Tien jaar geleden besluit fotograaf Karine Zenja Versluis op zoek te gaan naar haar Oekraïense familiegeschiedenis. Ze weet dat haar oma in de de stad Debaltsevo* in de Donbas was opgegroeid, en dat ze via Duitsland naar Nederland was gekomen. Maar waarom, en onder welke omstandigheden? Hoe had haar leven eruit gezien in Oekraïne? Karine staat op het punt naar Debaltsevo te vertrekken. Maar dan breekt de oorlog uit en loopt alles anders dan verwacht.
