3 maanden voor zijn dood, op 17 juli 1918, wordt Nicolaas II, de laatste tsaar van Rusland, met zijn gezin naar Jekaterinburg gebracht, de hoofdplaats van de Oeralprovincie. Wat Nicolaas nog niet weet, is dat het zijn eindbestemming wordt. Van zijn tocht, maar ook van zijn leven. Ward en Johan reizen ook met de trein naar Jekaterinburg en onderweg lezen ze in de dagboeken, die Nicolaas bijhield in die woelige dagen.
