An Antarctic Mystery or The Sphinx of the Ice Fields by Jules Verne Loyal Books A wonderful coming together of two writers who wrote their books more than half a century apart. Neither of them had ever visited the remote islands they were writing about yet they provided inspiration for a couple of exciting adventure tales. In 1838, Edgar Allan Poe published The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. It was the only complete novel published by the American author. It was the story of a young boy who stows away on board a whaling ship and it goes on to relate the events that follow. The novel ends a trifle abruptly, with the hero and his friend Dirk Peters deciding to journey to the South Pole.In 1897, the French writer Jules Verne, who was compiling his Voyages Extraodinaires (a series of 54 books that combined science and literature) took up the threads of Arthur Gordon Pym's story and wrote a two volume novel called An Antarctic Mystery (Le Sphinx des Glaces in French).Set eleven years after Poe leaves Pym on his way to Antarctica, the book opens with Invisible Man, The by H. G. Wells (1866 - 1946) LibriVox The Invisible Man (1897) is one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time. Written by H.G. Wells (1866-1946), it tells the story of a scientist who discovers the secret of invisibility and uses it on himself. The story begins as the Invisible Man, with a bandaged face and a heavy coat and gloves, takes a train to lodge in a country inn whilst he tries to discover the antidote and make himself visible again. The book inspired several films and is notable for its vivid descriptions of the invisible man--no mean feat, given that you can't see him! Science and Fiction Scott & Steven Shuken Scott and Steven, two rad twin brothers, diverged in their life paths. Scott became a comic book master and online personality while Steven pursued a life of science. Now they're blowing each other's minds with their knowledge, and recording it just for YOU!Here's the show: Scott tells us about a crazy sci-fi story he's seen recently, and Steven tells us how scientifically possible it is. Then Steven tells us an interesting science fact, and Scott has to write a sci-fi story or superpower based on it. We don't know what each other will bring to the show so our responses are totally improvised!Email: [email protected]/Twitter/Facebook: @SciAndFicProfile image by Dr. Emma Chory!Soundcloud cover image adapted from photo by Niketh Vellanki on Unsplash!
