16 Year Old Single Mother With Two Children

from THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP · host THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP

A sophomore in high school. Two babies under two years old. No father in the picture. No driver's license. No diploma. And a body that has not finished growing. In this episode, I explore the hidden reality of teenage motherhood in America. The national birth rate for teens has declined by seventy-five percent since 1991, but the numbers are still staggering: nearly 150,000 babies were born to teenage mothers in 2022 . Behind each statistic is a girl who will likely never graduate from college, never earn above the poverty line, and never experience the carefree adolescence her classmates take for granted. The cycle is generational. Daughters of teenage mothers are three times more likely to become teenage mothers themselves . Sons of teenage mothers are twice as likely to end up in prison . The fathers are often absent. The grandparents are often exhausted. The system is often overwhelmed. This episode follows the story of one sixteen-year-old mother of two, both children with different fathers who are no longer in the picture. She wakes at 5 AM to feed the baby, walks her toddler to day care, sits through six hours of school, picks up a shift at a fast food restaurant, and collapses into bed at midnight. She has not slept more than four hours in three years. She dreams of becoming a nurse. She has never taken the SAT. Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the girl in the back of the classroom is not a statistic. She is a child raising children.
