A Odense, una cittadina della Danimarca, vive un bambino con i genitori molto poveri. Il padre ama la musica e la letteratura e cerca di offrire al piccolo continui stimoli. La strega del paese fa una profezia alla madre: "Un giorno Odense si illuminerà a festa per ricevere tuo figlio". Le cose però non sembrano andare così. Nella solitudine e nel dolore, il ragazzo inizia a scrivere e dalla sua penna escono tantissime storie. Tra queste c’è anche quella di un cucciolo di anatra diverso da tutti gli altri che viene emarginato, lasciato solo, non capito. Quel brutto anatroccolo è proprio lui e anche quella sembra una storia destinata a finire male. Il brutto anatroccolo però si trasforma poi nel più meraviglioso dei cigni e il suo autore diventa famoso e riceve molte onorificenze, proprio come aveva predetto la vecchia strega a sua madre. Quel bambino è Hans Christian Andersen.
