On the 26th February 1889, 50 year old John Fletcher travelled into Manchester City Centre to attend a mill sale at the Mitre Hotel. He was later seen getting into a hansom cab with a younger gentleman. They did not reach their destination however as when the cabman looked into the back of the cab John Fletcher was unconscious and his friend was nowhere to be seen. This mystery gained national attention and well respected police inspector Jerome Caminada was put onto the case. What really happened to John Fletcher?
