023 64 min 0 sec

We are welcomed by an extremely special guest who has been mentioned MANY times by J.Mix, but the listeners never got a name... til now. In honor of their 10th anniversary, J.Mix is sitting down with her boyfriend, Theo, to reminisce about their relationship, which just so happens to fall on the interracial spectrum. In this episode, they dive deeper into the racially-charged challenges they've had to overcome. They also address why their long-term relationship has yet to graduate to the legally permanent contract that is expected of partnerships that last longer than 2.5 years. GET YOUR TICKETS TO THE SELF-AWARE MILLENNIAL LIVE SHOWS!MAY 2ND & JUNE 6TH!New Orleans's newest festival is BLACK THEATRE! This week's episode will be brought to you in two parts because the conversation that transpired was nothing short of divine. J.Mix is joined by her fellow revolutionary friend and "mugician" Lex Caron, to discuss the importance of collective healing within community after this wave of election madness is over. Lex discusses their love for music and the unity it brings revolutionary families who take part in marches and rallies for civil rights. They also unpack their strong opinions on the passing of the "Louisiana Love Life" Amendment (#1) and what it means to the marginalized vagina owners and their families who will feel the effects of the state's decisions before the people in power ever will. 09/04/2020 77 min 16 sec

On this week's episode, J.Mix is joined by two sensational NOLA actors, Monica R. Harris, and Martin "Bats" Bradford to discuss the perils of colorism in America, more specifically in New Orleans, where it runs unapologetically rampant in the black community. (SIDE NOTE: Colorism IS, in fact, underlined in red because it is, apparently not considered a real word.) They also discuss "light skin privilege" and why it should be taken with the same severity as the BLM Movement's efforts to address the existence of white privilege. The trio, furthermore, touch on how light-skinded BIPOC individuals can utilize their strengths to elevate the voices of their melanin-rich brothas and sisters. Ep19: "Entanglements" with Attraction Vs. Fetishization

07/13/2020 81 min 8 sec

QUICK PSA: If you're only here to hear the "Entanglements" portion of our conversation, please consider reminding your friends and followers that the cops who murdered Breonna Taylor have YET to be arrested... and then... you have our consent to scroll to 56:00. --In continuation with "Self-Accountability Month" J.Mix sits down remotely with roommates Julie Dietz and Megan Whittle to explore their histories with racial fetishization and how it compares and contrasts to their innate attraction to other races. On the contrary, all three compare their own encounters with folks non-consensually fetishizing their bodies in comparison to the model race that represents that specific fetish. --J.Mix also sheds light on how she, as a black woman, can tell if someone is fetishizing her versus if they are showing genuine attraction. The three ladies also discuss (IG) @alexand_erleon 's excellent post on Sexual Racism and Erika Hart's (IG) @ihartericka  mind-boggling Facebook Status on the dangers of having a "preference" in dating.--Also discussed is their collective thoughts on playing the highly recommended dating game "Monster Match," branded as a dating website that exposes the explicit bias of algorithms. It scales down the plethora amounts of dating apps so that they’re easier to understand. Instead of millions of users, there’s just you, a real human being, and 100 imaginary monster profiles. As you swipe right (to like) and left (to dislike) profiles, they show you how the next profile you’ll see is affected. 07/05/2020 87 min 45 sec

In honor of July aka. "Self-Accountability Month" J.Mix and Beau Autin are confronting their own implicit biases about their personal dating preferences and histories over dating apps and in their interpersonal relationships with others. In this episode, they compare and contrast the race and orientations of the communities they grew up amongst and how it has affected their current dating preferences. They also explore how this has negatively influenced the LGBTQ+ community in terms of acceptance of all spectrums of queerness. --If you are curious about how algorithms function on dating apps, there is a game, Monster Match, branded as a dating website that exposes the explicit bias of algorithms. This week, The Self-Aware Millennial welcomes J.Mix's college mate, Kavin J., to the studio to discuss their harboring grievances about being born and raised in the New Orleans metro area, and growing up in the midst of the city's gentrification. Kavin airs out his concerns with white folk's constant eagerness to be inclusive amongst other cultures without doing the proper research and/or gaining that culture's respect first. Things discussed: "Transplant" generalizations, "woke" white people, white wedding second lines, melting gumbo pot/evolution analogies, Renaming of gentrified neighborhoods, and so so so much more!Follow Kavin J. on Insta @kjaykell For further conversation, follow the Self-Aware Millennial on Instagram:@theselfawaremillennialFor questions or inquiries please email:theselfawaremillennial@gmail.comSong: The Self-Aware Millennial Theme Song by J.MixWanna give your thoughts about this episode?
