Martin Krpan spremlja delovanje Lutkovnega gledališča Ljubljana že vse od njegovih začetkov, saj je to predstava, s katero so ljubljanski lutkarji odprli svoje prve prostore Mestnega lutkovnega gledališča (danes LGL) leta 1950 na Levstikovem trgu, zato jo včasih imenujemo prva ”prava” predstava Lutkovnega gledališča Ljubljana, čeprav je gledališče delovalo že od leta 1948. V novi zasedbi in novi likovni podobi je bil Martin Krpan tudi prva predstava leta 1984, ko so si ljubljanski lutkarji po dolgih letih le izborili prostor v Mestnem domu, kjer gledališče domuje še danes. Prva predstava novonastalega gledališča je bila sicer Udarna brigada, ki so jo kot otvoritveno predstavo Ljubljanskega festivala uprizorili oktobra 1948. Tokrat se je to temeljno delo slovenske literature na oder vrnilo v sodobni interpretaciji mladega režiserja Tina Grabnarja, ki ga obiskovalci Lutkovnega gledališča Ljubljana že poznajo po nagrajeni predstavi Nekje drugje. Martin Krpan, ki s svojo kobilo skrivoma tihotapi sol, bleščeče cesarsko življenje na dunajskem dvoru, nonšalantno sekanje prečudovite dvorne lipe in divji dvoboji ponujajo čudovito izhodišče za lutkovno ustvarjanje. Uporabljena je tradicionalna tehnika ročnih lutk. Zgodba se odvija na klasičnem prizorišču za ročne lutke imenovanem kastelet.
