Our conversation transcended the ordinary as we delved deep into the intricacies of the music industry. From navigating challenges to crafting effective marketing strategies for legendary artists, our exchange was rich in insights. It was a moment of mentorship and mutual learning, reinforcing the importance of fostering the next generation of music professionals.March: Empowering Women in Sierra LeoneAs March unfolded, I dedicated myself to celebrating Women's History Month with a meaningful initiative. I had the privilege of addressing a group of determined women in Sierra Leone who were passionately pursuing business. Through my organization, Women Who Jam, Global, our conversation centered around the dynamic intersection of entrepreneurship and purpose.In this empowering session, we explored avenues for women to carve their niche in business, fostering not only a spirit of creativity but also resilience in the face of challenges. It was a poignant reminder of the transformative power of education and the boundless potential within every aspiring female entrepreneur.April: Advocating for Artistic Protection with the RAP ActApril was a month dedicated to championing the rights of artists, and I found myself advocating for essential music laws. With a particular focus on the RAP Act, our efforts aimed to bolster artistic protection in the industry. It was a rallying cry for fair treatment, recognizing the invaluable contributions artists make to the cultural landscape.May: A Symphony of Artistic Expression and Global ConnectionIn May, the resonance of creativity echoed through dual initiatives. First, through Women Who Jam, Global, we orchestrated a harmonious celebration of Bob Marley Day. This endeavor went beyond music, sponsoring art materials for gifted visual artists to weave their creativity into a vibrant tapestry. The resulting collection, paying homage to Bob Marley, not only adorned spaces but also provided these artists with a newfound recognition and income.Simultaneously, through A Jam Records, we hosted an artist meet and greet in Sierra Leone, West Africa. This gathering wasn't just about strengthening global music connections; it was an investment in the future of Sierra Leonean artists. By sharing resources and insights, we aimed to fortify their journey in music, fostering a community where talent thrives and resonates on a global stage.May encapsulated the spirit of collaboration, where art, music, and community intertwined, creating not only beautiful compositions but also pathways to empowerment.June: Empowering the Rhythms of Black MusicJune unfolded as a celebration of Black Music Month, a time to amplify voices and offer support to the vibrant Black music community. As a gesture of solidarity, I provided free tips tailored to the unique needs of Black musicians, acknowledging the profound impact they've had on the musical landscape.Additionally, in a spirit of community and mentorship, I hosted a free virtual office hour session. This platform provided artists and professionals with a valuable opportunity for personalized 1:1 advice. It was a collective endeavor to nurture talent, share insights, and strengthen the bonds that make the Black music community a resilient and dynamic force.June, a month dedicated to musical empowerment, became a symphony of shared wisdom and support, echoing the resilience and creativity of Black voices in the world of music.July: A Creative Symphony Unleashed - Collaborating on a Sierra Leonean Rapper's EPJuly marked a crescendo in collaboration as I joined forces with a talented Sierra Leonean rapper for the release of his EP project. This venture went beyond the conventional boundaries of music, becoming a creative symphony where ideas harmonized to produce something truly exceptional.From providing creative direction to contributing to A&R (Artists and Repertoire), the collaboration extended into various facets of the project. It was a testament to the transformative power of collective efforts in the music industry, bringing out the best in both the artist and our shared vision. The release of the EP stood as a milestone, not just for the rapper but for the spirit of collaboration that fuels artistic innovation.August: A Grateful Rebirth - Overcoming Malaria's GraspAugust unfolded as a chapter of profound personal triumph. After facing the daunting grip of Malaria that brought me perilously close to the edge, this month became a symbol of resilience and renewal. With immense gratitude, I embraced the simple yet profound joy of being able to walk again.The journey from illness to recovery underscored the fragility of life and the resilience of the human spirit. It was a period of reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to making each step forward count. In the face of adversity, the restoration of health became a poignant reminder of life's preciousness and the strength that lies within.September: A Resilient Celebration - Marking My 35th Birthday After RecoverySeptember unfolded as a month of personal victory and celebration. Just in time for my 35th birthday, I found myself embracing life with a renewed sense of gratitude and resilience. The recovery from the challenging episode with Malaria became a prelude to a joyous celebration of another year of life, experiences, and growth.This birthday held special significance, serving as a milestone not just in age but in the acknowledgment of the strength gained through overcoming adversity. Surrounded by the warmth of well-wishers, friends, and family, the celebration echoed the triumph of resilience and the unwavering spirit to embrace life's journey with open arms.October: Elevating Connections - A Private Evening with the British High CommissionerOctober brought a unique opportunity to connect and collaborate as I had the privilege of meeting the British High Commissioner. This private celebratory evening, dedicated to honoring higher education, was an enlightening experience that transcended borders.Engaging in meaningful conversations about the importance of education and its transformative power, the evening underscored the value of global connections. It was a moment to bridge cultures and perspectives, recognizing the role of higher education as a catalyst for positive change. The shared commitment to fostering knowledge and understanding left a lasting impression, echoing the importance of international collaboration.November: Balancing Loss and Growth - Nurturing A Jam's Vision Amid ChallengesNovember became a poignant juncture, marked by both professional intensity and personal loss. In the midst of challenging deadlines and a profound commitment to A Jam's growth, I dedicated myself to the meticulous refinement of our values, messaging, and applications. This intensive effort aimed not only to streamline operations but also to make A Jam more appealing and poised for acceleration, particularly in the eyes of potential investors.However, woven into this period of professional dedication was the somber note of losing a dear friend. Despite the weight of grief, the professional demands necessitated pushing through with unwavering determination. It became a delicate dance between mourning a personal loss and steering a professional ship through turbulent waters.December: Cultivating Talent for Future HorizonsAs the year drew to a close, December became a month of strategic planning and talent cultivation. Focused on the growth of A Jam Records, I conducted several interviews to expand our A&R department. This process aimed not only at bolstering our team but also at nurturing a collective vision for the future of our musical endeavors.Simultaneously, the journey continued as I delved into interviews to build and strengthen our tech department. Recognizing the symbiotic relationship between technology and music in today's landscape, the ongoing search for innovative minds highlighted our commitment to staying at the forefront of industry trends.Reflecting on 2023: A Journey of Challenges, Change, and GrowthAs I look back on the chapters of 2023, I see a narrative woven with intense challenges, transformative change, and personal growth. Every event, whether triumphant or trying, has shaped the person I am in this very moment, becoming stepping stones leading me into the uncharted territories of 2024.To everyone who has been part of this journey—those who supported me, taught me, learned from me, and loved me—I extend my heartfelt gratitude.
