Alone vs Feeling Lonely

Do you know the difference between feeling alone versus feeling lonely?  I woke up this morning with the dilemma of distinguishing one from the other.  Once I understood that my loneliness was dependent on someone or something on the outside of myself, my perspective on both changed.
